Why would I want to perform extra cleaning when simply leaving shoes at the door makes such a difference in the cleanliness of my floor?

So that’s my take on removing shoes. I have a bookshelf right inside my door where my kids and I kick off our shoes first thing. I never insist on guests removing their shoes, but I would say that nine out of ten do so automatically when they see our bare feet and the shoe shelf.

Here’s my question for you: Do you remove your shoes inside, or do you prefer shoes on indoors? -- http://www.care2.com/
#52802
Here are five reasons for removing shoes before entering:

1. Comfort. I wear sensible shoes (mostly? sometimes?) but no matter how comfortable my shoes are, my feet are always happier outside of them. I want to be comfortable at home. I want to take off my shoes as soon as I walk in, the same way I might want to take off a pair of tight jeans. My home is my haven, it’s hard to relax in your sanctuary wearing knee-high boots.

2. Toxins. An EPA study, reported in Environmental Science & Technology provided the first proof that pesticides can be tracked into residences on shoes. People and pets who walk on pesticide-treated lawns can pick up pesticides like the herbicide 2,4-D, for up to a week after application, the study showed. The study found that “track-in” exposures of pesticides may exceed those from the best-known sourceâ€"pesticide residues on non-organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Another study showed that 98 percent of lead dust found in homes is tracked in from outside as well.

3. Happy Neighbors. If you live in an apartment building, no shoes makes much happier downstairs neighbors. Especially downstairs neighbors with a really cute little girl who is a light sleeper. (Hi Zoe!)

4. Germs. This one may have more to do with neurosis than actual factsâ€"but living in an urban environment and seeing all the disgusting things that end up on the sidewalk? Yuck. I definitely don’t want to track pesticides and lead paint in, but neither am I interested in tracking in dog waste and other bodily fluids thank you very much.

5. Dirt. I live in a converted 19th century convent that still has boot scrapers by both entrances. (Did 19th-century nuns wear boots?) We have paved roads now so dirt and mud may be less of an issue, but toxins and germs aside, shoes still manage to track in plenty of plain old grime.

Do you remove your shoes before entering your home? Some people forbid shoes in their homes, while others consider being asked to remove their shoes nothing short of offensive. I have friends with Please Remove Shoes Before Entering signs brazenly taped to their doors, while I have other friends who’d prefer to stay out of someone’s no-shoes-allowed home rather than be required to expose their socks.

Much of it has to do with cultural tradition. In many places across the globe removing shoes before entering is a deeply ingrained practice. As a kid growing up in southern California, I always entered the house in socks. Although not because we had a rule about shoes, rather, my preferred style of footwear had wheels attached and roller skates were tricky on the carpet. But somehow I evolved, over time, into an adult who doesn’t wear shoes inside. For me it started off as a matter of comfort, but upon further reflection it has become reinforced by a number of other factors.

At the 2010 World Sport Stacking Championship held in Denver, Colorado in April 2010, he successfully defended his world champion title and has been a three-peat champion from 2008-2010. He is the only stacker to reset the cycle world record eight times (7.23 - 6.65 - 6.52 - 6.50 - 6.33 - 6.21 - 6.18 - 5.93) until the current world record which is set by him and tied by his fellow Team USA friend, Mason Langenderfer, which is a fast 5.93 seconds in the premier Cycle event. Then Steven teamed up with three Team USA teammates Luke Myers, Lawrence Maceren, and John Harden in the Timed 3-6-3 Relay turning in a blistering record of 12.41 seconds. History / The world's most prolific cannibal
July 18, 2011, 07:35:04 PM

As you turn off the Kings Road in to Vaileka in northern Viti Levu you come across a neatly-kept grave on your right, 12 kilometres before the town.

The neatly-inscribed grave stone and serene surroundings belie the terror when the Fijian chief buried there held sway over the area more than 200 years ago.

Ratu Udre Udre, a tribal chieftain in the area, was the last-known cannibal in Fiji and was known to practice this gruesome feat even after influential chiefs like Ratu Seru Cakobau ceded Fiji to Great Britain and accepted Christianity.

He is reputed to be the world's most prolific cannibal.

According to Udre Udre's son, the chief would eat every part of his victims, preserving what he couldn't eat in one sitting for consumption later.

While it is believed that Udre Udre ate over 9000 people, this would have been impossible considering the time it would have taken per person. Actual estimates from the count of grave stones near his grave the count near 872.
The National Museum in Suva has on display part of Udre Udre’s dining table, with several of the actual ceremonial forks used by Fijians to eat human flesh.

The excellent Lonely Planet guide to Fiji gives the following story:

In 1849, some time after Ratu Udreudre's death, the Reverend Richard Lyth, who was staying in Cokova in north-eastern Viti Levu, saw a long line of stones placed together in a row.

Each stone represented one of the chief's victims and amounted to a personal tally of at least 872 corpses, in addition to any eaten in his youth [apparently some of the stones had been removed].

The Reverend recounted a conversation with Udre Udre's son Ravatu.

“Ravatu assured me that his father ate all this number of human beings - he was wont to add a stone to the row for each one he received - they were victims killed in war. He ate them all himself - he gave to none,” he said.

“However much he had on hand - it was cooked and recooked (by which it was preserved) until it was all consumed - he would keep it in a box so that he might lose none ... he eat but little else, very little vegetable - and being an enormous eater he was able to get through a great deal.”

So next time you’re travelling that way take a little time to be acquainted with Fiji’s last cannibal. -- http://wwwfijiancustomculture.blogspot.com/2009/10/fijis-cannibal-history.html

Doctor Decapitated In Elevator Accident
Investigation Under Way Following Doctor's Death
POSTED: 9:53 a.m. CDT August 18, 2003
UPDATED: 5:58 p.m. CDT August 18, 2003

HOUSTON -- Officials of a downtown hospital are investigating the death of a surgical resident who was decapitated in an elevator mishap.

Christus St. Joseph Hospital may release additional information about Hitoshi Nikaidoh's death after a closed briefing Monday, said hospital spokeswoman India Chumney Hancock.

Nikaidoh, 35, of Dallas, was stepping into a second-floor elevator about 9:30 a.m. Saturday when the doors suddenly closed, pinning his shoulders. His head was severed when the elevator car moved upward. A female hospital employee witnessed the accident and spent about 20 minutes trapped inside the malfunctioning elevator until firefighters were able to rescue her.
The traumatized employee who witnessed the death was taken to the hospital's emergency room for treatment of shock, but was released later that day, said Hancock.

Photographs and measurements at the elevator by Houston police crime scene specialists were passed to Harris County medical examiners who continued conducting their inquiry into the accident. The entire elevator bank where Nikaidoh was killed was pulled from operation, but St. Joseph Hospital officials said the decision won't affect patient services.

The University of Texas Health Science Center's Dr. Margaret McNeese taught Nikaidoh for four years throughout medical school.

"He was a remarkable individual. He was one of the few students in all of my years here that I never saw him complain, without a smile on his face and any activity, regardless of how small or insignificant it might have seemed, he gladly took it on and did it to its full extent," McNeese said.

Nikaidoh graduated in 2003 from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. --http://www.click2houston.com/news/2412223/detail.html

Dr. Hitoshi Nikaidoh (pictured above, left), a surgical doctor, was decapitated as he stepped on to an elevator at Christus St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas on August 16, 2003. According to a witness inside the elevator, the elevator doors closed as Nikaidoh entered, trapping his head inside the elevator with the remainder of his body still outside. His body was later found at the bottom of the elevator shaft while the upper portion of his head, severed just above the lower jaw, was found in the elevator. A subsequent investigation revealed that improper electrical wiring installed by a maintenance company several days earlier had effectively bypassed all of the safeguards. -- http://listverse.com/

1.Depression: Ennui has set in, followed by many romance-free months, joyless outings, and a decline in one or both partners’ personal hygiene and fashion choices.

2. Histrionics exhaustion: Your girl was super-cute and charming at first, but now her yo-yo dieting, social circle freak-outs and nightly bubble bath habit makes envisioning a conjoined future with her now utterly impossible.

3. Instability jitters: Your guy’s up-and-down freelancing career was to be expected right out of college, but after a few years, you’re longing for a steady paycheck, a regular work schedule and the condo life together.

4. Routine boredom: Is this love a pretty package tied up with a big, beige bow? Don’t mistake contentment with settling for less than you deserve.

5. Gapping (in age, income, lifestyle): Being a sugar daddy or sugar mama can be fun for awhile, but any twenty-something’s penchant for all-night clubbing followed by French fry binges can eventually clash with your morning meetings (and cholesterol count).

6. Ambition inequality: She wants a multi-carat ring and career acclaim; he’s cool with living with a roommate… or maybe moving to Santa Monica, but only if he could sell his 1978 set of Topps baseball cards on Craigslist for the right price.

7. Roving eye syndrome: After a flurry of flirty text messages and secret lunches, one of you has enjoyed a first kiss with a new paramour and an affair seems inevitable. Moral issues aside, sometimes it takes getting hot for someone else to realize how chilly your current relationship’s become.

Breaking up when nothing’s wrong
By Phineas Mollod and Jason Tesauro

Every romance hits a few dry spells, but if you can’t remember the last time you laughed together or got frisky in a new way, it might be time to reconsider your relationship. Did your weekend getaway fail to inject some energy? Did that last birthday gift fizzle upon reception? Sometimes there’s nothing tangibly “wrong,” but a kite with no wind to keep it aloft isn’t going anywhere but the ground, if you get my drift. Without a concrete, acceptable reason to break up with someone (infidelity, drama, PETA-supporting vegan vs. rodeo-loving carnivore), many couples simply continue to tread water in their dead-end relationships. Other times, one partner’s passive aggressive behavior â€" such as becoming increasingly distant, or engaging in acts of sabotage â€" pushes the other into initiating the split. When you sense that your love’s flatlining on the table, it’s time to either bust out the defibrillator or agree to call it a day.

Mamalit og tuko sikupon
Sunday, July 17, 2011

(Orlando B. Dinoy)

MANILA, Philippines (AP) â€" The Philippines warned Friday against using geckos to treat AIDS and impotence, saying the folkloric practice in parts of Asia may put patients at risk.

Environmental officials have also expressed alarm about the growing trade in the wall-climbing lizards in the Philippines. An 11-ounce (300-gram) gecko reportedly sells for at least 50,000 pesos ($1,160).

Geckos are reportedly exported to Malaysia, China and South Korea, where they are used as aphrodisiacs and as traditional medicine for asthma, AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis and impotence.

Their use as medical treatments has no scientific basis and could be dangerous because patients might not seek proper treatment for their diseases, a health department statement said.

"This is likely to aggravate their overall health and put them at greater risk," it added.

Treatments for asthma are easily available and affordable, while there are antiviral drugs to control the progress of HIV, it added.

Geckos are carnivorous, nocturnal reptiles from the family Gekkonidae that are found in tropical countries. They are known for their sticky footpads that allow them to climb vertical surfaces, including glass.

Wildlife official Mundita Lim said her office has asked law enforcers to look into the possibility that scammers may have infiltrated the trade because of the exorbitant prices being quoted online by buyers demanding geckos weighing at least 400 grams (14 ounces).

She said geckos in the wild grow up to 200 grams (7 ounces). Those fattened in captivity can grow only up to 300 grams (10 ounces).

In folkloric practice, geckos are dried and pulverized to use as medicine, and there are anecdotal accounts of the saliva or internal organs being collected, according to Lim.

Environment Secretary Ramon Paje earlier warned that collecting and trading geckos without permit can be punishable by up to four years in jail and a fine of up to 300,000 pesos ($6,900).

He said a healthy population of geckos is needed to regulate pests and maintain the fragile ecosystem. Geckos feed on insects and worms. Larger species hunt small birds and rodents. -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Swimmers float in the sapphire waters of the Ik-Kil cenote, near the Maya site of Chichén Itzá in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Cenote means “natural well” in Spanish. Sinkholes occurring at sea level will fill up as high as the water table, creating the famous clear blue pools, used by the Maya royalty for both relaxation and ritual sacrifices.

Beginning of the Great Revival is a two-hour tale of the rise of China's Communist Party â€" released on the occasion of its 90th anniversary â€" and its heroic leader, Mao Zedong, who is played by a young Chinese heartthrob. The movie features a cast of hundreds of major Chinese actors, including Chow Yun Fat, with impressive sets and design, all at record cost. It has been released in 6,000 theaters across the country. But it doesn't seem to be winning hearts and minds. Despite many mass ticket giveaways, cinema houses are reported to be empty. A barrage of negative reviews on the Internet have been censored. On VeryCD, a pirated-film website, more than 90% of users described the film as "trash."  -- Fareed Zakaria

Beginning of the Great Revival, known as The Founding of a Party in China and a companion piece to 2009's blockbuster The Founding of a Republic, details the historic events surrounding what is referred to as the Chinese Revolution, the period from 1911 to 1921, when Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing Dynasty and planted the roots of what has become today's Chinese Communist government. The story shows the beginnings of the country's most influential first-generation leaders, including Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek and Zhou Enlai. Just as The Founding of a Republic did, the film, co-directed by Jianxin Huang and Sanping Han, features a cast of China's biggest box office names such as Liu Ye, Chang Chen, Chen Kun, Andy Lau, Daniel Wu and John Woo. -- (C) Official Site -- http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_beginning_of_a_great_revival/

BEIJING (AP) â€" China called on the U.S. to withdraw an invitation for the Dalai Lama to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House, saying Saturday that it could hurt relations between the two countries.

China denounced the meeting and called on the U.S. to withdraw its invitation to avoid interfering in China's internal affairs, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.

"We firmly oppose any foreign official to meet with the Dalai Lama in any form," Hong said.

China's warning comes after months of warming ties between the world's No. 1 economy and dominant military power and the rising Asian giant, buoyed by President Hu Jintao's successful visit to Washington in January.

Obama's planned meeting with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader on Saturday could sour relations between the two sides ahead of expected visits over the coming months.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to visit the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on July 25. Vice President Joseph Biden is also scheduled to visit China this summer, followed by a trip to Washington by his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

Experts say a meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, paired with the recent intervention by the U.S. in Vietnam's ongoing dispute with China in the South China Sea, could cool improving ties.

"The Dalai Lama and Tibet have long been issues that have caused tension between China and the U.S., and this meeting will without a doubt negatively impact bilateral relations," said Niu Jun, a professor of international relations at Peking University.

"U.S. presidents have met with the Dalai Lama in the past, but this has always been unacceptable for China. The two sides will have to communicate and struggle to work through it," he said.

Obama last met with the Dalai Lama in February 2010, infuriating Beijing, which views the Nobel Peace Prize laureate as a separatist intent on ending Chinese rule over the Himalayan region.

The Dalai Lama has repeatedly denied the accusations and says he seeks only a high level of autonomy for Tibet.

"We request the U.S. side to honor its serious commitment that recognizes Tibet as part of China and opposes Tibet independence," Hong said in the statement.

Tibet has been a source of controversy for decades, since Beijing sent troops to occupy the country following the 1949 Communist revolution. It insists the region has been part of Chinese territory for centuries, a claim disputed by many Tibetans.

A failed uprising in 1959 led the Dalai Lama to flee into exile in India. -- http://news.yahoo.com/
