Starfish or sea stars are echinoderms belonging to the class Asteroidea. The names "starfish" and "sea star" essentially refer to members of the class Asteroidea. However, common usage frequently finds "starfish" and "sea star" also applied to ophiuroids which are correctly referred to as "brittle stars" or "basket stars".

There are about 1,800 living species of starfish that occur in all the world's oceans, including the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian as well as in the Arctic and the Southern Ocean (i.e., Antarctic) regions. Starfish occur across a broad depth range from the intertidal to abyssal depths.

Starfish are among the most familiar of marine animals and possess a number of widely known traits, such as regeneration and feeding on mussels.

Some of the better known sea stars include:

    Bat star
    Blue sea star
    Carpet sea star
    Comb sea star
    Common starfish
    Crown-of-thorns sea star
    Eleven-armed sea star
    Japanese sea star
    Ochre sea star
    Pincushion sea star
    Pink sea star
    Horned sea star

MABINI, Alburquerque and San Isidro Police stations put up impressive records in crime busting by posting perfect crime solution efficiencies in June, data from Camp Dagohoy reveals.

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, July 26 (PIA) â€"MABINI, Alburquerque and San Isidro Police stations put up impressive records in crime busting by posting perfect crime solution efficiencies in June, data from Camp Dagohoy reveals.

On the other hand, Anda and Maribojoc Police stations scored 0% crime solution efficiency (CSE) for the month as Anda tracked two crimes solving none and Maribojoc with a single case that remained open.

This too as police blotters all over the island listed 1,314 cases and only 620 of them considered solved, generating only 47% CSE.

At a presentation during the latest Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) meeting held in Balilihan, Bohol, Camp Dagohoy, through Police Provincial Director Constantino Barot publicly released data which showed Mabini police station tallying 12 crimes, all of the considered solved according to a police reckoning system.

Meanwhile, Alburquerque police recorded some seven crimes while San Isidro town had two. These two town police stations also reported that these crimes were all acted upon, investigated and either cases were filed or a filing recommendation was issued.

Following them on the top ten list of best performing local police units based on crime solution efficiency (CSE) are Garcia Hernandez posting a 90% CSE (9 of 10 cases solved), Valencia at 89% (solving 24 0f 27 cases), Guindulman at 88% (solving 15 of 17 cases), Balilihan at 83 (15 0f 18 solved), Bilar at 82% (9 of 11 cases), Loboc at 81% (13 of 16 cases) and Bohol Tourist Police at 75% (3 0f 4 cases)

On the other hand, stations with low performance also include President Carlos P. Garcia at 8% (1 in 12 cases), San Miguel at 15% (5 of 23 cases), Jagna at 16% (4 of 25 cases), Corella 17% or (4 of 12 cases),  Baclayon 20% (2 of 10 cases) and Sevilla at 22% (2 of 9 cases).

Meanwhile, admitting that they are still stuggling to curb theft, which tops Bohol crimes at 43%, local police authorities urge the public to deny criminals any criminal opportunity.

PSSupt. Constantino Barot sounded the call for community vigilance against crimes and keeping away from opportunities when criminals can commit crimes.

Aside from theft, alarming crimes recorded on Bohol are robberies, physical injuries and carnapping.

Theft, Barot explained happens when owners fail to secure their properties while robbery is committed when the criminals exert force to get advantage of things.

Do not leave your things unguarded, Barot urged, as he admitted “your police could not attend to everybody.”

The grave lack of warm-bodies which is common in all police stations across the country has also dented on the crime busting efficiency of local police, Barot explained.

While the Philippine National Police envisions a police officer for every 500 residents in a community, Bohol police stations operate on a 1:1200. (Rey Anthony Chiu) -- http://piabohol.blogspot.com/

Prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, currently facing charges including bigamy and sexual assault. Inherited leadership of the polygamist sect from his father, Rulon Jeffs, after the old man's death in 2002. What happened next was revealed in an anonymous letter:

Remember Uncle Rulon died on Sunday, dissolving the First Presidency. Warren was still only an elder. The following day, at Monday morning meeting, Uncle Warren, besides giving us details on the passing of Uncle Rulon, made this statement. "I won't say much, but I will say this, Hands off my father's wives." Speaking to the newly bereaved widows, he said, "You women will live as if father is still alive and in the next room." I remember thinking to myself, "Who in the world, at a time like this, would be lusting after Uncle Rulon's wives?" The thought sickened me.

This was said on Monday. By that Friday, Warren moved in on those women so fast, and with such finesse, that only two of his "mothers" had enough fortitude to stand up against him. Those stunned women, who had sincerely believed that their husband and prophet would live 350 years and give them children, went through the shock of losing their husband to death, seeing him buried, Warren proclaiming himself prophet quickly thereafter and then immediately receiving revelation to marry those women "found worthy of him" in secret ceremonies.

Before committing that kind of sin before the eyes of God, one of his mothers, seeing the futility of fighting him off, bravely fled the compound and left the community at a run. Another of Warren's young "mothers" flatly refused to go along with the marriage. She was sent back to live with her father and told she would live the rest of her life out without ever being married.

"I, the Lord God of heaven, ask the courts to cease the prosecution of my holy ways," Jeffs said. "There will be a judgment against all those who prosecute the church. ... I shall let all people know of your unjust ways. I will bring sickness and death. Let this cease."

Walther then told him that "if you call for the jury's destruction" while the jury -- who will decide if Jeffs is guilty on two counts of sexual assault on a child -- is present, "you will be removed from the courtroom."

The defendant responded by saying, "I am not threatening. I am releasing a message."

Jeffs then spent about an hour objecting to Broadway's testimony on the grounds that it violated religious freedom, claiming the FBI agents "touched upon what we find sacred to salvation."

"This must stop, in a land ... where we maintain the constitutional right of religious freedom," he said. "We are not a fly-by-night religious organization that just appeared within your borders. Mockery must cease. This is sacred to us, and must remain sacred."

But prosecutors responded that Jeffs' First Amendment arguments were not valid in this case. Over frequent interruptions by Jeffs -- including more than six in a row -- they argued that freedom of religion does not extend to polygamy or infringing on a child's rights. The judge later advised Jeffs to seek counsel from his former attorney.

Ruby Gutierrez of the Texas Department of Families and Protective Services, who was one of those who took custody of the children after the raid, testified that the 12-year-old girl whom Jeffs alleged sexually assaulted resembled Pippi Longstocking with her red hair and freckles. Jeffs objected to the girl's picture being shown in court, and argued that her name should not be released.

A Texas Ranger who was part of the raid, Don Williams, described to jurors how he went into the compound's temple. Jeffs interrupted him on numerous occasions, calling his testimony "an intrusion, a desecration of sacredness."

"I'm requesting true justice and protection of religion," the defendant said.

Jeffs had voiced similar views Thursday, when he argued that he felt no counsel could adequately represent him in order for "true justice to be served."

After warning him of the challenges of representing himself, Walther granted Jeffs' request to effectively fire his attorneys. But the judge declined to push back the opening arguments, which were scheduled for later that afternoon.

Prosecutor Eric Nichols told jurors that they would hear an audiotape documenting the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl. He also promised to present DNA evidence proving that Jeffs fathered a baby girl with a 14-year-old girl.

But when the time came for Jeffs -- who had been verbose earlier in the day -- to talk, he instead sat quiet. He remained that way, with his head down, for about a minute as jurors looked back and forth between him and the judge.

Walther said she understood that, by Jeffs' silence, he had chosen not to give a statement. Then she gave prosecutors the go-ahead to start calling witnesses.

The judge previously had told jurors that she expected the trial could last two to three weeks. But that was before Jeffs won the right to represent himself.

On Friday, prosecutors said that they had worked late into the night readjusting their approach and vowed to rest their case by next Tuesday.

Jeffs' breakaway sect is believed to have about 10,000 followers. Their practice of polygamy, which the mainstream Mormon Church renounced more than a century ago, is part of their doctrine.

The sect's leader, Jeffs, was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list when he was arrested five years ago during a routine 2006 traffic stop in Las Vegas.

He was convicted in Utah of two counts of being an accomplice to rape, for using his religious influence over his followers to coerce a 14-year-old girl into marrying her 19-year-old cousin. Afterward, he was sentenced to two consecutive prison terms of five years to life.

But in July 2010, the Utah Supreme Court overturned his convictions, ruling that the jury instructions were erroneous. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff told HLN this week that he would be open to putting Jeffs on trial again in his state.

Meanwhile, the Texas legal proceedings were set off after about 400 children were taken from the sect's Yearning for Zion ranch in 2008. Child protection officials said they found a "pervasive pattern" of sexual abuse on the ranch through forced marriages between underage girls and older men.

But the Texas Supreme Court ruled the state had no right to remove the children. The court also said the state lacked evidence to show that the children faced imminent danger of abuse. Most of the children were returned to their families, although some men at the ranch were charged with sexual abuse.

Sect leader warns of 'death' to 'those who prosecute the church'
By the CNN Wire Staff
July 30, 2011 -- Updated 0013 GMT (0813 HKT)

Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs declined to give an opening statement Thursday after firing his attorneys in his sexual assault trial.

San Angelo, Texas (CNN) -- A Texas judge warned Warren Jeffs against calling "for the jury's destruction" shortly after the polygamous sect leader said Friday during his sexual assault trial that those who prosecuted his church would face "sickness and death."

The comments that precipitated the warning to Jeffs, who has been granted the right to represent himself, occurred around midday after Judge Barbara Walther had sent the jury out of the San Angelo courtroom.

The exchange was one of several contentious ones Friday, when the one-man defense team ended his self-imposed silence by repeatedly interrupting prosecutors and launching into a diatribe on religious freedom.

Jeffs' trial stems from a 2008 raid on a ranch near Eldorado, Texas, run by his church, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This trial addresses the two sexual assault counts, while Jeffs is expected to be tried later on a related bigamy charge.

Several people took the stand Friday, including a doctor who conducted DNA tests on one of Jeffs' alleged sexual assault victims and her baby; a Texas child protective services agent who took part in the raid; and an FBI agent who took various items from the ranch.

Representing himself, Jeffs interrupted when FBI agent Jeff Broadway began to describe what he found on a computer seized in the raid. Broadway said the computer contained lists of people living at the ranch, including their names, ages and birthdays.

MANILA, Philippines (3nd UPDATE) - Abu Sayyaf terrorists beheaded 2 of the 7 government soldiers killed in the July 28 clash in Sulu, the military said on Friday.

Two of the soldiers suffered "severe hacking wounds," according to Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Omar Tonsay.

An initial report said bodies of 5 of the dead soldiers were mutilated by members of the terrorist group.

"Hindi 5, 2. I can confirm 2. I can confirm 2 hacking (victims) and I cannot give the full name right now kung sino sa kanila kasi hindi ko pa din alam," he said.

Tonsay described the act as "barbarism."

A military source said the head of one of the victims could not be found.

Bodies of mutilated Marines recovered in Sulu
By Roel Pareño (The Philippine Star) Updated July 30, 2011 12:00

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines â€" Five of seven Marines killed in the fierce gunbattle between government troops and the Abu Sayyaf in the jungle of Sulu last Thursday were beheaded and mutilated, security sources confirmed yesterday.

A military report, citing intelligence, said 26 soldiers were also wounded and at least 13 militants may have also been killed in the initial clash and follow-up fighting but troops did not recover any bodies.

The five, including a second lieutenant who was initially reported missing but whose decapitated body was subsequently recovered, also lost several night fighting equipment and high-powered firearms to the bandits.

The fighting took place between the slopes of Mount Tunggol and Mount Gasam in Barangay Panglayahan, Patikul Thursday at dawn after Marines maneuvered in stormy weather close to the encampment of the militants in an effort to capture Abu Sayyaf leaders Radullan Sahiron, Isnilon Hapilon and allied militants belonging to the Southeast Asian militant network Jemaah Islamiyah.

Regional military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang declined to confirm or deny the reported mutilation of the soldiers, whose remains were already airlifted Thursday night and brought to a private funeral home here.

“As much as possible we want to show the bravery of this soldiers, how they sacrificed their lives to preserve the safety of the civilians from the terrorists,” he said.

“They were able to penetrate the camp but the militants were positioned on higher ground, that’s why we had casualties,” Cabangbang said.

Despite the large number of military casualties, the militants withdrew into the woods after five hours of fighting and government forces captured their hideout.

Esteban Binghay, Episcopal Vicar sa Archdiocese of Cebu.

(EIM) (BANAT NEWS)

Is this an ancient astronaut?   Cited by Erich Von Daniken in his book, Chariots of the Gods, the sarcophagus of Pacal, Lord of Palenque, was discovered in a tomb deep within the pyramid called the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque.   Although some believe the image on the lid depicts an early astronaut at the controls of his spaceship, archaeologists propose that it shows Lord Pacal at the moment of his death (683 AD).  He is falling into the jaws of the great underworld Monster, while the Vision Serpent writhes below the Celestial Bird, who sits atop the World Tree.  These symbols demonstrate the Maya belief that the spirit of the king would eventually return from his underworld journey to assist his successor in ceremonial visions. -- http://www.horizonarts.com/

From Southern Mexico, Pacal the Great ruled over the Mayan city of Palenque, during the seventh century. He was buried inside a pyramid called the Temple of Inscriptions. The intricately carved lid of his sarcophagus has become a classic work of Mayan art and also proof and evidence for ancient alien theorists. In their view, Pacal is pictured in a spaceship during takeoff, with his hand on a control panel, his foot on a pedal and an oxygen tube in his mouth. -- http://listverse.com/

This was carried out with considerable expertise and an obviously steady hand so that his skin, including that of the head, face, nose, ears, neck, torso, genital organs and legs, was removed so as to form one pelt. So expertly was it done that, after the post mortem examination, the skin was able to be re-sewn onto Mr Price’s body in a way which indicated a clear and appropriate, albeit grizzly, methodology...

Albert Spaggiari was a French career criminal who is best known for masterminding the Societe Generale bank robbery in France, 1976. As a young man he committed his first robbery in order to impress his girlfriend, but was soon captured and imprisoned. After his release and having served in the French military, Spaggiari became the owner of a photographic studio and was making a reasonable living as a law-abiding citizen. However, he apparently became bored with his middle-class life and sought to return to a life of crime.

He began to plan a break-in at the Societe Generale Bank, in Nice. He decided that, since the bank vault was located in the basement, the break-in would best be achieved by digging underneath from a nearby sewer system. He opened a box for himself and placed a loud alarm clock inside, setting it to go off at midnight in order to check for the existence any acoustic or seismic detectors that might foil his plan. In fact, the bank vault had no interior alarm or security systems, as it was considered utterly impenetrable.

Spaggiari then recruited a group of professional gangsters from Marseille to help him dig the tunnel. He instructed them to never drink coffee or alcohol, and always to get at least 10 hours sleep every day to avoid danger to the mission. After two months of digging, the tunnel was finished, and, during a Bastille Day festival when the bank was closed for a long weekend, the gang broke into the vault, itself. They opened up over 400 safety deposit boxes, stealing over 60million francs worth of money, securities and other valuables.

When the robbery was discovered, the following message was found on the vault wall: “sans armes, ni maine, ni violence” which is translated as: “without weapons, nor hatred, nor violence”. At first police were baffled, however, in the following months they arrested one suspect on a tip from a former girlfriend. The man later admitted being a part of the robbery and ratted out the entire gang, including Spaggiari. During his trial, however, Spaggiari managed to escape by distracting the judge, by handing him a fake piece of encoded evidence. He jumped out of the window, where a motorcycle was waiting for him and made his getaway.

He was never caught and the loot from the heist was never found. He died at the age of 52 of throat cancer, and his body was found dumped outside his mother’s house, presumably by unknown friends. -- http://listverse.com/

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla (Reuters) - Authorities on Wednesday captured a man in Colorado who escaped nearly 32 years ago from the Florida prison where he was serving a life sentence for murder.

Frederick Barrett, 60, slipped away from the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford during a nighttime power outage on August 17, 1979.

U.S. Marshals Service officers, dressed as U.S. Forest Service firefighters, arrested Barrett early on Wednesday at his cabin in Montrose County, Colorado. He had been living in the remote, mountainous area under the name Neil Meltzer, Florida officials said.

A tattoo of a cross and dot on his right hand helped officers confirm they had the right man, said Steve Davenport, a special agent supervisor for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Davenport said investigators had been looking for Barrett in earnest since 2009, when a new fugitive initiative in Florida set its sights on finding a dozen long-term prison escapees with violent histories.

"It's really, really difficult to track somebody who's been out 30 years," Davenport told Reuters. "The trail was cold."

But using public records and databases, investigators found evidence Barrett had traveled to Hawaii, California, Tennessee and Maryland since his escape and eventually appeared to settle in Colorado.

In addition to escape charges in Florida, Barrett now faces drug and gun charges in Colorado after marshals found a marijuana grow house and multiple firearms in his home, officials said.

Barrett was convicted of killing a traveling companion on the Florida Turnpike in February 1971.

According to officials, he choked Carl Ardolino from behind as Ardolino was driving. Barrett and another man then stopped the car, carried Ardolino to a shallow ditch filled with water and held his head underneath until he died.

Margaret Archer, Ardolino's niece, said her 26-year-old uncle had picked the men up at a rest stop as he drove from New Jersey to Florida for a vacation.

The deceased man's family members welcomed the news of Barrett's capture after so many years.

"Unbelievable," Archer said. "We were thrilled to say the least." (Editing by Jerry Norton) -- http://news.yahoo.com/

Editor's Note: The following piece comes from Global Post, which provides excellent coverage of world news - important, moving and odd.

Celebrities with a penchant for weird baby names (looking at you, David and Victoria Beckham) should avoid having kids in New Zealand.

The country’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages has been cracking down on parents who get too creative when naming their kids, Australia’s Herald Sun reports.

The list of weird names for kids that are banned by New Zealand’s names registrar has grown to include Lucifer, Duke, Messiah and 89.

Also not approved: Bishop, Baron, General, Judge, King, Knight and Mr., names that were all said to be too similar to titles.

The letters, C, D, I and T were also rejected as first names, the Herald Sun says.

As well, the agency has refused to allow names involving asterisks, commas, periods and other punctuation marks.

And three different sets of Kiwi parents wanted to name their children Lucifer, only to have the name choice nixed.

In 2008, New Zealand’s names registrar drew international attention when it approved such non-traditional names as Benson and Hedges for a set of twins, as well as the boys names of Violence and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

But New Zealand isn’t the only country to ban wacky names for kids, the Toronto Globe and Mail reports.

In Sweden, name choices are subject to a naming law. While Lego and Google have been approved as names for children, Superman, Metallica and Elvis, and the name Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116, pronounced Albin, were not approved.

In 2007, a judge in the Dominican Republic submitted a proposal to ban names that are either confusing or gave no indication of gender, such as the names Qeurida Pina (Dear Pineapple) and Tonton Ruiz (Dummy Ruiz), according to the Globe and Mail. -- http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/

Editorial Reviews

Nonfiction account of Henry Miller's travels through the United States, published in 1945. Miller undertook these travels in 1940 and 1941 after returning from a lengthy stay in Europe. Miller comments, mostly negatively, on America's physical landscape as well as on the mood and spirit of the American people. Among other things, he contrasts the ideals of the original founders with contemporary Americans' love of making money. Miller commented further on these themes in the sequel Remember to Remember (1947). -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

"Henry Miller is the nearest thing to Céline America has produced.... He aims not at the ears, brains, or consciences, but at the viscera and solar plexus."â€"The New Leader.

In 1939, after ten years as an expatriate, Henry Miller returned to the United States with a keen desire to see what his native land was really likeâ€"to get to the roots of the American nature and experience. He set out on a journey that was to last three years, visiting many sections of the country and making friends of all descriptions. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare is the result of that odyssey. -- http://www.amazon.com/

The Air-Conditioned Nightmare
Artist(Band):Mr. Bungle

Inside of me today
There is no one
Only asteroids and empty space
A waste

...They're looking through the windows at me...

Get me out of this air-conditioned nightmare
Rots your brain just like a catchy tune, yeah
You will hate life more than life hates you

Happiness is your illness in an air-conditioned nightmare

...Burn all your mementos of me...

Walkin' on air
Up from the wheelchair
I'll find the suicide
That I deserve

Walkin' on sand
Forgotten where I am
But it's so comfortable
Here in the sun...

I only see rainbows
Now that the bandages are gone
Through my window, there

From the skyscrapers
Down to the submarines

Birds and fairies
Sanctuaries
Atop the rolling hills of hell

These words are sledgehammers
Of truth
That pound the iron heart
Of sin

Bloody smiling
Vandalizing
My wet dream is drying up...

Where's my rainbow?
Where's my halo?

There's my halo!
