How To Tips / Think in pictures to memorize
December 28, 2011, 11:28:16 AM
People with photographic memories think in pictures. When trying to remember the number two, for example, they may think of a light switch that has two settings, or they may think of a pack of cigarettes that holds twenty cigarettes to remember the number twenty. Remembering things by thinking in pictures is a great memorization technique that works with many things, especially phone numbers and addresses. -- http://www.egodevelopment.com/

You will know if you are marrying the right person if you and your partner are honest with each other; you both maintain open communication with each other; your potential spouse is supportive; your better half shares common priorities, goals, values, and thoughts on critical issues with you; and you agree with each other on issues regarding sex, intimacy, and affection. -- http://www.egodevelopment.com/

(/EIM) (BANAT)

Healthy two-headed baby born in Brazil
By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow â€" 3 hrs ago

A Brazilian woman has given birth to a two-headed baby boy and doctors say the newborn appears to be in good health. Maria de Nazare has decided to name the pair, who share a heart, lungs, liver and pelvis, Emanoel and Jesus.

"When doctors scanned her they realized that the baby had two heads and that a normal birth would be a great risk both for mother and baby," hospital director Claudionor Assis de Vasconcelos told Brazil's O Povo newspaper. "The caesarean took an hour because the baby was sitting down."

"Despite all the problems we have as a small interior hospital we managed to save both mother and baby, which was our aim," he said. "And for us it was a great surprise to find out that the child was in really good health."

De Nazare was expecting twins and only found out about the two-headed child minutes before doctors advised her to have a caesarean birth in order to save both her life and that of her baby. Along with two heads, the 9.9 pound newborns have separate spines.

In some two-headed births where one brain is less developed, one head is removed in order to save the child's life. But rarer cases like this one, where there are two functioning brains, complicates the decision making process for doctors.

"If both their brains are functioning, how are we going to choose which head to remove?" said Neila Dahas, director of the Santa Casa hospital. "We are not considering the possibility of surgery. What we've got to think about at this moment is to maintain the children in good condition and see how they will develop."

Conjoined twins sharing a body, but with separate heads, are extremely rare but not without precedent. This is the second such birth in Brazil this year. However, the other child died after a few hours because of a lack of oxygen to one of the child's heads.

Reading Václav Havel from His Jail Cell
Posted by Daniel Flynn Bio on Dec 20th, 2011
http://frontpagemag.com/

The curtain came down on the amazing life of the playwright-president this weekend. Václav Havel, the Czech dissident who helped oust the political leaders who imprisoned him, died at 75 in his country home in Bohemia on Sunday.

Havel was the last president of Czechoslovakia and the first president of the Czech Republic. What he didn’t do in both offices far outweighs anything that he did do.

Born into privilege in 1936, Václav Havel lived under persecution for the better part of his years. The Communists expropriated his family’s property in the ’40s, blocked his education in the ’50s, banned his writings in the ’60s, and imprisoned him in the ’70s and ’80s. If ever a man had cause for retribution, Havel did. Yet, when he took power he treated his oppressors the way he wished to be treatedâ€"“in a cultured, legal, and civilized manner”â€"and not in the thuggish manner that they had treated him. “We are not like them,” Havel once told fellow democrats gathered in Prague’s Wenceslas Square. He proved it.

He proved it again upon the breaking up of the multi-ethnic Czechoslovakian state. With the bloody backdrop of the Balkans, Havel wished to preserve national unity and avoid disaster. He succeeded in the latter but not in the former. The idea of war, the first impulse of other national leaders placed in this difficult spot, was not even on the table for Havel. He neither wished to attack his countrymen for seceding nor to preside over his country’s break up. So he resigned his position, becoming Czechoslovakia’s final president. Rather than descend into a second Yugoslavia, Czechs and Slovaks parted as friends. Europe has the peacemaker Havel to thank for this.

History / Vaclav Havel: A leader par excellence
December 20, 2011, 02:08:02 PM
Czechoslovakia, December 20, 2011 | UPDATED 10:44 IST

With the death of former President of the erstwhile Czechoslovakia Vaclav Havel, Europe has lost a prominent political figure, steadfast in his commitment to peace and his opposition to authoritarian rule.

The dissident playwright - who had to face intense harassment at the hands of Czechoslovakia's draconian Communist regime - exemplified the power of ideas in bringing about political change. His Charter 77 criticised the government for human rights violations and prepared the ground for the 1989 Velvet Revolution that kicked the Communists out of Czechoslovakia.

The most significant aspect about Havel was that he moved above the polemical 'Right vs Left' politics of Europe. This was most evident in his address to the American Congress in 1990, in which he urged the United States to help bring democracy to the USSR rather than weaken it.

The fact that his presidency saw the conservatives accuse him of being a cryptosocialist, while the Left attacked him for being pro- privatisation, shows that he kept the interests of peace and his country first. -- http://indiatoday.intoday.in/

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and proceeds to fire it at the other patrons.

'Why?' asks the confused, surviving waiter amidst the carnage, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

'Well, I'm a panda,' he says, at the door. 'Look it up.'

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation. 'Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves.'

“At first, we were puzzled why Aquino will only visit the flood-affected areas post-Christmas. But with Concepcion’s revelation, we can guess that Noynoy’s calendar is jampacked with Christmas parties and he does not want to miss a single one” said Vencer Crisostomo, national chairman of Anakbayan.

Hmm, naa diay palabra de honor, kay nakasaad nga motambong sa parties, motambong jud, come hell or high water, as in flash floods in Northern Mindanao...

At the same time, Lacierda said the Palace will be addressing reports that illegal logging caused the massive flash flood that devastated Northern Mindanao and has instructed Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) officer-in-charge Mujiv Hataman to immediately investigate the matter.

“These concerns on illegal logging will be addressed by the OIC of the ARMM,” said Lacierda said at a press briefing.

Justifying Aquino’s presence during the PSG Christmas Party, Lacierda said the president did not want to deprive the PSG “this singular family activity.”

“The PSG by nature of its job is on alert 365 days of the year. Christmas Day is not an exception. Separation from their loved ones is part and parcel of the job and holidays are not exceptions. The Christmas celebration is meant most especially for the younger members of their families who refer to this one day where the importance of the family is emphasized. It would be most unfair to deprive them of this singular familial activity,” Lacierda said.

“Just to let you know, the President stayed only for a few minutes and, according to Col. Chito Dizon whom I spoke (with) this morning, it has already been paid for so… And the President also mentioned to Colonel Dizon that he wouldn’t be staying long in deference to the Mindanao flood and he did not sing. He just sat and watched for a few minutes the party, and then he left immediately,” he added.

According to Lacierda, Aquino just dropped by the PSG Christmas Party and immediately informed Dizon “that he was just dropping by to say hello to the family members.”

“This is one opportunity where the members of the troops of the PSG, the family members could get to see the President and this is in appreciation of the service that the PSG is providing the President on a daily basis, “ said Lacierda.

The president’s “antics” with Concepcion, however, is “just the icing on the cake” for youth activists outraged with Noynoy’s policies that contributed to the tragedy.

The Kabataan party list also yesterday denounced Aquino, saying that “President Aquino, being the head of the state, should have made it his priority to be hands-on in alleviating the situation in Mindanao instead of attending a Christmas party in Malacañang. It smacks of utter insensitivity on the part of the President to merrymake while hundreds have been killed and thousands struggle to survive in the wake of typhoon Sendong,” said Athena Gardon, deputy secretary general of Kabataan Party-list.

Gardon added the President Aquino should also be made answerable for vetoing the disaster preparation in the P5 billion calamity fund for 2011 which she said weakened government capacity to prevent natural disasters from causing enormous devastation.

Malacañang justified Aquino’s decision to have a party in the Palace instead of coordinating rescue efforts during the onslaught of Typhoon Sendong in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro City that killed hundreds, said to hit 900 as of yesterday, by claiming that the president only stayed for a few minutes during the Christmas Ball of the Presidential Security Group and was fully aware of the tragedy that was unfolding at that time in Northern Mindanao.

The Palace, as well as the weather bureau was unprepared for the disaster, and Aquino showed up only three days after northern Mindanao was ravaged by Sendong.

Aquino has been getting a lot of flack for his partying in the face of death and disaster from the social media, as well as other groups.

National youth group Anakbayan on Monday expressed its “utter disgust” at what it called “insensitivity” by the president toward the victims of the Northern Mindanao floods, as well as the administration’s “direct hand” in the lethal deluge.

In several posts by actress Valerie Concepcion in the mini-blogging site Twitter, she accidentally revealed that Aquino was partying with members of his Presidential Security Group (PSG) on the same day the flood death toll hit 652.

PALACE DENIES P-NOY PARTIED W/ STARLETS AS NATION MOURNS HUNDREDS

MANILA, DECEMBER 21, 2011 (TRIBUNE) By Virgilio Bugaoisan - Noy slammed for partying amid Sendong’s destruction.

Emperor Nero fiddled while Rome burned, but that is not what Malacañang’s denial is all about.

The presidential spokesmen are denying that President Aquino partied with starlets while the country was mourning hundreds who were killed by Typhoon Sendong.

They claimed that Aquino merely showed up for a few minutes, with one spokesman saying Aquino stayed for just 30 minutes, while another spokesman claimed that the president stayed some two hours at the party for the Presidential Security Group.

A few days earlier, Aquino was also partying even as US’ National Aeronautics and Space Administratiopn (NASA) was already predicting the Ondoy-like rains hitting northern Mindanao.

Philippines death toll passes 900
Published: 11:55AM Tuesday December 20, 2011 Source: ONE News

The head of the government disaster monitoring council in the Philippines has announced that the death toll from a severe storm that hit the southern Philippines has risen to 927 as bodies have begun to surface in the sea.

However, the toll is expected to rise even further as more floating bodies are recovered today, said Benito Ramos, head of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

Ramos added that the council had lost count of all those still missing after tropical storm Washi brought heavy rains, flash floods and overflowing rivers to the southern island of Mindanao.

"They (the dead bodies) were washed out to sea. They were underwater for the first three days but now, in their state of decomposition, they are bloated and floating to the surface," Ramos said to reporters.

"The death toll will rise again when more bodies surface." -- http://tvnz.co.nz/

AP â€" 26 mins ago

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) â€" A 10-month-old girl who was surgically separated from her conjoined twin died Sunday after suffering general organ failure, said the director of a Chilean children's hospital.

Doctors at Luis Calvo Mackenna Hospital had separated Maria Jose Paredes Navarrete from her twin sister Maria Paz late Tuesday at the thorax, abdomen and pelvis in a marathon, 20-hour surgery. Maria Jose ran into cardiac problems that required her to be revived three times afterward, and Maria Paz remains clinging to life, said hospital director Osvaldo Artaza.

A hospital statement said Maria Jose had suffered "a flaw in the right side of the heart as a consequence of pulmonary hypertension that afflicted her since her birth."

The statement said Maria Paz was in a stable condition, with her kidneys starting to function.

Chileans have closely followed news about the twin girls, with updates about their condition making online and newspaper headlines.

Artaza said the surgery affected all of the deceased girl's organs, while "recognizing the delicate state of Maria Paz, we are hopeful."

"We are conscious that we made every effort," Artaza said. "It's a moment of deep pain, of deep grieving."

The twins were born in the town of Loncoche, about 470 miles (760 kilometers) south of the capital of Santiago, and had spent their entire lives under hospital care.

They underwent seven surgeries before Tuesday's procedure, in which 25 surgeons and anesthesiologists participated.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, about 35 percent of conjoined twins survive only one day, while the overall survival rate runs between 5 and 25 percent.
