ing-ana man nang contest...naay bati naay nindot. ang nindot ang modaog. this year, naay nindot naa pod bati. this goes to most contests like this.

in fairness sa mga contestants, nindot ra baya pod sila. Funny lang kay gusokay ang contest sa mga laki.

but the essence of this personality contest is development- in personality and behavior, in outlook and beliefs in life, and many aspects of human relationships.

it's the process that hopefully makes them better persons; molds them into becoming better citizens with the UB's virtues of CHARACTER, SCHOLARSHIP, and SERVICE; and helps them get through a competitive world out there!

and it's not just the contestants themselves that benefit from these. the organizers as well- who are students, too- gained rigorous training.

they may all get through rough times, they may fail in many instances, the may have fall short from our expectations but everything is a process that help them in many ways. Ways we may never come to expect!

:D

C2H4: Wow! thanks! I took that pix way before I had my hair curled!

waaaaaaaa! sa akong kaarte, nagpakulot ko mga duha ka buwan na nia-gi. ang akong gusto "natural-looking big waves." to my "HORROR" mura kog santo niño! ako untang awayon ang nag-kulot nako pero it will not do any good. unja gigutom na pod ko adto. so akong gi-ingnan ang parlor nga "manang, wa ko nalipay sa imong gibuhat." so, iyang gi straight. waaaaaaah! mura na pod kog tukog na silhig! nabuang ko. so ingon na pod ko, "manang, wa ko niangay!" so iya napong gi curl. in the end, my hair was buhaghag nga hilaw na kulot. i had to ponytail my hair for about a month.

i had it relaxed yesterday.

i learned my lesson. dili na nako hilabtan akong buhok!

Bohol is a rich province in terms of natural (and human) resources. What we lack are the means (and ideas?) to use them for something good. Dili pobre ang Bol-anon. Daghan tag-katigayunan. Wala lang nato nagamit og tarong.

example lang. kining tuba-tuba. abi natog tambal lang sa panuhot apan dako diay ni siyag demand sa gawas as ingredients for bio-diesel. karon, dako ang demand sa atong probinsya niini. ang tuba-tuba maoy atong paningkamotan na matanom sa mga tao. dili man ni siya hago padak-on.

on the other side of the coin... kini ang pungot huna-hunaon.

our people have lands. bisan gamay, matamnan man unta pod. atong mga tao, gahi man pod og mga ulo. kinahanglan dukdokon pa pod. if they can just plant camote in their backyard, plant kamunggay, or any sa ilang nataran, mabuhi na man sila. atong mga tao pod kay wala man poy buhaton samtang naghuwat sa ilang humay. og makakwarta na pod gamay, ipalit pod og bahalina. our people need behavior change.)

and we also need to take pride of what we have. didto sa china, specialty gyud nila ang paw. sa atoa, kung mag-serve og paw moingon noon og "pasensya na kay paw ra gyud ang among mabayang." mauwaw kung kamunggay o camote ra ang gikaon. dili man angay ika-uwaw ang grasya.

sige uy. ari sa ako.

During my training with the Philippine NGO Council about Reproductive Health, Gender, and Population, we were asked to choose among four destinations to visit. Two destinations were houses for people living with HIV/AIDS, one was La Mesa Reforestation Project, and the other was a resettlement area for scatters in Metro Manila. I chose the latter though I was tempted to go to the refuge houses. I was afraid that I could not deal with people living with HIV/AIDS properly- that I may show pity or I may be too helpful (or what) that may not be good for them or me.

Last week during the forum about HIV/AIDS, a girl just spontaneously spoke about "us having HIV working with you in this advocacy!" I thought people didn't notice or they just pretended to be cool about it. I, admittedly, was roused thinking how I should approach her. Soon, she spoke about living with the virus, how she got it and why she is working with the advocacy. She spoke about why we should not fear them and why we should not pity them.

I was grateful for that girl for coming out that way. I learned a lot!

the concept of communism and "rebellion" are two different things. it just happens they go together. the groups we have here in Bohol might have real reasons why they sway into the other side. poverty that is. if these groups "listen" to them, the poor are easily swayed to their side. thus, we have to listen to them as well, they might need something. on the other hand, there are those who are just "enjoined" by the group without really grabbing the real reasons like our children and youth.

poverty is not just the lack of land ownership, it also goes with the lack of potable water, lack of basic needs such as shelter, food, and clothing, lack of education, among many other things.

it is easy for us to enumerate what we lack and what we hoped for. however, it is difficult to address. anyhow, our government is pinpointing poverty as reasons for insurgency. and that's what the bohol poverty reduction management office (bprmo), for one, is trying to solve. the two-pronged approach of bprmo strikes both poverty and insurgency with the former as reason for the latter. solving the former may solve the latter and vice versa.

there are many reasons for poverty and all our efforts is geared towards solving such. population for one is one big reason for poverty. Problems of population begets problems with health, education, environment resources, pollution, and many others. Managing our population is one way of giving light to the problem of poverty. the commission on population, the united nations population fund along with the provincial health office, city and municipal health offices are advocating on Population-Health-Environment (PHE) among our people. these are intertwined issues that looks at poverty as a glaring fact among our people.

the groups on the other side need to know that someone cares about their situation. they need to know that the government cares, that the people in the NGOs care, that ordinary people care.

however, our approach is not merely giving fish to the hungry but giving them fish along with fishnets and the 'manual' on fishing. community empowerment is the key term for community development.

poverty has many faces. each one of us is looking at it on different sides. thus, this is a journey we are all hoping to successfully trudge along. if you can do something, we enjoin you to be one of us in this journey! afterall, this is our home. this is our bohol.  :)

To Jun and everybody:

Here's a poem by Nikki Giovanni, an African American Poet. Many many years ago, this used to be my favorite poem because it really pierced my heart. (saddist!!! ha ha! ) It spoke loudly what I felt inside. It's a sad poem but it speaks of  realities- the limited choices we have in this journey we call life.  :(

CHOICES

If i can't do
what i want to do
then my job is to not
do what i don't want
to do

It's not the same thing
but it's the best i can
do

If i can't have
what i want . . . then
my job is to want
what i've got
and be satisfied
that at least there
is something more to want

Since i can't go
where i need
to go . . . then i must . . . go
where the signs point
through always understanding
parallel movement
isn't lateral

When i can't express
what i really feel
i practice feeling
what i can express
and none of it is equal

I know
but that's why mankind
alone among the animals
learns to cry

:(  :(  :(

Sometimes, Mr Junayag, we also have to examine if we want something for the right reasons.

When I was in college, uso kaayo tong Levis 501, I was obsessed with getting a pair. It seemed that everyone had one, ako ra ang wala. I wanted it so bad pero dili man ko ka afford kay wala man ko'y kuarta.

Then pag abot na nako dire, nag shopping mi sa akong cuzin sa Gilroy, CA, where the outlet stores are ridiculously cheap, esp. with their season sale prices. When we went to the Levi's store, I saw that they had their 501's at 75% off! I didn't buy one. To this day, wala pa gyud katilaw ning akong sampot ug Levi's.  ;D

I realized that I wanted those jeans before because I knew I couldn't afford it. When we can't have something, we want it more. Do we want something because we really, truly want it? Or do we merely want it because we know we can't?  ;D

When we can't have something, we want it more... ?

C2H4: sakit mana uy.... sakit gyud! i know how it feels. especially when that something is a somebody!!! hu hu hu hu!
#480
el mundo, basin gipili pod nila tong ilang respondents. hehehehe!

para nako it's a matter of how we look up to our ates and kuyas. most often than not... ang ate ug kuya gyud ang gitan-aw nga sakto ug kamao. i know someone nga "si manang" gyud ang bright, gwapa, buotan sa iyang panan-aw. for short, "idol ko si manang!"

this is a matter of upbringing in the family and culture among people as well that somehow "dictated" the stereotype about first borns.

yah, uwag, biga... lust, sensuality, passion...

The BACH Council Committee on Literary Arts with members from Kaliwat ni Karyapa held a part 2 of BBB (Balut, Beer, ug Balak) last Feb 14 here at the Plaza Rizal. One gets a beer and a balut if one volunteers to read or render a balak.

Our theme for that evening was "Gabii sa Gugma ug Biga." We can talk about biga, right? Talk about the lack of it or the issues regarding the word whether negative or positive in the mileau of gender sensitivity, reproductive health rights or just plain uwag. We even tapped the United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) to help us during the event. Although, wa kaabot ang funds kay 11th hour na man, diha man gihapoy moral support!

However, during the BACH Council meeting prior to the event, members from the academe, the DEP-ED and other "conservative" sectors (most came from the Heritage Section of the Council) disliked the idea. Members from the Arts Section liked it, though. There was an open debate about the use of the word biga. The original word was even, "uwag." Yesterday, we liked the word kundat! hehehe!

Good point, Fiel. PGMA is working hand in hand with PHO and CHO for the P-H-E Campaign. Global Warming is one of the issues here. You can contact Dr. Casano of CHO also. She's very active. She's the program director of the city's P-H-E campaign.

Gervistill, i'm so touched. (/me wipes tears!)

I have a love-hate relationship with UB. Can't explain it here. I am just so happy some of you look back to your UB days with pride.

TO ALL UBIANS... keep up the trinity of virtue... scholarship, character, and service!
