indeed, there seems to be more witnesses to the incident who say it was the police that shot at people indiscriminately who were near the scene of the shooting. mao gani nga nasaypan ang father and child simply because they were riding a vehicle with the same color as the suspects. wa gyud tan-awa sa mga bullok nga pulis kon kinsay nagsakay. pataka lang pamusil... actually this is not the first time that the police killed innocent civilians who were aboard vehicles the same color as the suspects that they are tailing. the sad part is, in the end mahilum lang ang storya as if nothing happened unjustly to innocent people. angay pamutlan ug tudlo nang mga pullis kay trigger happy ra kaau labina kon nagbayhon lang ang gipamusil, walay armas.

calle: as a top 10 lister of the most corrupt countries in the world, it would not be surprising at all that the ombudsman would ran out of manpower to run after all grafters. from another perspective, it could be that government functionaries who are the known top grafters deliberately kept the office of the ombudsman with minimum resources to minimize its reach in trying to catching them.

well admittedly, there is very little choice for boholanos to choose from basing on the list of people who might run for governor. i wish there was someone who was fresh, has a vision and is a champion of the ordinary boholano.

you're correct in your observation about the volatility of palm oil in the world market, macky. anytime the demand for this product can change dramatically in so short a time. what bohol must do is, since the palm oil industry is already beginning to roll, is to limit planting of oil palm in marginal areas and ensure that agricultural land particularly rice land is not converted to this cash. there is always need for rice and its production should be the main focus of agricultural initiatives in bohol. there is a growing demand for organic rice and bohol can certainly go into this. they can convert dagami and other by-products of rice into organic fertilizer and use it as input in rice lands, instead of burning them. this will bring down the cost of farming inputs and allow farmers to earn more. at the same time, people are provided with healthy rice :-)
layman, good suggestion for bunot to be used as toilet paper. we in bohol have lots of this material. those husks that don't end up being used as toilet paper can be used to manufacture coco coir and soil matting materials that are now being used for soil erosion control. we can use these materials ourselves or we can export them. the possibilities are limitless.

i'm just wondering if the american government would be willing to account for ALL the expenditures it incurred on account of the war in iraq and make this information known to the public. then maybe we can really conclude if indeed american involvement did not really cause in any way the economic crunch in the U.S.

i don't think color has to do with plastic being recyclable or not. basically, it is dependent on the material being used in the manufacture of the plastic, not the color. if it is made from any petro-based material, then it is not recyclable but may be usable. usability of a plastic product depends on the user, not on the item. a plastic bag that was provided with 2 kilos of rice you bought can be reused as many times, if you want to.

a reef ranger training is indicative of an initiative to protect a certain part of the sea which is where the livelihood of the majority who inhabit our coastal areas is derived from. while this initiative talks about providing livelihood activities for the people, it is unclear what these livelihood projects are. there have been a lot of coastal management initiatives that have been done in the past but marine degradation continues to this day. in my observation, there are only two major things to do in marine conservation: (1) strict implementation of marine laws; (2) provision of ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF LIVELIHOOD, preferably those that steer people clear from the sea.

there are a lot of thinking filipinos who believe that the kidnapping of many well-to-do chinese business families were perpetrated to raise election campaign chests that started during the time when erap was named anti-crime chief under which ping lacson served as task force head honcho. it would be then very easy to follow that he would take up where the paoctf ended to continue raising money for the same purpose.

anti-rabies vaccine is effective only when administered while the virus is in transit between the site of wound and the brain. once the virus reaches the brain and there was no vaccine introduced in the body, onset of symptoms is certain to follow and there will be no more turning back.

Baclayon - Bohol / Re: Happy Fiesta
December 11, 2008, 03:24:28 AM
anti-rabies vaccine only works if administered a few days after a potential exposure to an animal suspected to be carrying rabies. exposure can be through a bite or licking by animal on human's exposed skin. this is because rabies resides in the saliva of a rabid animal. technically, you don't get rabies if you get wounded by a rabid dog's scratch using his paws. rabies, once introduced in the body travels very slowly (approximately 3 mm a day) from the site of wound to the brain. this is the reason why the time element involved in the appearance of symptoms varies. sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes a month or so. if the site of wound is in the extremities, it takes a longer time for the symptoms to appear compared to when the site of wound is in the neck because it is much closer to the brain. it is when the rabies virus reach the brain when the symptoms appear. and when the symtoms begin to appear, then that is the end of you.

i wonder why PLDT is still interested in spending millions of pesos to operate a land-based telephone system in for the whole province of bohol. the cell phone is more accessible and more practical. unless PLDT envisions that every home in the future will require internet connection. but have they not given it a thought that by then, satellite phones may have become the norm and thus would render their land-based system useless? well, i guess that's the risk that they have to take.

china's attitude of imposing high tariff for imported banana chips is not anything that is surprising or new. most likely they also have a banana industry and the high tariff rate is designed to protect the interests of their own farmers and entrepreneurs over other people. corollarily, i am certain that filipinos would do the same thing. it is not uncommon for, say, chicken farmers in the philippines to protest the entry of imported chicken in the market especially if import tariff rates are low because they can put a good selling price which would compete with locally-raised chicken. let's face it: everyone is primarily concerned with himself and this is the reason why protectionist behavior is always present anywhere. even boholanos practice protectionism. st. jude bus company protested over the operation of ceres liner in bohol because their business gets affected. marlito uy and fred one strongly protests the establishment of big-name malls in tagbilaran because it affects their business. so, that is how protectionism works.

layman, if you recall ping lacson's involvement in the kuratong-baleleng case, you will find a lot things that are hidden but can be read between the lines. also, one needs to remember that what triggered the arrest of the gang -- and their subsequent deaths, was the purpose of retrieving $ 2 million dollars which was hijacked from an armored van days before the arrest. this fact somehow got lost along the way and there's reason to believe that this was deliberately done in order to obliterate the real reason why the incident happened in the first place... anyone who is involved in something like this especially someone who wants to be president ought to have his background and his motives probed.

glacier: building military hardware is no longer as lucrative as it used to be. it can only become economically viable if a lot of other countries would buy them. the truth of the matter is that many countries are now into producing their own and that makes U.S. market for american-made military hardware very limited. this is even happening in the commercial aircraft sector. in the past, this industry was dominated by the americans such as mcdonnell-douglas, boeing, but now they are getting very stiff competition from that european consortium that makes airbus. so now, american aircraft companies are just struggling to survive.
#426
mdb, i have a strong conviction that the american military involvement in iraq is one of the reasons, if not the chief reason, for the economic crisis that has befallen the U.S. even if no one in america is openly saying so. i gave it some thought and took my cue from an old teaching given by sun tzu.

sun tzu is an ancient chinese warrior and philisopher who wrote the book "the art of war" more than 2,000 years ago. in his book, he says that a country who goes to war that lasts long is going to ruin its economy. in effect, sun tzu is saying thta if you go to war, you must do so quickly and decisively. if it gets protracted like how the war in iraq is turning out, then it the economy is bound to certain ruination. sun tzu also said that any country that goes to war in a faraway land and brings with them a lot of equipment as well as their food and other supplies will incur a huge expense in carrying out the war. unless, they live off the land that they will conquer.

in the case of the U.S. it has brought everything -- supplies and equipment -- from stealth fighters and apache helicopters to toothbrushes and toilet paper halfway across the globe for its troops to use. surely, transport cost alone would cost so much let alone expending and using all these supplies and equipment in a war that has been going on for the last five years.

given the above-mentioned facts, there's little wonder then why america's coffers would run dry.

(the funny thing is that every one in america is pointing elsewhere as to why they are experiencing economic woes at this time. these americans are an interestingly amusing breed, don't you think?

that's the point i'm driving at slackware. the cost of military hardware and the number of these that have been lost. i have not been keeping count but since the beginning of the war, a few stealth fighters and AH-64 apache helicopters have been lost, not to mention ground equipment like tanks and trucks that have been blown up. the cost... the americans don't really want to make a donation in the form of warfare equipment, slackware. the so-called donations made by america before were actually costed for the rental the U.S. had to pay for the use of subic and clark before their contract expired in the early 90s. that is the reason why since then, we no longer hear of the U.S. donating hand-me-down helicopters and trainer aircraft to the philippines. you see, america has been sneaky with filipinos for the longest time. during the early years of WW II, president roosevelt appealed to the filipinos to fight for them and help defend america with the promise of equal military benefits with their american counterparts. around quarter of a million filipinos heeded that call. in 1946, just a year after the end of the war, the U.S. congress singled out the filipinos - from among 60 other nationalities that fought in the war under the american flag - to be excluded from those who will receive equal military benefits with americans through the Recission Act of 1946. after spilling filipino blood for the americans including members of the U.S. congress who signed the recession act who were probably growing a fat belly during the war years, the americans repaid the filipinos by taking away their full military benefits. in plain and simple terms, gilalo ta sa mga americano. shortly after, the U.S. coaxed the filipinos into entering into an agreement with them that would allow their troops to be stationed in the philippines and promised to pay a rental fee. again the filipinos were short-changed in 2 counts: (1) the "rental fee" was very small. around the end of their contract, the americans were paying around $ 800 million for the full and continued all-year-round use of subic and clark. in comparison, the american were paying $ 7 billion dollars to israel in exchange for landing rights ONLY. no fill-time military base. just landing rights; (2) the americans don't pay the rental in cash, not even in check. they pay in kind. the sad part is that when they pay in kind they short-change us yet again on 2 counts: [1] they pay us hand-me-down (read ukay ukay) equipment like circa vietnam war huey helicopters, old trainer jets, etc.; [2] when americans pay their ukay ukay payment, the call it aid and make it appear as if they were donating something to us, not paying rent. so, again, gilalo lang gihapon ta sa mga americano. but going back to slackware's suggestion that some of american military hardware be donated to the philippines, well, the things facts cited above are the reasons why the americans will no longer make "donations" now like they used to (when the U.S. bases were still around).

that's right. the issue of the burlesk king (now house speaker) made it to the national dailies. there was even a suit filed against a media person in the aftermath of the scandal. and just to give an update, the media person was acquitted recently by the court of the crime of libel... you may be right in your observation that davaoenos might be more tolerant about family values and circumstances of their leaders compared to boholanos. i guess this may explain the propensity of boholanos to elect traditional politicians to public office.
#436
that's right, the police is very good at getting around to technicalities. llike for example the shooting incident that's being mentioned here. there are witnesses who are willing to testify before any probe body that they saw SAF personnel shoot at the red crosswind the father and daughter were riding in, the police hierarchy is saying that they will base their conclusion according to the results of the ballistic test that will be performed on the firearms of the cops that were used in that incident. well, i'd say this is elementary stuff for police to get around: all they need to do is submit police firearms that WERE NOT used in that particular incident, and becomes certain that the ballistic test will yield negative results. then using this document, the police will tell the public that it was not police personnel who killed the innocent civilians, and thus get themselves off the hook.

figure of speech lang to, calle. i do acknowledge that there are some things that they have done for animals. it's just that i find this group to be reactive in their initiatives. they have no proactive program as far as i know. i mean, everywhere in th philippines, you will find stray dogs that patrol the streets like they are the police. we all know very well that stray dogs are potential carriers of rabies and rabies is still present in a lot of places in this country. PETA should be doing something about this problem. they can work with DOH to institute programs that keep dogs from roamaing the streets and keep human population against the deadly effects of rabies. let us remember that there is no treatment for rabies. once you have it, then it's going to be the end of the road for you. that is how important keeping our streets free of stray dogs is. PETA should be doing this kind of meaningful work.

i find it hard to believe that the US FDA would make a blooper of announcing wrong information about something as common as coconut oil. there is reason to believe therefore that it was done to sabotage its value in the market. the truth of the matter is that coconut does not contain cholesterol. however, it contains saturated fat which is, in fact, higher than the saturated fat you find in animal fat. but compared with palm oil, the fat content of both oils (coconut and palm) are about the same. but in terms of practical use, layo ra kaayo ang oil palm sa lubi. for one thing, in case of famine, you can always drink the coconut water (butong) and eat the coconut meat. you can't do that with oil palm berries or whatever you call those things that they harvest and process into oil.

what's good about nuts is that it has zero cholesterol, very little saturated fat and more unsaturated fat. unsaturated fat (either monounsaturated fat or polyunsaturated fat) is high density lipoprotein (HDL) which is considered good cholestrol. the best source of unsaturated fat among nuts is walnuts and almonds. macadamia nuts tops the list but the down side is that it also has a higher saturated fat content. peanuts, cashew and pistachios are also very good sources of unsaturated fat. in the philippines, the most common among the nuts is peanuts. so, peanuts, anyone?

in my analysis, one of the reasons for the economic meltdown in the U.S. maybe its involvement in the war in iraq. just imagine the amount of military hardware that they have deployed to that country and the number of troops and food that they have to transport on a regular basis halfway across the globe, it must have cost them a large fortune and perhaps even their economy. if a single f-18 costs 38.5 million dollars, think about the total number of aircraft and other military hardware and equipment that have been lost since the start of the war and you cannot imagine the staggering cost involved.

actually, the bright boys at city hall should have decided to locate this kind of facility elsewhere in the outskirts of the established business district of tagbilaran in order to decongest this area which has always been plagued by heavy traffic. but i guess, it is already moot and academic at this time because the structure is already there. i hope that this building can serve as a monument to the short sightedness and lack of common sense of so-called technical experts at the city planning office and the local officials who approved this project. in fairness to dan lim (who could not even solve a simple problem such as the drainage issue), this tagbilaran city square which was originally constructed to replace the agora public market that burned to the ground was conceptualized and implemented during the administration of joe torralba. so right now, murag wa na tay mahimo nga nahuman ra siya... on the flipside, it is with some level of relief that the edifice is finally completed after almost 2 decades kaysa malata lang nga dili magamit.

there was a rather comprehensive coverage of the incident in the sunday issue, (dec. 7) of the PDI... that's right, it was a planned robbery operation gone bad. police got a tip about their plan and went to the scene to verify. when the robbers saw the police, they panicked and started shooting and what's when the running gunbattle started. initially the police counted 10 dead from the suspectedd robbers side and 5 civilians nga nadamay lang. the police said the robbers fired indiscriminately at anybody that came their way (perhaps to pre-empt that they might have been responsible for the civilian casualty). there are reports of witnesses who are willing to testify that it was a group of special action forces (SAF) who shot dead the father and his 7 year old daughter who was riding a red crosswind. apparently police thought they were the robbers who were reported to be riding in a red toyota revo... police should have checked who was inside the crosswind. both passengers were riding in the front seat and were fairly visible. (if bystanders could see the father and daughter as they watched from a distance as they sought cover from the line of gunfire, how much more for police who were posted right around the vehicle)? nag dinanghag na pud ang police.

majority of filipinos don't really have that much political conviction that would drive them to the streets to pressure officials to institute reforms. what drove metro manilans to edsa is basically the usisero attitude that is inherent in the filipino. people went to edsa because everyone was there and it was like a fiesta. there was a lot of food being passed around and people enjoyed watching the events transpire in a drama in real life involving two opposing military forces.

noli de castro has not really done anything substantial for this country as a public official. as a filipino who has basic duties to fulfill for his country, de castro fared better as a broadcast journalist because he at least exposed irregularities in government to his audience and thus can claim a certain level of having accomplished something whose outcome was for other people rather than for himself and his ego. of course as vice president, his job is to sit and wait until the president becomes incapacitated to discharge of her duties and i certainly don't begrudge him for that. it's just that he tries to create the impression that he's helping out people especially OFWs but he can't even do that effectively thus giving an opportunity to manny villar to get into this mission of helping OFWs in distress by bringing them home. now election time is getting closer and as vice president, he seems to have the notion that as such, he should be the next president. this became apparent when he announced that he will not run again as vice president. my concern now is if noli de castro becomes presidential candidate. he is an expert at public relations (read propaganda) and making pa pogi as a media practitioner and you know how easy it is for anyone to get elected to an elective position who has this kind of talent. his election as senator and vice president is probably indicative of this. noli de castro, who is known to any functioning manilan (read well-informed professional) as noli de cashtro, has never done anything concrete to help people out. we certainly don't need him to lead this nation out of the quagmire that it has gotten itself into now. we need the likes of rudy duterte and/or edward hagedorn to lead this nation towards something better in the years ahead because they have what it takes to impose discipline and pursue economic development that is pro filipino (read masa) as opposed to pro elite. of course, i am aware that this "dream team" is only wishful thinking.

glacier, tinuod nang imong nadunggan bahin sa negative effects sa oil palm towards the environment. it is, in fact, for those very reasons that some people including a USAID-funded environment project that i used to work with in bohol as well as officials of the bohol environment management office (BEMO) expressed their opposition to the promotion of oil palm production in bohol. this particular position of opposing to the proposed project was made in a session of the sangguniang panlalawigan in bohol in 2001 in which FBC chair richard uy and FCB president argeo melisimo also attended to convince provincial lawmakers that their proposed project had merit. i left bohol shortly after that but obviously our opposition was drowned out by the majority because the next time i heard, huge tracts of land in talibon and ubay area were being established as nurseries. if what calle is telling now is true - and i don't doubt what he saw - it means that the industry is alive and well in bohol. but it will be bad for the environment though.

"all major boholano politicians are always pro-admin, whoever is seating in malacañang. that includes majority of the mayors, congressmen, governors and board members"

if this statement is true, then it is a sick reality. in the philippines where politicians are concerned primarily with personal ambitions and nothing to speak of in terms of party ideology to begin with since political parties come and go like clothes fashion, it is plain stupidity to be pro admin simply for the heck of it, regardless of whoever -- or perhaps whatever -- is holding the reins of power.
#473
mao gyud... and besides, the commercial and industrial uses of coconut oil and palm oil are basically the same. so there is absolutely no need for the philippines to start getting into oil palm production because its coconut industry is already well established. what is needed here is to enhance the coconut industry some more to maximize production of coconut-based products as well as maximize agricultural output of coconut plantations by intercropping with other high-yield products.
#474
in my observation there is no such thing as strictly pro admin or opposition in this country. political allegiance is always dependent on the colors of padrinos. so, depende lang na kun asa ang usa ka politico naka kapit. always, it is person oriented, not political ideal-oriented. in effect, chatto and cajes are not strictly pro admin. they are simply pro GMA. if the next elected president would be from the opposition, tan-awa diba didto na pud na sila. that's how politics works in this country. depende lang kung asa maka pabor, adto sila.

usik-usik lang sa kwarta whatever amount is planned to be spent for a waste water treatment facility. this is because the waste water to be treated in the proposed plant is the same water that will be collected by the controversial system over which the governor and city mayor are trading barbs. what the authorities have to do to eliminate the need for a waste water treatment facility is very simple: cut the 38 or so illegal connections, period. you don't need to chemically treat rain water before it is allowed to fall out to sea because it doesn't contain e. coli, salmonella typhi or other bacteria for that matter. as it is, mr. dan lim, wittingly or unwittingly, creates the impression that he is willing to spend millions of people's money on account of these 38 illegal connectors! mosugot ba ta ani ???
#476
to be truthful, kapoy na kaayo basahon ni nga issue. it's so very simple a problem and yet even a city mayor and a provincial governor could not solve it. naa pay atienza nga kutob ra mo bark sa order pero walay ngipon. sa kadaghan nila including a cabinet secretary, provincial governor and a city mayor, wa gyud nila masuslbad ning problemaha nga simple ra unta kaayo. it only goes to show what kind of leaders we have. they are all so despicable! dapat ilisan, and never allowed to take public office ever again!

may i suggest that someone make a hard copy of this article and show it to argeo melisimo of FCB. sila ang nagpasimuno sa mga oil palm plantations sa bohol. we have been telling those people of the negative effects of oil palm farming to the environment thru the bohol environment management office (BEMO) of the provincial government of bohol as early as 2000 pero mga gahi gyud. they even got provincial government officials to their side to campaign for its promotion among farmers.

slackware: gipa salvage ni aguinaldo si bonifacio kay duha man sila nga lidersa katipunan. gusto niya mausa ang tanan by calling a convention. ang nakadaut lang, ang mga tauhan ni aguinaldo dautan ug plano. ilang gidaut si bonifacio behind his back and rigged the elections so that aguinaldo will come out the winner, labina nga ilang teritoryo ang venue sa convention. syempre pildi gyud ang dayo kaysa taga didto... in other words, gi salvage si bonifacio ni aguinaldo para siya (aguinaldo) and mahimong lider of the merged katipunan and then proclaim himself president, which is exactly what happened.

second highest growth rate among the ASEAN 5 daw. but the only ASEAN country to make it to the list of the world's hungriest countries. how very ironical! lupig pa ta sa laos and cambodia kay dili gutom didto... people can't eat economic growth rates but when people are hungry, it's very real.

fare rates should be adjusted according to the decrease in oil prices. since the price range of oil now is around the same as those of 2005, rate rates should be adjusted accordingly. which is php 7.00 for the first 4 kilometers and 1.00 for every succeeding kilometer instead of the present 7.50 for the first 4 kilometers and 1.50 for every succeeding kilometer. mr. lantion should be fired for sleeping on his job.

i'm just wondering what the DTI or the provincial government of bohol has been doing with regards to bamboo production. for the past several decades bohol has been producing bamboo-based native products and selling these to local and foreign markets. given the amount of bamboo that has been used since then, and the increasing volume of bamboo-based native products that bohol has produced over the years, i am wondering if appropriate government agencies are initiating activities to plant more bamboos or even other indigenous materials that are used in the production of other native products such as sig-id, romblon, nito, etc. dapat naay programa for replanting.

if we rely on conscience from people in government to do something to alleviate the plight of farmers having to contend with a losing proposition of spending so much money for seeds and farm inputs against a very low buying rate for palay set by rice traders, we are looking at something that is utterly impossible to happen... the filipino citizenry must push for reforms in rice production and trading policies. such as banning private individuals from engaging in rice trading. as it is now, the NFA already exists and it might as well be put to maximum use. this agency can be made the sole buyer of palay from farmers and the only agency allowed to sell rice to retailers. private entrepreneurs maybe allowed to play in the rice industry only as rice mill operators. this is the only way to maximize the income of rice farmers. by totally eliminating the middlemen in the trading process.
#489
that's good to know. there wasn't anything like that when i left bohol some years ago. boholanos can actually do more with coconut. there's coco sugar production.. VCO. they can transform coconut plantations as integrated farms and incorporate bananas, pineapples and cacao in their farms. does anyone know that the going price for cacao is around php 120.00 per kilo? the market for cacao is quite big too. local demand is supplied only with around 30% from local sources.

i might agree with bnc in regard to the opinion that COA is probably one of the least corrupt agencies of government. ang problema lang is after doing their primary function which is to conduct an audit, they can only report, period. if there is something irregular in their audit report, the COA does not do anything beyond reporting. there has been a lot of irregularities in government that have been reported by COA. if there is anyone who should pursue the investigation of irregularities reported by the COA, it should be the secretaries of the concerned agencies, or elected public officials if these iregularities occur in the LGU. dinhi nato makita nga ang atong mga officials dili molihok for a a variety of reasons. dapat we should have a law that punishes public officials who do not implement the laws of the land. this law should allow people to file these kind of charges in our courts. but more than anything else, we need a citizenry who will act, do something, to stop irregularities in government. without a citizenry of this kind, magpabilin lang gihapon ta forever nga corrupt country.

sure, manay tess. we can this discussion about coconut production. it maybe a traditional produce, even old, but it still has a lot of potential to make money especially now that there are additional uses that have been "discovered" from out of coconut by-products. in bohol, coconut husks are probably rotting away but in mindanao, it is made into an excellent export product and is making a lot of money for coco farmers.
#493
i agree with you, bnc. gasoline and diesel prices have gone down considerably. if i am not mistaken, it is the same price range of oil products back in 2005. dapat ibalik pud ang pletehan to 2005 levels which is 7.00 for the first 4 kilometers and 1.00 for every succeeding kilometers. hayahay kaayo ang mga drivers karon as well as others in the transport business. and makaluluoy and mga commuters. the ordinary people. they are the ones that are bearing the brunt of oil price changes. when oil prices go up, ngayo dayon mga drivers ug fare increase. when prices go down, they don't run out of excuses why the fare should not be rolled back, and at the same time saba sila kaayo kay mangayo pa gyud of oil price rollback maski barato na kaayo. mga bintahoso gyud. i think this is one very sickening with filipinos. bintahoso. kung sila ang mga dehado, saba kaayo. but then, when they are in a position mga mo give way, dili gyud mohatag ug lugak. in my estimation, mas dako pa ang take home pay karon sa mga drivers kaysa mga government employees including public school teachers. can you imagine that? what kind of society allows unschooled drivers to be better paid than public school teachers who must take board exams before the can practice their profession?

manay tess: to answer your question, i used to work for a consulting firm in a foreign-funded project implemented by the depatment of agrarian reform where we provide support services to agrarian reform beneficiaries such as crop production, animal dispersal, etc.. for a time i was assigned as site coordinator for agusan del sur where i saw first hand the status of oil palm production in the area.  there are plantations here that are already 30 years old and given the time this industy has been going on in the area, not many farmers have been convinced to follow suit given the extent of the area planted to oil palm, the existence of an oil mill serving the area notwithstanding. this is because they have seen the disadvantages of this monoculture crop including the fact that rats live in the trees all year round because they like to eat the fruits. when the rice plantations nearby are about to be harvested, the rats come down and raid the ricelands. when there are done and there's nothing to eat anymore, they go back to the palm trees. also, there are studies that show that land that has been planted to oil palm will not have sufficient soil nutrients to grow anything for about 20-30 years long after the trees have been cut, which is a very depressing prospect. dapat in bohol, they should just go on with the coconut industry which has been going on for a long time than go into a new industry that doesn't have a market anymore. you know, back in early 2000, i met an australian consultant who has been living in kuala lumpur and he said back then that malaysia has a huge problem of disposing its large inventory of palm oil because there was very little demand in the world market. mahathir mohammad who was then the prime minister of malaysia was even telling his technical people to fast track the invention of a system that would make use of palm oil as biofuel so that their inventory will not all go to waste. it was crazy that it was during this time when malaysia had a big problem of disposing its large stock of palm oil that FCB (with the help of government officials) would promote the establishment of oil palm plantations... speaking of PCA, there are still existent. i don't know how involved they are in the coconut industry in bohol as they should because bohol has a large area planted to coconut. i do know that they are involved in controling the cutting of coconut for lumber purposes to keep the coconut tree population in sufficient numbers. in mindanao, they are involved even in promoting the establishment of coco industries other than copra production. this include the production of coco-based food products such as virgin coconut oil, coco candy bars, as well as coco coir production which produces soil erosion control materials (made out of bunot) that has a huge export market. dapat boholanos should be doing all these as well.
#496
the establishment palm oil plantations in bohol was advanced by FCB officials in early 2000 so that farmers will avail of the lending window that they opened for oil palm production. i think even the provincial government encouraged farmers to plant palm oil. of course, the proponents (FCB and some government officials) did not tell farmers how destructive oil palm farming is to the soil and even to crops of farm lands that border these plantations. people should simply stop planting palm oil and go back to coconut farming. after all, both their end products are basically used for the same purpose. and additionally, unlike palm oil production which is monoculture in nature, coconut plantations can be used for integrated farming systems wherein other crops such as cacao, banana, and other crops can be grown inderneath the coconut groves and thereby maximizing farm production.

General Topic / Re: Sea Piracy Crisis
November 25, 2008, 05:32:54 PM
lorenzo: the americans are indifferent about somali piracy acts because they are either that -- indifferent -- or they simply don't have any business interest that particular area or the enterprise itself. why did they go to kuwait? why did they go to afghanistan? why did they go to iraq? they went because they have business interests in these areas, despite the staggering cost to wage a war halfway across the globe. the truth of the matter is that americans never act if they have no business interest. it's as simple as that... there is some truth to the opinions advanced by mike and layman. there might be business interests involved here. it is indeed no fiction that the computer viruses were created by people who discovered anti-virus programs, and that every once in a while a new strain of bacteria is deliberately (albeit secretly, of course) by the drug companies that create the medicines for it so that a newly-developed product will sell. same thing with GMO-laced agricultural produce. it's genetic composition is manipulated in such a way that farmers will be forever dependent for seedlings and fertilizers on the company that produce and supply them. it's all about big business.
