In a scene similar to the movie "Top Gun," Canadian fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers and prevented them from entering Canada's air space off the coast of Newfoundland.

Two CF-18 jets and crews "scrambled very quickly" to repel the Russian TU-95 long-range bombers, Defense Minister Peter McKay said Friday.

"This was a message, clearly, to them that we will have CF-18 fighter planes there to greet them every time," he added.

The pair of Russian "Bear" aircraft came "closer than we have seen in recent times," McKay noted, adding these occurrences are designed to "give the impression of greater power and greater assertiveness."

One of the recent previous attempts by the Russians occurred in February last year hours before U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to Canada. Then, two Russian bombers were intercepted just outside the Canadian Arctic and were turned back.

Critics suggest that publicity of the latest incident is well-timed with the Canadian government's recent announcement to spend $16 billion to buy 65 new F-35 fighter jets.

It's not known whether the Russian bombers, known as the Bear, were carrying nuclear weapons.

Avast Free 5, formerly known as the Home Edition, protects you with multiple guards. The antivirus, antispyware, and heuristics engines form a security core that also includes multiple real-time shields. The adjustable mail and file system shields join the pre-existing behavior, network, instant messaging, peer-to-peer, and Web shields. The behavioral shield is a common-sense feature, as security software publishers leverage their large user bases to detect threats early and warn others. Other new features include a silent-gaming mode and an "intelligent scanner" that only looks at changed files after establishing a baseline. The biggest change in Avast 5, though, is the interface. Gone is the music player default look, which was skinnable but confusing. In its place is a sleek UI that new users should find far more manageable. It's also Aero-friendly, with Explorer-style navigation buttons in case you can't remember where you tweaked a particular setting.

AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You'll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. Only for users in the United States, ITRU is a business partnership with Identity Guard which provides "consumer identity theft solutions," accessible only from the AVG toolbar in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

General Topic / Wedding of Chelsea Clinton
August 01, 2010, 06:12:29 PM
The daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has married her long-term boyfriend at a lavish ceremony.

Chelsea Clinton and investment banker Marc Mezvinsky were married at the Astor Courts estate in New York state.

Her parents said they felt "great pride and overwhelming emotion" at seeing their daughter married.

A no-fly zone was in place above the Hudson valley and nearby roads were closed as guests arrived in limousines.

The television star, Oprah Winfrey, film director Steven Spielberg, Hollywood actor Tom Hanks and singer Barbra Streisand are reportedly among the 500 guests.

In a statement released to confirm that the wedding had taken place on Saturday evening, Bill and Hillary Clinton said:

"We could not have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate the beginning of their life together, and we are so happy to welcome Marc into our family.

"On behalf of the newlyweds, we want to give special thanks to the people of Rhinebeck for welcoming us and to everyone for their well-wishes on this special day."

Earlier, actors Ted Danson and his wife Mary Steenburgen told reporters in the town of Rhinebeck, where many of those invited are staying, that they were both excited about attending the ceremony.

"I knew her since she was a baby so this is a big moment," Steenburgen said. "She's a lovely, lovely girl."

The wedding was expected to cost between $2m (£1.3m) and $3m (£1.9m), experts told the Associated Press.

Shopkeepers, innkeepers, retailers and caterers in Rhinebeck have been sworn to secrecy about the event and inconvenienced local residents have been offered complimentary bottles of wine.

Weird and Extreme / Blind Man World's Fastest Driver
August 01, 2010, 06:06:32 PM
Mike has spent two days training for the attempt, and now the weather has started to improve.

A bank manager from Sale in Greater Manchester will attempt to become the world's fastest blind man.

Mike Newman is hoping to drive a supercar at more than 200mph (321 km/h) to reclaim the world blind speed record in Carmarthenshire.

It was taken earlier this year by a Turkish driver, Metin Sentuk, who reached 187mph (301km/h).

He will be guided across Pendine sands by his father, who is also his trainer, watching from a helicopter overhead.

Mr Newman experienced a setback during a practice run yesterday, after his car began to spin and suffered minor damage.

Checks and repairs are being made to see if the attempt can resume later.

Mr Newman, 48, who was born blind, is also raising money for charity, including Guide Dogs for the Blind, and to encourage motor sport for the disabled.

The business manager with Barclays said: "I've been a keen motorsports fan most of my life and this has given me an opportunity of a lifetime - a dream to drive a super car.

"In the process of that I get the chance to break the land-speed record for a blind driver, driving unaccompanied."

The car being used is British-built, the Keating TKR, designed and manufactured by Keating Supercars Ltd in Manchester. - BBC News

While warehouses in Metro Manila are swimming in a sea of  spoiled imported rice, the same is not true in Bohol.

Thus declared Peng Evasco, assistant provincial manager of the National Food Authority when sought for comments arising from reports that warehouses in Metro Manila were found to have stocked thousands of sacks of rotten imported rice.

The startling revelation followed after President Noynoy Aquino III exposed in his first State of the National Address (Sona) Monday the alleged over importation of rice in 2004 and 2007.

The importation was way beyond the shortage figure estimated by the cereal agency when the country was suffering from a food crisis.

In one instance in 2007, an election year, the rice shortage was pegged at something like 500,000 metric tons and the government imported 1.3 million metric tons.

The over importation resulted in rice glut in several Metro warehouses causing the stocks to rot and crawling with rice pests.

The reported over importation put on the spot third district Cong. Arthur Yap who was the secretary of agriculture at the time the importation was made.

Interviewed in the sidelines of the Batasan after the President’s Sona, the Bohol solon said that if at all there was over importation it was done through the collective decision of at least two collegial bodies.

He said before any decision to import rice was made, he said, the same will pass

through a collegial body composed of representatives from the DA, Department of Trade & Industry, Bureau of Agricultural Extension, NFA, etc.

Then another body, the Rice and Corn Council, will pass judgment to what has been recommended by the other layer in the bureaucracy.

This means, according to the former DA secretary, no way will any importation will pass without any thorough scrutiny.

   BOHOL STOCKS

In the case of Bohol warehouses filled with enormous rice inventory,

Evasco said the tendency of   rotting stockpile is out of the question since the local agency is following a procurement plan based on the consumption requirement of a given time.

During the same interview, Evasco also explained that imported rice is not being relied upon in NFA’s inventory because the agency is also in the forefront of buying palay from farmers especially during harvest season.

However, since the cereal agency is also a recipient of imported rice from its Manila office, its warehouses sometimes is teeming with stockpiles of the staple just like what happened last week when it received shipment of 10,000 sacks of Vietnam rice.

Before irate Sangguniang Kabataan members lynched her to pieces for her failure to render a financial accounting of P20 million SK fund, the national president of  the youth organization asked for understanding before she is subjected to vicious black propaganda.

National SK federation president Jane Censoria Cajes was in the eye of a storm lately  after she was lambasted by a group identifying itself as SK Pilipinas for her failure to render a financial report of SK money the youth organization  received from different fund sources.

In a statement posted in its Faceboook account, SK Pilipinas took to task Cajes’ unyielding stance in its demand for accounting.

The complainant aired its complaint as the SK held its national congress starting July 29 until yesterday in at least two venues, one of which was the Panglao Island Nature Resort.

SK Pilipinas whose derogatory statement was also e-mailed to all media outlets in Bohol waited in vain for Cajes to render the financial report during the last congress.

Speaking in Pilipino, the complaining group said congress participants were frustrated to learn that Cajes did not make good her promise to render the financial audit of the funds it received.

Apparently, Cajes promised to make the report in the 2nd congress after she was confronted why she was mum when issues about the financial standing of the organization were discussed. The financial report was awaited in the SK congress in Subic last year but Cajes was also tight lipped in that second national gathering.

Came the 3rd one and the SK president still failed to make her report.

The group was made to believe that Cajes would make the accounting in her speech before the congress participants at the PINR.

However,  as she made her speech, not even a hint regarding the status of the financial statement (FS) was made, the group observed.

Citing transparency and accountability to drive home its point for the lady  Cajes to render the accounting, the group said it’s demand was very simple.

It mentioned that for Cajes to clear her name, all she will do is publish even thru Facebook, the financial statement of the Sangguniang Kabataan National Federation (SKNF) including attachments.

The group demanded at least five FS from Cajes.

They included the P10 million fund given in 2008 whose source was the Presidential Social Fund; another P10 million given in 2009 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources; FS of 2008 congress in Cebu; FS of the 2009 congress in Subic and FS of the national convention launching the Sama sama para sa Kalikasan which was  held in Bohol last year.

At the same time, the runaway SK group also asked for the truth regarding donations coming from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Pagcor and Department of National Defense.

Calling Cajes a hypocrite, the group said they were told when they asked for the FS to go to her office in Manila.

The group said Cajes was trying to mislead the SK members when she said that the audit report is in her office. The group asked how can it be possible for SK members from the Visayas and Mindanao to go to her Manila office  just to inquire about the status of the report.

The group said the most opportune time for Cajes to make an accounting of the donated money could have been the recent 3rd national SK congress which ended yesterday,

   CAJES REPLY

In a two-page press statement, the young Cajes, daughter of former second district congressman Roberto Cajes fought back saying the malicious accusations spread thru e-mail were plain and simple political black propaganda.

She suspected that the derogatory statement posted in Facebook was orchestrated by people or group who are desperately opting to start chaos, since the congress that has recently been concluded was a tremendous success.

Answering the allegations hurled against her, Cajes said “I have never hidden anything from the people, most especially the SK sector which I am serving with all the best I  can”.

â€œI have been answering queries and issues regarding the FS since the campaign period last summer”, she said.

She continued: The financial; statements are ready. The SKNF has commissioned an external bookkeeper and auditor who checked, verified, and helped the federation to prepare the financial statements. All documents (receipts, invoices, vouchers) are intact and they are in proper order in the custody of  our office.

Cajes produced a certification from an accountant identified as Maria Annabelle Honculada certifying that the SKNF has commissioned her to perform bookkeeping and auditing/accounting of the funds of the federation and their respective disbursements and expenditures to constitute the Financial Statement of the federation.

On the request that it be published in Facebook, Cajes said she’s afraid the website is not the official venue to publish such official documents.

Talk of the Town / Natural Resources in Bohol
August 01, 2010, 05:46:07 PM
By Sunday Post

Responding to the call for a multi-sectoral partnership to strike a balance in making Bohol a prime eco-tourism destination with the drive for sustainable development, stakeholders dared local officials to take a closer look on “documented violations” on environmental laws perpetrated by owners of hotels and resorts particularly in Panglao Island.

â€œBefore it is too late, local authorities and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) need to inspect resorts and hotels whether these establishments pass regulatory standards â€" from complying with building permits to sanitary and environmental clearances â€" and inform the public on the real state of the environment,” said a stakeholder, who owns a resort and operates other businesses in Panglao.

Another potential investor reacted sharply to reports on the unbridled degradation of corals surrounding Balicasag Island while structures along the shorelines of Panglao within the 20-meter salvage zone are left unchecked despite a public clamor to enforce the said law.

Both sources said the sad state of coral reefs in Balicasag and coastal pollution brought about by irresponsible development and mass tourism is threatening the sustainability of the province’s ecotourism industry and efforts in making Bohol a world-class tourist destination.

Stakeholders noted that Governor Edgar Chatto has made a clear-cut policy direction towards the achievement of economic goals by setting off the rural economy with the maximization of local resources for sustainable growth.

The stakeholders agreed with the governor saying that Boholanos, in general, need to join hands in managing its natural resources, especially in protecting habitats and biodiversity.

They however criticized some resort owners in Panglao who have been opposing development and projects â€" whether government initiated or with the entry of new investors â€" while posturing themselves as protectors of the environment and exploiting the sad plight of fisherfolks.

However, those who have been vocal in opposing said projects are the top violators of “environmental laws” and are blatantly disregarding the same even as other resort owners have complied, the source stressed.

As Boholanos are known for their strong sense of identity and love for nature, the stakeholders are optimistic that local officials would finally act against these violations and address the degradation of our coral reef system caused by irresponsible scuba diving and other tourist activities.

â€œWe cannot allow our province to lose its attraction. As we take care of our natural resources, we also protect ourselves and our future,” one of the stakeholders said.

The source said that tourism, development can go hand in hand with caring for the environment.

They added that while local leaders are making an all-out effort to create a strong and healthy eco-tourism industry, they must also make sure that the environment is well taken care of.

Representatives Arthur Yap and Erico Aumentado are among the eager beavers in the House as they were able to introduce a total of 10 bills between them within the first month in office.

Yap, who represents the third district, came out as the early topnotcher with a total of six bills filed while Aumentado of the second district posted four including one which was co-authored by Yap .

The House of Representative website did not show any bill filed at this point by Rep. Rene Relampagos of the first district.

Yap’s first bill, HB00158, seeks to promote agricultural and marine production and post-harvest mechanization by exempting from payment of the expanded value added tax the importation of agricultural and fisheries machineries and amending for this purpose section 109 of the National Internal Revenue Code.

Also filed on his first working day last July 1 was HB00159 which is “An Act Imposing a Limit on Election Campaign Contributions, Amending for the Purpose Section 95 of Batas Pambansa Blg. 881, as Amended, Otherwise Known as the Omnibus Election Code, and for Other Purposes”.

Yap also filed HB00161 which seeks to strengthen and redefine the powers and functions of the National Food Authority and amending Presidential Decree Nos. 4 and 1770 respectively known as the National Grains Authority act and the National Food Authority Act.

The former Agriculture secretary also filed a bill which seeks to liberalize the export of rice and other grains or related agricultural products and amending for this purpose Presidential Decree No. 4.

Another Yap bill, HB01235 seeks to protect credit card users, limiting interest rates and penalty charges and providing penalties for violations.

Yap ’s seventh bill seeks to prohibit the imposition of expiration of prepaid cards, certificates or other devices or prepayment of goods and services and providing penalties for violations.

Meanwhile, Aumentado first bill is HB00385 which is “An Act Reorganizing and Modernizing the National Bureau of Investigation, Providing Necessary Funds Therefore, and For Other Purposes”.

His second bill, similarly filed last July 1, seeks to establish the Second Engineering District of Bohol to be located in his hometown of Ubay and appropriating funds for it.

The third Aumentado bill provides for the conversion of the provincial roads in the town of Pres. Garcia into national roads and appropriating funds for their maintenance and improvement.

The former governor’s fourth bill seeks the conversion of the Guindulman-Anda-Candijay Road and the Candijay-Mabini-Ubay Road from provincial to national roads, and appropriating funds for their improvement and maintenance.

This bill was co-authored by Yap .

Anyone could post a picture of tambaloslos? Sayang wala pay digital cam kaniadto.

sagpa ni ninyo mga Arroyo sa inyong greed for power

By Philippine Daily Inquirer

Even the country’s only umbrella organization of watchmen and security agencies denied having ever met, much less consulted with, their supposed representative in Congress.

The Philippine Association of Detective and Protection Agency Operations Inc. on Friday said Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo did not consult them when he ran as nominee of Ang Galing Pinoy, a party-list group that supposedly champions the rights of security guards and tricycle drivers.

Ramon Bergado, Padpao president, said he was not aware of Arroyo’s relationship with other members of their group and if the son of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was supported by security guards as he claimed.

“In my capacity as president of Padpao, I don’t know if he ever talked with our members individually (prior to the May elections),” Bergado told the INQUIRER over the phone.

“All I can say is that officially,” he said, “Padpao members did not campaign for Mikey Arroyo and his group.”

Bohol Latest News / Bohol's Fight Against Rabbies
July 30, 2010, 04:32:24 PM
By Ven Arigo

Bohol leaders are “barking on a right tree” because the search for the best anti-rabies fighters is essential to agriculture and tourism, two of the “HEAT”  priorities of the new capitol administration.

HEAT means Health, Education, Agriculture and Tourism. Award organizers said there is no need to explain how can the fight against rabies serve the people’s health.

No less than Gov. Edgar Chatto led in launching during the opening of the Sandugo Agri-Technology Fair the Gov. Edgar M. Chatto Awards for Best Performing Municipal Rabies Prevention and Eradication Councils (MRPECs) and Bantay Rabies sa Barangay (BRBs).

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Stella Marie Lapiz briefly yet effectively hinted on how “essential”  is the anti-rabies campaign to agriculture and tourism.

A tourist fatally bitten by a rabid dog in Bohol can discourage other tourists from going to Bohol, Lapiz asserted.

For the number one government animal doctor and anti-rabies officer in the province, tourists who are already staying in the province will likely fear to roam around on feet to avoid dog bite.

They can thus miss more satisfying sight at or intimate experience with Bohol nature.

The mere sight of a stray dog can intimidate the tourists, some who were listening to Lapiz seconded the provincial veterinarian whose office has been frontlining the anti-rabies campaign provincewide.

Because of its domino impact on so many other industries, tourism has been declared in the National Tourism Act of 2009 as an engine for economic recovery and growth.  The law, also known as Republic Act 9593, was principally authored in Congress by Chatto.

As the then First District solon, Chatto likewise authored Republic Act 09446 declaring Bohol as the Eco-cultural Tourism Capital of the Philippines.

On the other hand, the case of a rabid dog bite can be so economically wounding on a lowly farmer owning the culprit animal.

He has to spend as much as P25,000 for the treatment of the victim of his dog.  Because he has no money, the poor farmhand will be forced to sell his lifetime farm co-worker, his carabao, Lapiz said.

Losing his carabao can render the lowly farmer less productive, what with the four-legged beast of burden his only “machine” for cultivation.

Former agriculture secretary and now Third District Rep. Arthur Yap, also present in launching of the search, himself observed that a Bohol rice farmer’s yield is lesser compared to the harvest of the farmers in other provinces.

This is occurring despite the existing of more irrigation facilities and lesser storms in Bohol, the solon said.

Agriculture Regional Director Ricardo Oblena, provincial Agriculturist Liza Quirog and her assistant, Larry Pamugas, also attended the affair.  Pamugas is the designated head of the Office of the Provincial Agriculture since Quirog has been tasked by the governor to head a sensitive coordinating unit.

Yap did not speculate, though, on “how can rabies frustrate a farmer” since he chose to focus on what crops can a farmer cultivate to earn more per hectare.  The ex-secretary of agriculture even burst to “forget” the “low-paying crops.”

Lapiz” statements relating rabies to agriculture and tourism still obviously “made sense”  to her listeners during the launching of the search, which institutionalization was firmed up in a symbolic signing also led by the governor.

In motherhood statement, Bohol has been envisioned to become a prime eco-cultural tourism destination and a balanced agro-industrial province.

Bohol used to be one of the top three provinces in deaths due to rabies, but this cannot guarantee of no rabies death to occur again if efforts to prevent any are relaxed.

In launching the Bohol-wide search for best anti-rabies councils, the governor at the same time took the occasion as an apt time to acknowledge Lapiz’ office and her personnel.

The Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPV) is one of the most effective offices of the provincial government, according to Chatto.

The governor cited not just OPV’s sustained programs on dog vaccination, elimination and information drive on responsible pet ownership.

He lauded OPV’s effective handling of the province’s livestock development thrust thru the Barangay Livestock Aides (BALA), a provincial anti-poverty program winning the national Galing Pook Award.

Lapiz has entrusted BALA to an able provincial coordinator of the program, Robert Milan Galero, an OPV personnel and officer of the Bohol Tri-Media Association.

The BALA was established when the governor was then Rene Relampagos, now the First District congressman, and the vice governor was Chatto himself.

Relampagos attended, too, the launching of the search for the best council against the killer rabies.

Winners of the Bohol search can be known in mid-August to compete in the national level. (Ven rebo Arigo)

SOME 831 Catigbian high school students and elementary pupils planted some 4,155 seedlings in a day as they marked the 156th Bohol Day with a tradition that may be seen as an innovation.

Now on its fourth year and averaging a couple of thousand fruit trees surviving annually, Catigbian Mayor Roberto Salinas said it may not be long before his people can just stop from going to the city to buy fruits when they can easily raise some.

Some few years ago, Salinas bemoaned that his town, which is largely agricultural, has lost most of its fruit trees and this has also driven the birds away.

To put a cap on the problem, he asked his people to institute a measure to regain the fruit trees.

This year’s simultaneous Bohol Day tree planting netted 660 hybrid coconut seedlings, 792 jackfruits, 837 marang, 293 santol, 385 tambis, 265 chicos, 246 duhat, 64 rambutans, 528 mangoes and 85 guavas, Salinas shared in a text message.

He shared he was just fortunate that his dream of regaining the distinction as a fruit producing town has its stern supporters at the town council.

Supplemented by an ordinance crafted in 2007, the municipal tree planting project involves graduating pupils in the elementary and students in the high schools, including the municipal scholars association members planting at least five fruit trees as a requisite for graduation.

The barangay agriculture committee chair validates the tree-planting project as he does his rounds in his area.

He again occasionally makes the rounds before graduation to see that the trees survive or were replanted so that he can certify that the student or pupil can be qualified for graduation.

Now envisioning as a green town for progress and development, Salinas, who is now on his final term has done considerably good for the local government and in uniting its people while implementing stand-out infrastructure hardware and manpower software development through trainings and capacitation activities.

The ultimate goal is to uplift the economic condition of the people as they deserve to a better life, Salinas said. (rachiu/PIA-Bohol)

CASH SALES, including booked and under negotiation purchases surpassed the P31.1M target for this year.

The Sandugo Regional Products Showcase 2010, which started as small provincial products fair in Bohol graduated to one of the region’s most awaited annual fairs proved anew the promise available for cottage industries as the materials fusion this year brings a million more in target sales, data from the trade department revealed.

From the department’s unofficial and yet reliable source, cash sales generated from the five day showcase reached P2.81 million, booked sales racked up P17 and another under negotiations reached P12.62 million to sum a gross sales of P32, 466, 836.00 a few minutes before the official closing of the fair last Sunday.

Now into its 21st year of showcasing raw materials form Visayas’ diverse environmental resource, the new lines produced our of its research and development initiatives lay out the agency’s efforts to be environmentally conscious about the finite resources, explains DTI information Officer Jojie Villamor during the fair pre-opening press conference last week at the Prawn farm of the Island City Mall.

Working with climate change and its mitigation, the new trend is to fuse recyclables with the indigenous raw materials and showcase the artistic capacity of Visayans to produce stunning designs for the international market, added DTI Provincial Director Ma. Elena Arbon.

We are presented here with a 50% cut in raw materials and another 5o% cut in garbage as these [products] end up as hand-woven patterns in bags and fashion accessories, said DTI Regional Director Asteria Caberte at the media forum.

According to Arbon, the showcase marks the culmination of the product development initiatives geared towards providing importers with the raw materials that would make it big in the international markets.

The biggest winners however are the Visayan craftsmen who would ultimately get an increase in income to further boost their economic spending.

Raffia and pandanus, Bohol’s most hopeful raw materials are now slowly engaging rural families who see the promise of providing the designs for the next century’s world fashion. (rac/PIABohol)

It could be click alright.

With 55 amateur and professional photographer participants coming out to outdo each other during the PITIK: Tipik sa Sugong Bol-anon 2010 Sandugo Street Dancing Festival Photo Competition, the contest goal was attained and more artistic photographers are now coming out in the main stream, said contest convenor Nilo Sapong.

The shots were spectacular, amazing and it did give top caliber judges a hard time choosing the finalists, said the photojournalist and veteran local lensman.

Cebu Daily News lensman Tonee Despujo and Manila Bulletin’s Visayas-Mindanao photojournalist Cheryl Baldicantos chose ten finalists, but even the non chosen shots are worth a good run for any challenger considering the artistry we never thought was in the Boholano young artists, he added.

55 professional and amateur photographers jostled for positions and crisscrossed the Sandugo Streetdancing Parade route July 25, to be at the exact moment when dancers would show in split-seconds that character that immortalizes a Boholano.

We sought a permit from city deputy mayor Mariano Uy just to be able to allow our participants to go beyond the cordons and get as close to where the action is to get our goal, Sapong added.

Pitik, a photo contest convened by budding photo-enthusiasts in Bohol envisions to capture images immortalizing the Boholano character which has been neatly imbedded in a clash of cultures as a melting pot owing to its becoming a major tourism destination in the Visayas.

The winning entry owning the best in composition award is entry with control number 1016 and entitles the lensman Keith Joseph Sepe an overnight stay for two at the posh Bohol Tropics Resort in Tagbilaran City. He also gets a specialized trophy from Deputy Mayor Mariano Uy.

On the other hand, entry number 1037 of Benedict Ong earned the nod of veretan judges as first runner up, his winning entry entitling him for an overnight stay for two and breakfast at La Pernela Resort in San Isidro Dauis.

Cebuana artist Cathy Angeles submitting entry number 1049 grabbed second runner up which would allow her a full Cignal Digital Cable TV package with three months free load.

Top three winners also get free rides at Danao Extreme Eco-Adventure at the EcoPark in Magtangtang Danao.

Contest finalists are two entries from Sherwin Sapong 1045, Charlou Cabangal with his entry 1029, Raymund Buslon (1044), Mark Glen Cagampang (1042), Lawrence Uy (1007), Sherwin Sapong (1045) and Rufino Malalis (1011).

Finalists are also entitled to refreshments at Dunkin Donuts, Allison Restaurant and certificates (PIABohol)

People who feel insecure in their relationships may be at increased risk for cardiovascular disease and other health problems, according to a new Canadian study.

In fact, those who felt insecure in relationships or avoided getting close to others appeared to have a greater risk of developing several chronic diseases, according to an analysis of data from the U.S. National Comorbidity Survey Replication.

Researchers studied survey data from 5,645 adults, ages 18 to 60, and found an association between "avoidant attachment" -- people who feel unable to get close to others or have others depend on them -- and chronic pain, such as frequent or severe headaches.

People who were insecure in their relationships had further risks. "Anxious attachment" -- a tendency to worry about rejection in relationships, feel overly needy and find that others are reluctant to get close -- was associated with a wide range of health problems, including heart-related diseases, such as stroke, heart attack and high blood pressure. Anxious attachment was also linked to a higher risk of chronic pain and ulcers.

The study was recently published in the journal Health Psychology.

LGU Philippines / Bachelor's Pad for Noynoy Aquino
July 30, 2010, 10:07:21 AM
By Christian V. Esguerra
Philippine Daily Inquirer

The country’s most tightly guarded bachelor’s pad comes complete with a swimming pool, a Bali-style garden, ample space for a pool table, three new bedroomsâ€"and, well, that occasional “smell.”

The smell of the Pasig River.

The prewar Bahay Pangarap located across the Pasig River from Malacañang would be ready by the weekend for its new occupant, President Aquino, according to the chief of the Presidential Security Group (PSG).

“It’s up to him how he wants to decorate,” Col. Ramon Dizon told reporters yesterday. “They’ve started cleaning the house two days ago, but this weekend we will be ready whenever the President wants to transfer.”

Under previous administrations since the Commonwealth era, the Bahay Pangarap (House of Dreams) usually served as venue for formal dinners and other social functions.

While retaining its art deco look, the house was recently renovated and refurbished to suit the needs of the country’s first bachelor Chief Executive. Malacañang tapped architect Manny Dimaculangan to rework the spacious bungalow.

Three more bedrooms were added to the existing master bedroom. Dizon said they would be reserved for Mr. Aquino’s occasional guests, security detail and household staff.

Family members could come over, but the renovations did not really consider providing long-term lodgings for such visitors.

What do poet Robert Frost, professional ring announcer Michael Buffer and Spiderman have in common?

Their famous lines have found their way into boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao’s first privilege speech as Sarangani representative.

Pacquiao Tuesday delivered the second speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, where he outlined his plans for the province, thanked his supporters and mentors, admitted to being star-struck in the company of his esteemed colleagues, and shared his enthusiasm for his new job.

“So, let’s get started on this road to progress. I am tempted to quote Robert Frost,” Pacquiao said and made good his threat. “‘The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.’ However, due to the effervescence of my youth, I will instead quote Michael Buffer: ‘Let’s get ready to rumble!’”

He was just warming up.

“Pagpasensyahan niyo po si Manny Pacquiao kung mahuli niyo akong nakatitig sa inyo paminsan-minsan. Paghanga lang po sa inyong lahat honorable Ma’ams and Sirs (Please excuse Manny Pacquiao if you catch him staring at you from time to time. I am just admiring you all, honorable Ma’ams and Sirs),” the neophyte congressman said in Filipino.

Suddenly, Spiderman

Pacquiao described his growing up years as a life of poverty and hardship. He said it was hard to believe that he had come this farâ€"that he was now in a position to help the hungry, the homeless and the hopeless, especially his constituents in Sarangani.
“It is clear to me that it is my duty to help them. To whom much is given, much is [expected],” and dropped this quote from the amazing Spiderman: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

The boxing icon followed it up with this promise: “I have reaped a tremendous harvest of success. It is time to use it for the good of others.”

Police tracked down a suspect in a series of grisly robberies and murders with the help of his Facebook account, officials said Tuesday.

Mark Dizon, a 28-year-old computer technician, did not resist when arrested while talking with his father in a public square in San Fernando City in Pampanga, police Senior Supt. Danilo Bautista said.

He is accused of killing nine people â€" six Filipinos, an American, a Canadian and a Briton â€" in three different robberies at hotels and homes this month in Angeles City. The area, near the former US-run Clark Air Force Base, is home to many retired expatriates.

Dizon, who is from a well-off family and according to police had a fascination with guns, was Facebook friends with the daughter of one of the victims. A friend of her family showed his photo on the popular social networking site to witnesses to help identify him, police said.

“He was fond of computers and this gave him away,” Bautista told The Associated Press.

Dizon denied involvement in the killings, Bautista said.

The string of deadly robberies started July 12, when Canadian Geoffrey Alan Bennun, 60, and his Filipino girlfriend were shot to death after a robber broke into their hotel room.

Four days later, Briton James Bolton Porter, 51, and his girlfriend were killed by a gunman in their house in Angeles’ Malabanas village, police said.

Dizon allegedly later pawned some of the possessions taken from Bennun, including a laptop and a cell phone, Bautista said, adding investigators have secured pawnshop records and close-circuit television camera footage showing him with the stolen objects in the shop.

Last week, a gunman killed American Albert Mitchell, a 70-year-old World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force, along with his Filipino wife, Janet, 53, and three Filipino staff inside their Angeles home, Bautista said.

In the last killing, the fleeing gunman was seen by a village guard and a motorcycle taxi driver, who later described him to investigators, according to police.

After hearing descriptions of the suspect, a family friend of the Mitchells looked up Dizon’s Facebook page â€" the Mitchells’ daughter was one of his friends on the site. He showed the Facebook profile photo to the witnesses, who identified him as the man fleeing they saw, Bautista said.
