i am very angry.  i received notice that my checking account is dormant.  it only means one thing:  they're going to deduct from my account every day.  please, banker whoever you are, just so i can sleep tonight (my checking account is in cebu while i'm in manila), answer these questions:

1.  can any bank change the dormancy period?  i deposited an amount in january of this year.  it's not one year yet, right?  suffice it to say that no check was issued nor any deposit made since january 2011.  still, it's not a year yet.

2.  does a bank change the maintaining balance for all its depositors, including those who were clients long before their new maintaining balance was imposed?  i started with this checking account knowing that the minimum maintaining balance was 5,000.  then they changed it to 10,000.  now they've racked it up to 25,000!

3.  why punish depositors (who "lend" their money to the bank by way of deposits) with fines once the deposit is below their declared maintaining balance?  remember, they keep on increasing the maintaining balance on their own.  (with the silly tag 'as agreed upon'; who is agreeing?)  depositors are punished for "lending" less?  uh-huh.

i hate that bank.  i'm going to burn the wires tomorrow (luoy akong cell phone load, huhuhu) and quarrel them all i can.  i know i won't win.  but i'll give them a mouthful anyway.

that bank is a money trap.  >:(

Launching the rock theatrical “We Will Rock You” in 2002 was a gamble that paid off, breathing new life into Queen’s music by allowing fans to enjoy their hits played live.

More than 13 million people have seen it worldwide, including 5.5 million at London’s Dominion Theater.

A sequel is planned, using songs not in the existing musical, though the original keeps packing out theaters.

Queen went back on the road again in 2005 when they joined forces with former Free singer Paul Rodgers.

Their collaboration spawned giant arena tours plus a studio album “The Cosmos Rocks” (2008) before Rodgers returned to his solo career.

One outdoor show in Kharkiv â€" Queen’s first in Ukraine â€" played to 350,000 people, highlighting the enduring support for the band.

In a 1987 interview, Mercury told journalist David Wigg he had no fears of becoming a lonely, rich 70-year-old.

“I’ve lived a full life and if I’m dead tomorrow, I don’t give a damn. I really have done it all,” he said.

Born Farrokh Bulsara on September 5, 1946 to a Parsi Indian family living on the East African spice island of Zanzibar and educated at an English-style boarding school in India, the shy teenager arrived in London when his family fled the 1964 Zanzibar revolution.

The classic image of Mercury is him in his 1986 touring costume, moustachioed and with one fist raised to the sky, a pose captured in the statue of him in Montreux on the Swiss shores of Lake Geneva.

When they felt able, his three bandmates painstakingly produced full tracks from scraps of vocals an ailing Mercury had recorded there in 1991, in precious hours when he could muster the strength.

Once he could no longer record, Mercury decided to come off his medication.

The subsequent album, “Made In Heaven”, released in 1995, is one of Queen’s best sellers.

Facing up to life without Mercury was tough.

May plunged into severe depression, having also lost his father and his marriage and contemplated suicide.

Like May, Taylor produced two solo albums in the 1990s, but despite their efforts to move on from Queen, they learned to embrace their legacy.

Bassist John Deacon retired in 1997 and has vanished from the public eye, though May and Taylor have his blessing to carry on.

The jukebox musical “We Will Rock You”, launched in 2002, still plays to a packed house in London and has been staged around the world from Australia to South Africa, Japan, Europe and Las Vegas.

With interest still high, a film about Mercury, starring Borat creator Sacha Baron Cohen, is in the pipeline, focusing on the years leading up to Queen’s stellar performance at the Live Aid concert in 1985.

“Even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever,” May wrote in a blog marking Mercury’s 65th birthday in September.

“He will always epitomise the perfect frontman â€" the consummate channel of communication between a band and an audience.

“He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come.”

In a statement on Nov. 23, 1991, Mercury confirmed from his death bed that he had AIDS.

Within 24 hours he had fallen into a coma and passed away, having handled his illness in private and never complained of his suffering.

As one of the highest-profile victims of AIDS, his death brought greater awareness of the virus and helped remove the stigma from a disease now ravaging southern Africa.

Queen still reigns 20 years on from Mercury’s death

Agence France-Presse

LONDON â€" Freddie Mercury died 20 years ago on Thursday but his star has only burned brighter in the two decades since, with Queen and their larger-than-life frontman as popular as ever.

The British rockers, marking their 40th anniversary this year, are among the world’s biggest-selling artists ever â€" with most of their sales coming in the 20 years since Mercury died.

Queen’s guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor are busier than ever and Mercury’s songs such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Don’t Stop Me Now” still endure as classics.

The Independent on Sunday newspaper said the singer’s death “seemed a mere hiccup in his career”.

In the years since, Mercury’s stock has risen, with a new generation of artists citing Queen among their influences, including Lady Gaga, Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters and Muse.

Mercury, 45, died at his London home on November 24, 1991. He had been diagnosed HIV positive several years earlier and died of bronchial pneumonia, brought on by AIDS.

Queen’s lead singer is remembered for his captivating live performances, spellbinding vocals and enduring hits including “We Are The Champions”, “Killer Queen”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”.

5: Dumbarton Oaks, USA

Dumbarton Oaks is a famous 19th century mansion situated in Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) famous for its gardens. Currently housing the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, a scholarship center for Byzantine studies and landscape architecture history ( since the year 1940) which now publishes the journal Dumbarton Oaks Papers and other reference books in their major field, this mansion was built in 1800 as a residence to U.S. Senator and Vice President John C. Calhoun. However, later, it was bought and owned by Robert Woods Bliss and his wife Mildred Barnes Bliss who in turn was an art collector and thus cherished a taste for “classical” masterpieces with beautiful creativity.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a majestic garden which was constructed between 1905 and 1912 at Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the Mediterranean coastline of the south eastern corner of France by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild. It is a beautiful garden built on the headland on the isthmus of Cap Ferrat. An example of exemplary human-made structure surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty. The building in itself is simply “Exquisite” with its antique furniture, rare porcelain collections and lavish green gardens which already have been notified to be the “Notable Gardens of France” by the French government. The atmosphere in the garden is so serene that it will hold your breath for a while and soothe your senses.

This beautiful garden has Crystal Springs Lake at the north and it is situated at the eastern slope of Santa Cruz Mountains. The lake at the north, pleasant atmosphere and placement at the Pacific coast range increase the beauty of this garden. Spread over 654 acre, out of which 16 acres contain the formal garden, looks like heaven on earth. The stunning beauty and special event at Filoli makes every season an enjoyable season. The house and garden facility are also available from mid-February to end of October. my name is tiny bubbles.  my live is tagbilaran city.  my old is 1 year old...

7) Miatt (Germany)

Country living up to stereotype alert! Surprise, surprise the Germans are somewhat officious when it comes to baby naming laws. Regulation-loving Deutschland has an entire department (the Standesamt) which decides if names are suitable. Miatt was rejected because it didn't clearly show whether the child was a boy or a girl, but sometimes the decisions are somewhat arbitrary...

Has Germany banned any other names? The likes of Stompie, Woodstock and Grammophon were turned down, whereas the similarly strange Speedy, Lafayette and Jazz were allowed.

8 ) Anus (Denmark)

What is it about Scandinavian countries and name laws? The Danes are even tougher than the Swedes in this regard, with parents given 7,000-odd names to choose from by the government. Special permission is needed to deviate from the list, with ethnic names, odd spellings and even compound surnames forbidden. Luckily for him (we assume it's a 'he'), Anus was one of 250-odd names rejected each year.

Has Denmark banned any other names? Well, Pluto and Monkey had lucky escapes...

9) Ovnis (Portugal)

Before naming your child in Portugal, best consult this mammoth, 80-page government doc (and have it translated to English) that tells you which names you can and can't use. It's pretty strict (and random) â€" Tomás is OK but Tom isn't â€" and celebs can forget about the likes of Apple and Brooklyn, which aren't even on the banned list. Essex girls rejoice, however â€" Mercedes is allowed!

Has Portugal banned any other names? There are more than 2,000 names on the reject list, including Ovnis - Portuguese for UFO.

10) Akuma AKA Devil (Japan)

Here's a name the Pope definitely wouldn't approve of. In 1993 a Japanese parent called his son Akuma (which literally means Devil). The authorities decided this was an abuse of the parent's rights to decide a child's name and a lengthy court battle ensued. Eventually the father backed down and junior got a new, less demonic name.

Has Japan banned any other names? Lots. Names must use one of the 2,232 'name kanji' characters decided by the government.

ich bin ein berliner!

4) Gesher AKA 'Bridge' (Norway)

Back in 1998 those nasty Norwegians threw a woman in jail (admittedly for only two days) when she failed to pay a fine for giving her son an 'unapproved' name. Eccentric Kristi Larsen said she was instructed in a dream to name her son Gesher (Hebrew for 'Bridge'), but the court were having none of it. Kristi did have 13 children already though, so maybe she had just run out of ideas.

Has Norway banned any other names? Undoubtedly, though in recent times they have replaced their list of officially sanctioned names with a general ban on monikers featuring swearing, sex and illnesses.

5) Chow Tow AKA 'Smelly Head' (Malaysia)

Unlike many countries which are gradually relaxing name laws, Malaysian authorities have cracked down on unsuitable titles in recent years. In 2006 government killjoys published a list of undesirable names that weren't in keeping with the religious traditions of the country â€" such as Cantonese moniker Chow Tow â€" which means 'Smelly Head'.

Has Malaysia banned any other names? Lots more Chinese efforts such as Ah Chwar ('Snake'), Khiow Khoo ('Hunchback'), Sor Chai ('Insane'). Malays should also steer clear of Woti, which means 'Sexual Intercourse'.

6) @ (China)

With more than a billion fellow countrymen, finding a unique name in China is difficult. Perhaps that's why one couple called their baby the '@' symbol â€" in Chinese characters it apparently looks a bit like 'love him'. Bless. Unsurprisingly, however, the authorities were less sentimental and publicised the moniker as an example of citizens bringing bizarre names into the Chinese language.

Has China banned any other names? The police have control over all names given to children because they issue identity cards, but details of rejections are not widely circulated.

10 illegal baby names

wanna call me al capone?

This week the Pope declared war on parents naming babies after celebrities, fruit or popular sports cars. In an address to parents, the ever-progressive pontiff pleaded with worshipers to 'give your children names that are in the Christian calendar'. So Apple, Brooklyn and Ferrari are out, Francisco and Giulia are in.

But Benedict's not the only authority figure to stamp down on one of the sillier by-products of celebrity culture. The following names have all been banned around the world for reasons of taste, decency or just plain daftness.

1) Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii (New Zealand)

New Zealand law bans names which could cause offence to a 'reasonable' person. Good thing too - the country is a stupid name hotspot. We found a couple from the islands who tried and failed to call their son '4Real', but nothing beats the ridiculous moniker above. It belonged to a 9-year-old girl before a judge had her renamed during a custody battle. 'It makes a fool of the child,' he said. It certainly made application forms a pain in the butt.

Has New Zealand banned any other names? Oh yes. The judge listed some that were also blocked: Fish and Chips (twins), Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit. Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence were allowed.

2) Venerdi AKA 'Friday' (Italy)

Maybe this is what the Pope was talking about. Back in 2008 a court banned an Italian couple from calling their child Venerdi (translation: Friday). The judges reckoned the name - taken from 'Robinson Crusoe' - would expose the boy to 'mockery' and was associated with 'subservience and insecurity'. The parents, however, might have the last laugh; they threatened to call their next child Mercoledi (Wednesday).

Has Italy banned any other names? Italian courts can step in 'when the child's name is likely to limit social interaction and create insecurity'. In Turin, Andrea was rejected (and changed to Emma) as it's a boy's name in Italy. Dalmata has also been rejected, as it means Dalmatian.

3) Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (Sweden)

No, we didn't fall asleep on the keyboard. That is an actual name a Swedish couple tried to inflict on their son back in 1996. Apparently the name is pronounced 'Albin' (we're not sure how), and the parents chose it as a protest against Sweden's admittedly strict naming laws. Tax authorities must give their blessing to both first and surnames before they can be used.

Has Sweden banned any other names? Oh yes. Some favourites include Metallica, IKEA, Veranda and Q. Google was OK though.

Six Degrees of Impersonation

One of the most famous American con artists was David Hampton, who convinced a number of celebrities, including Melanie Griffith and Calvin Klein, that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier. His assumed identity allowed him entry into exclusive clubs and into the homes and hearts of movie stars. In 1983, Hampton was arrested, convicted of fraud and spent 21 months in prison. The story of David Hampton, who died of AIDS on July 18, 2003, at the age of 39, became the inspiration for the play and film Six Degrees of Separation.

Gold Medal Loser

Nov. 19, 2009: Steven Burton, 29, showed up at his 20 year high school reunion in a Marine dress uniform decorated with medals of the highest military honor, including the Purple Heart and the Navy Cross. Also at the reunion was his classmate Colleen Salonga, an actual Navy commander, who became suspicious of Burton and sent the above photo to military authorities, who discovered that the bank employee had never served in the armed forces at all. He was charged with unauthorized wearing of military medals, a misdemeanor.

July 15, 2009: Posing as a Catholic priest, Paul Schlear of Philadelphia befriended the family of a badly injured police officer, providing them comfort during their difficult time. Schlear, dressed in a Roman Catholic priest's robe, allegedly prayed with the family at the hospital. The phony priest had also participated in the funerals of fallen police officers while wearing religious attire. After an investigation, Schlear was charged with criminal trespassing and false impersonation.

April 19, 2006: Two Lauderdale Lakes, FL., women fell victim to a sexually-motivated scheme in which 76-year-old Philip Winikoff went door-to-door offering free breast exams. According to police, Winikoff, posing as a doctor, was allowed into the victims' homes where, during the course of his "examination" he touched their genitals before fleeing the scene. The bogus breast doc, who actually works as a driver, was charged with several counts of sexual battery and simple assault.

Strange, Butt True

Police in Miami have arrested a transgendered woman who they say posed as a doctor and injected flat tire sealant, cement and oil into a woman's buttocks. Oneal Ron Morris, 30, pictured, was charged on November 18 with practicing medicine without a license and serious bodily injury. According to police, the victim paid Morris $700 in May 2010 for a series of injections that were supposed to give her a fuller figure. Instead, the victim made several trips to the hospital, complaining of severe pain. Initially embarrassed to tell doctors about the procedure she had undergone, the victim eventually came clean and hospital staff alerted authorities. Morris, who was released on bond, reportedly performed the procedure on herself as well.

Cattle manure â€" The elements of cattle manure are similar to those of pig manure, but cattle are ruminants and the food stuffs are repeatedly masticated, making the excrement quite delicate. Cattle manure contains less nitrogen than pig manure (C:N = 25:1). Cattle urine contains more nitrogen than pig urine (in the form of hippuric acid, C6H5 CONHCH2 COOH); therefore, cattle excreta decompose slowly. The average daily excreta is 25 kg/cow, in which the ratio of feces to urine is about 3:2. The total annual amount of excrement for each animal is 9000 kg.

Govt execs give conflicting statements on Arroyo mug shots

PATERNO ESMAQUEL II, GMA News
11/22/2011 | 12:10 PM (Updated 1:10 p.m.)

Whose statements should the public believe on the issue of the authenticity of supposed mug shots of former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that were leaked on the Internet?

Two authorities â€" Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo and Southern Police District (SPD) officer-in-charge Sr. Supt. James Bucayu â€" on Tuesday gave conflicting statements on Arroyo’s supposed mug shots published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on the same day.

Mrs. Arroyo’s supposed mug shots are also now on the homepage of mugshots.com, a self-proclaimed “Google for Mug Shots."

In a text message to GMA News Online, Robredo said the photos in the Inquirer are not the “real" mug shots after having verified this information with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

However, Bucayu, who spoke to the ABS-CBN News Channel, said the supposed mug shots were “leaked."

“Nakita ko na po ‘yung mug shots galing sa Internet. Nagtataka kami sino nag-leak," Bucayu was quoted by the news channel’s official Twitter account, @ANCALERTS, as saying.

In another text message, Robredo said Bucayu “is not authorized" to speak on the matter. He also emphasized, “[The] mug shots have [the] wrong booking number and incomplete [information]. [The] picture [is] not exactly accurate."

The secretary said it is CIDG Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel who was tasked to administer Mrs. Arroyo’s booking, including the taking of mug shots. He is the designated police spokesman on the former Philippine leader's case, Robredo said.

“He denies [the] PDI mug shots are real. [The] PNP will deal with Bucayu," Robredo added.

GMA News Online is still trying to reach Bucayu for comment as of posting time.

The Philippine National Police, which Bucayu belongs to, falls under Robredo’s authority as secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

No sanctions yet

An initial comparison shows that the mug shots in the Inquirer and those submitted to the Pasay Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 bear resemblances, said clerk of court Joel Pelicano in an interview with radio dzBB.

“‘Yung mug shot na sinumite sa husgado at [lumabas sa] Inquirer ay kamukha. Ang kaiba ang sa ibaba ng litrato [na] nakasulat. [Nagkaibang] kaunti," Pelicano said.

Meanwhile, Pelicano added that the court will not immediately sanction the Inquirer and some websites for publishing the former president’s supposed mug shots.

He said the court will wait for Arroyo’s camp to file the appropriate motion before it could decide whether to impose sanctions or not.

“Sa ngayon ang standing ng husgado, huwag i-release at huwag i-publish [ang mug shots]," Pelicano explained.

Political scientist Bobby Tuazon, director of the Center for People Empowerment in Governance, criticized Aquino for backtracking an an election campaign to back a freedom of information bill.

"By backtracking... he is sending a mixed signal of whether he is serious in the fight against corruption," Tuazon said.

On a macro level, Tuazon said the entire political system of patronage, which was entrenched more than 100 years ago during US colonial rule, needed to be addressed if corruption was to be seriously tackled.

Under this system, politicians hand out the spoils of office to their supporters in exchange for their loyalty, or seek bribes in return for contracts or favours, said Tuazon.

"Bribery is an institution," he said.

Tuazon alleged that Arroyo was one of the most blatant offenders, but that it infested all levels of politics.

"Political patronage is usually identified with the president. But if you go down the line, it is also real in congress, provincial governments, local governments, even down to the village level," he said.

Unexplained wealth for politicians is a common theme across the Philippines.

Provincial governors earn just 50,000 pesos ($1,150) a month while city mayors make about 45,000 pesos, according to Mars Buan, a political scientist who advises firms for risk consultancy Pacific Strategies and Assessments.

But she said in many parts of the country, the houses of governors, mayors and other politicians were usually the most luxurious, and would cost much more than their salaries allowed.

"There are hazy ethics, low salaries, the pressure of the system... the need to get back all the money they spent in elections," Buan said in describing Filipino politics.

PH's graft problem wider than Arroyo: analysts

Agence France-Presse
11/21/2011

MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III has hailed the arrest of his predecessor as proof his anti-graft drive is working but analysts say much more needs to be done to end the country's corruption plague.

Gloria Arroyo, who ruled the Philippines from 2001 to last year, was charged on Friday with rigging senatorial elections, and Aquino has vowed to pursue her for a wide range of other corrupt acts she allegedly committed while in power.

"This is the fruit of our reforms to fight corruption. The principle behind these reforms is that the guilty must be made to account," Aquino said over the weekend in his first comments on Arroyo since she was arrested.

Aquino won a landslide election victory last year after campaigning almost exclusively on a platform of ending widespread corruption across all sectors of society, which is one of the main reasons for the country's crushing poverty.

The bachelor president and son of a democracy heroine is widely regarded as being corruption-free and he has used his clean image as one of the key drivers in trying to change the public's tolerance for graft.

Aquino has also vowed to hold even the most powerful people to account, and has made the pursuit of Arroyo one of his administration's top priorities.

Arroyo stood down last year with opinion polls showing her to be the most unpopular president since dictator Ferdinand Marcos of the 1980s, largely because of the belief she was corrupt.

She is alleged to have approved multi-million-dollar government contracts that enriched herself, her family and supporters. Arroyo is also accused of cheating to win the 2004 presidential election. She denies all the charges.

Political analysts say that, while the determination of Aquino and his aides to hold Arroyo to account signals a good intention to fight graft, they have not yet taken the major reforms needed to dig out the roots of corruption.

"Their idea seems to be to get one big fish, but that won't be enough," said political science professor Francisco Magno of the Catholic church-run De La Salle University.

"It has to go beyond the campaign promises, the rhetoric of change."

Magno said one of the government's top priorities should be to strengthen agencies that held officials to account, such as the ombudsman's office, a national anti-graft court and the state prosecutor's office.

"The (watchdog) institutions are weak. They need to be strengthened, put more resources, put in more lawyers and pay them better," he said.

Billy Crystal's Best Oscars Gags of All Time

By Patrick J. Kiger||November 16, 2011

It looked like a Hollywood disaster of The Poseidon Adventure proportions when Eddie Murphy backed out of hosting the 2012 Academy Awards, but then came word that his replacement will be veteran Oscars host Billy Crystal.

The 61-year-old Crystal's return engagement promises a contrast to the 2011 telecast, in which Gen Y movie stars James Franco and Anne Hathaway were a little too self-consciously hip and not quite funny enough, according to the critical consensus. As Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franich opines: "It's almost as if the show has been going through a midlife crisis -- buying a shiny new car, dating people young enough to be its grandchildren -- and now it's admitting that, well, sometimes the safe choice is the best choice."

Regardless of how you feel about Academy voters' choice of nominated films, the musical numbers or the inevitably painfully long recitations of thank yous by Oscar winners, you can rest assured of one thing: Billy Crystal will be funny. He's the Toyota Corolla of comedians -- not the the flashiest, perhaps, but eminently dependable.

The Swiss foundation said the results are based on the initial counting of votes which ended last Nov. 11.

Final results will be announced early next year, but organizers said changes are expected between the provisional winners and the final list.

More than a million votes were cast since the start of the search in 2007 to trim the list of more than 440 contenders down to a shortlist of 77.

The number of contenders was then further cut to the 28 finalists before the final seven provisional winners.

The votes were cast through text messages and the Internet.

Paje likewise clarified that no payment was made by the government to be able to join in the campaign for the New 7 Wonders of Nature.

“It is one of our global successes,” he said.

“We just hope that it won’t be tainted or become a subject of controversy.

“The Almighty wrought this masterpiece of nature, but we thank our people for its election as one of the seven best among the many wonders that nature has scattered all over our planet.”

3rd spot eyed for PPUR in 'Wonders' list

By Rhodina Villanueva (The Philippine Star) November 22, 2011

MANILA, Philippines - Environment Secretary Ramon Paje is confident the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) will not be taken off the list of the New7 Wonders of Nature.

“According to (Puerto Princesa) Mayor (Edward) Hagedorn, the PPUR, if it is not first or second placer, will at least land on the third spot based on the text votes that came in for the country’s world-class natural resource,” he said.

Speaking to reporters, Paje said even if a final declaration will have to be made by the New7 Wonders Foundation early next year, the PPUR will remain among those declared as seven natural wonders of the world.

A computation secured by Edward Hagedorn showed high text votes for the PPUR, he added.

At least 24 million votes were reportedly secured by the PPUR, Paje said.

The PPUR made it as one of the world’s natural wonders based on the provisional results of a global poll to choose the New7 Wonders of Nature.

The other finalists are the Amazon rainforest, Vietnam’s Halong Bay, Argentina’s Iguazu Falls, South Korea’s Jeju Island, Indonesia’s Komodo, and South Africa’s Table Mountain, according to Bernard Weber, founder-president of New7Wonders Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland.

the former fugitive legislator though has shown some kind of magnanimity, as can be gleaned from the following:

Sen. Panfilo Lacson also said Arroyo should be accorded all humanitarian considerations, given her current state of health.

He reiterated his statement over the weekend that Arroyo should be allowed to be under hospital arrest because of her poor health.

“If she’s sick she should be under hospital arrest. If she’s well she should stay in prison,” Lacson said.

Lacson, who came out with various exposés against the former president when she was still in power, also disagreed with calls by some of Arroyo’s critics for the police to release her mugshots to the public.

According to Lacson, that would serve no other purpose than to humiliate the former president.

“Let us give her some dignity. We all know that her mugshots have been taken and she has been fingerprinted, that should be enough,” Lacson said.

this is truly tragic; to be brought low after years of power... not that i'm a fan of this former president either, but we tend to sympathize with leaders whose tragic fall can only be blamed on hubris.  (i was equally sad over the tragic demise of gaddafi and michael jackson, honest.)

unfortunately, gma "released" (or gave authority to release) the mug shots of erap too, he who she filed a case of plunder against and eventually bestowed a presidential pardon.  it is common knowledge that the former first couple were cruel as they hounded those who crossed them; one doesn't even have to mix in the infamous "hello, garci".  oh, well, as they say, what goes around, comes around.

i can't help but think of the what-ifs, though.  what if she simply chose to fade away and come out later as a dignified elder statesman instead of becoming a legislator?  did she see the cases coming and thought, wrongly, that being a legislator can give her some kind of protection?

meantime, i can't help but wonder what the current administration plans to do with former fugitive senator lacson, an administration partymate.  will he be made to answer why, as a legislator, he defied arrest by disappearing from the country until the change of administration?  quo vadis, pinoy?

He was seen on the bank's surveillance video waiting around for 4 minutes for police and even asking a witness if they had called the cops. When he was brought before a judge Miller confessed that his wife so abused him that he wanted to go to jail just to get away from her. According to Lancaster Online, the arresting officer said that after spending 20 minutes with Miller's wife, "I was ready for jail, too."

4.  Gliese 581g

The good news: This venue's got some serious capacity. About three times the size of Earth, Gliese 581 can host any kind of party. And once we're there, we can keep partying and overpopulating for many more generations.

The bad news? The planet is locked to its star, meaning one side of it is forever plunged in darkness. That's where the evil alien vampires live.

Of Jupiter's myriad moons, the most likely venue for Earthlings is probably Europa. We still don't know much about the place, but we do know it's got some kind of atmosphere -- and there's a good chance there's oxygen in it.

What's more, it's looking increasingly likely that there's water - at least in frozen form. Oxygen and water - two good starts for any discussion on hosting humans.

Trouble is, we still don't know enough about the place to justify sending the fleet out. It took the New Horizons spacecraft 13 months to get to Jupiter. That's a lot of 'Are we there yets' from the human race grumbling from the back of the space camper.

There's a good chance the long-suffering pilot will hit the JETTISON CARGO button long before we get there.

You know if it was that easy, there would be a Disneyland on the moon by now. But, despite its proximity, the Earth's moon just doesn't have much going for it as a potential colony.

Never mind the lack of any kind of atmosphere. The moon just isn't nearly big enough. Its surface area is about equal to Canada, Russia and the U.S. combined.

Even if we did manage to build enough 10-billion-storey condos, it's hard to imagine we'd be very happy on our little rock, staring up at our blue-white-and-dreamy old address.

Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA (born 8 January 1942) is an English theoretical physicist and cosmologist whose scientific books and public appearances have made him an academic celebrity.

"Perimeter is a grand experiment in theoretical physics and the institute's twin focus, on quantum theory and gravity, is very close to my heart and central to explaining the origin of the universe," said Hawking, also director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge University.

"I am hoping, and expecting, great things will happen there. And I hope to visit again soon."

In September, the institute expanded with a new wing called the Stephen Hawking Centre but the cosmologist was unable to attend in person and sent his regards by video.

Marvels featured in his new TV series include a computer in Switzerland that is powered by the brain, a driverless car that is smart enough to navigate the crooked streets of San Francisco and a baby-like robot in Italy that learns like a child.

Later episodes investigate the way brain disorders could be treated using laser light and genetically modified brain cells, how mobile phones can give experts access to our every habit and action and lasers that print objects in 3D.

"I have so much I want to do," Hawking says of his boundless curiosity about the world. "There are so many questions still to answer."

"Brave New World With Stephen Hawking" debuts Saturday on Discovery World HD.

Hawking said this is why he favours manned â€" or as he puts it, "personed" â€" space flight and encourages further study into how to make space colonization possible.

Hawking's five-part TV series touches on that theme, while putting the spotlight on scientific breakthroughs that promise to transform the 21st century. He introduces each episode while a team of experts travel the globe to delve deeper into various innovations.

The experts themselves represent a wide range of disciplines â€" they include naturalist Sir David Attenborough, author and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, biologist and broadcaster Aarathi Prasad, and Canadian astronaut and neurologist Roberta Bondar.

More Canadian content comes by way of a segment set at the SNOLAB in Sudbury, Ont., an underground science lab specializing in neutrino and dark matter physics.

By email, Hawking says he's excited by work underway at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ont., which he visited in June 2010 and was named its first distinguished research chair.

Stephen Hawking: Space Exploration Crucial To Human Survival

11/18/11 09:03 PM ET
The Canadian Press

TORONTO - Stephen Hawking says the colonization of outer space is key to the survival of humankind, predicting it will be difficult for the world's inhabitants "to avoid disaster in the next hundred years."

The renowned astrophysicist explores some of the most remarkable advancements in technology and health with the new U.K.-Canadian series "Brave New World With Stephen Hawking," debuting Saturday on Discovery World HD.

Before its premiere, he discussed the earth's most pressing concerns in an email interview with The Canadian Press from Cambridge, England, declaring space exploration to be humankind's most urgent mission.

"We are entering an increasingly dangerous period of our history," said Hawking, who has Lou Gehrig's disease, leaving him almost completely paralyzed and unable to speak.

"Our population and our use of the finite resources of planet Earth are growing exponentially, along with our technical ability to change the environment for good or ill. But our genetic code still carries the selfish and aggressive instincts that were of survival advantage in the past. It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million.

"Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain lurking on planet Earth, but to spread out into space."

Incest is a sin, infidelity is not. Neither is not participating in the raising of your children as long as you regularly give them money, like 1 million pesos a month.

They also learn that the Catholic Church will readily look the other way just as long as the Senator opposes the Reproductive Health (RH) bill. In fact, he may well be the poster boy for the biblical instruction “Go forth and multiply” most favored by the celibate bishops.

In her column, Yoly Villanueva-Ong wrote that “it is hard enough to raise good children with a complete set of parents. But without a watchful mother and father, what are the odds that mass-produced kids will ever reach their full potential? Patriarchs who use their descendants like trophies that attest to their manhood better rethink their legacy while they still can…Nothing makes up for the missing guidance that parenting requires.”

“Children who grow up untended like mushrooms are likely to repeat the cycle of broken and dysfunctional family life,” she warned. Some of these untended mushrooms may even commit grisly crimes.

Next week marks the second anniversary of the Ampatuan Massacre which was perpetrated by the clan of Gov. Datu Andal Ampatuan Sr, who officially has four wives and over 30 children.  Two of his sons, Andal, Jr. and Datu Unsay, are charged with presiding over the brutal killing and rape of over 56 people including 31 members of the Philippine media, on November 22, 2009.

The latest crime involving “mass-produced” children was the October 28 killing of Ramgen Bautista, also known as Ram Revilla, reportedly upon the orders of his own younger brother, RJ, and sister, Mara (who fled to Turkey). They are three of the 81 children of former Sen. Ramon Revilla, Sr., who regularly invites all of his children to his annual birthday party to make certain that they all know each other to prevent a romantic relationship among them that, he fears, may produce idiots.

What moral values are imparted to the 81 children attending his birthday party?

San Francisco neighborhood activist and cable TV host Myrna Lim, who almost became the first Fil-Am to be elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors when she narrowly lost to Gerardo Sandoval in 2004, is well aware of this dark side when she recently talked about the murder of her older sister, Mila, in 1980.

Myrna recounts that while her sister was at the box office collecting money at the Granada movie theater which was showing Dolphy movies, thieves barged in and held up the moviegoers. “As they were leaving”, Myrna said, “they shot my sister Mila who was just standing by the concessions”.

San Francisco’s famed detective team of Earl Sanders (later S.F. police chief) and Napoleon Hendrix captured the two Filipino killers who confessed that the robbery was a ruse whose main purpose was to kill Mila Lim because of her alleged involvement in a lesbian relationship with Sally Quizon, a daughter of Dolphy. The killers pointed to Freddy Quizon, Sally’s older brother, as the man who hired them to kill Mila Lim and who participated in the robbery. Before an arrest warrant could be issued for him, Freddy Quizon fled to the Philippines.

Another of Dolphy’s sons, Dolphy, Jr. was convicted of arson in a fire which claimed the lives of six persons, including the children of former actress Mina Aragon. Dolphy, Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment but was later pardoned by former President Joseph Estrada, Dolphy’s close friend.

Damaged culture breeds idiots

Barely 10 days before the May 2010 Philippine presidential elections, vice-presidential candidate Jojo Binay found himself  9 points behind in the polls to front-runner Mar Roxas when photos of him cavorting in Australia with his alleged mistress surfaced in the Internet. Binay readily admitted the extramarital affair to the press claiming that he was “just a human being capable of committing mistakes”. Binay went on to win the vice-presidency.

Having an extramarital affair can prove politically fatal in the United States as former U.S. Sen. John Edwards learned after the National Enquirer exposed his dalliance with filmmaker Rielle Hunter, with whom he fathered a child. Edwards was forced to withdraw from the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

In the damaged culture universe of the Philippines, however, such indiscretions are considered normal. Despite widespread public knowledge of his philandering ways, former Pres. Joseph “Erap” Estrada still placed second to Noynoy Aquino in the 2010 presidential elections. His official Wikipedia biography even lists his children with Dr. Luisa “Loi” Pimentel, Guia Gomez, Laarni Enriquez, and Joy Rowena.

Erap is far from being unique in show business. In her Philippine Star column this past week (“Cuckoo Clans”), Yoly Villanueva-Ong wrote that Dolphy (Rodolfo V. Quizon), the King of Comedy, has 18 children with six different women. Dolphy’s autobiography confirms that he has 6 children with Engracia Dominguez; 4 with Gloria Smith; 4 with Pamela Ponti; 1 with Evangeline Tugalao; and 1 with Alma Moreno.

But there is a dark side to having “mass-produced” children with multiple partners.

As Villanueva-Ong wrote, “nobody thought it was funny when one of (Dolphy’s children) burned down the home of a showbiz mogul, setting ablaze the wife and children. Another son was in drug rehab, a younger one was involved in an accident that got his girlfriend killed. Recently, a grandson was charged with attempted murder.”

Boyfriend:  Hon, ako ba talaga ang unang boyfriend mo?

Girlfriend:  Oo, naman, love.  Bakit mo natanong?

Boyfriend:  E, di ka na virgin, eh.

Girlfriend:  Love, ikaw talaga ang unang boyfriend ko-- yung iba, mga customers ko lang!
