this is truly tragic; to be brought low after years of power... not that i'm a fan of this former president either, but we tend to sympathize with leaders whose tragic fall can only be blamed on hubris.  (i was equally sad over the tragic demise of gaddafi and michael jackson, honest.)

unfortunately, gma "released" (or gave authority to release) the mug shots of erap too, he who she filed a case of plunder against and eventually bestowed a presidential pardon.  it is common knowledge that the former first couple were cruel as they hounded those who crossed them; one doesn't even have to mix in the infamous "hello, garci".  oh, well, as they say, what goes around, comes around.

i can't help but think of the what-ifs, though.  what if she simply chose to fade away and come out later as a dignified elder statesman instead of becoming a legislator?  did she see the cases coming and thought, wrongly, that being a legislator can give her some kind of protection?

meantime, i can't help but wonder what the current administration plans to do with former fugitive senator lacson, an administration partymate.  will he be made to answer why, as a legislator, he defied arrest by disappearing from the country until the change of administration?  quo vadis, pinoy?

the former fugitive legislator though has shown some kind of magnanimity, as can be gleaned from the following:

Sen. Panfilo Lacson also said Arroyo should be accorded all humanitarian considerations, given her current state of health.

He reiterated his statement over the weekend that Arroyo should be allowed to be under hospital arrest because of her poor health.

“If she’s sick she should be under hospital arrest. If she’s well she should stay in prison,” Lacson said.

Lacson, who came out with various exposés against the former president when she was still in power, also disagreed with calls by some of Arroyo’s critics for the police to release her mugshots to the public.

According to Lacson, that would serve no other purpose than to humiliate the former president.

“Let us give her some dignity. We all know that her mugshots have been taken and she has been fingerprinted, that should be enough,” Lacson said.

Govt execs give conflicting statements on Arroyo mug shots

PATERNO ESMAQUEL II, GMA News
11/22/2011 | 12:10 PM (Updated 1:10 p.m.)

Whose statements should the public believe on the issue of the authenticity of supposed mug shots of former President and incumbent Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that were leaked on the Internet?

Two authorities – Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo and Southern Police District (SPD) officer-in-charge Sr. Supt. James Bucayu – on Tuesday gave conflicting statements on Arroyo’s supposed mug shots published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on the same day.

Mrs. Arroyo’s supposed mug shots are also now on the homepage of mugshots.com, a self-proclaimed “Google for Mug Shots."

In a text message to GMA News Online, Robredo said the photos in the Inquirer are not the “real" mug shots after having verified this information with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

However, Bucayu, who spoke to the ABS-CBN News Channel, said the supposed mug shots were “leaked."

“Nakita ko na po ‘yung mug shots galing sa Internet. Nagtataka kami sino nag-leak," Bucayu was quoted by the news channel’s official Twitter account, @ANCALERTS, as saying.

In another text message, Robredo said Bucayu “is not authorized" to speak on the matter. He also emphasized, “[The] mug shots have [the] wrong booking number and incomplete [information]. [The] picture [is] not exactly accurate."

The secretary said it is CIDG Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel who was tasked to administer Mrs. Arroyo’s booking, including the taking of mug shots. He is the designated police spokesman on the former Philippine leader's case, Robredo said.

“He denies [the] PDI mug shots are real. [The] PNP will deal with Bucayu," Robredo added.

GMA News Online is still trying to reach Bucayu for comment as of posting time.

The Philippine National Police, which Bucayu belongs to, falls under Robredo’s authority as secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

No sanctions yet

An initial comparison shows that the mug shots in the Inquirer and those submitted to the Pasay Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 bear resemblances, said clerk of court Joel Pelicano in an interview with radio dzBB.

“‘Yung mug shot na sinumite sa husgado at [lumabas sa] Inquirer ay kamukha. Ang kaiba ang sa ibaba ng litrato [na] nakasulat. [Nagkaibang] kaunti," Pelicano said.

Meanwhile, Pelicano added that the court will not immediately sanction the Inquirer and some websites for publishing the former president’s supposed mug shots.

He said the court will wait for Arroyo’s camp to file the appropriate motion before it could decide whether to impose sanctions or not.

“Sa ngayon ang standing ng husgado, huwag i-release at huwag i-publish [ang mug shots]," Pelicano explained.

the mug is real, but whether she's holding it or not has to be decided by the court. ;D
