2. Miss Pregnant

Just because your belly is expanding doesn't mean you can't enter a beauty contest. No more hiding behind tent-like dresses for pregnant women of the twenty-first century, Ms. Pregnant celebrates beauty with a bump. And yes, they parade in bikinis!

1. Miss Landmine

The millions of landmines planted in Angola during the bloody civil war inspired a competition for injured women. Created by Norwegian artist Morten Traavik, Miss Landmine celebrates pride and empowerment over physical perfection. In this beauty contest 10 women competed for the title of most beautiful mutilated Angolan woman. The first prize? A leg prosthesis.

4. Miss Artificial Beauty

After a Chinese girl was banned from a beauty competition for having some surgery work done, a group of people decide to create a very unusual contest in 2004, with one requirement only: they must have a plastic surgery. The contestants competed for the title of Miss Artificial Beauty, with finalists ranging in age from 18 to 62. All competitors --including one transsexual-- had to provide a doctor's certificate to prove they’d been under the knife. It was a one-time-only event.

3. Miss Klingon Empire

The Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant, held every year at the Star Trek Convention at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, aims to discover beauties who are out of this world. The pageant's definition of beauty might seem weird to most of us - these ladies get glammed up to assume the persona of any female Klingon character, official or created, from "Star Trek." The pageant features the most beautiful women the Klingon Empire has to offer, to be judged in Beauty, Talent and Personality categories.

6. Miss Jumbo Queen

Thailand hosts the Miss Jumbo Queen pageant for big beautiful women. This wobbly annual event is staged at the Samphran Elephant Ground near Bangkok, as part of the Jumbo Banquet elephant feast. The contest is held to select the contestant who best exhibits the characteristics of an elephant by virtue of her grace, elegance and size, and the winner will lead a jumbo banquet and help promote elephant conservation causes in Thailand.

5. Miss Navajo Nation

Obviously, the contestants of Miss Navajo Nation are members of the Native American Navajo Nation, but the interesting part is the Tribal Skills area, where the contestants demonstrate their skill in essential tribal skills such as butchering sheep. The contestants must butcher a sheep and are judged on their neatness and efficiency. They do it wearing pageant-wear (dresses or tribal garb), with butcher’s smocks over the top.

8. Miss Russian Army

What could the Russian Army do to get good publicity and to recruit more men? The Russian Defense Ministry decided to throw a beauty contest. So in June 2005, nineteen female soldiers and sailors participated in the competition (entitled Beauties in Shoulder Straps), which was broadcast on live television. The event included the soldiers walking down the catwalk in uniform and singing songs while accompanied by guitarists (a memorable lyric included the phrases, "Since we're soldiers, our first concern is automatic weapons; boys come second"). Other events, shown on film, saw the contestants competing in drills, crawling in combat uniform, entering tanks, and running with automatic weapons. The jury ultimately gave the title to Lieutenant Ksenya Agarkova, an engineer with Russia's Northern Fleet. Unfortunately, bikinis were not allowed.

7. Ms Senior Sweetheart

Ms Senior Sweetheart is a national pageant for lovely ladies over age 58 and is held every year in Fall River, Massachusetts. Intended to show the public that senior ladies still have lots of pep in their step, contestants compete in talent, interviews, and an evening gown presentation. The pageant was started in 1978 as a Lions’ Club fund raiser and has been a national competition ever since.

9. Miss Exotic World

The Miss Exotic World Pageant is an annual burlesque pageant and convention held in Las Vegas, and is the annual showcase event (and fundraiser for) the Burlesque Hall of Fame. The pageant attracts former burlesque queens from past decades, as well as current participants of the neo-burlesque scene. The pageant consists of burlesque performances spanning a weekend, culminating with the competition to crown a single performer as Miss Exotic World. Because of the significance of the Exotic World Burlesque Museum to the burlesque community, winning the pageant is considered a top honor for a burlesque performer.

Pekingese becomes America's top dog at Westminster

Associated Press
Wed, Feb 15, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) â€" The Peke was pooped.

Malachy the Pekingese was totally worn out Wednesday, a day after he wobbled off with best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club.

The bitty 4-year-old with the smushed-in face, flowing fur and slower-than-slow walk kept falling asleep during a visit to Sardi's restaurant in the Theater District. He also passed up the traditional day-after steak lunch after eating his regular meal of chicken and rice.

"He's tired, you poor boy," co-owner and handler David Fitzpatrick cooed. "You're going to pass out."

Malachy did, in fact. Several times, actually, while resting on a vinyl cool pack on a table alongside his championship ribbon and shiny silver bowl.

He snores, by the way.

The eyes that were so sparkly at Madison Square Garden during America's biggest dog show on Tuesday night had a hard time staying open, even when prompted by Fitzpatrick and fashion designer Michael Kors.

Malachy can afford to rest. He's already had grand-pups and is now retired after taking 115 best in show titles overall.

"He's won enough," Fitzpatrick said.

The 11-pound pooch will head home to East Berlin, Pa., to be a house pet. He also likes to stretch his tiny legs outdoors.

"Chases rabbits," Fitzpatrick said. "Tries."

Also, he said, in Malachy's future: "Have time for the ladies."

No need for a haircut to look his best. A Peke's hair naturally grows to its long length and doesn't require any trimming, just a lot of grooming.

Malachy beat out an impressive lineup of a Dalmatian, German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, Irish setter, Kerry blue terrier and wire-haired dachshund to become the nation's No. 1 pooch.

While the Garden crowd cheered louder and louder with every little step Malachy took on the green carpet, not everyone agreed with judge Cindy Vogels' choice.

The web immediately lit up with comments lampooning this Peke and the breed in general, with CNBC's Darren Rovell tweeting, "The Westminster Dog show winner the Pekingese is closer to a cat."

CNBC, incidentally, shared the television coverage on the opening night of the two-day show.

Fitzpatrick said there was a late-night party after the win. And by the time Malachy woke up early for the usual next-day tour of the town, he was already tuckered out.

Malachy made the rounds at the morning talk shows, then a visit to the top of the Empire State Building was canceled because of inclement weather. By the time he got to Sardi's shortly before 1 p.m., it had been a long day.

Fitzpatrick said Malachy was petted by about a thousand people during his trek through the city.

"I think he does know something's up," he said, telling Malachy "you're a celebrity now."

‘Rich kids’ gang up on traffic aide who spoiled drag race

By Nathaniel R. Melican
Philippine Daily Inquirer
10:42 pm | Saturday, February 18th, 2012

About 30 “drag racers” ganged up on a traffic enforcer who tried to break up their dangerous, often alcohol-fueled sport in Pasay City on the wee hours of Saturday, according to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

The incident prompted MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino to warn of a tougher crackdown and revive an earlier, controversial proposal to arm the agency’s traffic aides.

Tolentino yesterday said one of his men, Raul Reoteres, suffered head wounds and bruises after taking a beating from the racers and their peers, whom the official described to be young males apparently belonging to “rich families.”

The mauling took place at around 2 a.m. on Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard, a known favorite of drag racers since it usually has little or zero vehicular traffic in the early morning hours. The MMDA imposes a 60-kph limit on the highway.

“Initial investigation showed that the racers who mauled our enforcer were from rich families. They were mad that they were being asked to stop the race,” Tolentino told the Inquirer yesterday.

“It so happened that this was a large group, about 30 of them, who eventually mauled the enforcer. Apparently drunk, they immediately fled after the incident but we have witnesses who saw what happened and can identify those involved,” he added.

“We will return there in full force [today] and in the coming weeks. So if they decide to return there, too, they better be prepared,” he said. “We will never stop until we have fully eradicated drag racing on Macapagal.”

Other MMDA enforcers patrolling the area rushed Reoteres to San Juan de Dios Hospital. He was discharged late yesterday.

The MMDA said it would review footage from security cameras along the highway to determine the plate numbers of the vehicles involved in the race which Reoteres tried to stop.

“We want at least our traffic officials to carry guns. In the meantime, we will strengthen our patrols by requiring our

enforcers to make their rounds in tandems,” Tolentino said.

The MMDA chair said he will also ask the Pasay City government to ban the sale of alcoholic drinks at the gasoline stations along the highway.

“We were told that, before the races, the drivers and other participants usually have a drink first at the gasoline stations,” he said.

Tolentino also said his agency had also received word that the races also attract some wealthy businessmen who go the area to place bets.

Over the weekend, the President said he was not going to be silent about the issue and that he would continue to voice out his thoughts on Corona “if needed” after senator-judges called on the two leaders to stop the word war and just allow the impeachment trial to run its course.

The President also stated that his verbal attacks were not directed at Corona but at the system which the latter was representing.

Over the last few days as the impeachment trial still tackled Article 2 of the impeachment complaint, which included exposing the impeached Chief Justice’s dollar accounts, both Mr. Aquino and Corona had been using public speeches as venues to attack each other.

Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz said Mr. Aquino may have all the right to voice out his opinions but his position as the highest leader of the country do not permit him to do so.

“He can really speak his mind if he was like us common Tom, Dick and Harry but he is not since he is the President,” Cruz told reporters.  “Proper decorum and propriety dictates that he should exhibit some sort of statesmanship and prudence,” said Cruz.

The mere fact that Corona’s impeachment trial was already taking place, Mr. Aquino’s verbal attacks on the chief justice was already “out of place,” he added.

Bishops urge Aquino, Corona to behave

By Jocelyn R. Uy
Philippine Daily Inquirer
3:57 pm | Monday, February 20th, 2012

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"With the word war between the two highest leaders of the country far from being over, some Catholic bishops on Monday joined calls for President Aquino and Chief Justice Renato Corona to observe proper decorum and exercise some prudence in their words and actions towards each other.

“We advise them to be more discreet in what they say [and] to be more prudent in what they tell the people,” according to Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso over the Church-run Radio Veritas.

Concerned over the nonstop fighting between the President and the Chief Justice, who is facing an impeachment trial, the prelate on Monday said they must respect each other’s dignity and show some level of maturity since they were leaders being looked up to by the people.

“[They should be] more mature in relating with one another since they are leaders … they are talking as persons with dignity and education,” said Medroso.  “Every word that they say will always have the influence on the people,” he added.

In a phone interview with reporters, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said he hoped that Mr. Aquino and Corona would be reminded that they should be setting a good example to the public.

“We hope they realize that they are public servants and they always have the public’s good in mind and heart [and] we appeal that … they put aside their personal issues because it’s bad for the country,” said Iñiguez, also chair of the Catholic bishops’ Public Affairs Committee.

Wanting to Believe

David Mikkelson of Snopes.com said such hoaxes succeed when they seem to confirm something people are already inclined to believe, such as a prejudice, political viewpoint, or religious belief.

A hoax also needs to be presented "in a framework that has the appearance of credibility," he said in an email.

The "ancient giant" has both elements, according to Mikkelson.

"It appeals to both a religious and a secular vision of the world as different and more fantastic than mere science would lead us to believe," he said.

"Proof," Mikkelson added, "comes in the form of a fairly convincing image."

For anyone who may have knowingly propagated the myth, Mikkelson added, the motivation "probably wasn't any different than the motivation for engaging in a game of ringing someone's doorbell and running awayâ€"because it's an easy way to have a laugh at someone else's expense."

Alex Boese, "curator" of the virtual Museum of Hoaxes, said fake giants have a long history going back to the at least the 1700s.

The recent hoax is reminiscent of the once famous Cardiff Giant myth, involving a ten-foot-tall (three-meter) stone figure dug up in 1869 in Cardiff, New York, Boese said.

Many people believed the figure was a petrified man and claimed he was one of the giants mentioned in the Bible's Book of Genesis: "There were giants in the Earth in those days."

Likewise, Boese said, the recent giant hoax "taps into people's desire for mystery and their desire to see concrete confirmation of religious legends."

How the Image Was Made

IronKite started with an aerial photo of a mastodon excavation in Hyde Park, New York, in 2000. He then digitally superimposed a human skeleton over the beast's remains.

The later addition of a digging man presented the biggest technical challenge.

"If you look, he's holding a yellow-handled shovel, but there's nothing on the end," IronKite said.

"Originally, the spade end was there. But [it] looked like it was occupying the exact same space as the skeleton's temple, making the whole thing look fake.

"Now it looks like he's just holding a stick, and people don't notice. It's funny."

IronKite also altered the color of the man's clothing to create a "uniform tie-in" with the white-shirted observer peering down from the wooden platform.

The two figures work to exaggerate the scale of the skeleton, he added.

IronKite said he's tickled that the pictureâ€"which took only about an hour and a half to createâ€"has generated so much Internet attention.

"I laugh myself silly when some guy claims to know someone who was there, or even goes so far as to claim that he or she was there when they found the skeleton and took the picture," IronKite said.

"Sometimes people seem so desperate to believe in something that they lie to themselves, or exaggerate in order to make their own argument stronger."

Arabian Giant

Variations of the giant photo hoax include alleged discovery of a 60- to 80-foot long (18- to 24-meter) human skeleton in Saudi Arabia. In one popular take, which likewise first surfaced in 2004, an oil-exploration team is said to have made the find.

Here the skeleton is held up as evidence of giants mentioned in Islamic, rather than Hindu, scriptures.

The Debunkers

Web sites dedicated to debunking urban legends and "netlore" picked up on the various giant hoaxes soon after they first appeared.

California-based Snopes.com, for example, noted that the skeleton image had been lifted from Worth1000, which hosts photo-manipulation competitions.

Titled "Giants," the skeleton-and-shoveler picture had won third place in a 2002 contest called "Archaeological Anomalies 2."

The image's creatorâ€"an illustrator from Canada who goes by the screen name IronKiteâ€"told National Geographic News via email that he had had nothing to do with the subsequent hoax.

He added that he wants to remain anonymous because some forums that debated whether the giant was genuine or not "were turning their entire argument into a religious one." It was argued, for instance, that the Saudi Arabian find was entirely consistent with the teachings of the Koran.

"This was about the same time that death threats and cash bounties were being issued against cartoonists and other industry professionals for doing things like depicting the Prophet Mohammed," IronKite wrote.

The account added that the team also found tablets with inscriptions that suggest the giant belonged to a race of superhumans that are mentioned in the Mahabharata, a Hindu epic poem from about 200 B.C.

"They were very tall, big and very powerful, such that they could put their arms around a tree trunk and uproot it," the report said, repeating claims that initially appeared in 2004.

Voice editor P. Deivamuthu admitted to National Geographic News that his publication was taken in by the fake reports.

The monthly, which is based in Mumbai (Bombay), published a retraction after readers alerted Deivamuthu to the hoax, he said.

"We are against spreading lies and canards," Deivamuthu added. "Moreover, our readers are a highly intellectual class and will not brook any nonsense."

Other blog entriesâ€"such as a May 2007 posting on a site called Srini's Weblogâ€"cite a report supposedly published in the Times of India on April 22, 2004. But a search of that newspaper's archive revealed no such article.

"Skeleton of Giant" Is Internet Photo Hoax

James Owen
for National Geographic News
December 14, 2007

The National Geographic Society has not discovered ancient giant humans, despite rampant reports and pictures.

The hoax began with a doctored photo and later found a receptive online audienceâ€"thanks perhaps to the image's unintended religious connotations.

The photo fakery might be obvious to most people. But the tall tale refuses to lie down even five years later, if a continuing flow of emails to National Geographic News are any indication. (The National Geographic Society owns National Geographic News.)

The messages come from around the globeâ€"Portugal, India, El Salvador, Malaysia, Africa, the Dominican Republic, Greece, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya. But they all ask the same question: Is it true?

Perpetuating the Myth

Helping to fuel the story's recent resurgence are a smattering of media outlets that have reported the find as fact.

An often cited March 2007 article in India's Hindu Voice monthly, for example, claimed that a National Geographic Society team, in collaboration with the Indian Army, had dug up a giant human skeleton in India.

"Recent exploration activity in the northern region of India uncovered a skeletal remains of a human of phenomenal size," the report read.

The story went on to say the discovery was made by a "National Geographic Team (India Division) with support from the Indian Army since the area comes under jurisdiction of the Army."

Hmm, "the lines balanced in strict syllabic measure by a caesura"? Bwahaha, measure by a caesura? Man, you've been eating too much grass...

:P

lisod tuod sabton, bisag moablig dictionary or google search...

from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/:

cae·su·ra also ce·su·ra  (s-zhr, -zr)

n. pl. cae·su·ras also ce·su·ras or cae·su·rae also ce·su·rae (-zhr, -zr)

1. A pause in a line of verse dictated by sense or natural speech rhythm rather than by metrics.

2. A pause or interruption, as in conversation: After another weighty caesura the senator resumed speaking.

3. In Latin and Greek prosody, a break in a line caused by the ending of a word within a foot, especially when this coincides with a sense division.

4. Music A pause or breathing at a point of rhythmic division in a melody.

well, maybe the news writer (or the quoted merle alunan) meant that a caesura can be used as a measurement of balance?  samot kalibog akong kutaw...

What Is Faith?

Faith is sunlight in the rain
A lowly worm with a gift of grace
Faith is letting go a sad refrain
And taking in a song of praise

Faith is the planter who plants
Knowing well the vagaries of weather
Faith is the chanter who chants
With a voice that floats like a feather

There the scarecrow does its task
With its jacket all a-tatter
Faith is knowing how to ask
Of the scarecrow what's the matter

A pause in earthly changes
The serenity after the storm
Faith is seeing beyond the mountain ranges
A butterfly after the worm

Faith is knowing how to cry
Faith is the scarecrow feeling pain
Faith is seeing a butterfly
Of sunlight in the rain.

kindly post your composition and performance here at tb in the near future, if it's not asking too much.  :)
