A cat that went missing in Colorado five years ago was found wandering in Manhattan, and will soon be sent on a plane to reunite it with its former owners, an animal pound spokesman said.

Workers at the pet shelter traced Willow the cat back to a family in Colorado, thanks to a microchip embedded in the animal's neck that they checked with a scanner, said Richard Gentles, spokesman for Animal Care & Control of New York City.

A concerned citizen found the brown, black and white cat prowling the streets in east Manhattan, and the animal was taken to the shelter.

Animal care workers do not know who was taking care of the cat, but Gentles said one thing is certain â€“ the pet did not travel halfway across the country on its own.

"The cat was in very good condition, clean, a little chunky," Gentles said. "So obviously someone was taking care of her."

Willow belongs to a Colorado family called the Squires, and the animal apparently ran away five years ago during a home renovation project, Gentles said.

Animal Care plans to soon fly the cat back to the Squires, after the animal passes a required screening test for communicable disease and to make sure it is healthy enough to travel, Gentles said.

A highly trained Australian special forces combatant who disappeared during a firefight in Afghanistan has been found safe, well and waggy-tailed after surviving for more than a year in the desert.

Sabi, an expert in detecting improvised explosive devices who also happens to be a four-year-old black labrador, went missing 14 months ago during a battle in which nine Australian soldiers, including her handler, were wounded. Months of searching revealed nothing and the dog, on her second tour of Afghanistan, was officially listed as missing in action.

Last week, however, a US serviceman known only as John spotted Sabi wandering in a remote area of the southern province of Oruzgan and, knowing his Australian counterparts had lost a bomb-sniffing dog, tried out some commands to which, Lassie-style, the labrador responded.

Back at Tarin Kowt base, Sabi was a little grizzled but otherwise unharmed. Her trainer checked she really was Sabi by means of the tennis ball test: he nudged a ball to her; she picked it up. "It's amazing, just incredible, to have her back," the trainer said.

Australia's prime minister, Kevin Rudd, who was coincidentally visiting his country's troops during a brief visit to Afghanistan, posed for photographs petting the dog, alongside US General Stanley McChrystal, overall commander of the US and Nato missions to Afghanistan. Rudd declared Sabi "a genuinely nice pooch".

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Sabi showed no signs of stress after her ordeal and greeted strangers "with a sniff and a lick".

It is not known whether the dog spent the past 14 months eluding Taliban forces in the area, as befits a special forces combatant, or whether she was captured and held as a prisoner of war, but the fact that she was in good condition when found suggested she had been well looked after, military spokesman Brigadier Brian Dawson, told reporters in Canberra.

She is now being tested for disease, with a view to returning to Australia, although Rudd suggested that passing quarantine tests "might be the greatest challenge".

Trooper Mark Donaldson was awarded a Victoria Cross for his part in the battle in which Sabi disappeared in September 2008, when a joint Australian-Afghan patrol was ambushed. He declared her return "the last piece of the puzzle.

"Having Sabi back gives some closure for the handler and the rest of us [who] served with her in 2008. It's a fantastic morale booster for the guys," he said.

10 Reasons Why You Should Adopt an Older Cat

1. Older cats are harder to find homes for than kittens and are therefore vulnerable to premature euthanasia at government funded shelters.

2. For an older couple or person - adult or geriatric cats make better companions because they are more mellow, laid back and less likely to be causing chaos around the house.

6. Obviously older cats will already be litter trained, likely spayed/neutered and have had their full shots so vet bills will be minimal unless youâ€™re a real hero and adopt a cat with medical issues.

7. If you already have an older cat, adopting a kitten would be too stressful for them. I have often thought that getting a kitten would help keep my older cats younger (and thinner) but always on further thought, I couldnâ€™t bring myself to do it because of the stress that it would cause them. They donâ€™t have the patience anymore for babies and in Jazzâ€™s case, I think she might actually eat kitties for breakfast.

Simply because they deserve it and you may be their last chance at having a loving, secure home. Older cats donâ€™t end up in shelters because they are bad cats. Itâ€™s usually because either their former owners have passed away or entered nursing homes, moved into homes that donâ€™t allow pets or have been abandoned when their former family split up. Sitting in shelters waiting for someone special to come along to take them home while watching all the kittens get adopted first has to be the loneliest feeling I can imagine for an adult cat.

NEW YORK (AP) â€” The Peke was pooped.

Malachy the Pekingese was totally worn out Wednesday, a day after he wobbled off with best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club.

The bitty 4-year-old with the smushed-in face, flowing fur and slower-than-slow walk kept falling asleep during a visit to Sardi's restaurant in the Theater District. He also passed up the traditional day-after steak lunch after eating his regular meal of chicken and rice.

"He's tired, you poor boy," co-owner and handler David Fitzpatrick cooed. "You're going to pass out."

Malachy did, in fact. Several times, actually, while resting on a vinyl cool pack on a table alongside his championship ribbon and shiny silver bowl.

He snores, by the way.

The eyes that were so sparkly at Madison Square Garden during America's biggest dog show on Tuesday night had a hard time staying open, even when prompted by Fitzpatrick and fashion designer Michael Kors.

Malachy can afford to rest. He's already had grand-pups and is now retired after taking 115 best in show titles overall.

"He's won enough," Fitzpatrick said.

The 11-pound pooch will head home to East Berlin, Pa., to be a house pet. He also likes to stretch his tiny legs outdoors.

"Chases rabbits," Fitzpatrick said. "Tries."

Also, he said, in Malachy's future: "Have time for the ladies."

No need for a haircut to look his best. A Peke's hair naturally grows to its long length and doesn't require any trimming, just a lot of grooming.

Malachy beat out an impressive lineup of a Dalmatian, German shepherd, Doberman pinscher, Irish setter, Kerry blue terrier and wire-haired dachshund to become the nation's No. 1 pooch.

While the Garden crowd cheered louder and louder with every little step Malachy took on the green carpet, not everyone agreed with judge Cindy Vogels' choice.

The web immediately lit up with comments lampooning this Peke and the breed in general, with CNBC's Darren Rovell tweeting, "The Westminster Dog show winner the Pekingese is closer to a cat."

CNBC, incidentally, shared the television coverage on the opening night of the two-day show.

Fitzpatrick said there was a late-night party after the win. And by the time Malachy woke up early for the usual next-day tour of the town, he was already tuckered out.

Malachy made the rounds at the morning talk shows, then a visit to the top of the Empire State Building was canceled because of inclement weather. By the time he got to Sardi's shortly before 1 p.m., it had been a long day.

Fitzpatrick said Malachy was petted by about a thousand people during his trek through the city.

"I think he does know something's up," he said, telling Malachy "you're a celebrity now."

This was the terrifying moment a brave young mother battled to keep her beloved horse calm as sea water closed in on the animal after he became trapped in mud 'like quicksand'.

Exhausted and mud-splattered, Nicole Graham clung to her trapped horse Astro for three hours keeping his head high in a race against the tide.

The 78-stone show horse had sunk into quagmire-like mud and was facing the prospect of drowning as the water rose around them.

'Like quicksand': Both Miss Graham and her horse were stuck up to their waists in the mud as the tide was closing in

Swallowed up: Astro was stuck fast and Miss Graham's efforts to pull him free only resulted in herself sinking deeper into the quagmire

Miss Graham had been out on an afternoon ride with her daughter along the coast near Geelong, south of Melbourne, when 18-year-old Astro suddenly sank into the mud.

Before she could shout a warning, the smaller horse her daughter Paris was riding was also partially swallowed up by the mud.

After dragging herself through the mire, Miss Graham helped her daughter and the other horse on to firmer ground.

However, Astro was stuck fast and her efforts to pull him free only resulted in herself sinking deeper into the quagmire.
