How to Design Your Home Theater System
Firstly, from a point of view of cost, standard TVs are still cheaper than widescreen TVs, so if you have a restricted budget, this is worthy of consideration. You could perhaps get a good quality standard TV for the price of a budget widescreen model; definitely worth considering for your home theater design. The way the market is going, it will be possible to pick up standard TVs extremely inexpensively soon!

Download TV Shows in the Internet
Technology has surely made things simpler. The wonderful aspect is that it never ends. The cool things that we find amazing today, will only be a fraction of what's to come. Cell phones are a perfect example of this. Think back ten years ago. No one was carrying around wireless phones; well, not unless they were rich. Now days everyone is toting around a little communication device of some sort. We act like we need them or something.

How to Upgrade Your HDTV Definition Capability
Adding full high definition capability to your HDTV upgradeable TV is simple, but you need to keep in mind a couple things. To receive HDTV broadcasts, you will need a special antenna. With HDTV on DIRECTV, you will need a special satellite dish. And of course, you need the receiver. An HDTV receiver is similar to a conventional cable box. You connect it to your HDTV upgradeable set and use the receiver to switch channels.

What is Satellite Dish TV - Benefits of Dish TV Satellite
The number of options available with satellite television is overwhelming. Since the broadcast signals used in satellite television are digital, as compared with old analog, the results are crystal clear audio and visual transmissions. Broadcasts can be done in HDTV, or high definition television, which is the latest television technology. Digital transmissions allow a greater degree of flexibility for broadcasters.

HDTV is the Future of Television?
The biggest draw for HDTV is its clear picture. Plus, when you add in the the sound quality, you begin to understand why so many folks are rapidly swithching to HDTV. HDTV pictures contains close to 1100 lines in comparison to only 500 in a normal tv set. While you can possibly see the lines in a normal tv set, you will likely not detect the lines in an HDTV set.

What is Hughes Satellite Internet
Alternative options for Internet connection include dial-up, DSL and cable connection. Dial-up is the cheapest of these options, but is very slow. Many homes are not served by cable or are too far away from the telephone office for DSL. Hughes Satellite Internet offers a solution and inclement weather issues are no longer and issue for interference.

In terms of speed, Hughes Satellite Internet is the best of all the Internet options available. With HughesNet Satellite Internet Broadband, users can download files at an astounding 700 kbps. Uploading speed is 128 kbps. This means that the process of uploading and downloading would take a matter of minutes instead of hours or even days.

Hardware and Gadgets / Broadcast TV vs. Satellite TV
January 06, 2012, 10:12:01 AM
Broadcast TV vs. Satellite TV

Broadcast stations make use of a powerful antenna to transmit radio waves to the surrounding area within a specific range. The viewers of broadcast TV have a smaller antenna to pick up these signals transmitted by the station.

However, the smaller antenna should be in the direct line of sight of the station's antenna to be able to receive a good signal. The signal received is also often distorted unless the receiver is very near the transmitting station.

Satellite TV companies, on the other hand, have a solution to the range and distortion problems of broadcast TV. Satellite TV transmits broadcast signals through satellites orbiting the Earth. Since these satellites are situated high in the sky, there are definitely more receivers in the line of sight of the transmitted signal.

How Does Satellite Phone System Work?
For communication, satellite phones use what is called low earth orbiting satellites or LEO for short. The main advantage to using these types of satellites over other types such as geo stationary satellites, is that there is very little latency. Since low earth orbiting satellites are quite a bit closer to the earth, there is less delay in communication.

How to Set Up a Digital TV at Home
HDTV is high definition television and it can make a huge difference in your television viewing experience. Most consumers describe the HDTV experience as being closer to watching a movie in the theater than watching a standard television set in their living room. HDTV offers a digital picture with a higher resolution than normal television screens resulting in a clearer, crisper picture. It also offers the ability to watch widescreen movies and programs without the annoying black bars that your regular television displays(you know, the ones your mom won't stop complaining about). It is the way the movie directors intended you to watch their films.

Health and Food / Nescafe Dolce Gusto Coffee

Nescafe had launched its line of Dolce Gusto single-serve coffee machines and exclusive coffee capsules here in the country.

The machines have an innovative, easy-to-use system that allows users to make espresso-based drinks via capsules that have pre-measured ingredients, such as roasted and ground 100-percent Arabica coffee and whole milk.

The capsules, which are sealed airtight for maximum freshness, are popped in the machine; a lever is locked (to the red side for hot water and to the blue side for cold water); and coffee streams out of the machine in seconds.

“There’s no mess, no fuss,” said Nescafé Dolce Gusto consumer marketing manager Justin “Jiggy” Cruz. (Cruz is the nephew of President Aquino III.)

The capsules come in different flavors.

Caffé Lungo, intense full-bodied coffee with a rich aroma and velvety “crèma” layer, can be had using just one capsule.

Other flavors can be made using two-capsule combinations: Cappuccino, a shot of espresso topped with sweet frothy milk; Mocha, coffee with chocolate; and Vanilla Latte Macchiato, coffee with a hint of vanilla.

Hoping to lessen traffic snarls for the next year, the Traffic and Transport Management Committee met last week to discuss indispensable issues such as parking, pedestrian lanes and experimental schemes.

Chaired by Mayor Mauricio Domogan with concerned offices and representatives from the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), committee members tackled the need to reduce the number of pedestrian lanes along Session road, from six to three. There were however requests for the restoration of said pedestrian crossings citing consideration for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The mayor thus, requested for the preparation of a comprehensive evaluation report as to the benefits of the pedestrian lane closing. A coordinated traffic signal lights with countdown timers for vehicles and pedestrians shall also be installed at the said lanes, it was learned.
Another request was for the closure of pedestrian crossings along Harrison road fronting Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), and that beside Jollibee Harrison. Accordingly, said crossing lanes put pedestrians in danger due to vehicles from Lower Mabini street and Calderon street.
Blue pedestrian lanes exclusively for the use of senior citizens and PWDs were also requested, as with additional signages at said lanes.

The city government expects to bid out the operation of the city-owned Asin mini-hydroelectric plants in Tuba, Benguet to qualified private investors this January.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city looks forward to setting the project into motion to finally realize its thrust to maximize the power generating potential of the plants and restore their viability.

The plants’ operations have slackened since the city government took over the management in 2006 due to lack of funds and expertise.
Last June, the city council approved the terms of reference (TOR) for the contract to rehabilitate and manage the power generating facility.
The TOR provides the requirement for the “rehabilitation, upgrading, expansion, operation, maintenance and lease” of the mini-hydros for 20 years.

The bid components will be for rehabilitation and rental under the conditions that the operator shall invest a considerable amount of money for the rehabilitation, upgrading and expansion of the plants to produce 41,406,178 kilowatt hours, install independent substation and power line to the national grid.

President Benigno S. Aquino III has allocated P54 million to address the scarcity of safe drinking water in areas affected by Typhoon Sendong in Cagayan de Oro (CDO) City.

The President made the announcement after he visited the ‘Sendong’ victims in the evacuation centers in the cities of CDO and Iligan, last week.
He said the amount will be used for the rehabilitation/reconstruction and probable replacement of some components of the water system of the CDO Water District (COWD).

Reports after the Dec. 16 flashfloods indicated that 54 percent of the COWD system was submerged in water and destroyed by Sendong, rendering the whole city waterless in the first three (3) days.

Baguio Convention and Visitors Bureau (BCVB) chairperson and Hotels and Restaurants Association of Baguio President (HRAB) President Anthony De Leon affirmed the booming tourism industry in the city this yuletide season.

De Leon, in a kapihan forum on Wednesday, said that based on HRAB monitoring, almost all of their member establishments are now having 100 percent occupancy rate, aside from the high volume of vehicles, tourist buses and increasing schedule of daily trips from the regular bus companies in the city.

Compared to the previous years, De Leon said Baguio city has more visitors this time. Aside from the colder weather that greet visitors and the usual Christmas events and activities that the city government of Baguio prepared, private sector- led yuletide events and activities also play big role in enticing tourists to come up in the city.

For Baguio Country Club (BCC) alone, whom De Leon is the General Manager, their free concerts â€" featuring the famous bands of free style, side A and South border last December 27 and RJ Jacinto on Dec. 28 drew very big crowd.

The BCC’s Christmas Village, which decorations were made from recycled materials and made by the BCC employees and their families, also draws big crowd since it opened and with a snow show three times a day â€" morning, noon and evening, it now averages about 3,000 visitors a day.

SM City Baguio also has its own share of fun, entertainment and other enticing activities or events for its visitors this yuletide season.
According to De Leon, with the private sector doing its share in coming out with tourism activities and events whole year round, as well as with active promotions of such event in partnership with the city government of Baguio, the city’s tourism sector will get a fair or even better share of tourist arrivals compared to the other key tourist destinations in the country.

Philippine Daily News / Filipinos in Syria Need Help
January 01, 2012, 07:49:46 AM
by PNA

Upon the instruction of President Benigno S. Aquino III for the full implementation of crisis alert level 4 (mandatory repatriation) in Syria, Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario is set to leave for Damascus Saturday night to ensure that the conditions of Filipinos affected by the increasing tensions there can be made as secure as possible.

He will take the lead in the Philippine government's efforts to bring them out of harm's way from the said country.

"During this visit to Syria, we will seek the cooperation and assistance of Syrian officials in ensuring the safety of our people there, as well as to seek their assistance for the successful implementation of our repatriation program. Furthermore, we will ensure that all systems are in place in the Embassy to implement crisis alert level 4; we will also meet with Filipino community leaders to effect the widest dissemination of the mandatory repatriation, visit exit points and assess the security situation and contingency plans," Del Rosario said.

The DFA chief, who will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs Esteban Conejos Jr., will leave on board a Qatar Airways flight bound for Damascus.

"We are fully committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of our beloved Filipinos in Syria. Therefore, it is our objective to undertake the repatriation of our kababayans there as quickly as possible," Del Rosario added.

This is the second visit of Del Rosario to Syria. The secretary was in Syria in April 2011 to assess the political situation and to ascertain the conditions of Filipinos there.

Earlier, Del Rosario personally issued the appeal for Filipinos to have themselves repatriated to Manila at government's expense as he expressed concern over their safety in the wake of the reported escalating violence in Syria.

The Philippine embassy in Damascus reported that the capital remains on high alert and violence continues.

The DFA raised the crisis alert level in Syria from alert level 3 to alert level 4 last December 22. Under crisis alert level 4, mandatory repatriation at Philippine government's expense will be implemented.

A week before he enters prison, American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. settled Friday (Dec. 30) a misdemeanor battery charge filed against him by a security guard he poked in the face in 2010 by paying a US$ 1,000 fine.

Mary Ann Price, spokesperson of the Clark County Court in Las Vegas, Nevada, told this reporter over the phone it was Mayweather’s private defense lawyer, Karen Winckler, who paid the US$ 1,000 fine on behalf of Mayweather, who was not present before Department 3 Judge Janice Marshall, as Mayweather pleaded no contest to the complaint filed by Shane Smiths.

Mayweather was arrested on Dec. 17, 2010. It was reported that on Nov. 15, 2010, Smiths, 21, placed a parking ticket on Mayweather’s cars outside his home in Las Vegas. Mayweather had reportedly verbally abused Smiths while poking his finger in Smiths’ cheek. Smiths said there was redness and swelling under his eye as a result of the incident.

Winckler could not be reached for comment when contacted by this reporter.

Meanwhile, Judge Larry R. Hicks of the United States District Court in Las Vegas “denied without prejudice” the US$ 93,743.50 in attorney’s fees demanded by Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao’s lawyers for Mayweather’s refusal to comply with the court order to attend his deposition.

Mayweather is set to start serving his 90-day sentence on Jan. 6, 2012 at 10:45 a.m. at the Clack County Detention Center in Las Vegas as part of the plea bargaining in the felony allegations that he beat up his ex-girlfriend more than a year ago were reduced to one count of battery with domestic violence plea and two counts of harassments.

MAYWEATHER TO MARK 35TH BIRTHDAY IN JAIL

Mayweather will be celebrating his 35th birthday under detention on Feb. 24, 2012.

The undefeated boxing champion was also ordered to pay US$ 2,500 fine in felony cases.

Mayweather was originally charged in the case with two counts of coercion (Counts 1, 2), one count of robbery (Count 3); one count of grand larceny (Count 4), one count of battery constituting domestic violence (Count 5) and three counts of harassments (Counts 6, 7, 8) on Sept. 16, 2010, six days after his lawyers posted on Mayweather’s behalf US$ 3,000 cash bail.
Mayweather was also ordered to stay away from his girlfriend, Josie Harris, and from their “children (which) would be secondary to California Family Court Temporary Restraining Order.”
On Wednesday, Dec. 21, Counts 1-4 and 6 were dismissed. Mayweather was ordered “to stay away from trouble.” For Count 5 (one count of battery constituting domestic violence), defendant Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail suspended; US$ 500 fine; attend long-term DV (domestic violence) Counseling; 100 hours of community service work; 90 days in jail with 3 days credit time served; Count 7 (Harassment) - US$ 1,000 fine; and Count 8 (Harassment) - US$ 1,000; all to be taken out of cash bail.

PACQUIAO SHOULD ITEMIZE

In denying the request for payment of attorney’s fees on Pacquiao’s US$ 5-million defamation suit against Mayweather, Judge Hicks said, “the court has reviewed the documents and pleadings on file in this matter.” He finds that “the present motion for attorney’s fees fails to comply with LR 54-16.”

According to this law, the “motion for attorney’s fees must contain a “reasonable itemization and description of the work performed. In the motion for attorney’s fees, Pacquiao provides a general breakdown that counsel worked 196.9 hours on scheduling Mayweather Jr.’s deposition and drafting the related motions.

"The court finds that the provided itemization does not fall within the "reasonable itemization” confines of LR 54-16. The local rule contemplates a thorough breakdown of time including identifying the individuals who provided the work, what was being worked on, and the amount of time spent on the particular item. Because Pacquiao has failed to provide such a reasonable itemization, the court shall deny the present motion for attorney’s fees without prejudice. The court notes, however, that time spent drafting a renewed motion for attorney’s fees shall not be recoverable."

Aside from misdemeanor battery and felony allegations, Mayweather has three other pending cases of negligence filed by Clay Gerling, Anthony Cliff and Quincey Williams at the Clark County Court.

But a previous Associated Press report said Mayweather is facing another charge outside Las Vegas. Among them is his penalty to work a 40-hour community service with the Las Vegas Habitat for Humanity Project under a South Carolina federal judge’s order for dodging a deposition in a music rights lawsuit. Mayweather has yet to serve it.

Mayweather has also been arrested several times since 2002 in battery and violence cases in Las Vegas and in his native town of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He was acquitted by a Nevada jury in July 2005 after being accused of hitting and kicking Harris during an argument outside a Las Vegas nightclub.

He was acquitted again in October of misdemeanor allegations that he threatened two homeowner association security guards during a parking ticket argument.

Mayweather also faces a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas from two men who allege he orchestrated a shooting attack on them outside a skating rink in 2009. Police have never accused Mayweather of firing shots and he has never been criminally charged in the case. (PNA)

December 30, 2011, 07:48:07 AM
by Wabilyn Mana-od
BONTOC, Dec. 29 (PIA) -- About 28 portable street lamps were given to the 16 barangays of this capital town thru the initiative of Councilor Constancio Miranda as a way of assisting and guiding the way of the people.

The portable street lamps were distributed and turned over to every barangay chairman, who shall be responsible for its preservation and safekeeping the street lamp in their respective barangay.

Accordingly, Miranda considered this project of giving portable street lamps to different barangays since he had been observing in different occasions that most barangay roads are without lights and dark at night. He believes that the street lamps will be beneficial most especially on occasions such as weddings, gatherings, parties, programs and the like.

The portable street lamps still uses current to be functional, however; there is only minimal charge to electricity, he claimed.

The number of street lamp for each barangay depends on how large the area is. The larger the coverage, the more street lamps will be given that does not exceed to three street lamps each barangay. The turn-over of the street lamps started second week of December.

The Abra Provincial Police Office (APPO) had taped muzzles of all issued firearms last December 27 at the Camp Juan Villamor Headquarters in implementation of the Operation Plan Iwas Paputok (OPLAN Iwas Paputok).

The taping of gun muzzles aims to prevent indiscriminate firing by members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and all its attached units and agencies such as the Special Action Forces (SAF), the members of the Joint-Peace and Security Council, and the like.

The said activity is also in line with the information campaign of the Department of Health â€" Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD), “APIR! Give me 5” (Action Paputok Injury Reduction! Give me Five!) that urges people to refrain from firing firecrackers that could cause injuries as well as firearms.

Last year, the DOH-CHD-Cordillera had recorded two cases of stray bullet victims in the province.
There had been incidents where policemen had been involved in indiscriminate firing of their service firearms and this had created ire among the people against the men in uniform.

by Jomie Jean O. Apostol

Bureau of Fire Protection Deputy Director for Fire Safety and Prevention Senior Supt. Igmedio Bondoc on Thursday warned against imported firecrackers which are considered unregulated and illegal by law.

Bondoc said the imported firecrackers cannot be regulated because the materials used in manufacturing cannot be verified if compliant with the country’s standards.

“Automatic na bawal po yan ([Imported firecrackers] are automatically banned,” he said.
According to Republic Act 7183, only firecrackers containing one-third teaspoonful of gunpowder or less are allowed to be manufactured and used.

The Manila South Harbor Veterinary Quarantine Service (VQS) confiscated several bags of dog food from a shipment that arrived recently at the Port of Manila from China together with other non-agricultural products.

Upon verification the animal feeds were found to have no Veterinary Quarantine Clearance from the Bureau of Animal Industry. Said products were also not registered at BAI-Animal Feed Standard Division.

Out of the 60 bags confiscated items, a total of 24bags (480 kgs) were turned-over to the Veterinary Quarantine Service-South Harbor Manila Officer-in-Charge Dr. Enrico Miguel L. Capulong, and in turn to the Property Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry for proper disposal.

The Bureau of Animal Industry Director Efren C. Nuestro pointed out that although said items were declared for personal use, the importer must adhere to the guidelines on proper registration/accreditation procedures and to ensure that only quality products would reach the domestic market.

In a separate incidence, at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport at Clarkfield, Pampanga, duck meat weighing 15 kgs. was confiscated by Veterinary Quarantine Officer Dr. Ferdinand D. Montano. - source: PIA

In an interview with PIA-NCR, BFP Deputy Directorate for Fire Safety and Prevention SSupt. Igmedio Bondoc said people should report manufacturers and vendors of prohibited firecrackers, as these poses a threat to one’s health and may cause physical injury.
The law prohibits the selling of firecrackers with gunpowder measuring to more than a third of a teaspoon.

To report illegal vendors, Bondoc said, the people can call the nearest fire station, or police precinct. “O kung nakalimutan natin ito, just dial 117 (Or, you may just dial 117 on your phone),” he said.

Under Republic Act 7183, the law regulating the sale, manufacture, distribution of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices, those found guilty of selling illegal firecrackers, may be fined of not more than P30,000 or imprisonment of not less than six months or more than one year.
“Kasabay rito ang pagkumpiska ng mga illegal na firecrackers na kanilang ibenebenta (Also, the illegal firecrackers that they are selling will be confiscated by authorities),” he added.

To enhance the capability of the police force to effectively fight criminality and maintain peace and order, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) greenlighted the release of P115.6 million for additional maintenance and other operating expense (MOOE) of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Budget and Management Secretary Florencio B. Abad said the additional funding will support the efforts of the Aquino administration, through Secretary Jesse Robredo of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the DBM, to secure sufficient operation funds for precinct-level police operations.

"The fund will be directly distributed to the provincial, district, city and municipal stations based on the number of policemen for each PNP station. With this release, the smallest units in the PNP will be more capacitated to perform their duties. This is also a more transparent mode of providing funding for the police force," he said.

He noted the National Capital Region and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao will receive the highest budgetary augmentation of P24.82 million and P19.54 million, respectively.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona is backing the institutionalization of firecracker zones â€" through Congress â€" in every district in the country where firecrackers and fireworks can be lighted, thereby, reducing the risk of human injuries.

Ona said he prefers a law that is nationwide in scope rather than local government unit (LGU) regulated. Aside from this, he sees the law, once in place, as a tool for the country’s fireworks industry to upgrade its capacity to produce safe and regulated firecrackers.

He pointed out that the issue on firecrackers and fireworks requires a multi-disciplinary approach. This means that laws related to health, manufacture of firecrackers, and smuggling of such must be implemented strictly.

For now, the health secretary is appealing to parents not to allow their children to buy and light up firecrackers. “Do not allow your children, even just to hold a firecracker,” he said.

Rather, he suggested that the nation celebrate the turn of the year with the use of noisy yet safe tools such as little trumpets.
According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, firecrackers containing more than a third of a teaspoon are considered unsafe, thus, prohibited for sale to the public. Among these are Pla-Pla, Super Lolo, Piccolo, OG, Cabase, Goodbye Philippines, Bin Laden, and Goodbye Bading.
