Philippine Daily News / Female Body Found at NAIA
January 12, 2012, 11:16:02 AM
by PNA

Airport authorities on Wednesday said that a female body was found stuffed in a medium suitcase and was left in an open parking area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminal 2.

The suitcase was first reported as an unattended baggage at 7:50 a.m. by lady guard, Ma. Teresa Garbo, who during that time has been doing routine check inside the public parking area.

According to airport assistant general manager for security and emergency services Vicente Guerzon, the victim, who was wearing a blue blouse and black pants, was estimated to be 18 years old.

“This is the first incident that a body has been dumped at the airport’s public parking lot. We are still waiting for the progress report from the Philippine National Police since this is a criminal case,” according to Guerzon.

Guerzon added that police have found a baggage tag bearing the name of “Netz Aly Bagin”, but he said it could not yet establish if this is the name of the victim.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Jose Angel Honrado believed that the body was brought and dumped at around 5 a.m. at the terminal 2’s parking area where international flights of flag carrier Philippine Airlines have started arriving.

“There was no blood stain in the suitcase when investigators from the PNP’s scene of the crime operatives checked the body and the suitcase,” Honrado said, adding “wala pang amoy ang katawan.”

Effective February 1, 2012, all departing international passengers will now pay P550 each instead of the usual P750 terminal fee, after collecting extra P200 for a five-year period has ended.

Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) chief Jose Honrado added that by yearend, the P550 would be incorporated in the departing passenger’s plane ticket.

He said his office has received complaints from passengers, preferring to pay by means of credit card after they ran out of the local currency on entering the airport, giving their small bills away to drivers and friends.

Others said they prefer to carry credit cards with them instead of cash.

The MIAA had already installed this year several credit card machines for passengers' use in each of the four passenger terminals.

The MIAA started collecting the P200 security fee to buy x-ray scanners, guns, closed-circuit television, bomb sniffing K-9s, vehicles and close to a total of 20 other pieces of equipment to enhance the airport defense and safety.

The MIAA was able to collect some P3.9 billion in five years, of which P1.65 billion had been earmarked for security enhancement projects, according to Connie Bungag, the chief of Public Affairs Office.

One of the losing bidders for a contract to supply fire-fighting equipment to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has questioned the decision of the BFP to declare a failure of the bidding after the winner, Kolonwel Trading Inc., was disqualified.

The losing firm 911 Alarm said it was curious that BFP officer in charge Samuel Perez had “ruled the bidding a failure when there was still an eligible bidder, which, in this case, was our company.”
911 noted that its bid “was almost the same” as Kolonwel’s which wasP243 million.

Kolonwel, which entered into a joint venture with a foreign partner, InSeung Apparel, for the contract, was disqualified by the BFP for failing to comply with documentary requirements.
In a letter to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Marcial P. Lichauco Jr., president and general manager of 911 Alarm, also denied the company had skirted bidding rules when it questioned the award of the contract to Kolonwel, setting the stage for the latter’s disqualification.

Contemporary art exhibit showcases Cebuano talents

Paintings and sculptures of contemporary Cebuano artists were featured in the art exhibit, dubbed Contemporary Cebu, which opened last Jan. 4 at the Cebu City Museum.

The exhibit, which is curated by JV Castro, is designed to bring national attention to contemporary Cebuano artists and their works. It is open to the public until Jan. 31.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, during the opening ceremonies, lauded the initiative undertaken to make the exhibit possible, saying it is a way to recognize Cebuano talents in visual arts as well as to promote the Cebu City Museum.

The Alternative Contemporary Art Studio, Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI), and The Grove by Rockwell, partnered together to launch this annual exhibit. The first exhibit was held in June 2011 in Manila at the Ateneo de Manila University and Picasso Boutique Hotel.

This year’s Contemporary Cebu art exhibit features the works of Palmy Pe-Tudtud, Marvin Natural, Kidlat of the Junks Collective, Karl Roque, Sio Montera, Ritchie Quijano, and Tito Cuevas. Russ Ligtas will give Butoh performances on Jan. 12 and 13.

"It is an exhibition that features some of the finest artists we have in Cebu. All the works in the exhibit are done by Cebuano artists who specialize in contemporary works, meaning the portrayal of subjects are different. In a way, we want to promote Cebu in a different light,” Castro said.

Dennis “Sio” Montera, one of the participating artists shared the inspiration and stories behind his paintings.

“My art is more on expression of the things that have been relevant in my lifeâ€"happiness, sadness, loss of loved one, any life experience. For me, the best way I can communicate or deal with my emotions is to paint. It is more likely the reflection of a current situation of my life. It's like a diary, mirroring what is happening around me,” he said.

Alternative Contemporary Art Studio and RAFI have been partners since Contemporary Cebu’s inception in 2011. This year, they took in The Grove by Rockwell as a major partner. The other sponsors of the exhibit are the Cebu City Government, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission of Cebu City, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Blue Shield Risk Management, Gothong Southern, Michelangelo Pizzeria, and Hola España.

“Contemporary Cebu is a good opportunity for introducing the Cebuano audience to contemporary arts and for them to be familiar who the Cebuano contemporary visual artists are," said Dr. Jocelyn Gerra, executive director of Culture and Heritage of RAFI. Mercedes-Benz Korea planned to recall 2,424 diesel cars in South Korea for a defective fuel filter in five diesel models, the transportation ministry said Sunday.

Voluntary recall would be made for 2,424 diesel sedans with faulty fuel filters that could leak oil on the road, and in turn make dangerous driving conditions for cars that follow behind, according to the Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs.

The cars subject to recall include 549 units of C220CDI model manufactured between Jan. 3, 2007 and Dec. 15, 2008, 717 units of E220CDI produced between July 4, 2006 and Jan. 15, 2009, 529 units of ML280CDI made between April 18, 2006 and March 18, 2009, 554 units of ML300CDI produced between July 15, 2009 and April 6, 2011 and 75 units of S350BLUETEC manufactured between Aug. 5, 2010 and Feb. 2, 2011.

Owners of the defective vehicles can contact the service centers operated by Mercedes-Benz Korea for free repairs starting Monday, while those who had their cars repaired in advance can be reimbursed for their costs, the ministry said. - by PNA

A decade after the full adoption of the euro, it seems the alarm is ringing for the European single currency.

On Friday, euro slumped to its another 16-month low on upbeat U.S. job data and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde's remarks that euro is unlikely to "vanish" in 2012.

As the more than two-year-old sovereign debt crisis sees no quick end, and economists warn of a second recession upcoming, doubt is growing over whether the 17 nations that use euro can hold together.

Some analysts say Greece may become the first eurozone member to leave the currency union, while euro skeptics urge banks to prepare for catastrophic contagion in the global financial market following a likely euro break-up.

Such pessimism is at best a necessary caution over the European sovereign debt problem, but it could actually threaten euro stability by denting confidence among investors.

If panic over a euro break-up is not contained, debt-stricken countries floundering to tighten fiscal control and regain economic growth would have to accept still higher borrowing costs.

The collapse of the euro is not in the interest of any party in the world. It may lead to the break-up of the eurozone, delivering a serious blow to the Continent's long-planned project of regional economic and political integration.

The United States and other major trading partners of the European Union will also suffer from the breakdown. Exchange rate issues, inflation, trade protectionism may reemerge after the euro is replaced by national currencies.

On the global financial market, a euro break-up may cause massive losses to investors and have severe ripple effects more devastating than the Lehman Brothers collapse in late 2008.

Abandoning the euro, now the world's second largest reserve currency, would also increase the global dependence on the U.S. dollar and hinder the progress on the much-hoped shift toward a multipolar reserve system.

China, as the major trading partner of the EU, hopes European leaders will implement an effective rescue plan to help the single currency tide over the crisis.

As EU's second largest trading partner, China has been lending continuous help to pull the continent out of the current financial turmoil, because China will also suffer if the euro breaks down.

The Chinese government has repeatedly said that it has been a long-term investor in European sovereign debts and will continue to support Europe and the euro.

A prosperous and stable Europe is important not only to economies in the EU, but also to other countries, big or small, because of the interdependence in the global economic and financial systems.

10. (a) 4 (b) 2 ( c) 3 (d) 5 (e) 6 (f) 1
Now add up the total number of points.

OVER 60 POINTS: Others see you as someone they should "handle with care." You're seen as vain, self-centered, and who is extremely dominant. Others may admire you, wishing they could be more like you, but don't always trust you, hesitating to become too deeply involved with you.

51 TO 60 POINTS: Others see you as an exciting, highly volatile, rather impulsive personality; a natural leader, who's quick to make decisions, though not always the right ones. They see you as bold and adventuresome, someone who will try anything once; someone who takes chances and enjoys an adventure. They enjoy being in your company because of the excitement you radiate.

41 TO 50 POINTS: Others see you as fresh, lively, charming, amusing, practical, and always interesting; someone who's constantly in the center of attention, but sufficiently well-balanced not to let it go to their head. They also see you as kind, considerate, and understanding; someone who'll always cheer them up and help them out.

31 TO 40 POINTS: Others see you as sensible, cautious, careful & practical. They see you as clever, gifted, or talented, but modest. Not a person who makes friends too quickly or easily, but someone who's extremely loyal to friends you do make and who expect the same loyalty in return. Those who really get to know you realize it takes a lot to shake your trust in your friends, but equally that it takes you a long time to get over if that trust is ever broken.

21 TO 30 POINTS: Your friends see you as painstaking and fussy. They see you as very cautious, extremely careful, a slow and steady plodder. It would really surprise them if you ever did something impulsively or on the spur of the moment, expecting you to examine everything carefully from every angle and the n, usually decide against it. They think this reaction is caused partly by your careful nature.

UNDER 21 POINTS: People think you are shy, nervous, and indecisive, someone who needs looking after, who always wants someone else to make the decisions & who doesn't want to get involved with anyone or anything! They see you as a worrier who always sees problems that don't exist. Some people think you' re boring. Only those who know you well know that you aren't.

LGU Philippines / SWS Survey on Renato Corona
January 07, 2012, 07:22:36 AM
Amid allegations that he had been partial to the interests of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, embattled Chief Justice Renato Corona posted a “poor” net satisfaction rating that plunged 14 points from the previous quarter, according to a recent survey of the Social Weather Stations.

Results of the Fourth Quarter 2011 Social Weather Survey, first published in the BusinessWorld, showed that from a zero net satisfaction in September, Corona’s rating dropped to minus 14, with 21 percent of respondents saying they were satisfied with his performance and 35 percent saying otherwise.

Since his controversial appointment as Chief Justice in May 2010, Corona’s net satisfaction rating has not breached positive territory in earlier SWS surveys. Corona got his lowest rating of minus 18 in June 2010, while his highest net rating so far is zero, which he got in June and September last year.

The latest survey, which made use of face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adults nationwide, was conducted from Dec. 3 to 7, when President Aquino was assailing several decisions by the court, including one that allowed Arroyo to travel abroad which the Department of Justice at any rate defied.

Arroyo, now a Pampanga representative, is currently detained at Veterans Memorial Medical Center on charges of electoral sabotage. - PDI

Technology / Next Mobile in the Philippines
January 06, 2012, 06:45:50 PM
by Paolo Montecillo, PDI

Filipino consumers may soon witness the revival of one of the country’s pioneering mobile network brands following the signing of a deal between China’s Huawei International and a local firm for the supply of new equipment to Next Mobile Inc.

Listed firm Information Capital Technology Ventures Inc. (ICTV) in a disclosure said it was initially spending $12 million for the expansion of subsidiary Next Mobile, formerly Nextel Communications, with the goal of regaining its foothold in the country’s telecom sector.

“Huawei will supply and deliver the necessary telecommunications infrastructure and systems required in the nationwide build-up plans of Next Mobile, with (ICTV) providing funding,” the company told the Philippine Stock Exchange.
ICTV, which invests mainly in local technology startups, approved the deal on December 29.

The supply deal is in line with the memorandum of understanding signed by ICTV and the Chinese telecom giant last September. The signing was done during the Philippine-Eastern China Business Forum held at Shangri-La Hotel in Shanghai, China’s financial center.

Cost of Satellite TV Today

In the past, Satellite TV systems were expensive and considered a luxury service. Today, however, it is very affordable and many TV watchers prefer it. Once more, the cost of the cable television has steadily been rising. The satellite television subscribers receive high quality, digital signal. Plus, service packages come with additional features included such as internet access, satellite radio, and more in their base price. From a users view, one of the best advantages of the satellite TV system is that it offers additional information about shows - something that you could not get with traditional cable television.

Is It Just Military Surveillance With CCTV?
CCTV is extensively being used in security system of industries, banks, super markets homes and all such places which are perceived as strategically and financially important. Commercial establishments using CCTV have increased manifolds in UK although it is not so common in US as it is perceived as a privacy threat. New York City has about 4000 CCTV installations and most of which are in shopping malls and other public places such as Liberty Statue, Lincoln Express, British Parliament, and places of strategic importance. Traffic monitoring and prosecution & crime detection have leapfrogged with the advent of CCTV.

Analog TV vs Digital TV - Compared Pros and Cons
Analog is becoming less and less popular. In some areas, this service isn't even available - it's digital or nothing! This is a good thing in my opinion. Let's keep the quality standard high. Analog video quality is not as good as digital and is transferred using antenna and receivers (a.k.a. a bunch of junk that is outdated). If you're watching TV that uses an analog signal, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Spread of Satellite TV in India

Satellite TV should be seen as an unparalleled vehicle for spreading Indian culture, ideas and views to the rest of Asia, and eventually to the whole world. Programmes like The India Show and India Business Report of Star TV do far more for India's image that anything that Indian embassies or All India Radio ever could. Stat TV an Zee TV beam many advertisements of Indian companies all over Asia, but carry virtually no ads from Pakistani or Bangladeshi companies. This shows how satellite TV has transformed India's clout as an audience into international commercial clout of national importance.

Types of Set-top Boxes
Set-top boxes may be associated with these major categories:

(1) Broadcast TV Set-top Boxes - The more elementary level set-top box with no back channel (return channel.) These might however come with some memory, interface ports and some processing power.
(2) Enhanced TV Set-top Boxes - These have a back channel (return channel), often through a phone line, and are the mainstay of today's set-top boxes. These are capable of Video on Demand, e-commerce, Internet browsing, e-mail communications, chat and more. They are giving way to the next category.
(3) Advanced Set-top Boxes - A fully integrated set-top box. These have good processors, memory and optional large hard-drives. They're often used with high-speed connections. Advanced set-top boxes are more likely to be integrated with DVRs and high-definition TV oriented functionality. See Media Centers.

How to Order Dish Network Product
Rather than ordering the product from Dish Network, take some time and browse through their dealers. These dealers will offer you much better deals and much more freebies. The reason behind this is pretty simple. They are online, so the investment is much less when compared to a brick and mortar store. They pass on this cost savings to the consumers as discounts and freebies. The other reason is plain old competition. There is cut throat competition nowadays. One wants to beat the other. Hence the consumer benefits again. So, start browsing and looking for the best deal on Dish Network.

The satellite dish is installed by the companies you are getting your programming from.
