The two-day visit of President Benigno Aquino III has further inspired visitors' confidence to this mountain resort, which in the past few decades had its role as one of the international tourist destinations.

This was confirmed by both the residents and visitors, many of whom tried to take a glimpse of the son of their idol -the late President Corazon C. Aquino.

Victor Calimlim, a leader of the public market cooperative here, said the sales of vegetables, marine products, livestock, general merchandise and souvenirs shot up more than 100 percent compared to sales during ordinary days.

Vivien Cabangis from Urdaneta, Pangasinan said she brought her family here knowing that they can enjoy the amenities of the city while the tight security for the President and party would assure the absence of any problem of peace and order.

True to her observation, the police blotters of the city police's eight precincts were almost spotless since Saturday except for some violations of ordinances like jaywalking and littering.

To this hour, there are still a good number of those in the parks and would only leave the city afterwards when President shall be returning to Manila.

Nars Padilla, one of the prominent leaders here, said "the President's anti-corruption campaign has started to benefit the country with the lesser number of abusive officials. This is now translated into strengthened confidence of the people in our government especially with our law enforcers."

Aquino, who spent the night at the Mansion House, was able to meet earlier Cordillera officials who included Benguet provincial governor Nestor Fongwan, Baguio city mayor Mauricio Domogan.

Children with heavy school bags are facing a higher risk of back pain, a latest study revealed.

A team of Spanish researches reported that the link was found in more than 1,400 school children aged between 12 and 17 in Northern Galicia, Spain, according to a report on the British journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The pupils were split into four groups based on the weight of their bags. Those in the group with the heaviest bags had a 50-percent higher risk of back pain, and a 42-percent higher risk of back pathology, compared with the group with the lightest bags.

A common back pathology in pupils is scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of the spine.

"The results obtained have strong implications," co-author of the study, Professor Alberto Ruano, of the Unviersity of Santiago de Compostel in Spain said in the journal.

"We strongly encourage the medical and educational community to start advising parents and school children about the risk posed by heavy school bags and the fact that this risk can be easily reduced," he added. - PNA

A decline in cerebrovascular diseases and other forms of chronic illness has helped push up South Korea's life expectancy in the past 20 years, a report showed Sunday.

The report by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) showed men and women living 4.77 years and 5.34 years longer, respectively, in 2010 compared to 1990.

The average life expectancy among South Koreans in 1990 stood at 77.39 years for men and 82.16 years for women, and in 2010 those averages rose to 81.29 years and 86.63 years.

The KHIDI said the rise can be attributed to steady advances in medical science and overall improvements in health-related social infrastructure that helped reduced life-threatening diseases.

It said that headways in medicine have significantly reduced the number of people afflicted with cerebrovascular disease.

The report showed that a drop in people suffering from stroke and other types of blood vessel dysfunctions raised the life expectancy of men and women by 0.657 years and 0.891 years during the 20 years that were checked.

The institute, however, said that while there was a general drop in cerebrovascular disease among people under 65, the number of deaths attributed to the illness, usually brought on by high blood pressure and diabetes, rose for older people.

"There was a noticeable rise in deaths caused by brain blood vessel problems for men over 65 and women over 70," the report said.

South Korean scientists said Sunday they have discovered an enzyme capable of suppressing growth of both solid tumors and blood cancers, opening up the possibility of treating the potentially fatal disease.

A research team led by An Sung-kwan, a microbial engineering professor at Seoul's Konkuk University, said the Mulan E3 ligase effectively deals with the Akt protein, kinase which plays a key role in the growth and spread cancer in the body.

"The Mulan enzyme has been found to act as a powerful dissolver of Akt by utilizing the mitochondria in cells," the team said. Mitochondria are "cellular power plants" that control cell differentiation, cell death, and cell growth.

The discovery is noteworthy because the close connection between Akt and cancer has been known since the late 1990s, although efforts to regulate the gene have failed to make headway so far. An overactive Akt is directly linked to cancer growth and also builds tolerance for chemotherapy.

The Konkuk team added that because Mulan can regulate the Akt, further development could lead to a way to combat solid tumors of lung, breast and uterine cancers, as well as blood cancer like lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, which funded the project, said the Mulan discovery is a meaningful step forward and expands the sphere of anti-cancer treatment. - source

- source: bulgar news

NEW DELHIâ€"Indian census data has revealed that more homes in the country of 1.2 billion people have a telephone than a toilet.

The figures, collected during the 2011 census, shed a light on how India’s rapid communication revolution has spread through society but that basic sanitation is still scarce.

Data unveiled late Tuesday said 47 percent of the country’s 330 million households have toilet facilities, but that 63 percent of homes have telephone connections â€" mostly mobiles.
