Love Talk / Re: Significance of Friends

Quote from: hazel on July 07, 2007, 05:04:06 PM
True friendship is about putting your feet up and knowing that someone is there to bail you out when the world might walk out on you. Besides, as a support system in today's hectic world, friends are the most reliable sources for social, intellectual and creative stimulations.

In the present fast pace age of nuclear families where people have little time to spend with each other, friends have become indispensable. Then there are times when we find it tough to discuss matters with our family members or even with our spouse, it is on occasions such as these that friends come to our support. They guide us and become our pillar of strength when we need them most. And the best part is we don't really need to put things in words when communicating issues to our best friends. Most often friends understand us, just by looking at us or hearing our voice. This heart-to-heart bonding is what makes friendship so exclusive, setting it apart from all other relationships.

However strong a relationship maybe, it constantly needs to be nurtured with love and care. We must therefore never lose an opportunity to express our feelings and the warmth we may be experiencing for our friends. We may do this by sending flowers, a heartfelt card or a thoughtful gift. We may also do this by being together with a friend in times of joy or sorrow. The idea is to keep expressing our unconditional love and support to our dearest friend let the friendship evolve.

This is very true. Nurture is essential to the continuity of a healthy friendship and mutual understanding.

How are you now, Aleth? I miss you.

Lord, it is in suffering that we are purified.
So let us suffer and be purified.

Lord, it is in dying that we are born into eternal life.
May our deaths be filled with holiness

Lord, it is in loving that one is loved,
let us love and learn to love those whom hate us

Lord, it is in forgiving that we are forgiven,
Let us learn to forgive.

Lord God,

Let our prayers be heard unto your throne and ask that your whispers be made louder
so that those who are called may hear,
so that those who have weaknesses may put away their fears and trust in you.,
and to lead by example,
as did your son, Padre Pio, whom answered the call,
may you be glorified and that may there be many more men who answer the calling.

Strengthen, guard, and protect them, Father.
That many more answer the calling,
many more to fill your most Holy Place within Your Church.

In Christ Jesus Lord's Name,
Amen.

St. Silvan, Martyr Priest of Christ, Pray for Us.

~~

He was a Misisonary Priest who spread the faith in present-day Croatia.
He was martyred in the 4th Century AD. He is an Incorruptable Saint--for almost 2 thousand years, he has not decomposed at all. The present location where his body is laid to rest is in St. Blaise's Cathedral in Croatia. He was buried by Christian converts and when later exumed, his body was well preserved. Croatia remains a Catholic Nation. To this very day.

It fascinates me and amazes me, as a man of science, and one who studies histology and microbiology in medicine, we are taught and we literally study (via taking tissue samples for cellular analysis via light and electron microscopy) the cellular components and the process of decay.

The body is built to last for only a while, and will decompose, by natural way of autolysis, after death. Autolysis is when the cells of the body will break down because of protein collapse and with that, the release of enzymes within specific cells that will in turn digest the entire body, from tissues to proteins to cartilage, to muscle, and even hair. This is the way of nature.

If the body is not embalmed within literally 1 day of death, the body will start decompositional decay, and the body will start to bloat and the process of autolysis occurs after that. Within 1-2 weeks, there will be nothing left but melting flesh and by 1 month, the body is unrecognizable as soft tissue is molten. By 6months to 1 year, there will be nothing left but bone and some particulates such as hair.

If a body is elmbalmed, then it can hold back decomposition for no more than 3-5 years, after that, it will also decompose. As formalin has a specific half life and will itself undergoe chemical decay.

However, the body of Father Pio, has not even at all decomposed. He has no signs of fungal growth in the face, no tissue loss, and has retained structural stability even after 30+ years of being dead. His body has literally defied the natural way of death. How is this when he was not even embalmed?

Amazing. :)

It is truly amazing how the LORD, in his WISDOM and GLORY defies the very laws that he has written in nature. As if to tell us that He is above the LAW, since HE did overcome the law through the coming of His Son, Christ Jesus.

Padre Pio has always told us in life, "Believe in God, Pray, and alway pray, for he listens always...."

And in death, he reminds us that the LORD is indeed always...always...in CONTROL.

:)

Poems and Poets / Re: To The Lonely Old Man
June 04, 2010, 01:24:15 PM
I wrote this poem in my journal in October 2004, when I started volunteering at Wesbury United Methodist Home Health Care Center. A nursing home for the aged.

Part of the duties as a collegiate volunteer was a daily round to talk to tome of the residents, many of whom were widows, widowers, or forgotten by their family and loved ones.

There was a man who I did have the honor of getting to know, his name was Charlie. A man in his 80s.

Though he was aged, his memory was strong: the conversations we had was multifaceted. From his experience in World War II (Pacific Theater), to his children, wife, loved ones, former loves, farming days, life in Ohio, growing up during the great depression, and to the current era.

It was therapy for him to be heard. And it was enlightening for me to listen and listen and have a 'peak' into his life.

He passed away a couple of months later. But he is not forgotten, for his life story is etched in my book, and in my mind.

And I am now sharing it with you all.

Charles, who is no more, lives on through a poem, and his former love did not leave him. Till his dying breath.

It is funny, how in the end, we never really forget our 'first love' or 'old sweethearts'.

In the end.

With utmost respect for Mr. Abunda, I believe that it took alot of inner strength, professional commitment, and personal consolidation, to say what he said and to commit to his decision.

I like him. He is truly an example of a man of principle. He, unlike many of our countrymen, who change from post to post, from media to politics, is not in it for political and personal glory. But rather, is devoted and dedicated to his personal strengths and role in society, as is.

He is an efficient public speaker, either he stays in show business or  proceeds to politics, his strengths stays the same.

Dedication, Loyalty, and Principle.

He is a man to be admired. :)

History / Re: Emperor Hirohito's Surrender Speech
June 04, 2010, 12:15:04 PM
To our good and loyal subjects:  After pondering deeply the general trends of the world and the actual conditions obtaining in our empire today, we have decided to effect a settlement of the present situation by resorting to an extraordinary measure.

We have ordered our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that our empire accepts the provisions of their joint declaration.

To strive for the common prosperity and happiness of all nations as well as the security and well-being of our subjects is the solemn obligation which has been handed down by our imperial ancestors and which we lay close to the heart.

Indeed, we declared war on America and Britain out of our sincere desire to insure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia, it being far from our thought either to infringe upon the sovereignty of other nations or to embark upon territorial aggrandizement.

But now the war has lasted for nearly four years.  Despite the best that has been done by everyone--the gallant fighting of our military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of out servants of the State and the devoted service of our 100,000,000 people--the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest.

Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives.   Should we continue to fight, it would not only result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization.

Such being the case, how are we to save the millions of our subjects, nor to atone ourselves before the hallowed spirits of our imperial ancestors?  This is the reason why we have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the joint declaration of the powers.

We cannot but express the deepest sense of regret to our allied nations of East Asia, who have consistently cooperated with the Empire toward the emancipation of East Asia.

The thought of those officers and men as well as others who have fallen in the fields of battle, those who died at their posts of duty, or those who met death [otherwise] and all their bereaved families, pains our heart night and day.

The welfare of the wounded and the war sufferers and of those who lost their homes and livelihood is the object of our profound solicitude.  The hardships and sufferings to which our nation is to be subjected hereafter will be certainly great.

We are keenly aware of the inmost feelings of all of you, our subjects.  However, it is according to the dictates of time and fate that we have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the [unavoidable] and suffering what is unsufferable.  Having been able to save *** and maintain the structure of the Imperial State, we are always with you, our good and loyal subjects, relying upon your sincerity and integrity.

Beware most strictly of any outbursts of emotion that may engender needless complications, of any fraternal contention and strife that may create confusion, lead you astray and cause you to lose the confidence of the world.

Let the entire nation continue as one family from generation to generation, ever firm in its faith of the imperishableness of its divine land, and mindful of its heavy burden of responsibilities, and the long road before it.  Unite your total strength to be devoted to the construction for the future.  Cultivate the ways of rectitude, nobility of spirit, and work with resolution so that you may enhance the innate glory of the Imperial State and keep pace with the progress of the world.

Quote from: Mike Ortega Ligalig on June 01, 2010, 03:26:24 PM

Manila Bulletin

President-apparent Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III said on Monday he is seriously considering television talk show host Boy Abunda to serve in government if he is willing to sacrifice his career in show business and divest interest from the private sector.

Although Aquino did not name the office where he could possibly appoint Abunda, he hinted that the television host's communication skills and marketing expertise can be utilized in tourism and foreign affairs, citing Abunda's taking of a Masteral Degree in International Relations on Public Diplomacy at the Philippine Women's University.

Eugenio Abunda Jr., in real life, the talk show host underwent seminary formation at the University of Santo Tomas and attended college at the Ateneo de Manila University for Business Management, which he failed to finish.

But Aquino said asking Abunda to serve in public office will be a challenge considering the compensation Abunda gets from being a television personality and a talent manager.

This is interesting to read about, Mike. I discussed this with my father earlier this week and we both agree that Mr. Abunda is, indeed, a proficient public speaker. Whatever his decision is, his talent in the public state is noteworthy. I also recently found out from my father that Abunda is Visayan. Apparently the man is from Samar-Leyte.

(i dedicate this to an old , old friend who i used to talk to when i volunteered at a nursing home)

oh delicate old man who dreams of past
things done
love given
hearts broken
kisses taken
kisses given

i understand your sighs your mourning
your weeping
for your dreams of past
were glory days
on such things that giveth soul
morning haze.

But weep no more o dear old man
for love given
is not love lost
for you see, even if love be unrequitted
even if a heart given falls on deaf ears,
the romance and passion of your past
does not die, but transforms into the spirit

So i say to you, think not of old past failures,
for sure they are not.

And such memories will be with thee
till last breath out.

Kiss me again, oh flower most radiant,
where on do you go if not for me,
and as the sun sets by the palisades reflect on our view
your eyes pierceth to my bosom

Kiss me again, i say with my eyes.
Can you hear my message?
Do you hear me, when i talk to you through my stare
a smile with quaint reflection shows affirmation
yes or no.

I take my hand and offer it,
your eyes on me, slowly, delicately take it,
by finger tip.

And as a jaguar climbs his tree by Amazonia High,
so do i on kissing you again.

Let my sweet soft lips brush upon thee,

For those who do not understand Spanish, the video is talking about the need for Spain and The Philippines to uphold their 'Maternal' Bonds and stress the importance of the Spanish Language being taught again in the Philippines. The Spaniards talk about Rizal and the importance of the umbilical bond that Spain has with the Philippines, and vice versa, the notion of religion, faith, and governance being a common bond.

The Spaniards have a nostalgic tone in their presentation; as they refer to Las Filipinas as a bastion of Spanish Culture in the East. A jewel of the Spanish Empire.

Very interesting video.

Different styles and tastes man ang uban nga tawo, bai bugsay, naay ubang tawo that look good with a beard, some do not, some cannot grow, some can. Naay koy amigo nga dili siya mo grow ko ug beard kai rough kono looking. Pero in the end, he ended trying to grow a beard, pero dili man sija maka grow the total beard; only patches sa sideburns and moustache. Hahaha, intchikon man gud, wa jamo siya dugo nga Castilla...

Sure ko that when you grew your beard, you looked good.
The trick bitaw, in growing one is trimming it and trying to keep it clean. The first time i grew a beard (about 2 years ago) i did not know how to trim it, or style it so it grew like everywhere, hahaha.

Then maka realize bitaw ta that there are so many styles we can do with facial hair. From beard, full beard, thin beard, side burns, goatie, mustache, etc etc.

~~

During the end of our first year, we had a beard growing competition between the men in my class. I tried to enter it but one of the guys said that i wouldnt be able to grow one because Asian man kono ko. Nakatawa ko. So i entered it bitaw. Nake surprised bitaw ang mga India, Pakis, ug Arabo and some white guys in my class because they never saw an asian guy grow a beard kono.

Ingon bitaw ko, "Don't generalize..."

Valencianon man gud ka, bai bugsay,...daghang mestizong Castilla dinha sa Valencia, especialemente sa Pobblacian sa Sawang.
Mao na maka grow ka ug bungot. :)

Indeed Confucius was a great teacher and his influence is vast and deep.

Confucius wrote a treatise on The Necessity of Filial Piety for Dynamic Harmony. He expounds how it is necessary, this notion of filial piety, for the harmony of nature as well as in society.

"Just as the leaves and grass bow before the will of the Wind, so does the wind bow before the Will of Heaven whom sent it. So shall the children bow before their parents, the wife bows before the husband, the soldiers before the general, the lawmakers before the lawgiver, the ministers before the king, the king before the Emperor, and the Emperor before the Emperor of Heaven."

This notion of the mandate of Heaven was integral to Confucian societies, and was the essential factor for the blossoming of Confucianism and Honest Work Ethic and Honor that has retained in East Asian Societies.

The Philippine government and politicians can learn alot from them, and I believe that the inter-national exchanges between the Philippines and the Koreans in terms of economics, political discourse, and environmental initiatives is, definitely, a step forward.

Thank You, Mr. Lagunay, for representing Bohol and the Boholano people in your sojourn to Korea.

Growth thus far:

Tip: when shaving, make sure to shave off the lower lip hair, as i find it quite itchy if kept. When you do clean the sides , do so softly and layer the beard as it grows. Apply ample amount of after shave to areas that are 'clean cut'. You get this amazing transition from clean baby-soft to beardy. I love it. I hope you guys who are growing beards try this out as it does look good.

2nd Tip: Make sure to trim the excess patches if you can. Keep everything uniform.

Mr. Lagunay,

Thank you for sharing that interesting cultural aspect of the Koreans. I could not help but link it to their Confucian Culture (something that they were introduced to by way of the Chinese Confucian Scholars, thousands of years ago), this sense of filial piety in action, and obeissance to popular demand is something that is quite intrinsic to East-Asian (namely Confucian societies; ergo. China, Japan, Korea and to an extent, Vietnam..)

The notion of honor seen in the Korean politicians and campaigners should be exported to the Philippines.

Question lang, is vote buying as prolific in Korea (or does it even exist at all?) as it does in the Philippines?

Thanks, Mr. Lagunay.

In regards the original question, I believe that it shouldn't matter if he or she is a lawyer or a physician. But for me, I think one who can best govern would be one who has administrative skills (a nursing director, principal, teacher (educator),  doctor , public policy maker, manager, an attorney) can be one.

The secret to a successful political career is knowing what you believe in and sticking by the decision (to best represent the will of the constituency who elected you), good oratory skills, proficiency in administration and managing the bureaucratic red tape, working as a team, transparency in all that you do in regards to public office. And most of all, To remain calm under fire.

We should not dwell so much on who hates us and what not, if you have a clear conscience and you know that what you did and said was justified, that is all that matters.

Because in the end, guys, it is the Principle that matters, and not so much in what 'he/she said'. People will always talk, thats a given, but being able to hold your ground and defend a principle and being able to sleep soundly at night because of a clear conscience...that's the best.

Ang differensiya ani, is that some lawyers will speak a lie, and tell a lie,..

The doctor is forbidden to lie to patients and is bound by Hippa Laws, The Oath, and Ethics Rules and Regs.
(the doctor who willfully falsifies information and deliberately lies risks the removal of his medical practice, termination of his occupation, and the jeopardizing of 12+ years of professional studies/training........)

hehe, everyone in medicine is proceeding with an additional degree. I just think that Doctors / Medical Students have an innate sadist in them, and I speak as a Medical Intern. We love to torture ourselves with studies and extensive 'training'. I once was in a review with a Neuro-Surgeon from the Middle East, this man complained about how much time it took him to finish and that as soon as he finished the American Boards, he would like to practice as soon as possible (he used his kids and family as pretense to work as soon as possible,..again understandable). After the review course, he joked (and was being serious): "I would like to later specialize in Gastroenterology, as i always wanted to be one, not surgery...."

Note: gastroenterology supraspecialty fellowship is another 3-4 years (depending on location, but 4 years is average).

My Preceptor for Pathology, Dr. Barone, has his M.D, but also has his MBA, and a Master's in Communication.

There is no such thing as a "im just a doctor". Doctors now-a-days in the United States are very well-rounded professionals.

I have good marksmanship but am really slow in drawing my weapon, and I am  left eye dominant and a right hand shooter.  However,  I already fixed that, I shoot with both my eyes open. Sometimes our range will not allowed us to fire from the holster. I hate doing indoor actually.

Marksmanship, is what counts the most. An example is my sister, she is an innate sharpshooter (in terms of academics, and in terms of shooting, haha).

It takes her a while to shoot, but her shots are dead-on accurate, even on the 100, to 300 yard range. (no scopes used, btw).

~

In battlefield tactics, it is the sniper who holds the higher ground. A well-hidden sharshooter sniper may not fire as rapidly as a platoon of assault troops (armed with rifles), but for sure, a sniper can wipe out an entire platoon..with his/her accuracy.

Moral: It's not the quantity, its the quality that counts...

There is no such thing as a Physician-Surgeon who does not know Law.

Aside from our extensive training in Medical School Proper (4 years): the first two years are set in understanding sold basic medical science and proficiency in Morals and Ethics Classes, and a class on integrative Medicine and Law, which teaches and elaborates what the power of the Physician is and how it applies to the population. As the Guardians of Society, the Physician is the shepherd of Health Care, the role of the Physician-Surgeon is increasing and his awareness on Laws that affect his patients, his powers, is quite extensive. The latter two (our 3rd and 4th years) are spent in the clinical setting in the understanding and implementation of: General Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and numerous specialty elective. And throughout this, our proficiency in law must be understood and expected. Following Medicine Proper, the Physician goes further Medical-Legal understanding throughout his Residency years (3-5 years), and then later on to proceed with Supra-Specialty Training.

Ours is the profession of 'never-ending studying, reading, discussing...'

Here in the United States, it is required that all Medical Students, Medical Interns have proficiency in the Law, as we are tested not only on medical science, but also on Legal prerogatives and its relation to Medicine.

Physicians are not only doctors of medicine, but some go on to become professors of medicine, teachers of health science, business owners, research scientists, as well as politics.

Just long story.....but I am challenged to master my gun, my pulse, my trigger, my sight and timing...

That's what counts, Lady Wolf, the essence of mastering the art of shooting (or any hobby at that--in this case, shooting--being an expensive hobby) and perfecting the form. My Uncle is actually the one that introduced me to shooting, and it takes credible time and patience to shoot the right way (responsibly, that is), and to dominate the shot. One thing that I realized and found out about shooting is that its how we control our breathing, perfect aim.

As for cost of shells, my Uncle Steve actually solved this by making his own cartridges.

Keep on shooting, Lady Wolf, and keep on perfecting your goals. For sure, you will attain them.

Our Daily Bread

In her fascinating book Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise, Ruth Reichl reflects on her 6 years as a New York Times restaurant critic. Because she was the most influential critic in the country, top restaurants posted her photograph so their employees could recognize her. Hoping to earn a high rating in the New York Times, the staff intended to provide her with their top service and best cuisine.

In response, Reichl developed a clever strategy. Hoping to be treated as a regular patron, she disguised herself. On one occasion, she dressed up as an old woman. The restaurant made her wait a long time to be seated and then was unresponsive to her requests.

In the early church, James spoke out against favoritism: “[If] you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, ‘You sit here in a good place,’ and say to the poor man, ‘You stand there,’ or, ‘Sit here at my footstool,’ have you not shown partiality among yourselves?” (2:3-4).

When people attend our churches, are they treated impartially? Or do we show favoritism to the wealthy or elite? God calls us to show concern for and interest in all people, regardless of their social status. Let’s welcome all to join us in worshiping the King!

Dear Lord, You welcomed us into Your kingdom, not because of who we are but because of who You areâ€" our loving and merciful God. Help us to open our arms of fellowship to all who enter in. Amen.

God lets us into His fellowship. Who are we to keep others out?

There was a message that The Lord tells us, in regards to loving one another, and forgiving one another as he forgives us. Sure it is hard to do sometimes (for some of the trespasses against us are great), but we can try to forgive. And try to be civil with them.
He forgave us , so much that he died for us in Calvary. What he expects from us is not that much..in comparison to what he did for us..

So with that said, lets keep on loving one another, let the past be the past and start a new. Beautiful, He is....

Poems and Poets / Ode To Old Woman
June 02, 2010, 10:26:24 AM
by: Lorenzo L.

Lady who i did meet that day in church
without hesitation, goodness was surely in you.
Come before the throne of Glory
I knelt in silence for sin abiding needing
sense of cleansing
for sense of guilt not coming to the house of goodness
this sense of guilt of not coming to church took hold of me
and i was ashamed
to kneel before the Holy One.

But in all of His wisdom and glory, i am reminded, that all of my thoughts of guilt was washed
cleansed away.

For He read my thoughts , the very voice within the heart of mine
calling me to, beckoning me to visit His Holy Place
As i knelt in guilt, and looking searching for the right words to pray
for the right thoughts to release,

there you came, out of your praying and walked towards the door, and saw me, a sinner, in my silence
You did not even know me, or saw me , or ever talked to me before, but you came..
anyway
sat
anyway
talked anway

With voice as soft in clement melody
you said to me
~Do you want me to pray with you?

I did not know how to react, as you were unexpected, as was your offer
~Yes, i would like that.

You sat down, with the age wrinkles of your face,
your Chaplet of the Holy Eucharist, Your red rosary, humbling me.
As i prayed , you prayed as well, praying with me, together, tho you knew me not, saw me not before that day,
you offered anyway.

And before you left, you said something to me,
that will forever be etched in my soul.
"He Loves You....just know that"

Thank you, old woman, for sure, you are an angel.
I am sure.

I had my sister scout the enemy perimeter with a partner in the guise of "playing skip it". She came back and told us of the enemy numerical strength; their location, and the location of the flag.

We implemented a flank attack.

Ang lesson what my father told me when i was younger was this: "find the strengths in any situation...."

Haha. Hmm, I was the captain of our firing team. It was a war-game that we used to play. The goal of the game was to charge the other team and capture their flag and bring it to our base; no more than 15 soldiers per team. I remember having lieutenants (2 of them) and the rest followed orders as dictated. The 1st lieutenant's role was to charge the 1st wave, the 2nd lieutenant's role was to command the 2nd wave. The tactical strategem was always thrilling when the 1st wave was wiped out, I would holler to my lieutenant to 'LEAD THE 2ND WAVE!'

And if all was lost, I charged with them, "FORWARD!"

haha, after recess, our teacher asked why we were tachycardic and tachypnic a well as sweating. We just laughed it off.

Very nice. The G is smooth like a Caddy; the Magnum is rough, the trick is shooting it with one hand (my Uncle Steve taught me a trick to shoot it the right way).

There is nothing like shooting a gun. A surge of testosterone comes over you. My sister is actually a sharpshooter; she's great with rifles and accurate with them. I think the last time we were there she unloaded about 15 Yugoslavian SKS clips, 5 or so M16 clips.

I joked with her, "You should have been a sniper..."

She replied, "Yea, i should've..."
