Philippine Daily News / Stress and the Filipinos
June 27, 2007, 07:41:31 PM
Sure, Filipinos are resilient, but this doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t feel stressed.

by MICHAEL L. TAN

HOW DO we say we're stressed in Filipino?

We don't. Well, at least not in a way that we would in English: I am stressed. It just doesn't work out; we don't, as far as I know, have a word in any of our Philippine languages for stress and being stressed.

But that doesn't mean we Filipinos don't ever experience stress. We feel it all the time and we see it producing illnesses, both physical and mental, both fleeting (as in having to run to the toilet) and serious, life-threatening ones. Because stress affects the body's immune system, we can say all ailments are in one way or another stress-related, from asthma to singaw (canker sores), to cardiovascular ailments and even infectious diseases.

There's also a tendency to dismiss stress-related illnesses as "psychological," and that these are self-limiting, easily resolved. The fact is that stress can so overwhelm people that they lapse into depression, resorting to destructive behavior, directed toward the self, or toward others.

The drug companies, especially those producing vitamins, have tried to cash in, pushing their products through advertisements showing stressed people and dangling promises: with our product, you can meet the many stresses of life, and of the world, and survive without falling ill. One vitamin has even gone to the extent of incorporating the word "stress" into its brand name.

But doctors â€" at least reputable ones â€" will tell you that medicines are of limited use for handling stress. Vitamins can help you to deal with the harmful chemicals produced in the body that come after stress, but as long as you don't deal with the stress itself, you eventually lose out.

Besides the vitamin ads, the media bombard us with all kinds of articles about, and ads for, New Age therapies that supposedly help us deal with stress â€" to name a few, yoga and meditation, spas offering massage and aromatherapy, soothing music interspersed with sounds of birds and frogs. But these are often expensive fads with exaggerated claims.

Not enough's being done to understanding stress in its local context, yet stress is mediated through culture: from the very nature of the stressors, to the ways we respond to the stress. Understanding this local context might help us develop more culturally appropriate, and therefore more effective, ways to deal with stress.

STRESSORS ARE not universal. For example, we say "noise" is stressful, but what exactly is noise?

Culturally, we have different thresholds for these sounds. I have a nephew and a niece who were born and bred in Canada, and they find the Philippines too "noisy": the jeepneys, the arcade games in malls, even the way people talk. Yet they have no problems tuning into hard rock music on their iPods.

My nephew and niece also find crowds stressful; yet a Filipino sees a crowd and is delighted, "Uy, masaya." Westerners crave privacy; the Filipino is stressed by solitude. We're not alone, of course, in finding pleasure in crowds and camaraderie. Culture adapts to circumstances and we are only one of many countries with large dense populations that have learned to live with the maddening crowds, complete with the noise. The Chinese, for example, refer to "merriment" as re nao, the words for "hot" and "noisy."

While we enjoy noise, we're quite sensitive to olfactory assaults. Filipinos will claim some odors are so bad they cause a stomachache. We sniff everything, from food to lovers, and the smells we find good, we tend to indulge to an excess. No wonder aromatherapy's taken off in the Philippines, as did those terrible car fresheners and deodorizers.

Beyond these sensory stresses, we Filipinos do face many sources of stress, around work and livelihood mainly. Farmers worry about drought and typhoons; urbanites go berserk with tyrannical bosses and vicious gossipy office-mates.

Rural or urban, we all face the stresses of family, perhaps more so than in Western countries. We like to say we are family-oriented, with relatives always on hand to help out. But the extended Filipino family can be stressful too, with all its obligations. Overseas workers have a particularly difficult time with all the expectations family members have back home. I've met Filipinos overseas, from Hong Kong domestic workers to physicians in the United States, who postpone returning home for years because they dread the jeepneyloads of relatives waiting for pasalubong (gifts).

But the balikbayan in California has the advantage of distance. The poor migrants who go from impoverished rural areas to work in big cities face even greater stress from family relations, who can easily contact their now "rich" urban cousins for a share of the pittance these earn in the city.

TAGBILARAN CITY, Philippines -- Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado has offered a P50,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of Hilario Diola, the prime suspect in the killing of provincial Bayan Muna (People First) leader Mario Auxillo.

The governor made the offer Tuesday morning during a conference with Bayan Muna Representative Satur Ocampo, local leaders of cause-oriented groups and Bohol police director Senior Superintendent Edgardo Ingking at the Governor's Mansion.

Ocampo and Ingking welcomed the governor's move as the suspect remains at large despite seven witnesses having positively identified him as Auxillo’s alleged killer.

"These so-called political killings have blemished our country's reputation. We could not countenance the slaying of militant leaders," said Aumentado.

Last year, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan or New Patriotic Alliance) provincial chair Victor Olayvar was gunned down while he was on his way to a meeting with local peasants. Olayvar's killers remained unidentified and a case filed by the police was dismissed for lack of evidence.

Ocampo flew in from Manila on Tuesday to lead a tribute for Auxillo in Trinidad, the slain activist's hometown where he was buried Tuesday afternoon.

With the cash reward and the filing of the case against Auxillo's assailant, Ocampo said "the Auxillo slay is at least partially solved."

Aumentado urged Ingking for a "proper closure" to "end speculations" about the peasant leader's murder as the PNP already had a strong case based on the testimonies of three credible witnesses.

Bayan Muna in Central Visayas has accused the military of hiding the suspect in the killing of Auxillo.

In Cebu City, the left-wing party list’s Central Visayas coordinator Arman Perez chided the Bohol police for letting a week pass without being able to catch Diola, an alleged member of the anti-communist organization Alimaong.

He said the Alimaong Holy Warriors were organized by a certain Master Sergeant Anthony Tabada.

Perez and about 80 activists held a mock burial on Tuesday for Auxillo at the headquarters of the Police Regional office (PRO 7) in Cebu City to demand justice.

Colonel Jessie Dellosa, commander of the 302nd Brigade based in Carmen, Bohol, has denied allegations Diola is under their protection.

Dellosa said he talked to Tabada, who admitted that he organized the Alimaong group to help the indigenous people in Bohol. Tabada also confirmed that Diola was a member, Dellosa said.

According to Dellosa, the military is not involved in the Alimaong, an initiative of Tabada who has gone on absence without leave.

Meanwhile, Ingking briefed Ocampo on the progress of the manhunt and the status of the case filed against the suspect.

Ingking said the police were trying to convince the suspect's wife to disclose the whereabouts of her husband as there were reports Diola was spotted at least twice going to their house after the killing.

Only Diola knows the motive for killing Auxillo since several witnesses saw the two engaged in "a serious conversation" for about 20 minutes before the shooting, Ingking said.

Diola shot Auxillo in full view of many witnesses.

However, the two were known friends.

Jokes and Humor / Mental Patients
June 27, 2007, 12:31:02 AM

Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the Director of Nursing became aware of Edna's heroic act, she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged; since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in his bathroom with the belt of his robe right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead!" Edna replied, "He didn't hang himself; I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?"

LYNWOOD, Califonia -- Paris Hilton left jail Tuesday after a bizarre, three-week stay in which the hotel heiress was briefly released to her Hollywood Hills home, then sent screaming and crying back to a county lockup.

The 26-year-old celebutante walked out of the all-women's jail in Lynwood to an enormous crowd of cameras and reporters after midnight. She had checked into the jail, largely avoiding the spotlight, late June 3 after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards.

Hilton smiled broadly as she left the jail. It wasn't immediately clear where she was going.

Hilton will complete her probation in March 2009 as long as she keeps her driver's license current and doesn't break any laws. She can reduce that time by 12 months if she does community service that could include a public-service announcement, the city attorney's office has said.

Hilton was sent to jail after she repeatedly violated probation on alcohol-related reckless driving charges by driving on a suspended license.

MANILA, Philippines -- A Filipina domestic worker in Doha, Qatar died of unknown cause last week while another overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Saudi Arabia was arrested for allegedly killing his employer, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.

In her report to the home office, Charge d'Affaires Rosario Lemque of the Philippine Embassy in Doha, identified the dead OFW as Melissa Leseniana.

She said the June 22 death is being investigated by Qatari authorities, who are holding Leseniana's employer in custody.

Lemque said as soon as Leseniana's death was communicated to her office, she sent assistance-to-nationals officers to the Hamad Hospital Morgue to look at the body. However, embassy officials were not allowed to take photographs by morgue officials as the case is still under investigation, her report said.

Lemque promised to follow up on the case and report on the developments.

In Saudi Arabia, OFW Joven Esteva, was arrested for allegedly killing his employer, Philippine Ambassador to the kingdom Antonio Villamor said in his report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo.

Esteva, a family driver, was taken into police custody on June 3, Villamor said.

After asking the assistance of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Philippine embassy officials are scheduled to visit Esteva on June 27 at the Malaz Central Jail in Riyadh where he is detained.

Villamor assured the secretary that the embassy will provide all the needed assistance to Esteva, including the services of a Saudi lawyer, and will report any new development on the case.

In both cases, the DFA refused to give details until official reports are in.

Lumine, I've not heard the word "pooreigners". Filipinos are really creative in concocting new words. I am thinking of submitting this word to the Oxford Dictionary Committee.

grabeha no?

i was almost a victim of the modus operandi of an officer at NSO-Manila when i got an authenticated copy of my marriage contract. i was asked to report at 2 pm but i was the last to be entertained at 7pm. she said that i must be grateful that she was able to fix the inconsistency of the local registrar's secretary's signature. she showed me two papers showing the inconsistency daw in a bit secluded place. i started to smell something fishy when she kept telling me that i had to be grateful. i said my sincere "thank you" to her. she kept showing to me the papers back to back.

sensing that i wouldn't give in, she gave me her contact numbers because as she said, just in case i needed help. she even asked me where my belgian husband was, etc.

"It's none of your business!" i told myself.

vexation started to creep in my system, but thanked God, her officemate came and told her that they would go home already.

Maricel has the edge, Lumine because she can use both hands in typing. Unlike you, your other hand is busy with your handsome and adorable tot. But on second thought, maybe Maricel's other hand could be busy, too. I'd rather not think what it will be busy about. It's hard speculating. Let's just wait for Maricel's rebuttal come Sunday.

mao jud! maricel has the edge. mag-overtime sya sa iya mga absences.

Jokes and Humor / Birth Control Pills
June 22, 2007, 09:40:17 PM
An elderly woman went into the doctor's office. When the doctor asked why she was there, she replied, "I'd like to have some birth control pills."
Taken aback, the doctor thought for a minute and then said, "Excuse me, Mrs. Smith, but you're 75 years old. What possible use could you have for birth control pills?"
The woman responded, "They help me sleep better."
The doctor thought some more and continued, "How in the world do birth control pills help you to sleep?"
The woman said, "I put them in my granddaughter's orange juice and I sleep better at night."

Scars of Love
-- Author Unknown

Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he went.

He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward the shore. His mother in the house was looking out the window saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In utter fear, she ran toward the water, yelling to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. From the dock, the mother grabbed her little boy by the arms just as the alligator snatched his legs. That began an incredible tug-of-war between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother was much too passionate to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard er screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the alligator.

Remarkably, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were extremely scarred by the vicious attack of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.

The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy after the trauma, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted his pant legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter, "But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."

You and I can identify with that little boy. We have scars, too. Not from an alligator, but the scars of a painful past. Some of those scars are unsightly and have caused us deep regret. But, some wounds, my friend, are because God has refused to let go. In the midst of your struggle. He's been there holding on to you.

The Scripture teaches that God loves you. You are a child of God. He wants to protect you and provide for you in every way. But sometimes we foolishly wade into dangerous situations, not knowing what lies ahead. The swimming hole of life is filled with peril - and we forget that the enemy is waiting to attack. That's when the tug-of-war begins - and if you have the scars of His love on your arms be very, very grateful. He did not and will not ever let you go.

Never judge another person's scars, because you don't know how they were made.
