And the answers are...

1. A: tongue

A giraffe uses its long blue tongue for ear cleaning. It is an easy task for a giraffe as their tongues are almost two feet long!

2. B: knees

Crickets hear with their knees! Each “ear” is a tiny hole with a thin tight covering located under each knee.

3. False.

An elephant uses its trunk to squirt water into its mouth. The trunk is primarily a breathing and smelling organ, in addition to a wonderfully adept “hand-arm.”

4. C: By blinking

As weird as that sounds, a bullfrog actually swallows its food by blinking its bulging eyeballs. This pushes the bulbous eyeballs down on the top of its mouth, which forces food down the throat.

5. B: Thumbs

Pandas have front paws equipped with extra wrist bones that act like thumbs. They use these thumbs to grip tightly onto their favorite food, bamboo.

6. D: 20,000

Teeth are obviously an essential part of any shark worth his salt. These teeth do not grow in a single row, like human teeth, but rather in multiple rows. New rows grow in behind the older rows.

7. True

With the exception of Richard Scary’s top-hat wearing earthworm character, Lowly, the common earthworm cannot see, hear or smell, but it has an acute sense of touch. Even without the aforementioned senses that humans rely on, the little earthworm can tell between dark and light, wet and dry, hard and soft and hot and cold.

8. C: A small car

Nearly everything about the blue whale is super-sized. It weighs as much as 25 elephants, it is as long as three buses and as wide as a 2-story building!  Nearly 50 people could stand on a blue whale’s tongue â€" if the whale would let them (highly unlikely and please do not try this at home).

9. True

The albatross, while not so graceful on land, is built for the skies. It can glide for months at sea by just catching one wind current after another. It can even sleep in the air.

10. False

A beaver’s bright orange teeth actually never stop growing, similar to our fingernails. Unlike many other mammals, beavers’ bodies also keep growing throughout their entire lifetime. They just keep getting longer and heavier until they reach old age and die, which if they are lucky is about twelve years.

Did any of these answers surprise you?  Did you know most, if not all, of the answers?

Weird and Extreme / Re: Kurt Godel
April 05, 2013, 04:23:52 PM
Very, very smart people are known to have quirks and eccentricities, in case you were unaware, and Godel was no exception. Later in his life he became exceedingly paranoid, and specifically became afraid that people were trying to poison him. As such, he refused to eat food prepared by anyone other than his wifeâ€"ever. With no exceptions. You may see where this is going.

When Godel’s wife became ill and was hospitalized for six months, he literally wasted away. He died on January 14, 1978, weighing all of 65 pounds; the death certificate listed the cause of death as, “malnutrition and inanition caused by personality disturbance”, which is kind of a more formal way to say that he died of being a stubborn bastard. -- http://listverse.com/

As you can see by the above picture of him chumming around with Albert Einstein, Kurt Godel was a very, very smart man. His Incompleteness Theorem changed the science community’s understanding of logic, he has a mathematical function (Godel numbering) named after him, and lookâ€"up there. With Einstein, palling around.

The movie highlighted that horsemeat is more prevalent across Europe than previous thought. Out of 5,000 samples taken from English public school lunches, senior centers and restaurants, 44 came back positive for horsemeat.

Earlier this year, in Ireland, a surprise DNA study showed that about one-third of “beef” burgers in the shamrock country contained at least trace amounts of horsemeat. Another product, France’s Comigel beef lasagna, had zero beef and 100% horsemeat. The French company quickly blamed the “complex supply chain stretching from its Luxembourg factory to Dutch and Cypriot middlemen to Romanian horse butchers.”

Hmmmm, maybe depending on “complex” supply chains is not a good idea in the first place.  Your local farmers are starting to look a lot more appealing, aren’t they?

The so-called rogue meat scandal has resulted in European supermarkets scrambling to take popular brands â€" such as Nestle of Switzerland, and Bird’s Eye of Britainâ€" off the shelves, and restaurants, no doubt, are cleaning-up their act, at least temporarily.

As I write this article, I recall being in London last year and eating an Indian chicken dish that decidedly didn’t taste like chicken. I wrote it off as being an “odd” chicken, but now looking back, it makes my stomach lurch to think about what I was eating. Combine mystery meat scandals with the scandalous way many cows, pigs, chickens and sheep are brutally commodified in the industrial food chain and it is truly a wonder that any of us comfortably consume meat at all.  Personally, I still eat meat, but only a few times a week, and I try to stick with organic/free range and locally raised animals. Most days, my family is meat-free, but really, with the stomach lurching I am feeling now, I think it will be a while before we order a meat dish again.

Cherise Udell / March 28, 2013 / 2:01 pm

In the aftermath of the European horsemeat scandal, a private investigation was launched in London that randomly tested the DNA of menu items being served as take-out across the city. But instead of finding just more horsemeat (which they did), the investigators stumbled upon a variety of dubiously mixed meat dishes, as well as a mystery meat.

The mystery meat dish in question, listed as a spicy lamb curry, turned out NOT to be lamb, but instead some unidentified substitute. It is definitely meat, but no one knows what type of meat â€" and the restaurant is not shedding any light on the matter. DNA analysis has now ruled out beef, chicken, pork, goat, horse and even human flesh. So what is left? Cat? Dog? Rat? Guinea Pig? Pigeon?

This unsavory story (that is likely to create a new wave of vegetarians!) was recently unveiled in a BBC3 documentary, The Horsemeat Banquet. The show’s spokesperson said, “just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, the results came in for an Indian lamb curry. At this moment, the lab has not been able to identify which animal this meat came from.”

The documentary filmmakers made other grim discoveries such as:

A “beef burger” that contained no beef apart from blood and heart.

A black bean sauce “beef dish” that contained mainly chicken blood and scraps and very little detectable beef.

The only fast food that lived up to its name entirely was ironically the lamb doner kabab. In all tests this menu item was pure lamb.

BENIGNO AQUINO III, PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES: Bakit mo aayusin kung ayos?
(Why fix what isn't broken? Why change if it's good? We're not saying anything negative about the opponents of Mayor Lim but its clear that with his governance of Manila, we have never had a hard time coordinating with him and he has put service of the country above all else)

The rally of Team PNoy gathers over 7,000 supporters clad in yellow but it is nowhere close to "Easterada Sunday," the event of Estrada and his slate a day earlier with 75,000 attendees.

Estrada is allied with the opposition, the United Nationalist Alliance.

But the number that matters is the 950,000 registered voters.

Will the city choose an insanely popular former president who finished second to Aquino in 2010, or will it side with a well-loved sitting President and his bet?

Manila isn't the only thing at stake.

A Lim victory is an important political statement for the President, symbolic of his influence not just in the next 3 years but arguably over the 2016 presidential elections.  - Rappler.com
#27214
The war over Manila is expected to be one of the hottest local races come May.

Estrada says he will restore Manila's glory if elected, but Lim is bent on serving his third and final term.

The 83-year-old Lim is confident of his chances and boasts of President Benigno Aquino III's endorsement.

Lim, a longtime ally of the Aquino family, enjoys the President's support after the former supported his mother's presidency.

Aquino says Lim proved his loyalty the people when he sided with his mother over dictator Ferdinand Marcos during the People Power Revolution.

He does not criticize Lim's opponents but makes it clear he trusts the re-electionist.
#27215
On the sidelines, he says Estrada must be drunk to think Manila has decayed under his rule.

(Maybe he's tipsy if he's saying those things. He has so many problems with Manila but you yourselves see the high rise buildings. Is that rotting?)

He outlines his platforms, and refutes all of Estrada's points, saying he has provided Manilenos with accessible education and healthcare.

(We're the only one with 6 hospitals in over 140 cities in the whole country. Two of our colleges are free, zero tuition, free reigstration, registration, library, laboratory, athletics, none, zero, not a single cent. Your children witll finish college and become professionals)

MANILA, Philippines - Incumbent Manila mayor Alfredo Lim responds to attacks from his rivals during his campaign launch for re-election.

He calls Estrada a liar, a drunk and a plunderer.

ALFREDO LIM, MANILA MAYOR: Nasintensiyahan ba yan ng Sangidanbayan? Anong sintensiya? Habang buhay. At isauli daw yung pera, yung salapi na kinuha sa taong bayan.

(Was he sentenced by Sandiganbayan? What was the sentence? For life. And return the money, the money stolen from the people)

Both the scorching sun and the fiery words make Mayor Alfredo Lim's proclamation rally a heated affair.

Lim doesn't hold back from slamming former president Joseph Estrada who is running against him for mayor of the country's capital.

On stage, he calls Estrada a liar.

2016 and full circle

During the speeches of both local and senatorial UNA bets, the candidates all praised Binay’s leadership in Makati, and expressed support for his plan to seek the presidency in 2016.

In his speech, the Vice President waxed nostalgic, recalling that it was in Olympia, Makati, where he spoke of his presidential ambitions in the 1990s.

“Sinabi ko pagtulung-tulungan natin, pagagandahin natin ang Makati, at ang Makati ang ituturo natin ‘pag nilunsad ang aking pagkakandito pagkapangulo.” (I said let’s help each other improve Makati, and we will point to Makati when I launch my presidential candidacy).

Binay then cited services his family’s leadership pushed for in Makati like cash gifts for senior citizens, and the construction of hospitals.

“Nangampanya [ako dito noon] bilang pangalawang pangulo. Ngayong gabi, meron hong ‘di makapaniwala, ‘di makatulog kasi ang nakaharap sa kanila ngayon, si Jojo Binay, number two sa buong Pilipinas.” (I campaigned here before for vice president. Tonight, there are those who cannot believe, cannot sleep because the one facing them is Jojo Binay, the number two official of the Philippines).

Binay capped the night by summing up his campaign pitch for his children and candidates: “Damdaming Makati, tatak Binay.” (The heart of Makati, the Binay brand). â€" Rappler.com

While Mayor Binay is not expecting a major challenge to his re-election, he admitted that the race is heated in the vice mayoral level.

Binay is fielding running mate Marjorie de Veyra against ally-turned-rival Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Pena of the ruling Liberal Party.

Both the mayor and the vice president endorsed De Veyra in the rally, praising her work as former city administrator and head of the Makati Social Welfare Department, and her loyalty to the Binay family.

Besides De Veyra, UNA candidates in Makati include re-electionist 1st District Rep Monique Lagdameo, and majority of the incumbent councilors seeking re-election.

UNA sweep in Makati?

With the family’s hold on Makati politics, Mayor Binay and Nancy Binay said a complete victory for UNA’s 9 senatorial candidates in the city is not far-fetched.

Known as the country’s financial district, Makati has nearly 400,000 registered voters.

“My father’s endorsement is a big factor. We had a [local] election where we won straight 12-0 in both districts and hopefully we can replicate that with UNA’s senatorial slate for a 9-0 victory,” Nancy said.

She said UNA’s allies in Makati will be able to focus on helping the senatorial slate because his brother is almost assured of victory.

Independent candidate lawyer Renato Bondol is Mayor Binay’s lone challenger. Another independent candidate, Joel Sarza, is running against his sister, Rep Abigail Binay.

“More or less, we already [have the machinery for UNA] because my brother’s rival is not that much of a heavyweight this elections,” said Nancy.

Bondal, a former barangay chairman, said he is running against Mayor Binay to give voters “an option for change.”

Asked about this statement, Nancy said, “At the end of the day, it’s the will of the people. We are not forcing anyone. The elections where our family members won were clean and honest.”
#27220
In an interview with Rappler, Mayor Binay also said having 4 Binays in government is not a consolidation of power.

“Even if my two sisters win, one congresswoman and one senator, it doesn’t mean we already hold Congress. My siblings will be just two out of many lawmakers. It doesn’t mean we can manipulate the Senate and Congress,” he said.

Mayor Binay added: “They will be there, represent the people and use Makati as a model. That’s what we always say, ‘If we did it in Makati, we can do it in the entire country.’”

FAMILY HUDDLE. Vice President Jejomar Binay talks to daughter senatorial bet Nancy Binay before taking the podium at the UNA proclamation rally in Makati.
#27221
Binay endorsed his eldest daughter to his long-time constituents. He was mayor of Makati for over 20 years. His wife, Elenita, became mayor for 3 years when he was sitting out his term limit.

“Meron na tayong maipagmamalaki. Ang Makati, may senador na ngayon.” (We already have something to boast of. Makati will now have a senator.)

The Vice President also pushed for the candidacy of his two other children. He praised Mayor Binay’s leadership, saying “the son is better than the father.” He also commended Rep Binay for being deputy majority leader in the House.

“They only make an issue out of dynasties in the context of violence and cheating and bad practices in politics, but in a clean and honest election, why not allow the people to vote,” Binay said in Filipino.

The proclamation rally was a family reunion of sorts for the Binay clan, with the vice president even starting his speech by introducing each of his grandchildren on stage.
#27222
In his speech, Binay made a pitch for national and local candidates of the opposition United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) but devoted time to campaign for his children. With Nancy’s accidental candidacy, the Binays face criticism of expanding their dynasty from Makati to the national scene.

The Vice President, though, sought to address the charge, first by citing Nancy’s popularity.

“Si Nancy na hinahamak-hamak nila, ito ay nung pinaplano-plano, noong gustong patakbuhin, ang unang survey 19%. Tapos ako noong makalaban ko si Mar Roxas, 54% against 2%. Kada survey, pataas nang pataas hanggang sa manalo ako. Biro 'nyo, 54-2, si Nancy 19%,” the Vice President said.

(Nancy, who they have been criticizing, started out in surveys with a score of 19%. When I ran against Mar Roxas in the 2010 vice presidential race, he started 54% against my 2%. In every survey, I went up until I won. Imagine, 54-2 but Nancy is already at 19%.)

THE PATRIARCH. Vice President Jejomar Binay defends his 3 children seeking public office, saying they have done him and Makati proud.

MANILA, Philippines â€" A senator, a congresswoman, a mayor, and the country’s vice president will likely share one last name after the May polls: Binay.

Still, Makati’s political family is unapologetic for fielding 3 candidates. The patriarch, Vice President Jejomar Binay, even hailed his children as a source of pride.

Binay led the proclamation rally of his son, re-electionist Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, on Wednesday, April 3. Joining them on the campaign stage were two other Binays running for office: re-electionist Makati 2nd District Rep Mar-Len Abigail Binay-Campos, and senatorial bet Nancy Binay.

MANILA â€" Addressing a crowd of supporters in his hometown Makati on Wednesday, Vice President Jejomar Binay defended his family against criticisms that they are a political dynasty.

Binay, who has three children running for various positions in the 2013 elections, said at the proclamation rally of the United Nationalist Alliance’s (UNA) local candidates in Makati that it is not necessarily wrong to form a dynasty.

“Sa isang malinis at marangal na halalan, bakit naman hindi? Tutal tao naman ang bumoboto,” he said.

Aside from Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, who’s seeking reelection, other Binays running for office are Makati Rep. Abegail Binay and senatorial candidate Nancy Binay.

In an interview, Mayor Binay made the same point as his father’s.

“Yes, we’re a dynasty. We’re a dynasty of service,” he said.

During Wednesday’s rally, Vice President Binay praised his children, especially Mayor Binay.

“The son is better than the father. Magaling po si Junjun,” he said.

Vice President Binay called on residents in Makati to vote for all of UNA’s local candidates and 9 senatorial bets, who were all present at the rally.

He cited his and his children’s record as public servants in Makati, one of the richest cities in the country.

With a college degree under his belt, Villanueva is determined to move forward and is in fact excited to try "adventurous jobs that are surely out there."

He said he may pursue a career in IT but is also looking inclined to try his luck as an events host, a radio DJ or a music channel VJ.

Villanueva also hinted at giving a singing a shot, even as he remembered how his mother died while he was performing a song at a school program.

"The night before she died, I asked her what song I should sing in school. I don't remember the lyrics but she sang it to me; that was my best memory of her," Villanueva said.

He held on to such memories and resolved to see a better future, Villanueva said, adding that so should other Pinoys in similar situations.

"They should not think that they don't have money and instead build determination to not stay where they are right now," Villanueva said.

"They should not lose hope because, however cliche it may sound, everything happens for a reason," he added.
#27234
Young Filipinos in difficult circumstances as his, Villanueva said, should never feel desperate or helpless. "Maraming taong handang tumulong (Many are willing to help)," he said.

His aunts, for instance, put other students apart from him through school, Villanueva said, even as he urged needy students to "forget about pride."

Aside from his family, friends were also instrumental in helping him get by, Villanueva said.

He recalled how his friends in the dormitory often offered to share their food or pay for his meals without asking to be repaid.

More than filling his stomach, those simple acts of kindness reassured him that "life was worth living," Villanueva said.
#27235
Villanueva was 10 years old when he lost his mother, who took her own life after a series of nervous breakdowns.

His father died due to cardiac arrest in 2009, when Villanueva was an information technology freshman in Colegio San Juan de Letran Manila.

"At first it was hard. But as the days passed, I stopped thinking of it as a sad thing," Villanueva told Yahoo! Southeast Asia.

"Instead of thinking of my situation as a burden, I considered it as an inspiration to strive harder," he added.

Villanueva, who said he thought he would have to quit school to work after his dad died, said he owes much to his maternal aunts who supported his studies.

During his first year in college, Villanueva lived with his aunt in Pasig. He transferred to a dormitory near his school on his second year, however.

"The pension I got from my dad paid for the dorm fees, and I lived off the P600 a week I earned while working at my aunt's dance studio in Shangri-La," Villanueva said.
#27236
Little did Villanueva know that thousands of shares and likes later, he would be the one overwhelmed with touching and inspiring messages and expressions of support.

"Sobrang thankful ako sa maraming taong nagpaabot ng message nila sa akin online (I'm thankful to those who extended their messages online)," Villanueva said in a phone interview.

He even added that his friends think the widespread reaction to the photo he posted was his parents' way of showing him their love.

But if you think that treating the baldness might help protect the heart, think again, said Dr. Gregg Fonarow, a professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Whether you wear a toupee or use minoxidil, it’s not going to lower your heart disease risk,” Fonarow said. “The real issue is not baldness having a direct effect on the heart, but that it’s a warning of possible heart disease.”

Fonarow encourages men to view baldness as a risk factor, just like family history of heart disease or high blood pressure. And that means concentrating on a heart healthy lifestyle, getting plenty of exercise and eating a healthy diet, for example.

Dr. George Cotsarelis, a hair loss expert, suspects that the study might prompt more research into the mechanisms that drive balding.

“There are some really interesting questions here,” said Cotsarelis, a professor and chair of dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “There are some biological lessons we might learn from studying male pattern baldness.

“Just last month there was a study showing that African American men with male pattern baldness are more likely to get prostate cancer. This really suggests that something similar is going on in these different tissues. By studying male pattern baldness we might make inroads to lots of different diseases.”
#27240
The new findings weren’t a complete surprise to 59-year-old Jerry Blum. But he wishes that the study had come out years earlier.

Both Blum and his brother started balding in their 20s. By their 40s, both had developed clogged arteries and heart problems. Now each has been given a stent, a mesh tube designed to keep arteries open.

“When I was 21 and losing my hair I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is the end of the world,’” Blum told Dr. Nancy Snyderman, chief medical editor for NBC News. “Little did I know that it had become an indicator for my heart health. Had I known then what I know now I probably would have been more vigilant.”

To take a closer look at any possible connections between baldness and heart disease, Yamada and his colleagues pored through the medical literature searching for studies on hair loss and cardiovascular disease. The researchers found six large studies and pooled the data to come up with a bigger study, known as a meta-analysis, that included a total of 36,990 men.

The study found not only an increased risk of heart disease in older men, but also in men younger than 60. Among those men, baldness raised the risk of heart attack by a full 44 percent.

Currently no one â€" including the study’s authors â€" understands what baldness and heart disease have in common.

Balding men may have higher risk of heart attack, study finds
By Linda Carroll
NBC News correspondent
updated 4/3/2013 8:13:13 PM ET

Men who are losing their hair may have bigger worries than just their appearance. Baldness can raise a man’s risk of having a heart attack, a new study suggests.

And the more hair a man has lost, the greater the risk to his heart, according to the study published in the online journal BMJ Open.

Japanese researchers found that men who suffered hair loss from both the front and the crowns of their heads had a 69 percent higher risk of a non-fatal heart attack compared to those with a full head of hair.

Men who had just crown-top hair loss, or vertex baldness, were 52 percent more likely to have a heart attack compared to those with luxurious locks. While the researchers found a 22 percent higher risk in men with receding hairlines, but no other hair loss, that result wasn’t statistically significant.

The findings suggest that men who are losing their hair should head over to the doctor’s office and get  a check-up, concluded the research team, led by Dr. Tomohide Yamada, a researcher in the department of diabetes and metabolic diseases in the graduate school of medicine at the University of Tokyo.

Cardiovascular risk factors should be reviewed carefully in men with vertex baldness, especially younger men, and they probably should be encouraged to improve their cardiovascular risk profile, Yamada said.

“We recommend adapting a heart-healthy lifestyle that includes a low fat diet, exercise and less stress [since] classical coronary risk factors such as age, hypertension, dislipidaemia and smoking might influence both conditions," he said.

And although his boyfriend Matthew Quijano was initially shocked, he's accepted the mermen lifestyle. "When I first met Eric, I was introduced to the subject of mermaids, on our first date," he says."Your jaw just kind of drops and you're just like, 'wow.' When we go swimming I don't even see him because he swims off to his own little corner, it's all about getting away from the rest of the world…Sometimes we have to ask people what's with the scolding looks because they're just like, 'why is there a guy in a tail? It's supposed to be a girl,''' Quijano says, shrugging. "Haters gonna hate."

Papa : Unsa man bayut ka o dili? Tubag!
Anak (kahilakon): Bayut lageh koh pah!
Papa : Boang kah!

Giaksyonan na pud paglumos. Dugay-dugay jud sa ilawom sa tubig. Pagtunga:

In early 2010, specific research was conducted by a University of Texas at Austin that found almost 42 percent of Americans self-identify as ‘dog people’ versus only 12 percent who reported they are ‘cat people’. About 28 percent said ‘both’ and 15 percent said ‘neither’. Which means that according to this dude’s research, more people dislike both types of furry housepets than express a distinct cat preference.

Yet the internet widely prefers cats. Some of the most popular Internet memes are related to cats. The /b/, or ‘random’ section of popular image board 4chan, which is reputed to be a ‘den of festering evil’ by people who wince anxiously and mispronounce ‘4chan’ while chatting in office cubicles, once routinely created an entire ‘holiday’ devoted to posting cat pictures. As most common internet culture memes are derivatives, loosely, of things people did on 4chan three years prior, it is unsurprising that the ‘Caturday’ holiday became, like, ‘a thing’ for people who would self-identify as moderate to heavy internet users.

It similarly became popular to caption images with white block text in order to make them funnier; thanks to the unfortunately-named website ‘memegenerator.net’, images with white text on them from the internet became known as ‘memes’ even though ‘meme’ doesn’t mean ‘picture with white text on it’. Cat memes are generally the most popular type of captioned image; people go to websites such as ‘cute overload’, ‘icanhazcheezburger’, and, more recently, ‘cute boys with cats’ and, perhaps the most exciting of a million cat-related Tumblrs, ‘cashcats.biz,’ simply to view pictures of cute cats all day, with or without text thereupon.

Popular themes for internet cat pictures suggest that the cat is perplexed by his/her environment; the cat is demanding of something in a regal fashion [cats may often be implied to be ‘overlords’ or ruling-class characters from science-fiction movies]; the cat is excited to have succeeded at something while remaining oblivious to the practicality of his/her accomplishment; the cat has instructed someone, presumably the viewer, to explain a set of circumstances to it.

Images of dogs are much, much rarer, and are certainly not as widely celebrated. The few well-known dog memes portray the dog as a ridiculous character, often the victim of the cat; popular themes for widely-circulated dog photographs include mocking the dog for not enjoying a plate of vegetables, mocking the dog for making an unusual expression implied to be fear, confusion or strong distaste, or otherwise general amusement at the expense of the dog’s ‘dignity’.

By Maridol Ranoa-Bismark | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom â€" Mon, Mar 25, 2013

Now that Kris Aquino has resigned from all her shows, one of her options is going back to school and taking up law.

This, she said in an exclusive interview on “The Buzz” on Sunday,  March 24.

“I kept telling Atty. (Frank) Chavez (her lawyer) that I should have been a lawyer. At sabi niya, ‘you can still be one, it will take five years, even with your schedule.’ ‘Cause lahat ng pinagdaanan ko recently, I realized kung gaano kahalaga ang tamang batas para sa Pilipinas.”

Cat memes can be understood as modern icons that celebrate and worship the symbolic cat. They seem to emphasize how cats are like humans. But the unconscious message might be more profound. They might be about the way humans are like cats.

Perhaps we’re collectively celebrating the independence with which our Internet devices allow us to connect to others. The web allows us to be like felines, connecting on our own terms and at our own leisure.

Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David, Jr. said on Tuesday that he will not resign until all corrupt officials and employees of the agency are eliminated.

However, he told radio station DZRH during an interview that he would not be bothered if President Aquino removes him, saying “I will continue pursuing his marching order ridding the service of corruption.”

He said that despite the management's all out anti-corruption campaign some insiders still persist in doing under-the-table deals, which to them are normal things to do.

The BI has been under fire recently following a series of flights of local and foreign fugitives via the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and other ports, notably investment swindler Park Sung Jun and former Palawan Governor Joel Torres, the principal suspect in the slaying of an environmentalist.

The immigration chief admitted that some BI personnel are members of syndicates who facilitates the entry and exit of undesirable aliens, and are into the lucrative racket of  helping local fugitives escape to foreign lands.

He said the syndicate is made up of erring immigration people and personnel of other agencies assigned at international ports.

He mentioned an employee of the  transportation department who was seen in  closed-circuit television assisting Park in getting his boarding pass at the NAIA.

David said Korean police authorities have not shown any displeasure for the BI"s failure to capture Park as he was immediately arrested upon his arrival in Korea.

He said that the BI has been very cooperative on the requests of foreign governments to apprehend and deport  their wanted nationals hiding here.

According to  David, a total of 15 Korean fugitives  was arrested and deported during the past two years.

LGU Philippines / Estrada loses some allies to Lim
April 02, 2013, 02:54:43 PM
By Rio Rose Ribaya | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom â€" 18 hours ago

Former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada has officially lost several allies.

This, as reelectionist Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III and returning Senator Ma. Anna Consuelo "Jamby" Madrigal endorsed Estrada's close rival Alfredo Lim in the mayoral race in the city Manila.

At the sidelines of Lim's proclamation rally at Bonifacio Shrine in Manila, Pimentel vowed to support Lim even if he is not a voter in the city.

"The mere fact that I am here in the only local proclamation rally that I attended means that I am rooting for Mayor Lim," Pimentel told reporters.

Related story: Lim claims Cory 'not sorry' to Estrada

Pimentel, who left Estrada's United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) last year, said the incumbent mayor has been raising legitimate issues against Estrada.

In May 2012, Pimentel left UNA coalition after harboring grudge against the former chief executive, for accepting his nemesis, former Senator Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri, in his Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).

Estrada is the chairman emeritus of PMP, which formed official alliance with the Partidong Demokratikong Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) where he took leave as its president.

Madrigal, who won her first seat in the Senate with Estrada's backing under the slate of late Fernando Poe Jr, also expressed unconditional support for Lim.

Madrigal said Lim's good track record is needed to further develop the City of Manila. She also described the incumbent official as the only candidate pushing the “straight path” campaign of President Aquino.

Madrigal added that her close friend espouses the policy of "unang daan" instead of "tuwid na daan."

“Si Mayor Lim ay talagang matalik na kaibigan at maganda ang nagawa niya sa Metro Manila, marami dito ang libreng pag-aral ng mga bata at pagpapagamot ng mga maysakit. Marami siyang natulungan na mga tao kaya ikakampamya ko ang tuwid na daan,” Madrigal stressed.

Saying she still maintains her personal relationship with Estrada, Madrigal is confident the former president will not take it against her if she endorses Lim for the upcoming polls.

“Nagkita kami sa Baguio (ni Erap), nag-usap kami at iyung pagkakaibigan ng isang tao ay dapat i-separate sa politika. Mukha namang hindi siya magtatampo, lahat naman ng ito is nothing personal, only strictly politics,” Madrigal added.

Bohol is famous because of its natural attractions, unique culture, and abundant marine resources. But despite all of these, its fishermen still remain among the poorest in the Philippines.

In her report for the GMA News special series “Biyaheng Totoo,” Sherrie Ann Torres went to  Bantigue, one of Bohol’s smaller islands, to see for herself how the fishermen are affected by illegal fishing activities in the area.

Eugenio Abapo, a fisherman who has three children studying in elementary school, says he can’t even buy his own fishing net. His income is just enough to get his family through the day, and to cover the cost of his children’s education. On days when he doesn’t catch enough fish, he borrows rice and canned goods from the sari-sari store on credit.

According to the National Statistics and Coordination Board (NSCB), two out of every five fishermen are considered poor. This is equivalent to around 41.1 percent of all fishermen in the Philippines. Sadly, Mang Eugenio and most fishermen in Bohol belong to this segment.

Will their concerns be addressed by the country’s new batch of leaders to be elected this 2013?
