Vice President Jejomar Binay joined Thursday the Catholic faithful and the Filipino nation in welcoming the election of Pope Francis as the Bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic church.
â€Just like his namesake, Pope Francis has shown affinity with the poor, both preaching and practicing compassion for our less fortunate brothers and sisters,†Binay said in a press statement.
â€He reminds us that serving our fellowmen is a duty not only of the Church, but of all Catholics. As he begins his Papacy, we pray that he will lead the Church with wisdom, humility, compassion and grace,†Binay added.
Team PNoy re-electionist senator Loren Legarda joined fellow Catholics in rejoicing over the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new Pope early Thursday.
â€We should all pray for Pope Francis that he may accomplish his mission as Vicar of Christ and heal the wounds of division in the world,†said Legarda.
“The world is faced with many divisive issues and we find hope that Pope Francis will lead us to the path of reconciliation, respect, and continuous dialogue not only with our fellow Catholics and Christians but also with the members of other faith and religion that we may find unity even among our differences,†she added.
United Nationalist Alliance senatorial bet Mitos Magsaysay urged the faithful to pray for the newly chosen pope so he may lead the Church with wisdom and grace as his predecessors have done before him.
While Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was among those who were considered for the position, Magsaysay said that Filipinos should not feel put off by the fact that he was not chosen by his peers to lead the Church at this time.
“It was already a great honor for the world to see that Filipinos are being led by someone who is intelligent, articulate, compassionate and humble. All of the contenders are surely more than qualified for the position and surely, the other cardinals took a lot into consideration,†she said.
Team PNoy senatorial candidate Francis Escudero also joined the nation in prayer of thanks for the election of Pope Francis.
â€Like billions (sic) of Catholics around the world, I greet Pope Francis’ election with a great measure of hope and optimism because it signals a fresh start. For many Catholics, this beacon of hope and optimism could very well rekindle a faith scarred by scandals and controversies,†Escudero said.
â€I call on Catholics and Christians, and citizens of the world for that matter, to pray for His Holiness Pope Francis, that he may find the strength, courage, and humility, to steer our Church through her most turbulent times,†Escudero added.
“Together with my family, we join the entire Roman Catholics accross the world in extending our heartfelt congratulations and prayers for God’s blessings to the new Holy Father, Pope Francisâ€, UNA bet Juan Miguel Zubiri, a Marian devotee, said.
