Through many nations and over many seas having been
driven I come, poor brother, to (these) offerings,
that I might give (them) at last for the service of the dead
and I, in vain address ashes, unable to speak.
Since fortune has carried away your own self,
Alas, poor brother undeservingly taken away from me,
now however, not withstanding these things, by the ancient
custom of (our) parents
(these) offerings are handed over with sad service
Take them with much wetness from fraternal weeping
and for ever, brother, farewell and farewell.

Driven through many a nation, out over many an ocean,
I am now here for these last rites of passing,
To offer you, dead brother, the last gifts of the living,
To speak in vain at your unspeaking ash
Since bitter fortune barred me, stole you to a shadow,
Poor brother taken, cruelly taken, from me.
But now to celebrate grief in custom of our fathers
I bring small foods to you who starve below,
Small gifts damp with a brother's tears. Take them and this
Into eternity: hail and farewell.

Through many nations and many seas have I come
To carry out these wretched funeral rites, brother,
That at last I may give you this final gift in death
And that I might speak in vain to silent ashes.
Since fortune has borne you, yourself, away from me.
Oh, poor brother, snatched unfairly away from me,
Now, though, even these, which from antiquity and in the custom of our
parents, have been handed down, a gift of sadness in the rites, accept
them, flowing with many brotherly tears, And for eternity, my brother,
hail and farewell.

By ways remote and distant waters sped,
Brother, to thy sad grave-side am I come,
That I may give the last gifts to the dead,
And vainly parley with thine ashes dumb:
Since she who now bestows and now denies
Hath taken thee, hapless brother, from mine eyes.
But lo! these gifts, the heirlooms of past years,
Are made sad things to grace thy coffin shell,
Take them, all drenchèd with a brother's tears,
And, brother, for all time, hail and farewell!

Carried over many seas, and through many nations,
brother, I come to these sad funeral rites,
to grant you the last gifts to the dead,
and speak in vain to your mute ashes.
Seeing that fate has stolen from me your very self.
Ah alas, my brother, taken shamefully from me,
yet, by the ancient custom of our parents,
receive these sad gifts, offerings to the dead,
soaked deeply with a brother’s tears,
and for eternity, brother: ‘Hail and Farewell!’

The Pinocchio paradox has nothing to do with Pinocchio being a known liar. If Pinocchio were to say "I am getting sick", this could be either true or false, but Pinocchio's sentence "My nose grows now" can be neither truth nor false; hence this and only this sentence creates the Pinocchio (liar) paradox. --Wiki

LONDON (Reuters) - Plants do complex arithmetic calculations to make sure they have enough food to get them through the night, new research published in journal eLife shows.

Scientists at Britain's John Innes Centre said plants adjust their rate of starch consumption to prevent starvation during the night when they are unable to feed themselves with energy from the sun.

They can even compensate for an unexpected early night.

"This is the first concrete example in a fundamental biological process of such a sophisticated arithmetic calculation," mathematical modeler Martin Howard of John Innes Centre (JIC) said.

During the night, mechanisms inside the leaf measure the size of the starch store and estimate the length of time until dawn. Information about time comes from an internal clock, similar to the human body clock.

"The capacity to perform arithmetic calculation is vital for plant growth and productivity," JIC metabolic biologist Alison Smith said.

"Understanding how plants continue to grow in the dark could help unlock new ways to boost crop yield." (Reporting by Nigel Hunt; editing by Keiron Henderson)

Facts and Trivia / Re: The Island Of Stone Money
June 26, 2013, 01:21:01 PM
One time, according to the island's oral tradition, a work crew was bringing was bringing a giant stone coin back to Yap on a boat. And just before they got back to the island, they hit a big storm. The stone wound up on the bottom of the ocean.

The crew made it back to the island and told everybody what happened. And everybody decided that the piece of stone money was still good â€" even though it was on the bottom of the ocean.

"So somebody today owns this piece of stone money, even though nobody's seen it for over 100 years or more," Fitzgerald says.

This system, in the end, feels really familiar. If you go online to pay your electric bill, what's really changing in the world?

Some digits in your bank account get shifted around, along with some digits in the power company's bank account.

In other words, that stone money on the bottom of the ocean that you used to own now belongs to the power company.

Facts and Trivia / Re: The Island Of Stone Money
June 26, 2013, 01:20:19 PM
One key thing about this money: It was really heavy. A big piece could weigh more than a car.

As a result, this very concrete form of money quickly made the jump to being something very abstract.

"They often talk about the stones themselves not changing hands at all," Fitzpatrick says. "In fact, most of the time they wouldn't."

So imagine there's this great big stone disc sitting in a village. One person gives it to another person. But the stone doesn't move. It's just that everybody in the village knows the stone now has a new owner.

In fact, the stone doesn't even need to be on the island to count as money.

Facts and Trivia / Re: The Island Of Stone Money
June 26, 2013, 01:19:46 PM
It's unclear if these stones started as money. But at some point the people on Yap realized what most societies realize. They needed something that everyone agrees you can use to pay for stuff.

And like many societies, the people of Yap took the thing they had that was pretty â€" their version of gold â€" and decided that was money.

A piece of stone money was really valuable; you wouldn't use it for some everyday purchase. You'd use it for something big â€" a daughter's dowry, say.

"If somebody was in real dire straits, and something happened to their crop of food or they were running low on provisions and they had some stone money, they might trade," says Scott Fitzpatrick, an anthropologist at North Carolina State University who is an expert on Yap.

There's a tiny island called Yap out in the Pacific Ocean. Economists love it because it helps answer this really basic question: What is money?

There's no gold or silver on Yap. But hundreds of years ago, explorers from Yap found limestone deposits on an island hundreds of miles away. And they carved this limestone into huge stone discs, which they brought back across the sea on their small bamboo boats.

The lot is believed to be worth between $25,000 and $50,000. Online bidding concludes June 27. By Tuesday afternoon, the highest bid was $2,750.

Many of the items, including a birthday card Lewinsky asked the president to write Bleiler, as well as White House Matches and chocolates, were given to Bleiler by Lewinsky as gifts.

Star "examined each of the items in this lot as evidence in [the] impeachment case against Bill Clinton," Sanders said in a statement.

The items are currently owned by Kate Nason, Bleiler's now ex-wife.

Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives on perjury and obstruction of justice charges in 1998, but acquitted by the Senate and completed his term.

Lewinsky is currently believed to be living in the United Kingdom. Emails to her known representatives were not immediately returned.

Personal items, including a negligee, once owned by White House intern Monica Lewinsky and obtained during a federal investigation into her affair with President Bill Clinton are going on sale.

Among the letters and clothing items are an extra large black negligee and a large blue velour hoodie, but not the infamous blue dress, which played a role in proving the president and the intern had an inapropriate relationship in the 1990s.

The 32 items at one point belonged to Andy Bleiler, another married man with whom Lewinsky allegedly conducted an affair while she interned at the White House. In conducting his investigation into the president, special prosecutor learned of Lewinsky's affair with Bleiler and took the items "to examine as potential evidence," according to auction house Nate D. Sanders.

But over the weekend, his health took a turn for the worse, with the South African president's office saying he was in critical condition.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well-being and comfort," President Jacob Zuma told the nation Monday.

When the country held its first multiracial elections in 1994, Mandela became the South Africa's first black president. He stepped down in 1999 after serving a single term.

Though he continued to be a voice on the world stage for developing nations, human rights and the fight against AIDS after leaving office, Mandela, 94, has been sidelined by advancing age and bouts of illness in recent years.

He last appeared in public in 2010.
#21759
More than 40 vehicles crowded the parking spaces outside the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria, the South African Press Association reported.

Generators hummed and the area was brightly lit for the news organizations doing regular live broadcasts.

Government officials and several of Mandela's family members visited him in the hospital on Tuesday, the South African Press Association reported.

Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, spends every night at the hospital, where the former president has been since June 8 for a recurring lung infection.

Previously, authorities had described his condition as serious but stable.

During his 27 years behind bars for fighting apartheid, Mandela became a rallying symbol for those fighting South Africa's white-minority rule at home and abroad. His release in 1990 was the beginning of the end of apartheid, the system of legalized racial segregation the South African government enforced for more than 45 years.

"He is our hero. He is my mentor, my father. He is everything to me," 36-year-old Kuda Nyahumzvi told CNN outside the hospital. "But when it is his time, we wish his soul could just rest. He spent so long in jail and struggling."

Among the balloons, posters and cards outside the hospital Tuesday were dozens of news crews and broadcast vans.

Revolutionary and politician Nelson Mandela endured 27 years in prison before becoming South Africa's first president from 1994 to 1999.

Pretoria, South Africa (CNN) -- Former South African President Nelson Mandela remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday, a government spokesman said.

As night fell, well-wishers outside the Pretoria hospital where Mandela lay chanted his name, hung signs of support on bulletin boards and left flowers.

"We wish him well. We are calling on the world to unite and pray for Madiba," said 24-year-old Innocentia Moselane, using Mandela's traditional clan name. "He is our icon, and we love him."

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Government economic managers are closely monitoring the developments in the local market amid its sudden weakness, a senior official said today.

In a news briefing, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte refused to say if Malacanang, the presidential palace, was already concerned with what has been happening to the Philippine Stock Exchange index whose gains for the year were almost wiped out with the continued selling by investors.

"The analysts have explained why there is a downtrend because of what is happening in external market as well...but, as of now, the economic managers are looking at the market and monitoring developments," she said.

Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ramon Carandang, in a text message to reporters, said that the government sympathizes with some investors who have been losing money on the local bourse.

"But I believe once this indiscriminate global sell-off is done there will be a flight to quality emerging market assets and we will benefit from this," he said.

He warned that “xenogenic” stem cells, or those taken from animals, and “allogenic” stem cells, or those derived from other humans and not the patient himself, are not allowed in the country.

“Any other source outside the patient’s own body can result to death due to severe complications specifically graft versus host reaction, immediate or delayed hypersensitivity reaction and severe infections,” he said.

“Stem cells are our own natural healers or repair cells. Our immune system is our body’s own defense system against anything that can harm us (infections, etc). The immune system is therefore tasked to recognize our very own cells or tissues and thus not attack it,” he added.

The PMA is also looking into reports that the procedure is being done by foreign doctors in some five-star hotels in Metro Manila.

Olarte cautioned against unscrupulous individuals who take advantage of the growing popularity of stem cell therapy.
#21771
“We have to investigate if they died because of the stem cell treatments or because of their other illnesses. They actually went to Germany to seek treatment for liver cancer, pneumonia and heart disease,” said Olarte, spokesman for the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine.

Olarte also said the victims could have been given stem cells from sheep and rabbits since these are allowed sources of stem cells in Germany.

“We reiterate our warning to the public that stem cells derived from animals are not allowed here in the Philippines because of the risks that they pose to patients,” he added.

Based on the Department of Health’s guidelines on stem cell treatment, the only approved source of stem cells in the Philippines are autologous (self) audit stem cells that can be derived only from the patient’s own blood, bone marrow and fat.

Olarte said these are the “safest and proven procedures that are available worldwide today.”

By Sheila Crisostomo (The Philippine Star) | Updated June 25, 2013 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) is investigating reports that three politicians died one year after undergoing stem cell treatment in Germany.

Citing reports from the media, PMA president Leo Olarte said the politicians came from Mindanao. One of them died in April, while another passed away last month.

The PMA has not yet established the identities of the three politicians but it is coordinating with its chapters in Mindanao.

Olarte said that it should be established if the politicians’ deaths were caused by the stem cell treatment or because of their lingering illnesses: cancer of the liver and heart and lung ailments.

kana.  know your cat, if not your enemy, ala sun tzu.  ayaw sugsuga, ayaw pingota.  kanang pakalitkalit ug sugsug gamiton ang kamot, nagtoo ang iring ana nga nakigduwa ka, or for that matter may puruhan pa nga nasaypan nga cobra ready to attack imong kamot.  at your own peril gyod na.

makigduwa ka, diretso na lang ug hapihap sa ulo ug lawas (never the tummy) or gitika behind the ears.  never tease them with speed, kay lupig gyod ta kay di man kaha ta iring.  what's more, with a little more effort at discernment, makaila ka sa batasan sa iring just by looking at their eyes.  chances are cats with a certain arrogant look are bound to attack more than those with soft eyes and a self-effacing look.  know thy cat, and know thyself.

Ah, words of wisdom from one who is sometimes evil... ;D
