Mao ba ni ang lyrics nya Ms Ginger.

Love soft as an easy chair
Love fresh as the morning air
One love that is shared by two
I have found with you

Like a rose under the april snow
I was always certain love would grow
Love ageless and evergreen
Seldom seen by two

You and I will make each night a first
Every day a beginning
Spirits rise and their dance is unrehearsed
They warm and excite us, cause we have the brightest love

Two lives that shine as one
Morning glory and midnight sun
Time weve learned to sail above
Time wont change the meaning of one love
Ageless and ever evergreen

Manila: Famous Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao lost $180,000 (Dh660,600) to the wife of his driver who had allegedly forged his (Pacquiao's) signature in a bank in the United States, a local paper said.

When Pia Quijada, the second wife of Pacquiao's driver Joseph Jose, learned how to forge the signature of the Filipino boxer, she systematically siphoned off some $180,000 from his account in Wells Fargo, Sunset Boulevard, said the Standard newspaper.

When Pacquiao opened a bank account with $200,000 in 2006, he had used the address of the Quijada couple in Los Angeles. As a result, Pacquiao's bank statements and used cheques were mailed there.

Investigations showed that Pia started issuing "pay cash" checks in small amounts. She increased the amounts withdrawn from $300 to $1,000 a month.

Once, she withdrew $4,000 a month.

Later, her withdrawals averaged between $11,000 and $12,000 a month. She also transferred some $40,000 from Pacquiao's account to her newly opened account in Wells Fargo, Burbank.

In all, she issued a total of 500 cheques that bore the boxer's forged signature. Her forgery of Pacquiao's signature was not perfect at the beginning of the anomalous transactions, the report said.

Later, she perfected the skill, investigation showed. Investigation began when Vilma Rodriguez, assistant vice president of the Wells Fargo branch in Hollywood, became curious why Pacquiao was regularly issuing cheques even when he was not in the United States.

When Pacquiao went to the US for a training for his rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez in the US on March 15, he personally went to the bank, and helped the investigators.

February should not only be a love month but a heart month as well, an association of cardiovascular specialists said Monday.

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) advised the public once again to include taking care of their heart as a "valentine tradition" by keeping a healthy lifestyle.

"We urge Pinoys to take control of their health and live well everyday. A healthy lifestyle paves the way to lesser diseases, including the three leading causes of death in the country Tuesday: heart disease, stroke and cancer," said Dr. Ma. Belen Carisma, PHA vice-president and heart month committee chair.

"This month, we not only celebrate the day of hearts and loving, but we actually celebrate February as heart month. It was officially declared as heart month through Presidential Decree 1096 in 1973," Carisma said.

According to PHA, six out of ten leading causes of death in the Philippines are lifestyle-related. Number one are heart diseases followed by cancer and other chronic diseases

Dr. Rachel Garcia of the Department of Health(DoH) said cardiovascular diseases are on the rise and the number one killer in society Tuesday. This is because of the Pinoys like to eat salty and fatty foods but shun exercise.

The PHA said Filipinos can prevent the onslaught of heart diseases by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

"In a nutshell, a simple recipe to a healthy lifestyle is to eat less fats and take more fiber, stop or don’t start smoking, spend 20-30 minutes at least three times a week on physical activities, maintain healthy body weight and learn to manage stress," Carisma said.

But she said nothing is achieved overnight and making lifestyle changes doesn’t come easy.

"You must continue those habits, that’s why it is called a lifestyle, it doesn’t stop next month or next year, it’s a continuing process," she said.

Those who find it hard to change right away may start slowly by having minor changes in their activities and diet, according to Carisma.

Among the recommended activities are walking, jogging, swimming or biking instead of just sitting on the couch and watching television.

The PHA also advised the public to consult their doctors before making any drastic changes in their diet and find out what kind of nutritional plan would work best for them.

"Taking stock of your heart’s health is important and one of the best things you can do for yourself because being healthy means you can have more time to do the things you love with your family," Carisma said.

The PHA conducted a heart fair last Sunday at the Mall of Asia as their way of raising awareness on heart diseases. They held free risk factor screening services like ECG, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar count. They also had a hiphop competition and aerobics challenge among members of the PHA councils and pharmaceutical industries.

An overseas Filipino worker who was imprisoned for accidentally killing a fellow worker in Riyadh has arrived in Manila.

Ricky Cebanico, 39 years old, married and a resident of Morong in Rizal province, arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on board a Saudi Airlines flight SV 872 from Riyadh Monday.

Cebanico served three years at the Malaz Jail despite being sentenced for only one year.

Cebanico, a machine operator at the Yamama Red Brick factory, was jailed for accidentally killing fellow OFW identified as Emiliano Aviles on Nov. 13, 2004.

It was learned that Cebanico accidentally turned on a machine at the worksite. The victim was cleaning the machine from the inside at that time.

Cebanico was freed after his insurance company paid 74,000 Saudi riyals or P750,000 in blood money to the victim’s family.

He said no one from the Philippine government helped him while his case was being heard up to the time he was sentenced. With reports from Raoul Esperas and Dindo Amparo, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau

Former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor will testify at the Senate to explain why he gave P50,000 to Senate star witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr.

"I gave him P50,000 in an envelope," he said. "I even asked my wife to lend me P50,000 because he told me he was having difficulties and did not have anymore money."

Defensor said he and Lozada were personal friends and that he recommended Lozada to head of the Philippine Forest Corp., when he was secretary of environment and natural resources.

He talked with Lozada at La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong, where Lozada had sought refuge, because Lozada was in a predicament and did not know what to do, he added.

Defensor said Lozada did not want to testify at the Senate and wanted police protection.

He advised Lozada to call a press conference and clarify that he was not kidnapped, he added.

Defensor said he was willing to face the Senate in its inquiry into the supposed abduction of Lozada.

He has nothing to do with what Lozada knew and had to say about the NBN deal but would only like to clarify issues about his supposed abduction, Defensor said.

Testifying before the Senate on Friday, Lozada said it was Defensor’s idea for him to hold a press conference at 2 a.m. at La Salle on Thursday.

Lozada said armed men took him against his will after disembarking from a plane at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Tuesday.

While being taken to Laguna from the airport, he was made to sign affidavits and other papers before he was released from police custody, he added.

After the press conference, he surrendered to the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms, Lozada said. Aurea Calica

Perfume used by an Iranian national led parents of two girls in Baguio City to uncover the sex crime he allegedly did to two girls in Baguio City, ABS-CBN News reported Sunday.

Baguio police, meanwhile, were able to arrest the suspect identified as Mholaei Gholamreza alias "Kuya Imot." He was taken into custody in Dumaguete City in Negros Occidental.

Police said that the girls' parents learned of the crime after they sniffed Gholamreza familiar scent on the clothes of the victims.

The girls told their parents that the suspect had asked them to remove their clothes before mashing private parts.

Police said the suspect will face two counts of rape.

He declined to comment on the allegations.

In San Fernando City in Pampanga province, police have taken a Japanese national into custody after allegedly killing his stepson last week.

Shoji Uemera was accused of killing Claudia Roy's son after they had a disagreement over the rent imposed on apartment tenants.

Superintendent Renato Soria, San Fernando police chief, said the suspect admitted to the crime. The Japanese man also told police that he plans to commit suicide.

The suspect surrendered to San Fernando police and was accompanied by a lawyer and a representative from the Japanese embassy in Manila.

The suspect was taken to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Camp Crame in Quezon City, where charges are set to be filed against him.

MANILA, Philippines -- I find it futile to totally ban cockfighting in the Philippines because there is no popular opposition to the game yet among Filipinos, unlike in the United States where the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a force to reckon with.

Not only that. Cockfighting is tolerated here because the cash-strapped government earns billions of pesos from the operation of more than 1,400 cockpits all over the country.

In fact, even top government officials, including some Cabinet members and congressmen, are among the frequent habitués of big-time derbies.

Many people are wondering, too, why the Makati Coliseum and the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City are serving as venues for cockfights. Aren’t these supposed to be public edifices/buildings where cockfighting is not allowed?

* * *

Recently, animal rights activists belonging to the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protested the holding of the just-ended World Slasher Invitational 8-Cock Derby at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

PETA’s Francis Anthony Regamit said the protest was part of their crusade to ban cockfighting in the country. He stressed that cockfighting “only sends wrong signals to the youth,” adding that “cockfighting teaches kids not only to engage in gambling, but it also teaches them to be violent and cruel to animals.”

Another PETA crusader, Jennilyn Tagasa, belied the claim that cockfighting is part of the Filipino culture.

“Cruelty (to animals) is not an excuse for tradition. They force the animals to fight against each other,” she said.

* * *

In the US, only the state of Louisiana allows cockfighting. Cockfighting is banned in all other US states following the passage of a bill filed by Sen. Wayne Allard in the 106th Congress way back in 1999, amending the US Animal Welfare Act of 1976.

“It’s unfair and it’s not even funny,” said American cocker-breeders from the affected states. “It’s killing the honorable sport of cockfighting.”

Even Big Dome owner Jorge “Nene” Araneta, husband to former Miss Universe Stella Marquez of Colombia, said he does not bet much and that some of his cockfighting cronies do not bet at all. “They just love the thrill of breeding victorious gamecocks,” he said.

Hotelier Biboy Enriquez of Firebird fame also considers cockfighting a sport.

* * *

On the other hand, anti-gambling advocates said cockfighting destroys the lives of people and undermines the moral fiber of the nation.

“People need jobs, not gambling,” former Manila Mayor Mel Lopez once said.

Is cockfighting a sport or a gambling activity?

“Sabong” or cockfighting is both a sport (entertainment) and gambling activity. If memory serves, the Bureau of Internal Revenue levies an admission tax of 30 percent on the cost of a ticket because it is considered an entertainment. At the same time it imposes an 18-percent tax on all incomes from the operation of the cockpit as a gambling activity.

* * *

Vintage retired colonel Julian Malonso, a former Philippine Olympic Committee president, wrote to say that before the war, the dean of sportswriters was Pedro “Pete” Villanueva.

He was among the first Filipino graduates of physical education from the United States, in Chicago.

He was the sports editor of DMHM Debate-Mabuhay Herald and Monday Mail, owned by the Madrigal family and later acquired by the Sorianos.

During the Japanese occupation, Villanueva became the sports editor of the Manila Times, formerly the Tribune, owned by the TVT Tribune, Vanguardia and Taliba chain of publications.

Tony Siddayao of the Manila Times was widely regarded as the dean of sportswriters of the post-war era.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- If Barack Obama becomes the next United States president he will surely be assassinated, British Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing predicted in a newspaper interview published here Saturday.

Obama, who is vying to become the first black president in US history, would certainly not last long, a black man in the position of president. They would murder him," Lessing, 88, told the Dagens Nyheter daily.

Lessing, who won the 2007 Nobel Literature Prize, said it might be better if Obama's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton were to succeed in her bid to become the first woman president of the United States.

"The best thing would be if they (Clinton and Obama) were to run together. Hillary is a very sharp lady. It might be calmer if she were to win, and not Obama," she said.

A quote from the late Australian actor when he was still alive:

I felt like my career was out of my hands. I wasn't making any decisions; they were being made for me. And so to a certain degree, I had to go out and destroy my career somewhat in order to rebuild it. At the time, I had studios telling me I was crazy. I had agents on my back, publicists, family members, everyone saying, 'What are you doing? You should be this. You should be that. You should follow the dollar. Follow the gloss.'

"My life is together, both professionally and socially. But it's been a big learning process, and there is no YODA - there's no one who points you in the right direction. You've got to figure that out by yourself."

Philippine Daily News / Beer with Vitamin B...anyone?
February 09, 2008, 03:44:49 PM
This could be the start of something big...and healthy.

A Filipino-made beer with Vitamin B took center stage during the gathering of members of the International Federation of Inventors' Association in Bangkok, Thailand, recently.

Some of the inventions showcased by inventors from all over the world included chopsticks that double as a toothbrush and a hi-tech sandwich filling spreader.

The crowd, however, made a bee-line to the beer concocted by Filipino inventor Billy Malang.

Unlike ordinary beer, Malang's beer has Vitamin B.

"All clear beers have no vitamins. It just contains alcohol, which is converted to sugar which gives you a big tummy, called the beer belly. So I brought back the Vitamin B to make beer a healthier habit," said Malang.

Malang was among inventors from 27 countries who featured more than new 150 inventions in the

Obituary / Actor Health Ledger mourned at private funeral
February 09, 2008, 03:41:51 PM
PERTH - Family and friends of actor Heath Ledger bade farewell at a private service in his Australian home town on Saturday, with the media kept away and Ledger's father appealing for mourners to be allowed to grieve in peace.

Ledger, 28, best known for his role as a conflicted gay cowboy in the 2005 movie "Brokeback Mountain", died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in his New York apartment on. Jan 22.

His death shocked film fans and actors around the world and prompted warnings about mixing prescription drugs, particularly pain killers, tranquillizers and sleeping pills.

Among the mourners at Saturday's memorial service, in Perth, were Ledger's former partner and Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams, who arrived with Ledger's sister Kate but without the couple's two-year-old daughter Matilda.

Also among the hundreds of mourners at the service, at a private girls school in the Western Australian city, was model Gemma Ward, with whom Ledger had been reportedly linked, as well as Australian actors Cate Blanchett, Bryan Brown and Joel Edgerton.

Williams, 27, and Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, had both pleaded to be allowed to grieve in private.

A large media pack had camped outside the Ledger family home, prompting Kim Ledger on Saturday to tell reporters the service would be followed by a "very, very private" funeral with only 10 family members to attend.

"It's a pretty sad time and we are finding it difficult to cope by ourselves," he said.

Ledger starred in 18 movies in Australia and Hollywood, and received an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a gay cowboy opposite co-star Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee - Tornadoes and thunderstorms ravaged parts of US South on Tuesday and Wednesday, killing at least 47 people, injuring more than 150 and causing widespread damage.

Hardest hit were Tennessee -- where 24 died -- Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and Alabama, with unconfirmed sittings of 69 tornadoes across the region and northward into Indiana, according to the National Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

The storms crumpled trucks on highways like toys and trapped and killed people in splintered houses, factories and shops.

"This big of an outbreak is unusual on any day any time of year," center metrologist Roger Edwards said. Tornadoes typically kill about 70 people in the United States each year.

Storms continued to prowl the region after daybreak. The National Weather Service said tornado watches were posted Wednesday morning in parts of Florida, Alabama and eastern Tennessee.

The weather service and state officials said 24 had died in Tennessee, 13 in Arkansas and seven in Kentucky and three in Alabama. Injuries were widespread, with 149 people injured in Tennessee alone.

A tornado struck the Columbia Gulf Transmission company in Hartsville, Tennessee, and set off a natural gas fire that lit up the early morning sky, officials said.

The twister flattened the nearby home of one person.

"It just took the house and everything and my horses and my dog," Dara Reasonover told CNN. "I don't know if they're alive or dead but we'll make it."

Two of the states hit by the tornadoes -- Arkansas and Tennessee -- were among the 24 "Super Tuesday" states that held nominating contests before November's presidential election.

Several candidates expressed condolences to victims as they addressed supporters.

'Pretty rough night'
"It's a pretty rough night in the scope of it. I don't know if I can remember when we've had as many (tornado) warnings and touchdowns," Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe said by telephone.

The governor's spokesman, Matt DeCample, said the number of injuries was unknown. "We're getting answers back in the multiples, but we're still looking for folks," he said.

Earlier, Kentucky emergency spokesman Buddy Rogers said seven people were killed there.

Three deaths and multiple injuries were reported after a tornado tore through Lawrence County in northern Alabama, said Brenda Morgan of the Alabama Emergency Agency.

Neighboring Mississippi reported no deaths but around 11 injuries after two tornadoes ripped across an industrial park, seriously damaging a Caterpillar factory, and farm communities north of the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford.

The storm system stretched as far north as Ohio.

The Jackson Sun in Tennessee reported a nursing home was seriously damaged but the 114 residents were evacuated safely. A college in Jackson was also damaged, briefly trapping some students in dormitories.

Hi Ms Bambs, it's really exciting to see the fights of Manny Pacquiao on your flat screen considering that he is now recognized globally as the new superstar in boxing, what i knew in the US they had what they called the pay per view ( PPV ) that is the live action from the arena directly transmitted into their screen with out cuts, the subsciption if i'm not mistaken is 50 dollars something, i just dont know if your place in Europe do have access of pay per view in the US. there still one good option you can also watch Mannys bout with your love ones thru tapes.

WAS the end of the road for the “Maasin Bomber” Alex Aroy when he died on Monday night after a 10-round rematch with Arnel Tadena in Villaba, Leyte.

After losing the match via unanimous decision, Aroy went to the locker room and complained that he had difficulty urinating and defecating. He also experienced excruciating pain in his abdominal region and later passed out.

“After the fight he went to the locker room to relieve himself but he couldn’t. He said that he felt pain in his stomach. I told him that I’ll bring him to the hospital and then he collapsed,” matchmaker Willie Flores told Sun.Star Cebu.

Because of the pain, he was brought to Villaba District Hospital for treatment around 10:30 p.m.

Since the hospital lacked the facilities to tend to him, he was transferred to Manuel Veloso Memorial Hospital in Palompon, some 47 kms. away.

However, Aroy did not reach the hospital alive.

Flores said the initial finding of the doctor at Villaba Hospital was that the 23-year-old boxer died of cardiorespiratory arrest.

For his part, Rex “Wakee” Salud, the manager of Aroy, promised to help his family.

“It has happened, there is nothing we can do. All we can do now is help the family the best way we can,” said Salud.

Aroy had his professional debut in Jakarta, Indonesia when he fought and won against Donny Suratin of Indonesia in an eight rounder. He then went on to win his next eight fights but his streak was put to a halt by ALA boy Rollen Del Castillo in 2005.

Aroy defended his PBF light flyweight belt against Tadena of Bohol last August 2007, which ended in a draw in the second round after he was hit by an accidental headbutt from Tadena. He kept the PBF title.

He also had a stint in South Africa where he lost to World Boxing Council International minimum weight champion Zukisani Kwayiba, which ended in a controversial victory for the South African after the fight was stopped due to a power outage. The match went to the scorecards and he lost.

Aroy was rated RP No.7 in the light flyweight category and had a professional career record of 12 wins 6 losses and 2 draws with 6 wins by knockout. (EKA With ESL)

For all the damage he’s done to the Mexican fight game, Manny Pacquiao is probably the most popular non-Mexican fighter in that country. In seven straight bouts, and 10 his last 11, the Filipino slugger has fought a Mexican opponent. He’s sent the beloved Marco Antonio Barrera into retirement, and punched hero Erik Morales to the brink of it.

While Pacquiao’s superstardom has come largely at the expense of Mexican fighters, “Pac-Man” doesn’t wear that fact on his sleeve as, say, Roger Mayweather once did long before unintentionally cracking us up on HBO’s 24/7. If Mayweather managed to dub himself “The Mexican Assassin” for stringing together some decent wins in the late-’80s, think of what kind of nickname Pacquiao could carry.

But for the most part, Pacquiao has always let his fists speak for themselves. His swarming, aggressive style has helped make him one of the biggest draws in the sport, so there’s no need to antagonize anyone to sell tickets. In turn, devoted Mexican fans have actually developed an admiration for the man who has given them so much heartache.

“I think they respect Manny Pacquiao,” said Telefutura analyst Bernardo Osuna. “To do what he’s done against the best Mexican fighters of his generation speaks to his tenacity. The working man can’t help but love Manny Pacquiao. He’s not that charmed guy who has had everything handed to him on a platter. He goes out there against guys who are supposedly there to outclass him and comes through every time.”

But this is a pride sport, after all, and Mexican fans in particular are fiercely devoted to their own. So never in his career has Juan Manuel Marquez had the chance to win over his countrymen as he will on March 15 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, where he’ll tangle with Pacquiao for THE RING’s junior lightweight championship of the world.

It’s a sensational matchup, a potential Fight of the Year candidate pitting two of the top three pound-for-pound fighters. And it could take on added meaning in Marquez’ native country.

“I am Mexican, and I support Mexicans,” said Barrera, who also has a rooting interest as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions. “Manny Pacquiao is a very good friend, but I will come to support Juan Manuel.”

While Pacquiao’s style has even earned him adoration south of the Rio Grande, Marquez has never developed into a top draw thanks partially to a more clever counter-punching approach that has sometimes turned off Mexican fans. The talented Marquez can be fun to watch, but he’s never been the blood-and-guts type warrior Morales and Barrera were for much of their careers.

But perhaps more than his style, Marquez has been held back by a lack of opportunity. While the Pacquiao-Barrera-Morales three-way rivalry dominated the featherweight landscape, Marquez always seemed to be the odd man out. To be fair, some of it was thanks to poor management decisions.

In 2000, he turned down a bout with Naseem Hamed. Barrera wound up stepping in and obliterating the “Prince” in a performance that revived his career. Four years later, Marquez was advised to step away from a rematch with Pacquiao and the $750,000 purse offered by then-promoter Top Rank. Marquez wound up dropping a decision to Chris John in Indonesia for $30,000.

Before finally getting a shot at Barrera last March, Marquez’ biggest opportunity came in his first meeting with Pacquiao, back in ’04. “Dinamita” looked unready for prime time initially as Pacquiao exploited his early mistakes in scoring three first-round knockdowns. But Marquez survived, then began to solve Pacquiao after a few rounds. He outboxed Pacquiao down the stretch to earn a 12-round draw in a verdict that could have gone either way.

Now 34, Marquez, 48-3-1 (35), is apparently getting that now-or-never feeling that usually seems to come too late in this sport (see Roy Jones Jr.). When Pacquiao, 45-3-2 (35), was close to moving up to 135 pounds to meet Morales conqueror David Diaz, Marquez agreed to take a smaller cut of the purse to get the deal done.

“For Marquez, this was not about money, no question about it,” Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael. “It was about him standing up there and showing all the Mexicans that, ‘Hey, you know that this guy beat two legends, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, but now I’m going to show Pacquiao what Mexican fighters are all about.’ That is what motivates him. He knows with a victory over Pacquiao that his name will be considered right there with Morales and Barrera.”

It’s a historic fight, and not just for nationalistic reasons. The title has been vacant since the institution of The Ring championship policy in 2002. Harold Gomes, who outpointed Paul Jorgensen in 1959, was the last universally recognized 130-pound champ, though the linear title was passed around until Brian Mitchell retired with it in 1991.

“I think it really irks Marquez that he let that first rematch get away over petty conditions that were thrown about,” Osuna said. “If he doesn’t take this opportunity now, he’ll never get this opportunity again. He sees Manny moving up in weight or getting other fights. He wanted to seize the opportunity. You have to do it now because it may be too late, or it may never happen.”

But will he seize the moment March 15?

It could come down to which fighter has developed more in the past four years. If that’s the case, then it will be a big night for Pacquiao. Under the guidance of trainer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao has grown into more of a multi-dimensional threat, not that he was ever considered strictly one-dimensional at the championship level.

Roach called the first Pacquiao-Marquez clash a “very poor fight” for Pacquiao. After enjoying so much success with his left hand in the opening round, the southpaw Pac-Man relied on it throughout the rest of the fight. Roach said that tact made his fighter an easy target for Marquez’ quick counters.

“Marquez is a very good counterpuncher,” Roach said. “The first time they fought, Manny was just throwing the left, and he was countering that shot all night long. I think it was pretty simple for him. He’s been a little more aggressive [lately]. I don’t know if that’s because he’s slowing down and can’t counter or if he’s trying to make himself more marketable.”

Though he’s coming off decisive 12-round wins against Barrera and Rocky Juarez, Marquez might be at the start of that gradual downslope all fighters reach at some point. His power seems to be a bit diminished from where it was four years ago. As for Marquez’ vaunted hand speed, though, it didn’t appear to be diminished in his November 3 drubbing of Juarez.

As for Pacquiao, punishment in and out of the ring could be taking its toll on his 29-year-old body. Last April, after facing his share of distractions and training disruptions, he got a tougher-than-expected challenge from previously unbeaten Jorge Solis, who eventually fell in eight. Six months later, Pacquiao won a comfortable decision in his rematch with Barrera, the same fighter he stopped impressively four years earlier.

Part of the blame for Pacquiao’s pedestrian performance in the Barrera fight might have been his struggle to make the 130-pound limit. Whether it was a reflection of his motivation heading into a second meeting with a guy he’d already demolished, or simply a failure to properly monitor his weight after moving camp from the Philippines to Los Angeles (as Roach claims), only Pacquiao knows.

There was talk of staging Pacquiao-Marquez II at a catchweight above 130, but the Pacquiao camp decided to take the bout at the junior lightweight limit to ensure it would be for the title. Roach said in early-December that he’s planning a 10-week training camp, with the last eight weeks to be held at his Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

“Manny won’t look past this guy,” Roach said. “He knows this is the guy who gave him the hardest fight since he’s been in America, along with Agapito Sanchez in 2001. Marquez fought a great fight that night. Manny, I know he respects that. He knows he needs to work really hard for this fight.”

While it seems that there’s more on the line for Marquez, Pacquiao has plenty at stake despite already being an established superstar. Pac-Man is reportedly looking to meet Diaz for a lightweight belt this summer, then possibly Oscar De La Hoya in the fall.

Barring the unlikelihood of a one-sided blowout, a loss to Marquez wouldn’t necessarily derail Pacquiao’s plans, but it would knock some luster off his name. And while his focus might be more on dollars than legacy at this point, a draw and a loss to Marquez would certainly affect Pacquiao’s standing among the all-time greats.

“The match itself is very dangerous for Manny,” said Bruce Trampler, the matchmaker for Pacquiao-promoter Top Rank. “He dropped the guy three times in the first round and had to fight for his life after that. You knock out that first round, and probably Marquez did more than Manny that first time.

“I think it’s his most dangerous fight. As for whether it’s the right fight, that’s Manny’s call. He was presented many options, and he selected this one. If he picked Marquez, maybe it was unfinished business. Which is fine. You have to respect that.”

So will he gain more respect south of the border by beating another Mexican titlist? When pressed for a prediction, Barrera would only say that he’s supporting Marquez, and that Dinamita must go to the body and make better use of his hand speed against the quick Pacquiao. Osuna went a step further.

“I really do like Marquez,” he said. “He’s coming into this fight with everything. He made all the concessions necessary for this fight. It’s a pride fight for Marquez. If he can avoid making the mistakes he made the first time around, I can’t see Manny evolving enough in the last four years to overcome Marquez’ boxing skills.”

It can be argued that Marquez has never really lost a fight; many thought he deserved the nod against Freddie Norwood in 1999, as well as against Pacquiao and John, and his other loss was a bizarre disqualification in his pro debut. Pacquiao has a better right hand than he did four years ago, but he won’t be able to match Marquez’ speed or savvy.

Pacquiao will pressure Marquez relentlessly and try to make it a brawl. He’ll have his moments, and could very well score a knockdown in the middle rounds. But Marquez, who has waited four years for this chance, won’t make the same mistakes he did early in the first fight. He’ll outwork and outbox Pacquiao to earn a 12-round decision and the biggest win of his career, though it might not be the blood-and-guts type of battle that will endear him to his countrymen or even take him to the next level as a mainstream star. Like many great artists, some fighters just seemed doom to excel without ever breaking through.

But when it’s time to talk about legacies and career significance, a win against Pacquiao will mean everything for Marquez.

“It would definitely validate what he and many in the boxing world believe, that he was on par with Morales and Barrera but never got the chances that they got,” Osuna said. “Doing what they couldn’t do to Manny Pacquiao would validate his career.”

And maybe salvage some Mexican pride.

A day after former House speaker Jose de Venecia poured his heart out during an emotional speech that revealed anomalies in the administration allegedly masterminded by President Arroyo's biological and official family, Malacañang asked him: why only now?

"Why up to the last minute was he moving heaven and earth to have a photo-op with the President during the golf game to show that the President is still supporting him?" Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a radio dzMM interview Tuesday, referring to the weekend golf game between officials of the ruling Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats.

"Why did he make those allegations only now? Why up to the last minute he was projecting support of the President for his leadership?" Bunye added.

The Philippine Star, meanwhile, reported that President Arroyo ignored the verbal attacks made against her and members of her family by de Venecia. In her speech at the energy summit at the SMX convention center in Pasay City, Mrs. Arroyo made only a brief reference to the tumultuous voting in the House of Representatives Monday night.

"We are focused like a laser pointed on the infrastructure boom and expansion of public services and not on politics," she said.

She responded to one of de Venecia’s allegations in his privilege speech that the sale of state power plants was rigged in favor of Palace cronies.

She said: "The sale of the assets generated funds much more than we asked for. And in all these transactions, even losing bidders congratulated us."

In a related development, Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. president Jose Ibazeta Tuesday reiterated that the bidding for the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) was done in a "very transparent manner," contrary to de Venecia’s allegations that it was rigged in favor of the company owned by businessman Enrique Razon Jr., who is known to be close to the Arroyos.

"We have done all the auctions of Napocor assets based on existing bidding rules. We have always been transparent on all these transactions," he said.

Razon has also challenged de Venecia to prove his allegations.

In a text message to The Star, the executive assistant of Razon quoted him as saying: "Show proof that I talked to even one congressman," in response to de Venecia’s claims.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, meanwhile, denied that he was behind de Venecia's ouster.

Puno said that it was the congressmen that kicked de Venecia out of the speakership and not him.

But for de Venecia ally and Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante, Puno is behind it all.

"He's with KAMPI (Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, the President's political party) -- I wouldn't be surprised if they consulted him," he said.

For his part, Puno challenged the Pangasinan representative on Monday night to leave the administration coalition.

Meanwhile, former Surigao del Sur representative Prospero Pichay, who was beaten by de Venecia for the speakership once, said that the former speaker is also in danger of losing his leadership of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats party.

Pichay, who also lost in the 2007 senatorial elections, also said that he is ready to replace de Venecia as Lakas party president.

Sports and Fitness / Sparmates lined up to test Pacquiao
February 05, 2008, 06:04:12 PM
Manny Pacquiao begins serious sparring at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles tomorrow (Manila time) and trainer Freddie Roach has assembled a formidable cast of nine fighters, including three new undefeated contenders, to mimic Juan Manuel Marquez’s style.

It won’t be easy beating Marquez who survived three knockdowns in the first round to salvage a split 12-round draw with Pacquiao in their first meeting in 2004. A technician whose trademark is crisp counter-punching, Marquez is expected to give Pacquiao plenty of trouble in their much-awaited rematch at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on March 15.

But boxing scholar Hermie Rivera, writing from Newark, California, said there’s no doubt in his mind that Pacquiao will dispose of Marquez convincingly inside the distance.

To prepare for Marquez, Roach is tapping unbeaten Dean Bryne, Juan Garcia and Daniel Cervantes to trade blows with Pacquiao in the gym. They’re newcomers in Pacquiao’s team. Also in the rotation is amateur hotshot Adrian (A-Game) Gallon, Jr. Others in the lineup are holdovers Ray (Sugar) Beltran and David Rodela. Three more unnamed sparmates will be added to the list just in case there are casualties along the way.

Rivera noted that it isn’t easy signing up sparmates for Pacquiao because no amount of money is worth absorbing the punishment meted out by the Filipino ring icon. Roach personally hand-picks the sparmates who are usually bigger and heavier so theoretically, they’re able to take what Pacquiao dishes out.

One of Roach’s early choices, Roger (Speedy) Gonzalez, was not in the final cast disclosed by Rivera. Gonzalez, 29, is a Marquez clone and has been described as “ultra-quick and an excellent counterpuncher.” It was not known why Gonzalez was scratched from the lineup.

Byrne, 23, is a lightwelterweight with a 6-0 record. Garcia, 21, is a superfeatherweight whose record is 14-0, with five KOs. Cervantes, 22, is a lightwelterweight with a record of 9-0. None is a devastating puncher but lack of power is negated by superior boxing skills.

The other sparmates are Beltran, 26, with a 21-3 slate, Gallon, 19, and Rodela, 24, with a 7-1-2 mark, including four KOs.

Last Saturday, Pacquiao decided to spar four rounds with Byrne in an unscheduled foray. Pacquiao toyed with Byrne for three rounds then got the urge to unload a left straight that bloodied the Irishman’s nose.

Rivera said Roach is excitedly laying the groundwork for seven weeks of hard sparring in a “seamless” preparation for the shootout with Marquez.

Rivera said Pacquiao’s personal physician Dr. Alan Recto recently flew in from his home in Laredo, Texas, for a routinary check-up and found the fighter in tip-top condition.

The consensus along cauliflower row is the fight will go the 12-round distance. Billy Hussein, who trains Vic Darchinyan, said he expects Pacquiao to win on points because Marquez is no longer the same fighter of four years ago.

“Marquez is now 32,” said Hussein whose brother Hussy challenges IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. in Dubai on April 18. “He didn’t look impressive in his last two fights, beating (Marco Antonio) Barrera and (Rocky) Juarez. But Manny didn’t look too impressive himself in winning over (Jorge) Solis and Barrera last year.”

Hussy Hussein also predicted the fight to go the full route but chose Marquez to take the decision. “Marquez has learned from his mistakes in the past,” said Hussein. “He won’t commit the same mistakes again.”

Rivera quoted several boxing experts on their opinion of what will likely be the outcome of the bout.

Willie Harris, whose son Ronnie won a gold medal as a lightweight fighter at the 1968 Olympics, said “a well-conditioned Pacquiao is unbeatable.” Harris frequents the Wild Card Gym to check out prospects.

“Marquez will find it difficult to beat Manny who’s on a tear, beating 10 of 11 Mexican victims,” said Harris. “What I’ve been seeing daily in Manny’s workouts is a determined fighter out to do well.”

Mexican fighter Alejandro (Alacran) Perez said Pacquiao will beat Marquez with his speed and power. Perez, 21, reminds Rivera of a young Julio Cesar Chavez. Rivera said Perez now spars with Filipino superbantamweight hotshot Bernabe Concepcion who takes on Juan Ruiz in Mexico this Saturday.

Trainer Joe Goosen said Pacquiao should breeze against the Mexican because even as Marquez has more experience, he isn’t as aggressive.

“Only an M-16 armalite can help Marquez stop Pacquiao,” said Goosen’s aide Gregorio Asuncion. “Age will matter most in the rematch, not weight problems. Remember that Manny was overweight in his rematch against Barrera yet he beat him silly. Barrera, a master boxer, never had weight problems.”

BERLIN - The Berlin Film Festival will start with a bang Thursday with the premiere of a Rolling Stones documentary by Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese, kicking off 11 days of star turns, live music and a race for the Golden Bear top prize.

Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis and Bollywood heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan are among the stars who will follow Scorsese and the self-proclaimed "world's greatest rock'n'roll band" down the red carpet.

The 58th edition will feature around 400 pictures from around the world. "Shine A Light", the Rolling Stones film, will screen out of competition.

Twenty-one films will vie for awards including the latest from Britain's Mike Leigh, Iranian director Majid Majidi, Yoji Yamada of Japan, Hong Kong's Johnnie To and US filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.

A jury led by Greek-French director Costa-Gavras ("Missing") will hand out the prizes at a gala ceremony February 16 before the Berlinale wraps up the next day.

Festival director Dieter Kosslick said the usual gritty fare that is Berlin's trademark would be leavened by a clutch of music-driven films.

"This year the Berlinale will not be excessively political, at least less than usual," Kosslick said. "It will certainly be more musical."

Madonna will unveil her directorial debut, "Filth and Wisdom", a romp starring a Roma punk band.

The godmother of punk, Patti Smith, will attend a screening of a documentary on her career and perform live on the festival sidelines.

Rock veteran Neil Young will present a film about Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour, alongside pictures about Sudanese hip-hop artists and Argentinian tango.

And Khan will be on hand for the international premiere of "Om Shanti Om", which is already a smash in India.

Cruz stars in "Elegy", a picture by Spain's Isabel Coixet based on a Philip Roth novel, while Johansson goes head-to-head with Natalie Portman in "The Other Boleyn Girl".

Fresh from their Oscar nominations, Day-Lewis and Anderson will present epic oil drama "There Will Be Blood".`

Julia Roberts is on the guest list with the family tragedy "Fireflies in the Garden" and Jack Black is expected in town to promote "Be Kind Rewind", a bittersweet comedy by French director Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind").

Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris ("The Fog of War") will offer an unflinching look at the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal at the Abu Ghraib jail, "Standard Operating Procedure". It will be the first documentary to compete for the Golden Bear.

US newcomer Lance Hammer will screen "Ballast", a drama set in the Mississippi Delta.

And To has toned down his usual ultra-violent style with "Sparrow", a look at friendship among pickpockets.

The Berlinale ranks among Europe's top three festivals.

The chief film critic of the Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel, Jan Schulz-Ojala, said he was looking forward to Leigh's improvised comedy "Happy-Go-Lucky" and the latest from Israeli director Amos Kolek, "Restless".

"The competition this year looks quite promising," Schulz-Ojala told AFP.

"I hope it will be more even than in recent years. Berlin has slipped a bit compared to Cannes and Venice, which have continued to get better and better."

Kosslick said he was content with having the first major festival of the year, based in one of Europe's most dynamic capitals.

"Even if we're 1,000 times bigger than we used to be, even if we're wilder and more fun than Cannes, Cannes will always remain number one -- that's the way it is and I am not trying to change it," he told AFP.

Other keenly awaited pictures include "Katyn" by veteran Polish director Andrzej Wajda, nominated for a best foreign film Oscar this year. The film recounts the 1940 Soviet massacre of thousands of Polish soldiers, including Wajda's father.

Among the quirkier features is "Green Porno", a collection of short films about the sex lives of insects made by Isabella Rossellini.

And parallel to the festival, Hollywood actor Robert De Niro, pop star Kylie Minogue and American rock'n'roll veteran Chuck Berry are expected in Berlin to accept "Golden Camera" prizes for their work.

The country’s military chief on Tuesday denied an allegation made in a privilege speech by Pangasinan 4th district Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr. before he was ousted as House Speaker of an assassination plot by retired generals against him and his son.

De Venecia had said that according to former Army chief retired Lt. Gen. Jaime de los Santos there were two or three retired generals plotting to kill de Venecia and his son that would allegedly use a member of Abu Sayyaf. Jose III, de Venecia’s son is a whistleblower in the scrapped national broadband deal alleged to be bribery-laden and overpriced which is the subject of a Senate investigation.

Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff, said that no military man is in the business of assassinating people as he added that it is also unthinkable to use the Abu Sayyaf.

Esperon called on the former speaker, whom he thanked for the being good to the military during his five terms as House Speaker, to be more specific in his allegations.

Meanwhile Esperon said that the AFP is not in any way affected by the change of leadership in the House of Representatives.

Esperon told reporters during a visit to the headquarters of the Philippine Army that what happened in the Lower House was just part of the democratic process and that the military has no position or part on the matter.

Esperon brought along his joint staff in his visit to the Army headquarters and was were briefed by senior Army generals led by commanding general Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano on the Army’s internal security operations against the communist New People’s Army (NPA).

Yano has been designated by President Arroyo as AFP chief of staff after Esperon’s term extension.

Esperon revealed that what happened yesterday in the lower chamber of Congress was not talked about in their meeting and was not part of their agenda.

Esperon said that the military’s focus is to fulfill it's mission of reducing the number of NPA fronts and getting rid of the Abu Sayyaf Group. To prove his point that the military leadership is not worried about the events in the Lower House, Esperon said that the military’s alert status remains normal, though some units are on alert.

Yano for his part observed that, at present, he sees no internal threat from disgruntled soldiers.

He also expressed confidence that any attempt to recruit soldiers to destabilize the government will fail. Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News

As expected, the dance repertoire for more than an hour and considered as maiden performance in Bohol of one of the country’s national treasures, the Bayanihan Dance Company, afforded extreme yet quality enjoyment to more than a thousand fans and culture and the arts aficionados coming from the different places in the province on the evening of January 26 at the jam-packed Jagna gymnasium.

Mayor Exuperio Lloren personally welcomed the world class performers during the short pre-show program as he expressed profound gratitude in behalf of the Boholano people and the Local Government Unit of Jagna in particular for extending their goodwill and sharing their most after-sought time and talent in promoting the country’s dance culture.

“We will never forget this most memorable evening with you. Despite your hectic schedule, you still find time to come to our humble town and offer your world-class talent for the realization of our culture and the arts development projects,” Mayor Lloren said.

The Mayor likewise lauded the effort of his older brother and former Bayanihan member (Batch 1973) himself Mr. Antioco Lloren for facilitating the prestigious dance concert as he especially mentioned the major and the broad audience for their support.

Among the most applauded dances performed included the Kagilimut-Malong which is a Muslim dance using the expert manipulation of the malong and the mastery of the hands, postures and subtle movements.

The Sayaw ed Tapew na Bangko or the dance on top of a bench was a more daring variation of the dance with benches placed one on top of another sending the audience to a spectacular moment.

The Vinta showed the agility and skillful balancing dance on top of bamboo held on the shoulder of men with a long cloth symbolizing the water or waves was breathtakingly demonstrated with grace. A vinta is a native boat of the south with colorful sail.

The Singkil which the Bayanihan developed with simple variation in 1958 and has since become a theatrical and stylized spectacle to the point of it becoming the signature piece for the dance company awed the audience so much.

Towards the end of the show, Bayanihan Executive Director Ms. Suzy Benitez introduced each of the young dancers and instrumentalists and to the surprise of the Jagna people, she presented Janice Alborez, a Kaliwat-Jagnaanon of the Rañoa clan of barangay Can-upao, as one of them.

However despite the success of the dance concert, Mr. Antioco Lloren lamented on the unenthusiastic response of some Jagnaanons to the once-in-a-lifetime show of the Bayanihan Dance Group.

“Our people still need to be educated culturally…while most Filipinos abroad would spend hundreds of euros or US dollars just to be able to witness the Bayanihan Dance Company for that matter, here, is a sad reality,” he opined.

Further, because of the Intellectual Property Rights which the Bayanihan Dance Company is INTERNATIONALLY entitled to, many were not able to take full video coverage and were banned to take shots of the various dances. Most of the dances are still due for release as announced before the start of the dance concert.

Despite a still-slumping housing market, an escalating credit crunch and spiraling inflationary pressures, the U.S. economy should still manage to advance at a 1% to 2% clip in 2008.

While investors might view that as bad news, there’s actually a positive twist, since it means that U.S. economy will likely dodge the recession that some observers have feared.

Even so, the U.S. economy won’t be in the investment spotlight in 2008, and investors will see the first signs of the "decoupling" of the U.S. market from those overseas. While the United States is narrowly dodging recession, other global economies will be advancing by as much as 10%. The emergence of a growing middle class in such key markets as China, India and Eastern Europe will make global dependence on the U.S. economy a thing of the past. With tens of millions of newly minted consumers ready to spend in China, that country could easily weather a U.S. downturn.

Even with decoupling, U.S. investors still can profit from markets abroad - regardless of what’s going on here at home…

Sun star version:

Ang mao nga biyahe maoy last trip niini.

(REV)

WASHINGTON - US employers cut payrolls for the first time in 4-1/2 years in January, the Labor Department said on Friday in a report that showed the slowing economy was at growing risk of sliding into recession.

A separate report showing a modest revival in manufacturing at the beginning of 2008 took some sting out of the jobs loss but financial market participants were betting the Federal Reserve will have to keep cutting interest rates.

A series of contrasting reports whipsawed financial markets, leaving stock prices basically unchanged in early afternoon trading and bond prices mixed. The dollar recovered earlier losses to show modest gains against the euro.

Uncertainty about US economic prospects was widespread.

"The economy is very weak. It's on the edge of recession but the data are mixed enough so that you can't say a recession has begun," said Stuart Hoffman, chief economist for PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh. "It's hanging by a thread but it hasn't been cut yet."

President George W. Bush acknowledged to a Kansas City, Missouri, audience there were "troubling signs, serious signs that the economy is weakening" and said Congress should speed up work on fiscal measures to get tax rebates to consumers.

Some 17,000 jobs were cut last month, sharply contrary to Wall Street analysts' forecasts that 80,000 would be created. December's new-job total was revised up to 82,000 from 18,000 but October and November gains were revised lower.

At midmorning, the Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity rose to 50.7 in January from 48.4 in December, a sign of expansion. Consumer sentiment also rose, according to a Reuters/University of Michigan Survey, though not as much as had been forecast.

The soft jobs numbers convinced some analysts that the economy already was in deep trouble.

"We are on the brink of a recession now," said Daniel North, chief economist for Euler Hermes ACI in Owings Mill, Maryland. "The job market is always a lagging indicator. This is a nail-in-the-coffin."

The national unemployment rate eased to 4.9 percent from 5 percent in December. The unemployment rate is calculated using a separate survey than the one the department uses for measuring the number of payroll jobs each month.

The Fed cut interest rates again this week in a bid to spur the economy and the Bush administration and Congress are wrangling over the fiscal stimulus plan. But analysts said more policy action may be necessary to try to avert a stall.

Boris Schlossberg, chief currency strategist for DailyFX.com in New York, said the jobs total "shows that the economy is at a virtual standstill."

"It is very negative from a long-term perspective because clearly the Fed is going to have to continue cutting rates," Schlossberg added. Lower US interest rates could put further downward pressure on the dollar's value.

Manufacturers cut 28,000 jobs in January, a 19th straight month of contraction for the sector, while the number of construction jobs dropped by 27,000. The Labor Department said construction industries have shed 284,000 jobs since employment peaked in September 2006, largely reflecting the continuing decline in home building.

A separate report from the Commerce Department showed, not surprisingly, that construction spending dropped 1.1 percent in December, partly because of a fall-off in home construction. Sales, construction and prices of both new and previously owned homes are in sharp decline with no early end in sight.

The job report showed that after holding steady for six months, the average workweek fell to 33.7 hours in January from 33.8 in December, another sign of weakening in labor markets.

The private sector added 1,000 jobs in January but 18,000 government jobs were lost.
