LGU Philippines / Re: Arthur Yap Way Kontra sa Bohol
December 08, 2009, 10:07:12 PM
Bohol is being positioned to be the rice bowl of the Visayas, with rice self-sufficiency now reportedly exceeding 100%. If Arthur Yap's government and private network will enhance Bohol's agricultural productivity and bring more investments in the agro industry, I don't mind voting him even if he is only a Boholano by affinity. I can even forget that his name has also been tarnished by the fertilizer scandal. With both the labor-intensive tourism and agriculture finding champions that will ensure Bohol will be on the national legislative agenda, I believe Bohol's star will continue to rise.

Hi Ben,

But then again, given the proximity of the elections and transition to the new government, I don't think Panglao Int'l Airport really figures in the political equation now. For one, Arroyo is a lameduck president who is more concerned about her political survival than the promotion of a fringe ally's political agenda.

Even if the budget for this project has supposedly been earmarked already, the implementing bureaucracy moves largely on the dictates of their political taskmasters--which in all likelihood will change hands either to Liberal Party's Noynoy Aquino or Nacionalista Party's Manny Villar.

Whether Aumentado stays on at Lakas-Kampi-CMD or not does not really make a difference when it comes to his pet project. The truth is, Panglao Int'l Airport has moved from the drawing board, to the implementing desks--to limbo.

Quote from: ben on December 08, 2009, 08:30:41 AM
This was my first thought too.  The Governor was pushing for some concrete action towards the building of the Airport prior to the election period.  Just speculation, of course, but could it be that some other people would prefer to turn it into a ghost project?
#210
Na-Ampatuan si Aumentado? It seems the golden boys of Malacanang have outgrown their aces. As far as the Malacanang is concerned, openly going against cha-cha merits the same punishment as wholesale slaughter of 57 hapless civilians.

All men watch porn, and it is not bad for themâ€"study

By Michel Viatteau
Agence France-Presse
First Posted 06:58:00 12/04/2009

MONTREAL â€" All men watch pornographic videos but it does not impact on their sexual habits or their relationships with women, a Canadian researcher has maintained after a two-year study.

Montreal University associate professor Simon Louis Lajeunesse told AFP his research had refuted views that pornography enthusiasts seek out in life what they see in X-rated videos, leading to sexual abuse or denigration of women.

"It would be like saying that vodka ads lead to alcoholism," the sociologist said.

The majority watches X-rated movies to satisfy a "fringe fantasy," according to his research, and it would be unfair to extrapolate from that that it leads to criminal behavior.

Lajeunesse said he had difficulty setting up the study as adult video stores and sex shops refused to allow him to post notices inviting men to participate.

A handful of universities permitted him to address their campuses, and after appealing to some 2,000 mostly women students to take part, 20 heterosexual men agreed to discuss their sex lives in depth.

His first discovery: all the respondents watched adult videos online. Singles viewed twice the amount of pornography as others with an average of three 42-minute sessions weekly, versus 1.7 27-minute sessions for those in a committed relationship.

Second: almost all searched alone for online erotica, whether in a committed relationship or not. Respondents explained they just did not feel comfortable sharing such moments with others, even with a spouse or girlfriend.

Some fit it into their leisure routine, as one respondent put it: "a good meal, a good movie and masturbation."

The study also revealed that men tend to fast-forward through scenes that do not interest them, often involving sexual violence or group ejaculation which they found "disgusting."

According to his research, said Lajeunesse, men search out pornography that relates to their earliest sexual fantasies, generally conceived at age 12 at the onset of puberty. They are not looking for new tricks to show off.

One student who participated in the study confided that he used to fantasize about orgies, but when presented such an opportunity he found himself unable to perform sexually.

Lajeunesse also dismissed suggestions that avid pornography enthusiasts seek to imitate in life what they see on screens, or that they watch X-rated videos in an attempt to purge vile sexual impulses.

"Both arguments are worthless," he said. Men make a distinction between their real lives and sexual fantasies, he argued.

One respondent, who claimed to dream of seducing a porn star, explained why he would never date one, saying simply: "I couldn't introduce her to my parents."

Data about temperature are in the public domain and are hard to classify because they are used for various purposes--from meteorologists to agriculturists.

Where I live, weather reports flash the range of temperature movement during the day and compare them with some kind of historical average. There really is a trend of temperature rising, but I am not sure if this is a significantly long-term trend. However, even for a layman like me, it is hard to contend that there is no trend towards warming since I have not experienced any major snowfall in the last fifteen years in areas where snow used to be at least knee-deep.

Quote from: Way Nada on December 01, 2009, 04:33:39 PM
If your geologist friend say that this cycle is natural then I agree with him because I believe that the climate cycle cannot be controlled by man even if there is a disruption in the cycle.

In my message posted yesterday I have this belief that global warming scientists are hoaxers
because instead of sharing information to other scientists who might have a different opinion than them they refused instead they resorted to trickery by manipulating data about global warming. The world is not warming but cooling! Hacker leaks thousands of emails showing climate change scientists conspire to hide and blind the people about the truth on the real data on climate change. They are now exposed as a fraud.

Hi Melrose,

Glad to see you back in Bohol. Maybe we can schedule this sometime next year since we plan to expand the involvement of youth in this event. Himuon natong joint project ni, Vids. Actually, wala'y professional training ning mga bata. They practiced by themselves. In fact, after Lynne reserved the venue and solicited sponsorships to cover the rental, she flew here in Japan and went back to Tagbilaran a week before the event. Last night, the youth band met at our house and Lynne informed them that she has received inquiries for them to perform at wedding events next year. With more training and exposure, these youngsters could really make good use of their talents. I told Lynne they could pool the proceeds as scholarship fund for their college.

Unsa ma'y plano ninyo, Vids. You're still based in Manila?

I have a geologist friend who also argues that the climactic changes we're going through are part of the long-term cycle that happens independent of human action. So should we just take comfort in the thought that we are caught in the midst of a geologic transition?

The argument that the world is not warming, however, runs counter to almost all physical facts. Tell that to those living in the sinking islands of Bohol, the government of Maldives that is now frantic to save its shores, shippers who live in danger of drifting icebergs, those who monitor the meltdown of polar ice, etc. The adverse acts of nature simply remind us human beings to be more responsible in our actions.

Thanks to all those who supported this event. It was very successful. Youth bands from other churches are requesting to join next time, so Lynne and I are planning something bigger to be participated in by different churches at least within Tagbilaran next year.

Here are some of the photos taken during the launching of the youth contemporary Christian music band, calling themselves M316, in our church in Tagbilaran, March of Faith.

M316? I was also clueless as to why these young musicians chose this name. It may either sound like a deadly weapon or a music gadget, depending on your age and interest.

But to the spunky youth of our church, the name is taken from John 3:16 which says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

What really touched me about them is that they are brimming with creativity in their expression of praise.

Aside from the four walls of the church, they have never performed in a public venue as big as ICM. It was daunting, but challenges are made for the youth and the young at heart.

They've always shared with me their desire to have their own CD of youthful Christian music. I just tell them, "Reach for your dreams. That's why God makes us young once in our life. The Bible says, 'Honor God while you are still young.'"

If your music connects with one or two in the audience, and plants the seed there for them to seek God, that's more than enough recompense for all your efforts.

Psalm 8:2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise

Since two of my kids are also teenagers, who are still adjusting to their new environment in the Philippines, I decided to make the youth my special ministry in the church for my kids to be able to connect to their musically creative brethren and kith.

I am also glad to be able to make use of my event-organizing skills in Japan, especially during my marketing stint with ABS-CBN Global, to be able to nourish the spiritual gifts of these youngsters.

Again, thanks to Bohol Beach Club, 18 K Fashion Gallery, Master's Link Travel & Tours, Ellan Joy, Baseteres Dry Goods and Jewelynne for the sponsorship which covered the venue rental fee.

It seems we cannot expect the church heirarchy to take action voluntarily on its errant priests, since they feel that dealing with this crime publicly will erode their moral authority. Just look at the case of Skelton. It behooves the bishop to address the problem publicly, since his attention has already been called to the history of this priest. But it seems that he considers the hallowed moral ground of the church to be of greater preeminence than the welfare of the youth. We're not in the age of friars anymore. The public should hold the church more accountable for the shenanigans of robed scalawags.

More than ever, the ripple effects of major economic jolts in the world show that none of us is an island. Who would have thought that the collapse of Lehman Brothers would cut down to size seemingly unshakable fortunes, and send states in the US and nations in Europe into the brink of fiscal insolvency? Since Dubai World is a government corporation, its declaration of moratorium is practically an admission of sovereign illiquidity. Considering that major banks in the US, Europe and Asia have exposure to Dubai, we'll only be counting days before we hear of the stud of falling companies hit in the domino effect. The Philippine government should also brace itself for the repatriation of our OFWs lured by the Dubai mirage.

This is another case yet of Cebu playing gracious host to undesirable aliens. Cebu has to raise its immigration procedures on par with international standards to stem the rise of foreign criminal elements from seeking refuge here. After all, when a gruesome crime like this happens, it's not these people's place of origin but Cebu that hogs the headlines... As if we don't have enough of bloody headlines already.

The text itself seems to refer to "immigrants" in general, and non-Western immigrants in particular, being entitled to this offer.

Last year, Japan made a similar offer to legal Brazilian immigrants, mostly Japanese descendants and a good number permanent residents. Those who take up the offer of about US $3,000 also bind themselves to the condition of not ever coming back to Japan. It caused some uproar in the media.

As foreigners, especially those who have no blood or family relations to our host society, we always live at their  pleasure and by their graces. It must have been worse on Japanese descendants, whose residency entitlement is due to their Japanese blood. But this is how the global crisis still continues to take its toll.

How men attract women through underwear
ABS-CBN

LONDON - Men only buy their own underpants when they are hoping to entice a potential partner into a relationship, according to a new survey.

The poll by British retailer Debenhams showed that men normally leave the purchasing of their underwear to their mothers until about the age of 19, relatively late when compared to women, who start buying their own knickers around 13.

Between the ages of 19 and 23, men tend to buy their own underwear, up to 31 pairs a year in the belief that wearing new underpants is an essential prerequisite to a relationship.

Buying declines gradually to zero between 23 and 33, because most men are in stable relationships and leave the shopping to their partners, unless they are still on the prowl.

"Our research shows that you can tell when a man is looking for a partner by the number of new underpants they buy for themselves," said Debenhams Head of Men's Accessories Buying, Rob Faucherand.

"If he buys more than 31 pairs every year then he's either still trying desperately to impress the woman in his life -- or else she's not The One," he said.

'Shop for me, baby'

However, Faucherand said that if your man seldom goes to the underwear section on his own, and instead assumes that you will choose for him, then you can be certain that your relationship is in a very stable phase.

The survey also reveals that underwear-buying among men picks up again briefly between the ages of 38 and 40, when some men are going through relationship break-ups and seeking new partners again.

The incidence of this new-found purchasing enthusiasm is short-lived however. It goes into a sharp decline and slumps to zero again at the age of 44 when men mostly find themselves in another stable relationship.

After 44, most men remain strangers to the underwear department for the rest of their lives, handing all responsibility for their underwear to women, Debenhams said.

"This is the one issue that feminism has never addressed," Faucherand said. "It's not who wears the pants in each household -- it's who has to buy them that counts."

Economic depression leads to psychological depression, which further feed on economic depression. I forsee a vicious circle which has to be broken. Obama seems to have missed on this critical moment to lift up the collective spirit for a decisive turnaround... Despite his giddy rise to power,  Obama is no Franklin Delano Roosevelt after all!

Unsaon na lang pagka-recover sa global crisis, when everything starts from the state of the mind? I am sure if a similar survey is conducted in Japan, it is in a worse psychological state, with a steep spike in its already high suicide rate.

Despite our multitude of natural and man-made woes, Filipinos apparently still seem to be coping better with our high smile-index whatever season we find ourselves in.

Arthur Yap was one of the respondents in the graft complaint filed by Marlene Esprat in Central Mindanao related to the fertilizer scam in 2003. The case was later dismissed by the Ombudsman, and further silenced by Esprat's cold-blooded murder. This is what I mean by the "long shadow", the gray area of public oblivion and controversy which is where most graft cases against big fishes are relegated.

Since Yap has never been proven to be directly involved in this anomaly, I give him the benefit of the doubt. I look at him in terms of the substance of his accomplishments, especially in Bohol agriculture, rather than in terms the clouds of the past--which most politicians, and everyone for that matter, have.

Coming from the No. 2 leader of Japan, this is a remarkable statement.

Japanese politicians have been known for their gaffes when commenting on international and local issues. Not too long ago, former Prime Minister Aso earned the ire of his fellow senior citizens when he called them "lazy."

Since the Democratic Party took over the helm in Japan in September this year, not only has domestic politics seen a rough change but there there has also been a tectonic drift in its Western partnership and diplomacy. That Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama studied in the US and is one of the best English-speaking prime ministers seems not to help at all. President Obama is visiting Japan this week, but preparations have been toned down and the reception is expected to be very wintry.

DPJ's Ozawa calls Christianity 'self-righteous'
Wednesday 11th November, 06:17 AM JST
Japan Today

TOKYO â€"Democratic Party of Japan Secretary General Ichiro Ozawa said Tuesday that Christianity is an ‘‘exclusive and self-righteous religion’’ after meeting with a Buddhist group leader. ‘‘European and U.S. societies with a historical background of Christianity are bogged down,’’ the ruling party’s No. 2 leader told reporters after meeting Yukei Matsunaga, president of the Japan Buddhist Federation, in Wakayama Prefecture.

On Islam, Ozawa said, ‘‘It is better than Christianity but it is also exclusive.’’ But Ozawa praised Buddhism, saying, ‘‘It teaches us a state of mind and way of life from the start about how human beings should be.’’ He added that the cause of the current social turmoil in Japan is that Japanese people are losing their original spiritual values.

‘‘Politicians cannot conduct politics if they are not prepared to work as both a human being and Japanese,’’ Ozawa said.

On the Liberal Democratic Party which became an opposition party following a general election in August, Ozawa said, ‘‘It is originally a typically Japanese party, but it lost that virtue. That is the biggest reason why it lost people’s support.’’

Given the Philippines' notably weak party system--as reflected in the frenzied cross-migration of politicians between administration and opposition parties every time survey results are announced--politicians should be judged on the merit of their track record and present performance.

Arthur Yap cannot completely stave off the long shadow of the fertilizer scam and his association with Gloria Arroyo. But I think he has made good on his promise to make Bohol the rice bowl of the Visayas. We have now attained 120 percent rice self-sufficiency since the last rice crisis.

Thanks Junjun, for weighing in with your personal experience as a participant.

This furor reminds me that history is really far from being a one-dimensional affair. History is always viewed from a particular perspective--and one event can mean differently depending on where you look at it from. Who was it who said, where you stand on a matter depends on where you sit?

Quote from: junjun on November 10, 2009, 04:44:59 PM
I attended the gathering and I am sure that I belonged to the 3 percent who rated the conference as "Good". Maybe I am deviant because I am part of the minority group. I will just share my experience and I hope of this said "controversy".

I will just highlights the major points raised by some followers of this forum.

1. The working committees especially the registration was was handled by the Board of Directors of the PNHS and not the local convener. There were participants almost 50 participants who did not receive the kit because there were many participants who did not inform the PNHS of their attendance. But the President of PNHS promised to send the kit.

2. The host school was only requested by the PNHS of a venue. The AV Hall looked like a refugee center. I heard that there was a move by the host school to transfer the venue but the PNHS declined. However, I can attest that even on the second day, the AV Hall was still full of eager participants. So it is not true that many participants left on the first day. By the way, the hall was really air-conditioned and its functional. WOW!

3. I can attest that the food served was really a disaster especially on the second day.But Common sense tells me not to blame the host school because the PNHS hired a caterer. Of course I expected much of the snacks. But the " piniritong saging and bingka" were good enough for me. At least may kinain pa di tulad ng iba na kahit lugaw wala.

4. I believed that as History teacher what really matters most were the topics presented. Dami kong na learn. If my colleagues were not satisfied of the food and accommodation, then they should come back and be billeted in expensive hotels so that they will experience the royal treatment. Nkalibre na nga kami ng 2 delicious suppers in Meridian and in Dauis.

5. Finally, this is a learning lesson for any institution that will handle hosting of seminars. Dapat may Memorandum of Agreement talaga para alam ng mga participants kung sino and dapat iblame! I don't agree with some remarks na "kahihiyan ng Bohol" ang nangyari. There are lots of beautiful things that Bohol can offer. They failed to highlight that on the first night at Meridian Hotel, all of us were mesmerized by the angelic voices of the Loboc Children's Choir for free!

There is a very tenuous line between a person who seeks a renewed life in a new environment and a plain and simple criminal fugitive disguised in holy garb.

I agree with Bay Hubs that if the Church wants to take a risk, it should decide to err on the side of caution.

Several years ago, the archdiocese became aware of Skelton's ordination as a Catholic priest in the Taglibaran diocese in the Philippines. Not consulted prior to the ordination, the Detroit archdiocese has since contacted the bishop of Taglibaran, to whom Skelton reports, regarding the priest's criminal history in Michigan. In summary, Joseph Skelton does not minister here nor would he be welcome or permitted to function as a priest in this archdiocese.

One has to be creative with his chosen career to do this. In my field, which is translation and marketing, all I need is a good communication network--broadband internet and telephone system--which is the backbone of the Business Process Outsourcing industry.  As my timetable for the launch of a Philippine base draws near, I have to speed up my study of low-cost communication technology and cement my network ties.

Usahay bitaw, maka-realize ko that I may have out-parented my parents by worrying too much about the kids. But it's liberating to see them grow wings on their own, unfettered by domestic rules, ug hangtud ron wa pa man hinuon ko tagaig sakit sa ulo. That it was my habit to walk them to school as kids here has really made them open up to me about their self-discoveries. My question is: Do the Diocese of Tagbilaran is aware of his criminal past?
First of all homosexual priest/child molester will always be remove because of the danger to the children and scandal to community. The only reason WE HAVE THOSE CHILD MOLESTER  PRIEST TODAY is because the homosexual bishop and other homosexual priest cover up and promote them.

Day Quel, the article states that Catholic officials in Detroit have informed the Tagbilaran Diocese about the criminal history of Skelton. It appears that this info was communicated before the ordination. At this point, it is going too far to accuse the senior heirarchy of covering up Skelton's offense because they themselves are guilty of the same offense. But the Bishop should definitely answer for the consequences of his decision.

Quote
As far as judgement  of course we are to judge. Wrong is wrong. What if you saw someone was been rape.Do you just watch it and said Well who Am I to judge.

This is exactly my point.  If this is a case of adultery, or sexual pecadillo between two consenting adults, quote me a verse and I'll join you in prayer, because even Jesus said we who lust in our minds are guilty of the same. But sexual abuse of minors is a criminal offense! From the personal feedbacks I received about Skelton, it seems the Tagbilaran diocese really has a lot of explaining to do.

Hi Lorenzo,

You're right. In fact, the same study states that "this 2 to 5% figure is consistent with male clergy from other religious traditions and is lower than the general adult male population that is best estimated to be closer to 8%."

I am not saying that the 2 to 5% robed miscreants represent the Catholic Church, or churches of other religious traditions for that matter, any more than the 8% male perverts in the general population represent the male population--including you and me.

My point is simply that one sexually abused child is one too many. And this study indicates that 3,000 priests have engaged in sexual relations with minors. So how many minors do you imagine have been abused already?

Sorry, I have not read of any recommendations and stance of the Tagbilaran Diocese yet. This thread should be closed if the Bishop gives a satisfactory clarification on the matter.

Quote from: Lorenzo on November 04, 2009, 03:29:20 PM
2-5 % is a small minority compared to the 95-98% that are innocent of these crimes.

That 2-5% who have allowed their sins to take the best of them do not and will not represent the Roman Catholic Church. The minority does not represent the majority.

The Roman Catholic Church reprimands the priests that have committed such transgressions. So that it will not impede in ministering the Word of God to the faithful.
---

I think the recommendations and stance of the Tagbilaran Diocese is quite respectable, and stands in compliance with the Roman Catholic Church Dioceses around the world.

I stand with our priests.
God Bless them. May their tribes increase.

Day Mist,

Akong ikatambag nimo aron magpuyo ug magbinuotan si Mister, in essence, is to remember that it takes two to tango.

1. Be sure he is really the guy. If you have decided that he is the guy, you will stick with him despite the imperfections that you will certainly discover, or discover more of.

2. Let go of the past. This is your married life, not your mother's. Sa counselling namo bag-o mi nagpakasal 18 years ago, nitug-an ko sa pastor nga I would do anything not to be like my father--nga naa'y babaye, nagbisyo'g sigarilyo ug inom, kulang pirmi ang kita... Iyang tambag nako, learn from the past, but don't be tied to it by making it your point of reference in your present life. So don't even make your husband feel that you are pressured to make your marital project a success because you don't want a repeat of your mother's experience. Your marriage is unique, you will encounter your own particular challenges. Don't make things more complicated by adding onto it the baggage of the past.

3. Always build up your husband's confidence to provide for you, to take care of you and your children. Always make him feel like he is the family man. Ang nothing breaks a man down than attacking his sense of control or ability frontally. Naa'y mga lalaki nga manimalos by attacking your emotional security--usahay mangabit aron lang ipabatyag ang kasakit sa pulong sa iyang asawa.

Most of all, never give an impression of starting a professional or career rivalry. Labing maayo kung home-based business. Hilig man ka ug internet, basig pwede related ani. Kung posible, kanang naa gyud mo'y mealtime together once or twice a day.

5. The most important human relationship is between husband and wife. Mas importante ang relasyon sa asawa ug bana kaysa asawa ug anak, in-laws, amigo, boss, etc. You should not allow anybody or any other relationship to get between you and your spouse. If you have to remind him, don't nag, don't pin him down, don't make him feel like a loser. Sometimes silence for a man is more golden than any word of wisdom--if it builds up his self-respect and self-confidence.

Nagwali na diay ko, Bay Hubs? Naa pa'y mas eksperto nato niana. To give us a clinical perspective of this problem, diri lang sa ta sa study conducted in the US by Thomas Plante, Ph.D., ABPP, Department of Psychology, Santa Clara University, in his book Bless Me Father for I Have Sinned: Perspectives on Sexual Abuse Committed by Roman Catholic Priests:

  • 2 ~5% of priests have had a sexual experience with a minor (i.e., anyone under the age of 18)
  • this means in the US alone, 1,000 ~ 3,000 priests have sexually engaged with minors
  • 80 ~ 90% of all priests who in fact abuse minors have sexually engaged with adolescent boys not prepubescent children
  • the vast majority of priests who sexually abuse minors commit their first offense about 1 year after ordination
  • about 70% of offending clergy have been sexually abused as children too

The Tagbilaran Diocese can benefit from the practical recommendations of this study:

  • All applicants to priesthood can participate in a comprehensive psychological evaluation prior to admission to seminary. Sexual abuse risk factors can be examined closely.
  • Anyone accused of sexual misbehavior can be immediately put on administrative leave and evaluated by a trained mental health professional.
  • If illegal behavior has occurred then legal authorities should be contacted.
  • Clergy found to have been sexually involved with minors should get treatment and not be allowed to work with children and families again without very close supervision and successful treatment that helps them control (but not likely cure) their impulses.
  • Victims should be treated with respect and compassion and helped to receive appropriate treatment and support.

Thomas Plante is a Professor and Chair of Psychology at Santa Clara University as well as a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.

WE all have unspeakable sins. We all fall short of the glory of God. That is why it is not for anyone to judge another sinner.

Paul exemplifies God's transformative handiwork. He was not ashamed to confess his past and refer to himself as the "worst of all sinners", "rubbish" and "a pot of clay" because when he met Christ in a blinding flash, he was changed forever. Over the years, I have met in our church circles people who were formerly self-confessed drug addicts, philanderers, cons, pickpockets--what-have-you. Seeing how they have come to terms with an abject past by acknowledging the power of God's grace to change them,  I am mortified by my own sinfulness. Their gloriously changed lives convict me of my own unconfessed sins.

Our God is indeed a God of second chances. Far be it for me to judge Fr. Skelton. I have only two important practical concerns here:

1) The issue of Skelton's personal misrepresentation. Bishop Medroso should clarify if he was indeed informed of Skelton's criminal conviction in the US, but ordained him nonetheless because he has objectively assessed that Fr. Skelton has totally reformed through rehabilitative and counselling program. Did Skelton himself tell the bishop about his criminal history in the US? In a serious case like pedophilia, it is one thing for us to hope that a perpetrator change, it is another thing for the perpetrator himself to voluntarily subject himself to a professional reform program.

2) The issue of assigning him to a ministry or activity that puts him in contact with youngsters, who share the profile of victims of his previous repeat offenses. This is only common sense, and the Church should never relegate the welfare of the youth to second priority.  As a parent, I would rather be cautious than sorry for my children.

No wonder that Jesus has always preached about love, forgiveness, and loving one's enemies, but his message of grace does not cover those who sin against the innocent ones.

Mark 9:42 "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck."

I would like to believe that Jesus meant this as a metaphor and a hyperbole. But those who preach from the moral high ground of the pulpit should take this literally.

Long ago nakadungog kog estorya nga ingon ani, from a close friend who would have no reason to invent such a sordid story. Diha kuno sijay auntie nga relihiyosa lagi kaajo, and ijang anak lalaki nga 12 anyos gipapujo sa kombento aron lagi kuno magdako duol sa Diyos. It turned out that the priest was a pervert, luoy kaajo ang bata kay magkadugo god kuno intawon. Kausa gitabang ang bata, gidala sa hospital. Ang bata siging hilak kay gustong mopauli. Gikasab-an man hinuon sa inahan nga wala motuo sa estorya sa ijang anak (ug sa uban pud nga nasajod sa kamatuoran), in spite of the boy's anal lacerations for which she, unthinkably, had her own explanations. The rest is history--the boy grew up to perpetuate the cycle of abuse.

Mao bitaw nga ang Pilipinas haven for pedophiles and sexual predators, kay poverty is the greatest accomplice of crime. Tinuod gyud ka Belle, poor families have traded the psychological and emotional well-being of their victimized children for the material benefits given by robed exploiters. Sa Pilipinas, you cannot expect the poor victims to step forward and clamor for the Church's moral accountability on this issue--it's all about the 'do' and the 'dough'. But we can, and the media can.

I knew some kids my age before nga murag gina maintain sa pari but for us it was just like normal! we never thought it was an abuse, kay pari lagi and besides wa man sila ning reklamo kay hayahay man ilang kinabuhi sa kumbento with that priest! But you know what? daghan ra baja gihapon manimba. Murag di man na law-ay namo sa una!

Karon kani si Skelton di man nato mabaw-an sad kay wa may ning reklamo. Who would? mostly ang mga parents man ang mo reklamo unta ani? but none. Pwere lang sa mga maayo nga parents, some parents mao pa man gani mo push sa ilang anak closer to the clergy, kay hayahay gud.

Do you remember the recent movie ni  Meryl Streep nga DOUBT? tan-awa. Therefore sa atoa nga sitwasyon, do you think naay moreklamo? wala mao ning lungtad na si Skelton diha.

Klaro man gud and concern ni Bay Ben for eventualities. Whether such eventualites are indeed likely, there appears to be neither confirmation nor denial in Bay Koddi's rejoinder. Though inclusive and sweeping, safe jamo ang ijang comment. Jesuitic would be a good word for it. Peace, Bay Kodz! ;D

Given the uproar that sexual abuse by the clergy has generated in North America, leading to the purge of pedophiles and other sexual predators disguised in holy robes in the churches' sanctums, it's bewildering that no case has been prosecuted in our country, given the rampancy of these crimes as Anna and Koddi state here.

It's really disturbing when our attitude towards sexual abuse by the clergy is that of indifference, or wry acceptance of a heaven-ordained anomaly of social justice--given a passing mention only in drunken toasts of local tambays. We who are sober should call the local church leadership into account for this.

When Bishop Leonardo Medroso speaks on the Church-defined social moral issues such as reproductive health bill, his voice reverberates throughout the country from his unhampered platform on the pulpit. But when a social moral issue involving the church itself is raised, we only hear a defeaning silence.

Skelton except through his website in which he describes himself as follows. It seems to me there is a yawning gap in his personal account of his life, especially that part after leaving Detroit. I just accidentally came across him on Youtube about a month ago as I was surfing for gospel songs, and I was really impressed by his musical gift. I am really let down by this news. But as Paul said, God uses people who are like earthen jars in their frailty to manifest His glory. I had just hoped he was less disingenuous about his past, and the diocese had been more open in the interest of the youth.

About Fr. Joseph Skelton

Joseph Skelton

Fr. Joseph Skelton, Jr. is a missionary priest of theDiocese of Tagbilaran in the Province of Bohol, Philippines.

But he was born in the “Motor City” or “Motown” Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Fr. Joseph began following the Lord as a young boy at the age of seven.

He started singing professionally at the age of thirteen with the Michigan Opera Company, and then he went on to sing in many different groups with a variety of musical genres. Gospel Music has been an integral part of Fr. Joseph’s spirituality, putting into practice the old saying: He who sings once, prays twice!

One of the highlights of his life was being “baptized in the Holy Spirit” through which his enthusiasm for the Lord had increased by leaps and bounds even until today.

Fr. Skelton is an advocate of worshiping the Lord through any means. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the central form of worship he promotes but also promotes the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, devotional prayers, and Charismatic revival prayer meetings as well.

Praise and Worship is a type of prayer that involves the whole senses. Through the songs of Praise and Worship gatherings, the people of God can have an experiential encounter with the Living God.

Fr. Joseph regularly travels across the Philippines leading Praise & Worship sessions so that God’s people will receive a flood of blessings from the Lord.

It behooves Bishop Leonardo Medroso to issue a statement on Fr. Skelton's case. Sex offenders who are released after serving sentence or paroled, and have undergone reformative therapy, are barred from work that gets them in touch with those who are profiled as likely victims. This priest has been soliciting invitation from churches and schools around the country, especially among the youth, to join in his praise and worship ministry.

Day misty,

Many former philanderers, drug addicts, rapists, yakuzas, and other criminals who have found light in God's grace stand tall to testify of his mercy without negating their past or misrepresenting their personal history. Ang hadlok man gud, daghan kaayo mga batan-on sa music teams sa mga simbahan diha's ato, Katoliko man o Protestante, nga posibleng naa sa sphere of influence aning paria. I know of victims of sexual abuse of the clergy who are still struggling to make head or tail of their lives long after the abuse has happened.

Given the recent spike in incidents of people posting nasty statements on social networks using stolen identity (the most recent being that of Jackie Bermejo), I think we should take caution against the use of false identity not only in nefarious crimes but also against naughty offenses that lead to similarly great inconvenience.

Bay Cal, I believe I have quoted these very same words to you from BlueAngel. The length that people go through to shake down our sense of safety and comfort even in the supposedly anonymous cyberworld is just astounding.

Having just recently viewed many of Joseph Skelton Jr.'s performances uploaded on Youtube, this was really a big shock. God is infinite in his mercy, and may have already reformed and transformed this singing priest. But given the proven tendency of sex offenders to relapse, Bohol authorities should take heed of this warning.

Bohol priest has skeletons in his closet
The Manila Standard Today

CATHOLIC officials in Detroit claimed they have contacted the Tagbilaran diocese and have made officials there aware of the “criminal history” of the former lay brother who is now a priest in Bohol.

Ned McGrath, Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of Detroit, claimed in a statement published at its Website that they only became recently aware of the ordination of Joseph Skelton Jr. as a priest in Tagbilaran.

He said they were not consulted prior to the ordination but “the Detroit archdiocese has since contacted the bishop of Taglibaran, to whom Skelton reports, regarding the priest’s criminal history in Michigan.”

The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, in a statement published by several Detroit-area newspapers, said people should have been warned that Skelton had once studied at a Catholic seminary in Plymouth, and pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy in his seminary room. He had resigned from the seminary in 1988.

“And this month, a settlement was reached involving allegations that Skelton was involved in the abuse of a 14-year-old boy in Washington, D.C., in 1984, according to attorneys Jessica Arbour and Adam Horowitz,” the Detroit Times reported.

SNAP president Barbara Blaine told newspapers that a letter sent in 2003 warning of Skelton’s history was not enough and that Church officials should do much more. “Kids are safer and the Church is healthier when the truth is exposed.”

But the Detroit archdiocese said in a statement that Skelton had been dismissed from the St. John Provincial Seminary after being accused of sexual misconduct. “Not unlike any other institution of higher learning, the archdiocesan seminary does not track or hold responsibility for every student who ever attended classes but left before ordination.”

Blaine said people should have been warned and wants Catholic leaders to post such allegations on Catholic Web sites and have priests announce publicly names of clergy with accusations of past abuse who are transferred to their dioceses.

Skelton, in his Website, was identified as an accomplished “Praise and Worship Leader and Singer in the Philippines.” The Website said Skelton has joined several recording projects here and in the US and has performed in concerts here.

The Conference theme is Towards a National History: Local History in the context of National History which has all these years been the thrust of PNHS Conferences. The objective of the conference is to look at the research and writing on the Visayas as well as other regions in the archipelago and to situate these studies in the context of national history.

An important lesson of hindsight is that what may seem trivial, random or local in the present may in fact be a critical turning point in our bigger history.

Who would ever think that the seemingly casual warming up of Bool's Datu Sikatuna and Loboc's Datu Sigala to Legazpi's quavery overtures would subsequently lead to Spain's subjugation of the entire archipelago?

In the same way, this sputtering outburst of our disgruntled guests may teach Bohol an important lesson in our quest to be a world-class tourist destination and convention venue.

Bitaw, ngano man napaingon sa sayote ug ginanggang ang hisgutan? The real meat of this confab is the historical discussion. It may have been false modesty for the delegates to opt for the spartan diet, when in fact they really expected a feast. Having perhaps heard of the fabled Boholano hospitality, whose dinner tables supposedly brim with food on special occasions like fiestas, they were simply let down by the sayote menu they surely have often from their backyard.

It is indeed disheartening that what was meant to be an esoteric, lofty discussion of our collective heritage ends up with a fishmonger's squabble of what they and their maids have for lunch.

But let us not downplay this incident. More than anyone else in the academe, historians have been primed to expect much from this gathering, since Bohol is touted not only as a eco-cultural destination but also as a historical landmark.

We really missed this chance to play up this aspect of our island's heritage among people who would be most effective to convey their positive impressions of our island as a living museum to their students.

Having said this, we should move forward and make sure that the next confab will be a historical treat.

We were at the edge of the typhoon path, but the wind was still strong. You could see that Japan prepared for this calamity since the typhoon was first spotted headed in this direction--and issued warnings in advance. In fact, you say Japan's preparation is "overkill." But the result is minimal casualty and minor disruption in its on-the-dot mass transport system, highways and air travel. We can learn a lot from this country.

Not ready for the presidency

The Daily Tribune
EDITORIAL

10/08/2009

Going by the forum meeting between a group of local executives four presidential aspirants, the answers Sen. Noynoy Aquino, the Liberal Party presidential bet, gave the local executives showed clearly that he just isn’t ready for the presidency, and worse, he does not appear to have any understanding of how government works or shouldn’t work, under a system of laws.

The answers he gave to the questions raised by the local executives were much too vague and indirect, offering nothing substantive, probably because he has no position on these issues in the first place or he is plain clueless.

He kept on going about democracy and people power in virtually every answer he gave, two issues which are not the issues at this time, but as he was still evidently following the campaign spiels taken by his mother, former President Corazon Aquino, including the "walang alam" bit which is better than having an experienced one that is corrupt, which criticism had been leveled against his mother, he continues to tread this path, which will hardly resonate with the voters, just as it did not resonate with the local officials present in that forum.

But it has been noted for sometime that Noynoy Aquino, even in media interviews, is always vague and never directly answers the questions and at times, even his answers are off tangent. Mar Roxas has also been noted to "save" the day for Noynoy by explaining what Noynoy meant to say.

Another thing going against Noynoy, no matter what his yellow supporters say, is that he can’t seem to make any decision unless and until he gets his four sisters â€" and their husbands apparently â€" to agree on a decision to be made.

Even when he holds "unity meetings" with other opposition bets, the sisters and their husbands are always present. Can’t he make a decision on his own and make a firm stand on issues? Is his presidency going to be a presidency of five Aquino siblings?

What is, however, surprising is the ignorance of Aquino in local government issues, which should have been right up his alley, given the fact that Aquino is the chairman of the local governments committee.

It was apparent that Noynoy, as chairman, never studied his lessons, nor for that matter, has he even called some kind of hearing â€" even now, with the disaster and the unpreparedness of Malacañang and the local government officials in addressing the needs of the typhoon victims, today being questioned by the public.

All Aquino said, by way of answers to the questions posed by the local governments, was that this and that have to studied first.

A bigger mistake he made was telling the local government executives that he wouldn’t, as president, be giving funds to the local government units that do not perform. But hey, such funds, meaning the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) fund is a must, as the law says the local government executives get 40 percent as IRA. To withhold it is unlawful and not to provide any funds to a non-performing LGU even when it is needed is unconscionable.

Outside of that, no specifics were given, no concrete examples were given on how he, as well as the other presidential bets, will go about their presidency in reforming the system, mainly because they really have no idea on how to bring about reforms, given their varied backgrounds.

If truth be told, none of the presidential aspirants invited to speak at the forum were impressive in their answers, but as all politicians do, they all mouthed motherhood statements, and from the faces of the audience, it was evident that the local officials were hardly impressed by the four presidentiables, with some looking much too bored.

As one former local executive put it, "If all that the candidate can tell us is that he will study it, we’ve been through that already. He has to say and do something good for us and the country."

Noynoy just lost a golden opportunity for him to prove to the nation that he is prepared for the presidency.

He just proved that he isn’t and won’t ever be.

Niingon man ang judge nga, "Since she has no legal representation, can you stand as her lawyer?" First time ko na-promote pagka-abogado. Pero nalipay ko kay ang Pilipina, ma-deport na unta without getting a single cent. After persistent negotiations before the judge--in which I requested for a temporary recess about five times--both sides finally agreed on a court settlement of about US $20,000. Wala ra ba gyud untay makuha ang Pilipina kay nakasal sila sa Pilipinas pero wa man ma-consummate ang ilang spousal relationship because of health problems of the husband. Wala gyud sila nag-ipon bisag usa ka adlaw. Worse, the Filipina ignored all court notices for a year until the final notice which would have effectively deported her without getting a single cent.

Learning other languages made me realize the beauty of our own native tongue--Visayan. First major  Visayan-to-Japanese translation job nako, a documentary filmed by a Japanese production company in a fishing village in Bohol, nagkamangkamang ko pagsabot sa Binisaya, kapin pa nga kusog kaayo ang vernacular accent didtong lugara.

That's why you're named Bene... Italian for "goodaaaah!!!"

Bay Beds,

You need to memorize at least 1400 characters to be able to read a newspaper. Sa translation hinuon, the computer takes care of converting the character. Naa pud mga on-line dictionaries to check for proper word use and idioms, which are the trickiest part in translation.
