Yes, I agree, the Spanish language is as much a part of our national identity as our pre-Hispanic culture and unless we recognize it and accept it we are a people rootless.  Their laws, their religion, their literature, their arts still have a bearing on contemporary culture.  And the importance of español alone as the primary language  in studying our history cannot be undermined.  However, we cannot insist upon other persons who refuse to learn the language because it is not the lingua franca or for the pseudo-patriotic reason that it was the language of the conquistadors (which, of course, begs the question, "Why study English then?").  We can only start with ourselves.

p.s.  I confess to reading only the English translations of the Noli and the Fili and I know that there is always something changed by translation but I trust that Soledad Lacson-Locsin tried to stay true to the spirit and the passion of the originals.

I don't know where it starts but it flows through (and this is not in geographical order because I'm not sure which comes first) Catigbian, Balilihan, Antequera, Maribojoc, and Cortes.

Purportedly, from what I've heard, it is named Abatan because it used to be a place where people would meet (abat) fishing boats and commercial vessels.

I have seen somewhere in TV that these two guys (founder of google, one of them is a Russian immigrant) does'nt even have a car of their own even they are now worth billions. They stick to their philosophy of don't be evil. They go to work & meetings in just T-Shirts and Jeans...

Moreover, I discourage those who are big-eaters.... google has a 24-hour kitchen, food is free and they have the longest list of menu documented in guiness book of world records with chefs and cooks almost equal in number with the programmers. They believe that "a well fed employee is a good employee"... So, beware... you may die of obesity....

Also, google believes that corporates are evil money makers, so their homepage is free from any advertisers unlike yahoo..... palitik akong itlog kung dili tinood.....

Is there a way to work for these guys even if one knows zilch about computers?  Please???

QuoteRizal, en mi opinión, había el pensador político más grande terminado. Rizal era gran poeta, gran filósofo, gran idealista. ¿Sin embargo, usted lo piensa habría diferenciado si él vivió? Smiley

Dispensame mi amigo.  :)  Uhmmm...tengo poco español.   :P  Hablamos en ingles o Binisaya?  ;)

Seriously, I just know some phrases and a few words and I'm not really sure about my conjugations, which is a shame since my father taught and my mother still does teach Spanish.  :-[

Anyway, for one such as Rizal, who felt so much passion for his country and his fellowmen and who would not compromise his ideals, his fate was inevitable.  His life may have ended abruptly but often there is no other way to die for people like him except as a hero.  But, at least, his ideas and ideals have become immortal through us.

I'm a rather recent convert to USB usage.  I had thought micro-floppy disks were fine until the volume of data I needed to transfer became too great to be practicable to continue using them.  One other disadvantage with floppy disks is their susceptibility to magnetism from cellphones and appliances.  Besides, USBs are getting cheaper by the minute.  A 2GB USB that a friend bought for about P3000 over a year ago was sold for P1,200 some months later.  :D

I believe the point is not catching up to the Loboc River Cruise.  The point is promoting another side to Bohol, one that will hopefully involve the tourist in the community life of the Boholano people.

What makes the Loboc River Cruise more sustainable than most, aside from the fact that it has already established itself through the years as a distinct tourism attraction, is that it's on the way to the Loboc-Bilar Manmade Forest and the Chocolate Hills.

The river cruise of Inabanga hopes to be a main feature in the tourism of Bohol's northern corrider, along with the extreme adventure tourism that Danao offers and the agricultural tourism of Ubay.  It is not for us to disparage efforts this early.  What we need to do is build up other eco-cultural tourism sites in the province.

I think it (race/ethnicity) shouldn't matter.  Who among us can lay claim to racial and cultural purity?  White, brown, or black it's just skin color.  I think the question you should be asking yourself is "Can you see yourself living and raising a family with her?"

Ang silak sa adlaw
Nga sayo kaganihang buntag
Ningsulod sa atong lawak
Nga way pananghid
Ug sa tibuok adlaw
Naghatud og kainit ug kalandag,
Hinay-hinay nga mibiya
Sa ganghaan sa kilum-kilum
Ug kalit nga na-wa
Diha sa kagabhion,
Uban kanimo.

Ang tamparos nga kasilak
Gitaban ’sab ang imong kasing-kasing
Ug karon inanay nga nahilis
Ang kadasig sa imong ngabil,
Inanay nga naugdaw
Ang kainit sa imong hapuhap,
Inanay nga namugnaw
Ang kasibot sa imong gakus.

Gitaban ka sa adlaw;
Ikaw ug imong kasing-kasing;
Ug ako diri nahibilin
Inusara nga nagsud-ong
Sa naghulaw nga kagabhion.

As for absolute power corrupting absolutely, I feel that the quote has exceptions.  The quote from Lord Acton goes, "Power tends to corrupt.  And absolute power corrupts absolutely.  Great men have almost always been bad men."

"Almost always" allows for a few exceptions and, as naive as it may seem, I hope Rizal would have been one of them. :)

Quote from: Onicul85 on July 15, 2007, 08:23:45 AM
Sacrifice was already given, my friend. In the form of Beningno Ninoy Aquino. It was his death and unfortunate passing that awakened the millions of Filipinos--seaking justice and democracy---with its mighty wake, the lashes and control of the Marcos administration buckled into the pages of history. If only the Filipino people could maintain our passionate nature and wipe out graft and corruption into a mitigate percentage...

However, I believe that our current administration is doing as much as possible with what little resources we have. So far so good, says I. Let it be incentive for the next presidencies to follow the trend of economic improvement as well as human development index.

Btw, my friend, I am in love with the philosophical and literary works of Sr. Dr. Jose P. Rizal; I actually did a rendition of his 'Ultima Adios' in college for my East Asian History Class. To think...if we had a president as brilliant and as passionate as Sr. Dr. Rizal....

What a nation the Philippines could have been..

But the sacrifice cannot be in the form of a messiah without a corresponding worthiness in the nation and its people.  Otherwise, messiah after messiah will perish for naught.

And if Rizal had been our president he would have exhorted each of us to strive to be great in our aspirations and in our deeds.  "Sic itur ad astra." :)

I am reminded of Fr. Victorino's (I think) words in El Fili, when he said that as long as we reward vice and punish virtue we will continue to suffer.  Indeed, the sacrifice must be pure to be acceptable.

Science and Research / Harry Potter Predictions
July 14, 2007, 08:25:55 PM
Here's something I wrote two years ago and published some months later in lifestylebohol of The Bohol Chronicle just because there was extra space.  I hope it's instructive.  Just note that the predictions were made two years ago and the book will only come out this month, two years later.  :-\  Beware, too, because it's very dark.  There are a lot of deaths here.
(I deleted this from the other Harry Potter thread in this forum because it didn't really fit in.)

Harry Potter Predictions
(as approved by Prof. Sibyll Trelawney)

Next year, the seventh and (purportedly) last of the Harry Potter books will come out.  Being a gifted seer, I have had visions of what this one will be and I will impart them to you now.

However, since some of you may not have yet read the Half-Blood Prince and since I am also a very considerate gifted seer, I shall be discreet with these divinations that I have already shared to Prof. Trelawney and which have met with her pleasure and approval.

Firstly, Harry Potter’s life will be in grave danger.

Together with Ron Weasley, he shall face mortal peril.  This shall be because Mars and Jupiter are in line with the Moon and the stars of Cassiopeia have run off to the Ursa Major with Orion’s Belt.

Hermione Granger will have already died in the first page of the first chapter of the book after suffocating on a hairball coughed up by Crookshanks and just because Prof. Trelawney says so.

There will be no Hogwarts for Potter this year.

His further instruction in the arts of magic will be undertaken by an unrelenting Dobby and a sincerely unwilling Kreacher, who shall ceaselessly beat himself on the head with a club every time he shares magical instructions.

Potter will enlist the help of some members of the Order of the Phoenix to help him in his quest for the horcruxes.  However, this will be unavailing as these members of the Order will all die in their first adventure, overwhelmed by the stench of the accumulated manure of a million blast-ended skrewts and thereafter crushed to death by stampeding hippogriffs.

The position of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher will be abolished as it appears to have been of no discernible use in THE LAST SIX FRIGGIN’ BOOKS, DAMMIT!  However, Peeves will appropriate the title of DADA teacher for himself and he will spend his time dropping Dungbombs and the latest of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes on unsuspecting students, particularly Neville Longbottom, among other pranks.

The identity of the mysterious R.A.B. will be revealed and it will be shown that this very powerful wizard is, in fact, the schizophrenic half of Rubeus Hagrid who, after finishing a correspondence course for a doctoral degree in advanced magic with the Siquijor Advanced School for Barang, has begun to call himself the Anti-Dark Lord Ruus Ar Hegbid.  The note in the locket was just a precaution in case of his death, which, of course, is inevitable.

A trusted member of the Order will betray its secrets to Voldemort.  With everyone despairing and disheartened at this development, Severus Snape will come to save the day…or will he?  Eventually, Snape will be buried and his epitaph will read, “I kept them guessing ’til the very end…or did I?”

A son of a trusted Death Eater will also betray Voldemort’s secrets to Potter, at which the former will be boiled alive in baby oil by Hewhomustnotbenamed and thereafter devoured by toothless werewolves.

As for the loveteams, Ron will hook up with Moaning Myrtle after his eventual death.  Meanwhile, Harry will find the girl of his dreams in Luna Lovegood but they will not live happily ever after since Luna will die, too.

Failing in the quest for the remaining horcruxes, which they assumed after the death of the Order members, Harry Potter and Friends will all perish in their attempt to subdue the singular scourge of the wizarding world.  The best that they will be able to manage is a spell returning Voldemort to infancy and sending him to a tropical country.

Thus, in the end, the Dark Lord Voldemort, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, the Heir of Slytherin who bears same name as his Muggle father, Tom Marvolo Riddle, shall be reborn in the Philippines, where he shall be known by the most fearsome epithet of “Junjun.”

It is interesting Onicul85, that you have a quote from our national hero, Jose Rizal, as your signature.

I am reminded of Fr. Victorino's (I think) words in El Fili, when he said that as long as we reward vice and punish virtue we will continue to suffer.  Indeed, the sacrifice must be pure to be acceptable.

However, I also believe that we can all do our bit to help, the government as well, but we will have to begin with values.

So what do you think should be done about it? Do you think the current administration is doing its job? Not enough?

My knee-jerk answer would be, "No."

But then I think of how thinly spread the government's resources are and I have second-thoughts.  In a country where close to 70% of the budget goes to debt servicing and the bulk of the remaining funds goes into modernizing the armed forces, one can only do so much.  (I once saw a local TV documentary on the state of government hospitals in Samar and Leyte and I could only rage at the helplessness that the doctors and nurses there must feel.)  And then comes graft and corruption.

So then I'd like to think that only a responsible, empowered citizenry is the answer but I realize that most don't even know where the next meal is going to come from.

BITAW! Unya noon, ang mga Koreano (mga Thai pod, no?) gani kay biased kaayo. Didto sa Korea, "NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKERS ONLY" kuno ang ilang dawaton sa mga ESL programs nila. Naa koy nabasahan sa web written in bold letters, "FILIPINOS NEED NOT APPLY." Pungota nako uy. Makalibog, labon manganhi sila sa Pilipinas aron magtuon og English. Way klaro.    :P

I'm sure this is not true of everyone in those countries, and I think the reason for this is because they are trying to copy accents in certain English-speaking countries.  I hope this is the real reason and not racism or bigotry.

Unsa? ang math gihimon tagalog?..... grabe na man pod.... it must have sound funny in class.... so, instead of saying "what is the quare root of nine", the teacher would say "ano ang parehabang ugat nang siyam"... or if the teacher will say the formula of circle is Pie x Radius Squared : the teacher would say "ang sangkap sa paggawa (formula) nang bilog ay Puto or Bibingka (pie) sukat mula gitna (radius) parehaba (squared)"... yes it is true, there are certain words, which we could not possibly translate...

However, I still disagree that English literacy is a measure of good knowledge or education. I read one article about a tribe in a remote region of Central America where they are away from civilization, yet they have their own name of the nine planets and they have thier own calendar system....

Lets go back to China ..... so, if China would become a superpower, I could practice my Chinese knowledge....like "butay - takong - pawa" means coconut... or "do - wan - ting" (do one thing in English)... or "ching - kong - kwang" means you have to give me 5 peso change....

Although "ang sangkap sa paggawa nang bilog ay Puto or Bibingka sukat mula gitna parehaba" had me in stitches, we know that rendering mathematical equations in any vernacular language is not so literal and that PI is still pi in any language.  Using the vernacular in technical fields of science may largely be a matter of getting used to hearing the terms beings so used and mastering their usage, and as to the terms that defy translation let them be as they are.

Today, there are many who can write and speak English, Binisaya, and Tagalog but not well enough to be fluent in one of the three languages or to be artistically expressive in their mother tongue.  Often, it is not the quantity of what one knows that matters.  What is of greater importance is learning something well.

Also, need it be said that there are a considerable number of Americans and other native English speakers who can't spell English words correctly?

Philippine Laws / Re: 91 Million Filipinos (wow)

At the risk of being hypocritical, I have to agree with mfrandsen.

The Church may oppose artificial methods of contraception but it cannot help but do so because of its doctrines.  To say that the Church is responsible for the overpopulation of the Philippines is itself irresponsible.  The matter of population control is something that every Filipino must answer for himself or herself.

Many Filipinos have been Christians by convenience, we follow only what is least disquieting to our schedule and spout biblical passages only when they serve our purpose.  By the same line of reasoning, Filipinos would use artificial methods of birth control, with or without the Church's blessing, if we really wanted to.  If it's convenient.

There have been as many homilies against gambling, against unfaithfulness, and against dishonesty as there have been homilies against contraception but do you see Filipino Christians gambling less, being more faithful to their spouses, and politicians being more honest?  We so quickly raise the defense of contraception being against the Church's teachings when we do not even observe all the other teachings of the Church.

The CIA Factbook says we are now 91 million. Exact Figure: 91,077,287 (July 2007 estimate)

To give you a comparison of our enormous population:

Canada: 33-34 million
Australia: 22-23 million
Switzerland: 6 million

kamo nay sumpay pila mo diha sa inyong respective countries.

I'm just here in Tagbilaran but I learned from a New Zealander that there are only about 4 million of them there.
