hof, i'm out of here.  so sorry.  most of my family/clan members have actually been at it since the day after quake.  those who are somewhere else have sent money, those who are right in bohol are physically doing what needs to be done, like delivering bottled water and food and medical supplies.

they update me on what they're doing, like my sister who spent the whole day lining up in pharmacies just to purchase splinters and big elastic bandages.  it turned out that even the purchase of medical supplies is limited, she can only buy a maximum number of 3 from every pharmacy.  so she had to make the rounds.

her daughter specifically asked for these, as many as possible, because these were needed in her treatment of victims and the hospital had ran out of these particular supplies.

THEATER artist and cultural worker Lutgardo “Gardy” Labad
#17615
He has used the power of social media to appeal for help, not only for emergency supplies for those affected by the quake, but also for the sites of the centuries-old churches and other damaged heritage buildings to be kept secure, to allow cultural workers enough time and space to assess the damage and collect important remnants.

BOHOL’S Antequera, Cortes and Maribojoc Cultural Collectives, formed and trained by Labad, performing at the CCP National Theater Festival 2012

“Let’s do a program for trauma and site assessment,” he exhorted at one point. “This can be a defining moment for all of us. The destruction revealed the level of fragility and vulnerability of our ecology and culture. We need to unite our ranks to address these challenges.”

Tireless advocate

Labad has long been a tireless advocate for the preservation of Bol-anon culture and heritage. A noted musical composer and theater artist, he has directed most of his energies in the last few years helping develop the tourism programs of his home province, centering on its buffet of cultural treasures from historic, well-preserved churches to native food, crafts, music, dance and entertainment harnessed for eco-cultural activities such as the Abatan River Community Life Tour.

“We wanted to get back home as swiftly as we could, but we were prevailed upon to stay because we needed to accomplish our commitments to the Filipino community here in Dubai,” said Labad in an e-mail.

“I rushed to Facebook and and saw the first pictures of the devastationâ€"first, Loboc Church, then Baclayon, Maribojoc, Loon, all pulverized to the ground. I wept. It is not only the damage to physical structures that was devastating. It’s the damage to the soul and heartâ€"our history, our values, our heritage,” said Labad.

“The years of conservation work, all gone to naught,” he added. “The work of national cultural agencies, especially the efforts of Fr. Ted Torralba, who facilitated the documentation of our ecclesiastical heritage, leading to their declaration as national landmarks and national cultural treasures. So much beauty, so much artistic magnificence wiped out in an instant.”

Gardy Labad grieves for his beloved Bohol

By Amadís Ma. Guerrero
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Saturday, October 19th, 2013

It was 6 a.m. in Dubai when Lutgardo “Gardy” Labad first heard the worrying news. He was up early to prepare for a drama workshop he was conducting for the OFW community there. A cousin of his texted that a strong earthquake had struck Bohol, and that the floor in their ancestral house had cracked.

IN FRONT OF Baclayon Church, and by the altar of Loboc Churchâ€"two centuries-old churches, among the oldest in the Philippines, heavily damaged by the earthquake that struck Bohol this week. “Bohol lost the material symbols of its inner life, its soul and spirit,” says Labad. “These churches were landmarks and icons of our deepest beliefs and spirituality. The cultural genius behind these monuments revealed our people’s innate artistry, our determination to build structures for our faith, our creative adaptation to our climate and our sense of history.”

However a critic of Copp has stated that this was a rescue exercise rather than an experiment. Additionally the exercise did not simulate the lateral movement of earthquakes, instead causing a pancake collapse which are more common in areas of extremely poor construction and rare in developed countries so these results are highly misleading.
#17623
Testing

In 1996, Copp claims to have made a film to prove this methodology and to have recreated a model school and home, filling them with 20 mannequins. The buildings were collapsed by earthmoving equipment that knocked the supporting pillars out. Half the mannequins were in 'duck and cover' positions and the others in what Copp calls the 'triangle of life' positions. When Copp and his crew re-entered the building after the blast, they calculated that there would have been no survivors among the mannequins in 'duck and cover' positions, as against 100% survival for those hiding in the triangles beside solid objects. Copp is categorical about the importance of this technique, saying "Everyone who simply ducks and covers when buildings collapse is crushed to death - every time without exception."
#17624
A peer-reviewed article analyzed and compared both methods in detail, considering their application, the extent of people who are under the coverage, simplicity in transferring concepts, and the probability of reducing casualties and damage in developing countries such as Iran. It argued that "Drop, Cover and Hold on" was useful advice for people who experience smaller earthquakes without total building collapse, which is the vast majority of earthquake survivors. It found that the "Triangle of life" could be a better strategy during larger earthquakes in buildings with a skeleton (wood or concrete) during a building collapse, but acknowledged the possible problems of large objects shifting and crushing the person from horizontal movement, and the triangle method is also difficult to teach and communicate. Neither strategy was useful for the majority of the population in rural Iran because of the mud-brick architecture which has no structure. Based on the simplicity of teaching and the fact that 12,000 times more people are affected by smaller earthquakes and injured, they concluded that duck and cover is still regarded as a better option for people during an earthquake.
#17625
Also, given that there are no warnings for earthquakes, you are more likely to be injured trying to move during an earthquake rather than immediately seeking a safe space by furniture, or near an interior wall, not doorways, as they are often not structural. Different architectural standards in different countries mean that the best strategy for earthquake survival could also differ, however for the U.S., "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is recommended.
#17626
Criticisms

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Triangle of Life is a misguided idea about the best location a person should try to occupy during an earthquake. Critics have argued that it is actually very difficult to know where these triangles will be formed, as objects (including large, heavy objects) often move around during earthquakes. It is also argued that this movement means that lying beside heavy objects is very dangerous. Statistical studies of earthquake deaths show most injuries/deaths occur due to falling objects, not structures.
#17627
Officials of many agencies, including the American Red Cross and the United States Geological Survey, have criticized the "Triangle of Life" theory, saying that it is a "misguided idea" and inappropriate for countries with modern building construction standards where total building collapse is unlikely.

Theory

According to Copp's theory, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside tends to crush them, but the height of the object that remains acts as a kind of roof beam over the space or void next to it, which will tend to end up with a sloping roof over it. Copp terms this space for survival as the triangle of life. The larger and stronger the object, the less it will compact; the less it compacts, the larger the void next to it will be. Such triangles are the most common shape to be found in a collapsed building.
#17628
Triangle of Life
From Wikipedia

The Triangle of Life is a controversial theory about how to survive a major earthquake, typically promoted via viral emails.

The theory advocates methods of protection very different from the mainstream advice of "drop, cover, and hold on" method widely supported by reputable agencies. In particular, the method's developer and key proponent, Doug Copp, recommends that at the onset of a major earthquake, building occupants should seek shelter near solid items that will provide a protective space, a void or space that could prevent injury or permit survival in the event of a major structural failure, a "pancake collapse", and specifiably advises against sheltering under tables.

Spread the word and save someone’s life… The entire world is experiencing natural calamities so be prepared! ‘We are but angels with one wing, it takes two to fly.’

In 1996 we made a film, which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of Istanbul Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did ‘duck and cover,’ and ten mannequins I used in my ‘triangle of life’ survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions, relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the ‘triangle of life.’ This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA, Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.
#17631
7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different ‘moment of frequency’ (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads â€" horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn’t collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8 ) Get near the outer walls of buildings or outside of them if possible â€" It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.
#17632
5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!
#17633
3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks. Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.
#17634
TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply ‘ducks and covers’ when building collapse are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a bed, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.
#17635
If you are inside a vehicle, come out and sit or lie down next to it. If something falls on the vehicle, it will leave an empty space along the sides. See below:

#17636
Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them â€" NOT under them. This space is what I call the ‘triangle of life’. The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the ‘triangles’ you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP’S ARTICLE ON ‘THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE’

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world’s most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years, and have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under its desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene â€" unnecessary.

Quake power

Phivolcs describes an Intensity VI quake to be very strong where some people lose their balance and motorists feel like driving on flat tires.

An Intensity VI quake can move heavy objects or furniture and can cause cracks on wall plaster, Phivolcs said. It can also cause slight damage to very old or poorly built houses and structures and trees are noticeably shaking.

Magnitude is the measurement of the energy released at the source of the earthquake while intensity quantifies the strength of shaking produced by the temblor.

Verification

Soriano said one of the two Phivolcs teams deployed to Bohol had been tasked to verify the existence of the uncharted fault line, apart from making a hazard assessment in the province.

As of noon Thursday, Phivolcs has recorded 1,328 aftershocks, 27 of which were felt.

The strongest was 5.5 magnitude, which occurred at around 7:37 a.m. on Thursday.

The tremor had a depth of focus of a kilometer and had its epicenter at 18 kilometers northwest of Tagbilaran City.

An Intensity VI tremor was felt in Tagbilaran City; Intensity IV in Dumaguete City and Lapu-Lapu City as well as in Sibulan town in Negros Oriental province.

An Intensity II tremor was felt in Maasin, Southern Leyte province, and Mambajao, Camiguin province.

Uncharted fault line

Meanwhile, Phivolcs science research assistant Karl Vincent Soriano said the movement of the East Bohol fault may not have actually caused the powerful quake that jolted vast areas of the Visayas as well as portions of Southern Luzon and Mindanao on Tuesday.

“Based on our records of aftershocks, the movement of a different and unmapped fault system possibly triggered the 7.2-magnitude earthquake,” he said, adding that the fault system is somewhere between the towns of Sagbayan and Catigbian in Bohol.

“Our initial report that it was likely triggered by the East Bohol fault was based on our map of active faults. This fault system is not yet charted,” Soriano said, adding that limestone areas are extremely difficult for geologists to map.

He explained that limestone is easily weathered so geologists find it difficult to trace previous signs of ground movement that have been “erased.”
#17654
Citing MGB records, Paje said the Chocolate Hills were formed 15 million years ago under water.

The movement of water against coral and limestone shaped Chocolate Hills, he said.

The MGB, Paje added, is verifying the report of a sinkhole somewhere in Cebu that ruptured following Tuesday’s earthquake.

According to the US Geological Survey website, “sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground.”
#17655
Solid limestone

Asked how much of Cebu and Bohol was made of limestone, Paje said the two provinces were almost entirely of solid limestone.

“Bohol’s base is limestone and coral,” he said.

Paje cited some areas of Chocolate Hills in Bohol, the topsoil of which had collapsed.

“The white that appeared is solid limestone. If you would look closely, what was shed off was the topsoil and grass,” he said.
#17656
“It is more than 50 percent complete for the two provinces. The sinkhole mapping has already been completed in Baguio City. It was previously supposed to be due by the end of 2014 but the MGB committed to finish the geohazard mapping within the first quarter of next year,” he said.

Paje said, however, that the local governments of Bohol and Cebu are “very much aware” of the existing sinkholes.
#17657
“[A sinkhole] is always a danger so it is important to identify where it is in an area,” Paje told the Inquirer.

He said sinkholes already existed in most areas of Bohol, Cebu and Baguio City, but were still not apparent.

Vacuum

In a lay person’s view, he said, a sinkhole is a visible, deep depression on the ground. But in geology, “It is a vacuum beneath the ground or top soil waiting for an occurrence (earthquake or heavy rain) to rupture.”

Paje said he had ordered the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) to expedite the geohazard mapping, specifically of sinkholes, in the provinces of Bohol and Cebu.

Bohol, Cebu residents warned vs giant sinkholes

By Jeannette I. Andrade
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Friday, October 18th, 2013

Bohol and Cebu have sinkholes just waiting for heavy rains and floods or earthquakes to collapse and swallow entire towns.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Thursday the 7.2-magnitude earthquake was possibly caused by the movement of a fault line that remained uncharted because of the limestone base of Bohol.

Environment Secretary Ramon Paje said the provinces of Bohol and Cebu, along with Baguio City, had foundations of solid limestone, which had been weathered and carved out naturally through a long period of time, making it prone to sinkholes.

the promise of goodies was more than what they really were, as it turned out.  the real purpose was their "pahayag" (evangelization).  INC "pahayag" aims for an audience, the more, the merrier.  it doesn't matter if the audience is composed of the unwilling and the surprised. any audience is already an accomplishment.  imagine that multitude.  they must be patting their backs now.

and all the trouble for 3 kilos of rice, 3 tins of sardines, and 3 packs of noodles per bag of goodies.  free, fine.  anything that's free is a blessing.  the sad part was in the "invitation", one-on-one by INC members to non-INC ones, the never-say-never kind the persistence of which is sometimes enough for one to give in just to silence a pest.

One report said a couple of churchgoers were inside when the church collapsed.

The Loon church, constructed in 1853 (although the parish was established in 1753), was said to be the most beautiful of the 19thcentury churches in Bohol. It was made from “finely cut coral” based on the design of Domingo Escondrillas, a government engineer.

Among its heritage features are carvings of Biblical text on its columns.

#17691
He said they were waiting for aid from the national government and donor groups, especially ready-to-eat food for the evacuees who fear returning to their homes because of aftershocks.

In addition to the casualties, the Church of the Nuestra Senora de la Luz Parish (Church of Our Lady of Light) was completely destroyed. Pictures of the church, now reduced to rubble, have been circulating online, showing the extent of the devastation caused by the quake.

“The church was totally flattened. There is no more church in that area,” Chatto said.
#17692
Earlier reports said 18 were found dead while a number of people remained trapped inside the Congressman Castillo Memorial Hospital in Loon after its building partially collapsed during the earthquake.

“There are search operations in certain areas where we have been receiving (reports) of people (left buried) that needed to be retrieved like in Loon,” Chatto said.

The governor also said damaged roads and bridges had cut off the towns of Loon and Maribojoc from Bohol’s capital Tagbilaran.

Wednesday, October 16th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines â€" With 20 people dead and a centuries-old church reduced to rubble, Loon town was the hardest-hit by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Bohol on Tuesday morning, Governor Edgar Chatto told Radyo Inquirer 990AM.

“In terms of casualties, Loon (was the most affected),” Chatto said of the biggest town, with a population of more than 40,000, under the 1stdistrict of Bohol.

“Our record now is 20 (fatalities) but because individuals are still being retrieved (the number) may rise to 30,” he added.

meanwhile, i'll let you know whatever it is that i may hear or read, lorenz.  when it comes to churches, the best receiving agency would still be the diocese of tagbilaran, i suppose.  or the parish itself.  those churches have to be rebuilt to its original form, come what may.  heritage philippines is starting to make plans, i gathered somewhere.

Help & Support / Messages re Bohol earthquake from FB
October 16, 2013, 10:02:39 AM
i read the following from a niece who's now in the US:

Dear friends,
Thank you for your concern, your thoughts and your prayers. My family in Bohol is safe, although still terrified. They spent the night outdoors, as did most of the people of the island, for fear of aftershocks that are still occurring. Many lives were lost, and 400-year old stone churches turned to rubble. I will let you know if there is a good way for those of us who are far away to help out with the rebuilding.
