Gardy Labad grieves for his beloved Bohol

By Amadís Ma. Guerrero
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Saturday, October 19th, 2013

It was 6 a.m. in Dubai when Lutgardo “Gardy” Labad first heard the worrying news. He was up early to prepare for a drama workshop he was conducting for the OFW community there. A cousin of his texted that a strong earthquake had struck Bohol, and that the floor in their ancestral house had cracked.

IN FRONT OF Baclayon Church, and by the altar of Loboc Church—two centuries-old churches, among the oldest in the Philippines, heavily damaged by the earthquake that struck Bohol this week. “Bohol lost the material symbols of its inner life, its soul and spirit,” says Labad. “These churches were landmarks and icons of our deepest beliefs and spirituality. The cultural genius behind these monuments revealed our people’s innate artistry, our determination to build structures for our faith, our creative adaptation to our climate and our sense of history.”

“I rushed to Facebook and and saw the first pictures of the devastation—first, Loboc Church, then Baclayon, Maribojoc, Loon, all pulverized to the ground. I wept. It is not only the damage to physical structures that was devastating. It’s the damage to the soul and heart—our history, our values, our heritage,” said Labad.

“The years of conservation work, all gone to naught,” he added. “The work of national cultural agencies, especially the efforts of Fr. Ted Torralba, who facilitated the documentation of our ecclesiastical heritage, leading to their declaration as national landmarks and national cultural treasures. So much beauty, so much artistic magnificence wiped out in an instant.”

Tireless advocate

Labad has long been a tireless advocate for the preservation of Bol-anon culture and heritage. A noted musical composer and theater artist, he has directed most of his energies in the last few years helping develop the tourism programs of his home province, centering on its buffet of cultural treasures from historic, well-preserved churches to native food, crafts, music, dance and entertainment harnessed for eco-cultural activities such as the Abatan River Community Life Tour.

“We wanted to get back home as swiftly as we could, but we were prevailed upon to stay because we needed to accomplish our commitments to the Filipino community here in Dubai,” said Labad in an e-mail.

He has used the power of social media to appeal for help, not only for emergency supplies for those affected by the quake, but also for the sites of the centuries-old churches and other damaged heritage buildings to be kept secure, to allow cultural workers enough time and space to assess the damage and collect important remnants.

BOHOL’S Antequera, Cortes and Maribojoc Cultural Collectives, formed and trained by Labad, performing at the CCP National Theater Festival 2012

“Let’s do a program for trauma and site assessment,” he exhorted at one point. “This can be a defining moment for all of us. The destruction revealed the level of fragility and vulnerability of our ecology and culture. We need to unite our ranks to address these challenges.”

[Another personality I met was] Gardy Labad the “indefatigable champion of Visayan Culture, a seven-time FAMAS Award winner and Hall of Fame Awardee for music.” He is the current project director of LIHOK Bisaya and the recently concluded TANGHALAN, a NCCA-National Committee for Dramatic Arts Theater Aesthetic Review project that encompasses Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila. He is regarded as a theater-pedagogue par excellence.

The Ramasolas did most of the restoration for the art works inside the church of Maribojoc. Now it is all gone with the wind. And all I have are the memories. I was an altar boy until I graduated from high school. Gone, everything is gone, and my heart is aching.

All the money in the world cannot restore the priceless relics from a bygone age. Pagbuot tanan sa GINOO. Sakit man pero kinhangang dawaton. My children cannot see it anymore. I grieve for my beloved Maribojoc.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done: on earth as it is in heaven.

The altar of Maribojoc church.
The crucifix you see hanging was made by the late Ponciano Ramasola Sr, Nong Anoy. Naka kita jud ko together with Bocats pag gama ani. Kaming duha ni Bocats mga bata pa. We saw it being made. Permero gahimo si Nong Anoy ug statue of Christ out of molten candles. Then he made concrete molds. Unja gi butangan ug sawdust mixed with glue ang molds. Human gi tibook. The statue of Christ was hollow inside. Dili sija solid. It was so beautiful. I hope the concrete molds are still there. Maybe I can ask my friend Yoyon, Ponciano Ramasola of the Ramasola Super Art Studio of Tagbilaran to reconstruct it.

I talked to my aunt who works with the DILG. The DILG is working actively and tirelessly right now with the provincial government as well as the national government to administer relief efforts throughout the affected areas, not limited to: Loon, Maribojoc, Inabangga, Lila, Loay, Dauis, Baclayon etc. I know that my aunt had talked with Mar Roxas as well as talked to President Aquino on the ground.

Bohol, from what i heard, has been truly hit hard. The cost to restore bridges, roads and local infrastructure will cost around 500 Million Pesos. As for the churches, that will be a church expense as they are not part of the government. However historical treasures could be funded. Bohol, right now, is thankful.

Many volunteers from Cebu are flocking to Bohol. Thanks to the doctors, nurses, medical reps, and human services volunteers from CEBU, NEGROS, LEYTE, MINDANAO who are coming to Bohol in the waves.

GOD BLESS BOHOL.

We are actively seeking donations and help. If you can help, volunteer and send relief aid and goods (food !) do so at the local red cross or at the Diocese of Tagbilaran. May God bless us.

Thanks should be given to all the tireless efforts of the volunteers in Bohol. The civilian volunteers, the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical reps, paramedics, nursing students, medical students, physical therapy students who are volunteering their times. Bravo. My cousins who are medical doctors, nurses, and volunteering in treating patients in the ground ... I commend to them a lot. I will do what I can to help the victims in areas that are not direct as they. I only hope and pray that many others who will donate in the form of relief goods, medical supplies and finances can do so with a generous heart. May God bless all of us!

I think, that after all of these destructive effects, it manifests the honorable and admirable character of the BOHOLANO. We, in the end, thanks God, come together to help each other and our people. May God sustain this.

Life is too short. Life's unexpected variables are unpredictable. We should all show our Love to each other, our family and relatives, our loved ones and friends.
