The bodies of two Filipino seamen who perished in a ship collision off Kobe, Japan on Sunday will be repatriated Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.

DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said that according to Philippine consul general Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez in Osaka, the remains of the seamen will arrive around 1:30 p.m. on board a Philippine Airlines flight.

Cristobal did not name the fatalities.

The DFA added that the Japanese coast guard's investigation into the collision is ongoing. It added that the booking of the flight of the five other Filipinos who survived the tragedy is tentative.

The Filipino community in the Kansai region, meanwhile, has been providing support for the Filipino survivors, the DFA added.

Japanese officials, meanwhile, have decided to end the large-scale search and rescue operations for the two Filipinos who remained missing as of Monday night.

Three vessels collided Wednesday last week in the Akashi Strait, part of Japan's Inland Sea. A 1,466-ton Belizean cargo ship with nine Filipino crew on board sank.

No one was hurt on the other two ships, an oil tanker and a small boat.

The body of a Filipino ship captain was recovered after it was pulled in by a fishing boat in its trawl net, He was the second Filipino fatality in the accident. Another Filipino crew member was rescued Wednesday but later died in a nearby hospital.

Collisions are common in the Akashi Strait, one of Japan's busiest bodies of water that links major cities in western Japan with the Pacific Ocean.

Filipino ring gladiator and national treasure Manny Pacquiao steps into the ring tomorrow determined to finish some unfinished business when he engages WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight fans dream rematch before a sell-out crowd at the plush Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao said later he “couldn’t believe it” even as celebrated trainer Freddie Roach told HBO Sports that after the “three knockdowns in the first round I thought the fight was over.”

Both Pacquiao and Marquez made it clear they didn’t want Joe Cortez who refereed their first clash and also the first Pacquiao-Erik “El Terrible” Morales battle to be appointed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission which apparently took their sentiments into consideration and named Kenny Bayless who handled Pacquiao-Morales II as the third man in the ring.

After going their separate ways with Pacquiao opting to stick with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and Marquez leaving Arum and joining Golden Boy Promotions after Arum junked a planned rematch with Pacquiao for the first fight in an epic trilogy between Erik “El Terrible” Morales and Pacquiao, the two sides have finally got what they both longed for â€" a chance to finish some “Unfinished Business.”

The fight card will be telecast by Solar Sports in cooperation with GMA 7 and will also be shown on pay-per-view over Dream Satellite TV and in several theaters throughout the country.

The nation’s life is certain to grind to a halt as fight fans, families and friends gather around television sets in their homes or public venues to watch the Philippines most popular personality by far, strive once again to enhance the pride and glory he brings to the country even as he continues to appeal for national unity.

The fight may be just as difficult as achieving national unity. A poll among twenty experts handpicked by the “Bible” of boxing Ring Magazine was dead even, 10-10, with Pacquiao evening it up through the magazine’s Philippine correspondent Ted Lerner and this reporter picking Pacquiao to win. But while the Ring chosen experts were deadlocked, the magazine’s respected editor-in-chief Nigel Collins predicted that Pacquiao, being the great fighter he is will win “convincingly” over a very good fighter, Marquez.

Among those who have regularly visited the Wild Card Gym to provide Pacquiao with moral support have been Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, the “Living Legend” of Philippine basketball, former Sen. Robert Jaworski and the Filipino member of the hit group Black Eyed Peas Apple Pineda.

Also expected to be at special ringside aside from Jaworski will be his brother-in-law Sen. Bong Revilla and a host of other government officials led by Vice president Noli De Castro and Speaker Prospero Nograles.

Golden Boy Promotions vice president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez says Marquez has “mentally prepared like there’s no tomorrow” for the rematch which will be telecast by Solar Sports in cooperation with GMA 7.

On the eve of the fight Gomez told Viva Sports/Manila Standard, “obviously Marquez feels he has the advantage because to him its do or die. He’s got to win this fight if not, there’s nothing after this.” For Pacquiao he’s got bigger and better things while for Marquez it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

Meanwhile, The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has declared a seven-hour unilateral ceasefire in its campaign against communist insurgents on Sunday to give troops time to watch the fight of boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, the chief of staff said.

The suspension of offensive military operations (SOMO) will start at 8 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m., General Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said in a phone interview Saturday.

"I suggest that they also watch the fight," Esperon said jokingly of the communist New People's Army (NPA).

Esperon said he declared a SOMO so that "the conduct of soldiers is clear" during Pacquiao's bout with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. He said the AFP declared an "informal" SOMO during Pacquiao's last fight in 2007.

"To tell you the truth, we will all be watching the fight because Pacquiao is a soldier. Rather than not knowing what to do, we decided to declare the SOMO," Esperon said.

That is really wonderful, Brownman. Kanang holy week, it not only celebrates the life, works, message, and death and rise of Jesus Christ. But also, it makes a sense of 'community' for everyone in every municipality diba? People from every barrio, every barangay, come down to the local church to give praises jud. Its so beautiful jud, because you know this phenomenon has been going on since the beginning of our christian faith.

The early church fathers, in what is now Judea, in coptic egypt and in the early roman empire would celebrate easter and holy week. Their faith was strong, seeing themselves as soldiers of christ and followers of the true word and traditions with it. For 2000 years we have kept and practiced our faith, and our traditions which stems back to ancient of days. This sense of 'community' is what links our church and our faith; not only in Philippines, but in Latin America, Africa, Europe, Middle East etc.

Very heart warming jud.
I've been to a Santo semana when I was younger with my Lolo and Lola in Valencia.
Everyone, from the bukid, to the plains to the urbanos came to church, and there was a feast for the people. Daghaan kaayo ang tawo. It was if all of Valencia was there, some 10,000+ people to celebrate mass. When the church was filled, there were still people outside the church, standing and listening to the word and message of the priest. And to think, every single one of us there was called to visit His House by the Holy Spirit.

God Truly Is Present in our hearts :)

Yup Bran, what i knew wala nay makalupig sa pag celebrate nato sa simana santa diri sa probinsya kumpara sa laing lugar, i thought this was one of the good teaching we'ved
inherited from the Spaniards.

His Excellency Pres Carlos P. Garcia

Carlos Polistico Garcia (November 4, 1896 â€" June 14, 1971) was the 8th president of the Philippines (1957-1961). His administration was known for its "Filipino First" policy, which put the interests of the Filipino people above those of foreigners and of the ruling party.

Early life and career
Garcia was born in Talibon, Bohol to Policronio Garcia and Ambrosia Polistico (who were both natives of Bangued, Abra). He grew up with politics, with his father serving as a municipal mayor for four terms.

Garcia acquired his primary education in his native Talibon, then took his secondary education in Cebu Provincial High School. He briefly took law courses at Silliman University in Dumaguete City. He then studied in Philippine Law School and earned his degree in 1923. He was among the top ten in the bar examination.

Rather than practice law right away, he worked as a teacher for two years at Bohol Provincial High School. He became famous for his poetry in Bohol, where he earned the nickname "Prince of Visayan Poets" and the "Bard from Bohol".

He started his political career in 1925, scoring an impressive victory running for congressman representing the third district of Bohol. He was elected for another term, but served only until 1931 when he successfully ran for governor of Bohol. He served as provincial governor for two terms. He became a member of the congress in 1946, and was elected three times to the senate for three consecutive terms from 1941 to 1953.

Garcia was the running mate of Ramon Magsaysay in the presidential election of 1953. He was appointed Secretary of Foreign Affairs by President Ramon Magsaysay, for four years concurrently serving as vice-president.

Presidency
He assumed the presidency after Ramón Magsaysay died in a plane crash on March 17, 1957, and was elected later the same year, in the Election 1957, to a full term.

During his administration, he acted on the Bohlenâ€"Serrano Agreement which shortened the lease of the US Bases from 99 years to 25 years and made it renewable after every five years. He also exercised the Filipino First Policy, for which he was known. This policy heavily favored Filipino businessmen over foreign investors. He was also responsible for changes in retail trade which greatly affected the Chinese businessmen in the country. He also made a program focused on thriftiness.

At the end of his second term, he ran for reâ€"election in the Election 1961 in November 1961, but was defeated by Diosdado Macapagal, who served as Vice-President under him, but belonged to the opposing Liberal Party - in the Philippines the President and the Vice-President are elected separately.

Post-presidency

The lone star in the Flag of Bohol represents Carlos P. GarciaAfter his failed reâ€"election bid, Garcia then retired to private life, living as a private citizen in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. On June 1, 1971, Garcia was elected delegate of the 1971 Constitutional Convention and chosen as its president. However, he died of a heart attack on June 14, 1971 at the age of seventy-five.

He is featured as the lone star in the Bohol provincial flag as the only Philippine President produced by the province. Another star shall be added for every Boholano who shall also become president of the Philippines.

Here easter is not celebrated the same way as we cellebrate back in the states. Graduation is the same week for 3 of my kids, and with it being crisis I am not so sure too many can enjoy the holweek as the graduation fees are running at a minimum of 3000 piso per student just for exspenses alone.
The sad thing is paying for a paper diploma and nothing to protect it such as vinyl cover book.

The diploma converted to merican money cost $6.00 this year for high school students
aulumni is $10.00, and toga isaround 18.00 dollars and speakers dinner cost each student around P450.00 sheesh and no meals or snacks fo the graduates makes me wonder just what kind of a meal he is eating at that price multiplied by so many students.
yearbook cost p750.00 and so on and if you do not pay all you can not take the final and graduate.......................OMG!
Thats how we in Tagbilaran with graduating students are cellebrating our holyweek by paying for the graduation four days later to hapen on the 27th of March!

I didn't see observance of Holy Week here in the USA as much as we do in our family there in Bohol.  Here there is commercialization of this Holiday.  The stores are filled with Easter stuff like all the eggs and bunnies and stuff.

Our younger sister is also graduating her second college course on the 29th!  So to all the graduates, congratulations!

I dont like it too Tiya!

In fact this should be the biggest celebration in the world...

Easter and not even Good Friday...

The Ressurection and not the death di ba?

Anyhow, Yet, thanks for the info, that reminded me of my childhood, when we only ate binignit with buwad!

do remember Ms Belle during holy week labi sa Huwebes ug Byernes Santo my lolo told me nga bawal kuno maligo ug manilhig kay mao man nay tradition sa mga kinaraang panahun piro karun sa mga bag-ohayng tubo murag wala na nila guisunud. what is the spiritual lesson behind is that from our respective families especially in the provence going towards to the churches in our local areas catholics devotees do observed & celebrated this ocassion solemnly in obsevance of the holy week.

   Janina

Newly-crowned Binibining Pilipinas-World winner Janina San Miguel is unfazed by intense criticism of her lousy grammar during the competition's question and answer portion.

A YouTube clip showing her verbal faux pas on national television has already passed the half-million mark in views, and the comments about the clip fairly sizzle with scathing remarks ridiculing her. Many of those comments, however, were also written in atrocious grammar as well.

San Miguel told ABS-CBN's Star Patrol however, that she remains proud of her achievement and said it's not such a far cry from the accomplishment of her idol, the equally linguistically-challenged Melanie Marquez, who launched a successful showbiz career after winning the 1979 Miss International title.

Marquez, who delivers her malapropisms with aplomb and inexplicable dignity, even authored a book collecting her best quotes, titled "Don't Judge Me, I'm Not a Book".

Two choice quotes from that volume include "I will not stoop down to my level" and "I don't eat meat. I'm not a carnival." She meant "carnivore", of course.

Broadcast ambition
The 17-year-old San MIguel said that she aspires to a career in broadcast journalism, the reason for her taking up a course in mass communications at the University of the East.

"Kaya nga po ako nagte-take ng broadcasting, more than willing ako matuto ng English, kasi gusto ko maging reporter gaya nyo," she told Star Patrol's Marie Lozano in Taglish.

(That's why I'm taking up broadcasting. I'm more than willing to learn English because I want to be a reporter like you.)

San Miguel said that she now laughs off what happened, explaining that part of her problem in answering the question from pageant juror Vivienne Tan was that she didn't hear the query quite clearly.

"Ang narinig ko lang 'family' at 'pageant' (I only heard 'family' and 'pageant')," she said.

Tan had asked San Miguel what role her family had played in her (San Miguel) decision to join the pageant.

Nevertheless, San Miguel said that she is dead set on bringing honor to the country once she vies for the Miss World Pageant which is scheduled in seven months.

She said that what happened to her is a truly unforgettable experience.

"Wala po, history na po yun. History na po...at ako yun (That's all right, it's part of history. It's history... and it's me)," she said.

Let's hope she meant that she's part of history and not, well, hist

Amazing Filipinos succeed all over the world, especially in the music industry. Michael Chaves is yet another testament to the truth of this. Chaves is a band member of American pop singer and actress Mandy Moore, who popularized the songs "Cry", "Only Hope", and "I Wanna Be With You".

Chaves is the lead guitarist of Moore's band. He started his career in 1996 with Duncan Sheik, who popularized the songs "Barely Breathing and "Wishful Thinking." He then worked for a couple of years with John Mayer, who is behind the song "Your Body is a Wonderland".

He had been in US tours with singer-actress Hilary Duff. He also joined the band Five For Fighting before he started working with Moore in January of last year.

Chaves shared in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN that his parents raised him with music.

Chaves, who hails from Mindanao, said he is proud to be Filipino, and that it is a major reason for him to strive harder in a foreign land.

In Chaves' official website, he wrote that he is a musician in the studio and on the road and if anyone needs someone to make them music, he is there.

When asked whom he thinks are the Pinoy artists who could make it in the international music scene, Chaves said: "Bamboo."

Chaves, whose parents are both from Mindanao, cannot speak any local dialects including Tagalog. But at the very least he still knows how to say this Filipino phrase: "Mabuhay, Kapamilya!"

Miss World 1993 Second Princess Ruffa Gutierrez had quite a mouthful of advice and encouragement for Janina San Miguel, the Bb. Pilipinas-World winner who sparked an outrage after she won.

San Miguel, who seemed to cave in to the pressure during the question-and-answer portion of the pageant, had a verbal breakdown and started speaking in atrocious English. This turn of events is still being discussed over the Internet, most savagely over YouTube, where her gaffes are viewed repeatedly, sometimes with sympathy but mostly as an object of ridicule.

San Miguel won the Bb. Pilipinas-World title and is set to represent the country in the coming Miss World beauty pageant.

In reaction to the outrage against the Bb. Pilipinas judges and San Miguel, Gutierrez  proved herself a Miss Congeniality to the end. Speaking with ABS-CBN's Mario Dumaual, she explained why it's important for a beauty queen to show competence in her speech and thought processes.

"I believe that a beauty pageant should be judged not only for the beauty but for the brains. Kasi you're representing your country in an international competition. You're gonna be with different delegates from different countries so you have to represent the Philippines in the best way you possibly can.

So that's not just your... physical beauty and also the way you speak, the way you carry yourself. I mean, pangit naman sabihin ang mga Pilipinang, you know, hindi marunong sumagot, 'di ba?  Hindi marunong mag-English. To think na 98 percent of our population ay nag-i-English," she said.

The former Miss World winner then added that San Miguel should not get discouraged by all the ridicule coming her way, and instead gather the strength and will to better herself.

"Binibining Pilipinas World has seven months. So dapat gamitin niya yung seven months na 'yon para i-challenge yung sarili niya. Mag-aral siya, mag-aral siya ng speech lessons; mag-aral siya how to have confidence, how to carry herself, at ipakita niya sa mga taong nagri-ridicule sa kanya, 'Aba, kaya ko 'to. Magsa-shine ako sa Miss World at gagalingan ko the next time," she said.

(She should use the seven months interim between now and the Miss World pageant to take speech lessons and learn to have more confidence and prove all her critics wrong.)

"But always remember, beauty with a purpose and beauty with brains," was Gutierrez final piece of advice.

Quotable queen
Still, another former beauty queen, 1979 Miss International Melanie Marquez could not help but offer her own advice to San Miguel. San Miguel has been compared to Marquez, who also has difficulty speaking correct English.

Marquez's own brand of mangled English has, in fact, become her trademark. So much so that she has authored a book, titled "Don't Judge Me, I'm Not A Book".

The book collects her most famous and hilarious malapropisms. Here's a sampling of those quotes:

"My brother is not a girl; he’s a gentleman."

"Don’t judge my brother; he’s not a book."

"I won’t stoop down to my level."

"I don’t eat meat. I’m not a carnival."

And of course, who could forget the message she gave to former husband Derek Dee at a showbiz talk show? She looked straight at the camera, and told her husband on national television:

“And to you, Mrs. Dee, I have two words for you:  Ang labo mo!”

Now that San Miguel has captured the limelight because of her English, Marquez made this comment, which, unfortunately, is in Filipino:

"May karapatan siyang magkamali sa Ingles kung maganda siya (She has the right to make mistakes in English if she's beautiful)." With a report from Mario Dumaual

Los Angeles -- Fear not Pacman fans. The “weight issues” during the Pacquiao-Barerra fight last year are gone.

Today, after working out at the Wildcard Gym, Pacquiao took the mandatory preliminary weigh-in at the Wildcard Gym.

Pacquiao came in at a sizzling 133 lbs., barely three over the limit. “ Kayang-kaya yun timbang” (the weight is manageable), a pundit said.

Pacquiao will take a day off tomorrow and on Monday he will attend a press conference with Juan Manuel Marquez at the Olvera Street area in downtown Los Angeles. After that short press con, he will proceed to the Wildcard Gym, finish off his training, break camp and drive to Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, Among the “spectators” and “members of the entourage” who arrived on board PAL flight 102 from Manila last Thursday night (March 6) here were showbiz couple Rudy Fernandez and Lorna Tolentino and Jinky Pacquiao, wife of the Filipino superstar, and her three companions.

Others who are expected to plane in for the Marquez-Pacquiao rematch at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas are Sen. Ramon Revilla, Jr., former governor Chavit Singson, comedians Tito, Vic and Joey and several other politicians from Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao. Some Filipino journalists from GMA-7, Manila Bulletin, Philippine star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philboxing, among other media outfits and boxing websites, have been here since March 3.

Several members of the Filipino-American community in California have confirmed the betting is heavily stacked against Marquez.

“Here in L.A., nobody from the Filipino-American community believes that Pacquiao will lose. In fact, the betting is whether or not Marquez will survive beyond five rounds,” said 45-year-old Lynon Cortez, a bank armored security staff.

Kasagaran anaa na magyampungad anang computer games nga way hinungdan ug way hikabangkaagan inig human ug dula.

Ang uban sab sige ra ug chat ug kaha sige tan-aw ug TV. Kinsa pa may moadto ug bookstore karon aron mopalit ug libro?

Hinumdumi nga way mohatag nimo ug diploma ug way mopalechon nimo kung mograduate ka ug BS-BS.

Close this HOLLYWOOD -- He appears gaunt, the cheek a little hollow, his beard and goatee prominent. But make no mistake about it, Manny Pacquiao swears he’s never felt better.

“I’m 100 percent ready,” said the Filipino ring superstar in Filipino after his media workout at celebrated trainer Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym here Wednesday.

“I’ve been focused on my training,” said Pacquiao. “I’m ready physically, mentally and spiritually to do battle with Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez.”

Pacquiao’s rematch with the World Boxing Council super featherweight champion is set on March 15 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas with the odds stacked on the Gen. Santos lefty.

Bookmakers have tagged Pacquiao a minus-185 favorite over the Mexican, meaning a $185 bet would net just $100 if Pacquiao wins. Marquez is at plus-145, meaning every $100 wager on the Mexican wins $145.

Pacquiao, however, refuses to be swayed by the figures.

“I don’t underestimate Marquez,” said Pacquiao. “He’s good, strong, that’s why he’s the champion.”

But Pacquiao promised a good fight at the end of the workout attended by former senator and PBA legend Robert “Sonny” Jaworski and Black Eyed Peas Fil-Am singer Apl.d.ap (aka Allan Pineda).

“I’m not satisfied with my performance in my last two fights and I want to show that I’m not going downhill.”

According to Pacquiao, his biggest concern is if Marquez, a counter-puncher, decides to run like he did after being knocked down three times in the first round of their first showdown in 2004.

“The fight will be boring if he does that,” the Filipino superstar said.

Pacquiao said he wants Marquez, who declared in a telephone conference Tuesday that he got too confident in their first bout, to fight him toe-to-toe.

“He’s ready, I’m ready,” said Pacquiao. “May the best man win.”
