The bodies of two Filipino seamen who perished in a ship collision off Kobe, Japan on Sunday will be repatriated Thursday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said that according to Philippine consul general Maria Lourdes Ramiro-Lopez in Osaka, the remains of the seamen will arrive around 1:30 p.m. on board a Philippine Airlines flight.
Cristobal did not name the fatalities.
The DFA added that the Japanese coast guard's investigation into the collision is ongoing. It added that the booking of the flight of the five other Filipinos who survived the tragedy is tentative.
The Filipino community in the Kansai region, meanwhile, has been providing support for the Filipino survivors, the DFA added.
Japanese officials, meanwhile, have decided to end the large-scale search and rescue operations for the two Filipinos who remained missing as of Monday night.
Three vessels collided Wednesday last week in the Akashi Strait, part of Japan's Inland Sea. A 1,466-ton Belizean cargo ship with nine Filipino crew on board sank.
No one was hurt on the other two ships, an oil tanker and a small boat.
The body of a Filipino ship captain was recovered after it was pulled in by a fishing boat in its trawl net, He was the second Filipino fatality in the accident. Another Filipino crew member was rescued Wednesday but later died in a nearby hospital.
Collisions are common in the Akashi Strait, one of Japan's busiest bodies of water that links major cities in western Japan with the Pacific Ocean.
