oo nga sabi nga ni Sarah, Sana nandito si Daddy...  ::)

Hi BelleXTM,

Thanks for sharing more inside views of the cave. Murag gasunod ra man gyud diay mo ni Sarah. I can see that she is really amazed by what she sees--kay wa may langub o yungib sa concrete jungle diri sa Japan. Bisag kabaw, when I was a child, that was a way of life for me in the farm. Karon, tourism novelty na. Napromote nag ayo ang avatar ni Bambi.

Glen is my brother! I want him to come to Korea where I am now but it seems that he really wants to share his talent to the Boholanos. We talked about it, though. He sort of like considering my invitation. I hope no one will get mad at me....hehehe.

Nice to meet you Ynell. Silingan ra diay ta ka naa man ko sa Japan. What do you do in Korea? Please encourage your brother to stay where his heart is, para mulambo ang art sa Bohol.

Sir Ben,

Nag register kang Sarah ang cave kay at first wala siya kasabot kung unsa ni. Mike's mom tried to say it in tagalog "yungib" and she still didn't understand. I remember explaining to her like bato nga naay buho...hahaha! And she understood and got so excited. While we were in the cave, she saw a big spider and got so scared. I remember her saying "takot ako sa spider, sana nandito si daddy". She's so sweet.

Na-amuse man ko ani nga istorya.

Thanks for the photos. Now I have the visuals of what my daughter Sarah just described to me on webcam. Nagregister sa iya ang cave. We've been to the Beefarm before, but I didn't know there are corners with such terrific views... Sagbayan Peak is a place I still have to visit. Pang-turista kaayo tan-awon.

The paper has yet to post but as soon as it does i will post it or Mike can if he likes.

One female Japanese

One korean

One Chinese Filipino.

I will or if Mike wants he can post it.

Was this Japanese lady involved in a diving accident? I hope these are not victims of crime.

How sweet of you Mr. Ben. I don't have photograhic memory but I must admit I have sharp mind remembering our visitors in the office. I volunteered for the Tigum Bol-anon sa Tibuok Kalibutan or TBTK in 1999, but the bonding wasn't that great and sweet like TB's July 27 Eyeball. TBTK attendees who attended it twice were not all that friendly. In fact, thelast one, everyone had a fight of whom would be the next president/ Here at TB, you don't elect an official as long as there are volunteers who act as leaders.

Cheers to all! Count me in in 2010!!!

This is the "social" room of Tubag Bohol's big pajag. I think we've also crossed threads in the "discussion" room where people were a little shrill (I'm talking about the thread on the chop-chop incident). These are all part of being in the Tubag Bohol family.

Yes, we don't always agree here, but we try to be creative and constructive about our differences. Ang kasagara sa problema sa mga tapuk-tapok sa Pinoy nga maoy hinungdan sa gubot kaning pabidahan. But here in TB, we try not to compare notes, just share them. I hope we stay this way. Our differences make us more interesting. Let's not make them undo our oneness.
#1611
Here we are in the midst of a gruesome tragedy involving fellow Boholanos, and we're shooting the first thing that comes to our mind--without even a thought for the feelings of people who may somehow be connected to the victims or the culprits.

It takes a minute or two to type our thoughts, more to compose them--enough for us to have our own sanity check.

I am disappointed that some comments here are expressed rashly. How does this make us better humans than the one who flew into a fit of rage and committed this horrendous crime?

It's an insane world, but TB people should keep a lucid head on their shoulders.

Great bonding... I wish I was there with my family but as of now I don't have the luxury to visit Philippines because of the campaign trail. I wish to attend the Grand EB in 2010.

Welcome to this merry company, Tubag Bohol. I'm sure in time, you'll be able to connect the avatar, the handle and real name together. When you do this, you're really in the family circle even if we interact only virtually. (I'm sure being part of the campaign trail, you have a sharp memory of faces.)

We took our sweet time doing this as we started small, but now that we've become a huge family, it will really help everyone if we place captions to every photo. This way, the maniniyot will be forced to ask the names of their subjects and get the chance to know them better, which is for the benefit as well of those who are only viewing these photos from afar.

if it seems to local businessmen that tourism-oriented establishments are the bread and butter these days, then i guess stakeholders in this industry should make it a point to practice sustainable tourism especially when there seems to be no master plan for tourism development. if this continues to be a trend, everything will just be become a chaotic mixture of structures here and there that will take away all natural aesthetics that has lured the tourists in the first place.

You can say this again. There seem to be pockets of movement to revive our unique architectural heritage, green or eco movements in localities, etc. but unless all these are subsumed under one master plan and enforced by our LGUs, our landscape will be a mishmash of colors and shapes.

Raya hates it when I show off her works, pero di magpapugong ang amahan. This was the painting that won for her the grand prize from the Mayor of Tsukuba City in a city-wide competition for junior high school students here in Japan. Didn't know about this until I received the notice. She titled this "Rhythmn in Stick", probably in reference to her second love which is drums (and music). The reason I encourage her to pursue this when she is a little settled with her academics is that she told me she knows how to pencil-sketch but is not confident in watercolor. I really appreciate the help I could get from you by referring this mentor.

Kalami, kabibo! Outdoor karaoke? Only in the Philippines!

I've talked to Lynne briefly last night, also to Jun and Nang Lee. Am surprised to know that Jun's mother and my mother were close friends back in Jagna. If I got Lynne's account right, murag nakapalihog kuno akong mama sa mama ni Jun a few times nga bantayan ko or my younger brother, who was a baby then. Busa diay murag duol kaayo ni si Jun sa ako... It seems that everytime there is an EB, new friendships are forged and old ones are reconnected.

Manang Lee, i-invite si Lynne sa church pohon. Naa sila ron sa March of Faith sa Cogon. When I was there last May 10, Lynne even arranged for me to lead the praise and worship with the youth, singing the complete version of Awesome God. Hilig namong duha music.

Lumine, Daddy Pronyx, Mama Tita, Jun, Manang Lee, Mari, Gelyan, Paul ug kanang uban pa nga dili naku kaayo familiar (naa unta captions identifying each person aron matiman-an gyud ang nawong), again, thanks so much! Looking forward to your Saturday tour and Sunday EB!

i'm now taking your Glutawhite product wa na ko mailhi sa akong banana pag abot nako kay na younger looking na kuno ko hahahaha ;D ;D

Can't express in words how much I'm thankful for your kind welcome to my family. Makit-an gyud naku diri sa inyong pictures nga enjoy kaayo sila, labi na sa lami nga pagkaon ug sa dagat. In fact, the next Sunday, nanghagad daw ni si Paolo nga mubalik sa dagat uban lang iyang mga amigo. I told him he can't go to the beach without the company of an adult, busa nagpa-schedule sila otro. Thru TB, Lynne's and the kids' adjustment in Bohol has been made smoother.

Kanang nakarelax kag dugay sa Pilipinas, dako kaayo na nga factor nga mabata ang nawong. You look very young indeed in your avatar. I'm sure you'll see more rejuvenating effects in the days to come. Mahimo na gyud ka model sa Mosbeau, ate Lits.

Music and Video / Everything Must Change
July 19, 2008, 10:52:42 AM
I am waxing melancholy today, looking at the skies that only last night was splashed yellow by a full moon but is now blazing from mid-summer sun, remembering people who were once close by but now you only hug in your dreams, catching echoes of laughter in days gone by but hearing only silence now...

And I remember this old favorite that always soothed me... This song smoothens the sharp edges of whys and just makes me accept life as it was, is and will be...

If you like this, hum this with me...

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=UJpZwTjSOPk

Everything must change
Nothing stays the same
Everyone must change
No one stays the same

The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged

There are not many things in life
You can be sure of
Except rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And hummingbirds do fly

Winter turns to spring
A wounded heart will heal
But never much too soon
Yes everything must change

The young become the old
And mysteries do unfold
Cause that's the way of time
Nothing and no one goes unchanged

There are not many things in life
You can be sure of
Except rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And butterflies do fly

Rain comes from the clouds
Sun lights up the sky
And music
And music
Makes me cry

i am an accountant and i have my share of experience with the call center industry when i worked for one in makati and i can say that establishing one in bohol is a very promising move.

it would provide good jobs for dozens and dozens of boholanos who are more than fluent to speak in english, right now we find that lots of boholanos are working in cebu or manila to work and earn in a call center.  if we can answer this concern with our Global Bohol Inc, the better as they would not need to go far but stay in the beloved hometown of Bohol.

nindot jd e utilize ang Pilipino skills and talents in the homefront kay mkatabang ta sa mga tawo and sa economy.  i am all up for this! =)

Indeed, nowhere else in this world is there a combination of professional skills, talents and backgrounds who are like-minded in their goals and kindred in spirit than in Tubag Bohol. We only need to harness our collective force. Then we don't need to go to Cebu, Makati, Tokyo, Sweden, Saudi Arabia to make a decent living for ourselves. But to those of us who have already been or are still in places far away from home, nothing will be lost as we need the expertise and the network we have acquired overseas not only to benefit ourselves and our families but also Boholanons at large. As Macky has mentioned before, we can take advantage of technology to do our global work in our home village, for a lesser cost financially and emotionally (we can be with our loved ones).

Let me just float to you some business ideas that gives me confidence Global Bohol Inc. is a viable and winnable proposition.

Once we have incorporated Global Bohol Inc., we can let this company take care of our EBs for a fee (since we do spend for these events out of our personal pocket anyway), the net profit of which will eventually be returned to us in terms of dividends. The advantage is that we can get good venues at discounted rates as a corporate client. Aside from EBs (which are just drops in the bucket), our company can also do events --concerts, sports and competitive events, etc-- like Sir Jun has conceptualized.

Global Bohol Inc. will also take care of the travel and tour needs of our family and friends. As Bohol's popularity shoots up worldwide, we at TB who are dispersed geographically worldwide are best positioned to market this tourist destination. We can have our own trade publication for circulation not only locally but also internationally. Among us, we have Mike, Jun, Paul, Scott, Leo, Melrose, myself and many others who can make this publication world-class. We can ask the Department of Tourism to be an official sponsor and get a budget as well (our very own Congressman Edgar Chatto is after all chair of House tourism committee, and DOT honcho, Cebuano Joseph "Ace" Durano the number one endorser of Bohol), as well as the tourism industry in Bohol and surrounding areas. Of course, aside from Tubag Bohol, we should have a website version for our trade publication that will be interactive. With Mike's search-engine optimization expertise, we will be the site to consult for tourism in Bohol and the Visayas.

Our Tubal Bohol Green Village can be entrusted to the management and maintenance of Global Bohol Inc. Since most of us will not be here most of the time to take care of our property, we need a company to maintain and develop it. If it is envisioned to be not only a holiday haven for members but also a tourist attraction, given its ecotourism motif, the property certainly has to be maintained professionally. I can imagine a resort, shopping and dining facility in the complex that will also generate income for us. It is possible that our upkeep and upgrade of our individual properties can be financed from our earnings.

The lawyers and accountants among us can help me service the needs of the increasing number of Japanese companies in Cebu and the Visayas. They need help with their contracts, labor relations, government compliance procedures, etc. With 100,000 Filipinas, mostly Visayans, presently married to Japanese, there is an explosion of civil and criminal cases needing lawyers well-versed in the Family Code, property relations, child custody, etc. etc.

As soon as the bandwidth in Bohol is upgraded to accommodate the needs of a call center, we can also launch this service using my client database and my network of product providers in Japan.

Daghan pa kaayo tag possibilities. Maayo pud nga inig-uli nato sa Bohol, atong pang-laag-laag diha na nato kuhaon sa atong dividends.

#1633
When God put me through a tough time, I used to thank Him for trusting me to overcome such burden. But now I think God is less interested in testing my ability than my willingness to empty and put myself in complete trust to Him. I believe God is more delighted when we trust Him more than we trust ourselves.

That's why He gave Moses, Joshua, Gideon and Jehoshaphat more adversaries than the army they could muster. When these great warriors prayed for more military resources, God demanded that they either cut down or face the battle with what they have. Besieged by the Egyptians, God told Moses, "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." He told Jehoshaphat, "Do not be afraid... For the battle is not yours, but God's."

You have blessed so many people, Rick Warren, with your book. It is a tough battle you're facing. But we just have to be still and trust in God.

#1634
You will enjoy the new insights that Rick Warren has, with his wife now having cancer and him
having 'wealth' from the book sales. This is an absolutely incredible
short interview with Rick Warren, 'Purpose Driven Life ' author and pastor
of Saddleback Church in California

In the interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, Rick said:

People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell,
life is preparation for eternity. We were made to last forever, and God
wants us to be with Him in Heaven.

One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body--
but not the end of me.

I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of
years in eternity. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. God
wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity.

We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn't
going to make sense.

Life is a series of problems: Either you are in one now, you're just
coming out of one, or you're getting ready to go into another one.

The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than
your comfort.

God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your
life happy.

We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that's not the goal of life.
The goal is to grow in character, in Christ likeness.

This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the
toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer.

I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark
time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don't believe that
anymore.

Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like
two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good
and something bad in your life.

No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad
that needs to be worked on.

And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something
good you can thank God for.

You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems.

If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness, 'which
is my problem, my issues, my pain.' But one of the easiest ways to get rid
of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others.

We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of
thousands of people, God was not going to heal Kay or make it easy for
her.

It has been very difficult for her, and yet God has strengthened her
character, given her a ministry of helping other people, given her a
testimony, drawn her closer to Him and to people.

You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life.

Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder. For
instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million
copies, it made me instantly very wealthy.

It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with
before. I don't think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or
for you to live a life of ease.

So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety
and influence. He gave me two different passages that helped me decide
what to do, II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72

First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our
lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases.

Second, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the
church.

Third, we set up foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan
to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and
educate the next generation.

Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I
started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able
to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity?

Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or
am I going to be driven by God's purposes (for my life)?

When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if
I don't get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You
better. God didn't put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He's more
interested in what I am than what I do.

That's why we're called human beings, not human doings.

Happy moments, PRAISE GOD.
Difficult moments, SEEK GOD.
Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD.
Painful moments, TRUST GOD.
Every moment, THANK GOD.
#1635
I am glad that despite the long dormancy of this thread, you guys are still interested in the idea of a business for TB.

Since this thread was first started, so many things have changed dramatically. For one, the business environment has become more challenging--with the prices of food and oil spiking. Presently, the internet bandwidth in Bohol, I believe, cannot yet accommodate the requirements of a call center. But if you follow Mayor Dan Lim's policy pronouncements, the Tagbilaran Business Center (formerly Agora) will be completed in December, and one of its facilities will be a call center. I assume then that the telecom companies will orchestrate the upgrading of the bandwith to the completion of this city's flagship project.

Meanwhile, Sir Jun is already launching his business during the Grand EB. I think we can find a point of convergence for all our ideas. We can just pool our resources--capital, network and intellectual inputs together. Personally, I think it is hard to kick off a business in Bohol by myself. Individually, even our best strengths can easily be copied--that is why we would need to discuss things in a closed forum. But if we combine all our strengths together, our chemistry will be hard to replicate.

At this stage, GLOBAL BOHOL INC. is still a going concern and needs inputs in terms of ideas.

It's a dog's life!

This may be a dog-eat-dog world. But it's no excuse for us to go to the dogs.

Let's be kind to the underdog. For every dog will have his day.

(While contemplating my comment on these pictures, I just looked at the Dictionary of American Idioms for the word "dog" and am surprised that there is such an abundance of profound expressions.)

5 Strategies for Surviving Tough Times
by Lisa Smith
Thursday, May 22, 2008

When economic times turn tough, governments urge their citizens to spend. Economists think of citizens as "consumers" and rely on them to put their "disposable income" to work. By doing this they will support the economy, which translates into higher stock prices.

However, in times like early 2008, when consumers were reeling from the perfect storm of inflation, a global credit crunch, a global housing market in decline and concerns about stagflation, there is often a conflict with the governmental cry for consumers to spend. It's a bewildering scenario. What's the best course of action for a concerned consumer to take? The following strategies provide a road map for surviving economic downturns.

1. Don't Buy What You Can't Afford

We all want that designer sweater, leather handbag, or cute sports car, but most of us just can't afford to make the purchases. There's a simple solution to this dilemma. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. This is often the easiest point to understand, but it is one of the hardest to implement when all those goodies are staring you in the face and all your credit companies are telling you it's OK.

2. If You Can't Pay Cash, You Probably Can't Afford It

In our credit crazy world, amassing debt no longer carries a social stigma. Everybody has a car payment, a house payment and credit card payments. Well, remember what your mother said about everybody jumping off of a bridge? Just because "everybody" is doing it, doesn't make it a good idea. Buying something you can't afford now, especially when the economy is unsettled, can double the pain of paying later. For example, if you purchase a $450,000 home today and the market goes into a slump and devalues your home by $200,000, you will be paying the bank twice what the home has come to be worth. Just because it was easy to get the credit to buy that home, doesn't mean it was the right time for you to buy in.

3. Paying Interest on Anything Makes Somebody Else Rich

When you pay interest on a purchase, you are overpaying for that item for the luxury of getting to use it now. The simple act of paying interest means that the price you are paying to make the purchase is greater than the sale price of the item. You are giving away even more of your hard-earned money in order to own that item than the manufacturer thought the item was worth. For example, if you buy a car for $25,000 with a loan at 7% interest for five years, in the end, you will pay almost $30,000 for the car. Once you factor in depreciation, you're left with a very cheap car that cost you thousands more than it should have.

4. If You Are in Debt, stop Spending Money

Sometimes, such as when purchasing a home, the cost of the item is so great that you simply cannot afford to pay cash. This should be the exception rather than the rule. When it cannot be avoided, you need to close your purse and stop spending. Getting yourself further it debt doesn't help your financial situation. Making a realistic budget in this case is the key to success. Once you know how much you're actually spending on those daily trips to the grocery store and coffee shop, you'll be able to find room to cut costs realistically.

5. Don't Count on Somebody Else to Save You

In times of economic uncertainty, people often think the government will be able to help them, but unfortunately this is often the time when the government has the least amount of money and freedom to help its own citizens. In most cases, the government won't save you, so you'll have to save yourself. When the economy is in a downturn, you can't just look at what you are spending, you also need to look at where the money is coming from. Your employer is facing the same difficulties you are: trying to make bill payments, balancing the flow of capital, all while sales are slowing. Just like you, your employer will be looking to reduce its costs, which could be in the form of layoffs. You could be in big trouble if you haven't planned for this possibility. The plan here is to start saving now for that eventual rainy day, and prepare an emergency fund for yourself. If it is too late to start saving and you already need the money, many financial institutions will let you defer a payment or two if you prove you have a smart financial plan to eventually pull through.

When People Don't Spend

But wait! If we're all hanging on to our money rather than feeding the economy, what will happen? Will stock prices plummet? Will economic growth grind to a halt? Will we all be poor? No. For a real world example of this, let's take a look at Japan, where saving more than consuming has been commonplace in its people's history.

While being a net lender is a concept that the West abandoned some time after World War II, it continued to be practiced in Japan. During the mid-1970s, Reuters reports that Japanese consumers saved some 20% of their disposable incomes. During Japan's economic slump in the 1990s, the Nikkei 225 fell from a peak of 39,000 in 1989 to 16,000 in 1992. Gross domestic product growth averaged less than 1% per year, but personal savings remained in the double digits. Although the unemployment rate rose from less than 2.5% in 1990 to just under 5% in 2000, with an average of 3% percent according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it still remained lower than the rate in most industrialized nations. The net result? Japan remained a healthy, vibrant, wealthy country with a poorly performing stock market. If you've got savings and a smart financial plan, a weak market won't break you.

Live Now Like You Face Tough Times

These five strategies work equally well when times are good, so there is no need to wait until you are in trouble to start making smart decisions.Your lifestyle will be characterized by things you can actually afford, such as a house that won't get repossessed, a car that might not impress the neighbors but will still get you to work and back, and long, restful nights free from financial worries. It might not be the fairytale lifestyle of the rich and famous that corporate marketers having been trying sell you, but at least you won't have to worry about how to keep up on the payments for a lifestyle you can't afford.

Japan is only 4 hours away from the Philippines. The only formidable barrier for our health workers is the language, which they are required to be functionally literate in for them to be regular workers in Japan. But there is dire shortage of nurses and caregivers here, given that this is a greying society. I think in 20 years, katunga sa mga Hapon mga retirees na.

Japanese should be introduced as an elective for those who are interested to work in Japan. I have a Filipina friend married to a Japanese who is the president of the Licensed Filipino Caregivers Association in Japan. They can take care of networking on the side of the employers.

I was contemplating introducing Japanese language in the nursing curriculum in anticipation of the approval by the Senate of the free trade agreement with Japan (JPAA) when our nurses and caregivers will be given more employment access here.  Asa naman si Melrose nga una nakong na-istorya? Anyway, it seems that with a Japanese-speaking leader at the helm, HNU is poised to blaze the trail for Filipino health workers to Japan.

HNU HAS A NEW PRESIDENT
FR. FRANCISCO T. ESTEPA, SVD

Leadership is not just a matter of techne (art), but above all of skill â€" in religious parlance, a gift. Put in this perspective, for a leader to fully actualize his/her art, skill, talent, or gift, he/she must have the indispensable charisma to lead.

Yes, the new Holy Name University President is indisputably a leader who is imbued with an indubitable charisma. Proof is Fr. Francisco T. Estepa, SVD, has been president to several institutions and organizations like University of San Carlos in Cebu City (1999-2002), Association of Cebu Catholic Schools (2000), Cebu Amateur Athletic Association (2000), Divine Word College of Legazpi in Legazpi City (2000-2008), and Catholic Educational Association of Legazpi (2002-2008).

Fr. "Kito," as he is fondly called by friends, colleagues, and associates, holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration degree which he earned from the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. in 1997. He has also been to Nagoya, Japan to study Japanese Language and Culture in 1979. These are only a few of the achievements and work experiences of Fr. Francisco T. Estepa, SVD, the third university president of Holy Name University. His installation is scheduled this August.

Congratulations Fr. Kito and welcome back to Bohol! (Dr. Ed Babor).

The New York Times

As home prices continue to decline and loan defaults mount, federal regulators are bracing for dozens of American banks to fail over the next year.

But after a large mortgage lender in California collapsed late Friday, Wall Street analysts began posing two crucial questions: Just how many banks might falter? And, more urgently, which one could be next?

The nation’s banks are in far less danger than they were in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when more than 1,000 federally insured institutions went under during the savings-and-loan crisis. The debacle, the greatest collapse of American financial institutions since the Depression, prompted a government bailout that cost taxpayers about $125 billion.

But the troubles are growing so rapidly at some small and midsize banks that as many as 150 out of the 7,500 banks nationwide could fail over the next 12 to 18 months, analysts say. Other lenders are likely to shut branches or seek mergers.

“Everybody is drawing up lists, trying to figure out who the next bank is, No. 1, and No. 2, how many of them are there,” said Richard X. Bove, the banking analyst with Ladenburg Thalmann, who released a list of troubled banks over the weekend. “And No. 3, from the standpoint of Washington, how badly is it going to affect the economy?”

Australia's oil aims harm Philippines
By Gerry Albert Corpuz

Manila, Philippines â€" Last week officials and members of Pamalakaya, an alliance of small fisherfolk organizations in the Philippines, made an appeal to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to convince the Australian offshore mining company NorAsia Energy Limited to back out of conducting oil and gas exploration in the Philippines.

Specifically, the areas to be covered by the oil and gas exploration are the Cebu-Bohol Strait, a narrow strait separating the island provinces of Bohol and Cebu, and part of Leyte province that sums up the Eastern Visayan basin over an area of 7,400 square kilometers. The block lies between the two sub-blocks of Service Contract 51 where NorAsia already has an 80 percent working interest.

Moreover, the ambitious offshore mining will cover some 445,000 hectares of marine waters covering the three island provinces in the East Visayan basin. This undertaking, the fisherfolk believe, will destroy their resources. They also see it as an assault on the Filipino people’s patrimony and sovereignty.

The Filipino fisherfolk group revealed that the Otto Energy group, NorAsia’s wholly owned subsidiary company in partnership with the Philippine TransAsia Oil and Energy Development Corporation, managed to clinch Area 8 Service Contract 69 which is adjacent to Service Contract 51 for a 7-year period of oil and gas exploration.

In 2007, NorAsia acquired 146 square kilometers of 3D seismic data over two prospects in Service Contract 51. It said Area 8 of Service Contract 69 offers significant follow-up potential in additional structures if initial drilling in Service Contract 512 is successful.

NorAsia said Service Contract 69 has approximately 3,000 kilometers of existing 2D seismic and an active petroleum system as shown by the abundant onshore oil seeps and seismic supported direct hydrocarbon indicators on prospects in the area.

While Australian firms AustralAsia and Ottoman Energy groups are conducting oil and gas exploration activities in Cebu-Bohol Strait and Northeastern Leyte, another Australian company, NIDO Petroleum Ltd., is training it sights on northwest Palawan.

In its disclosure to the Australian Stock Exchange, NIDO issued 78.2 million ordinary shares to investors in Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia to raise cash for the funding of its exploration activities off the coast of the island province.

David Whitby, NIDO managing director, said the company raised US$17.9 million from the issuance of 78 million ordinary shares to prospected investors. The funds would be used to finance oil exploration covered by Service Contract 54 which covers 540,000 hectares of marine waters, Service Contract 58, which covers 1.3 million hectares and Service Contract 63, which covers 1.056 million hectares, all in Northwest Palawan. The Otto Energy Ltd. group is also following the NIDO hunt for investor partners for Service Contracts 50, 52 and 55 in Northwest Palawan.

On top of these potentially rich deposits of oil and gas reserves in the Philippine sea is the socio-economic reality that the offshore mining to be conducted by NorAsia and their Filipino partner companies poses extreme danger to the Philippine marine environment, and in particular, the East Visayan Sea, which is the center of marine biodiversity in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

The Filipino fishermen support Pamalakaya’s strongly opposition to NorAsia’s offshore mining in Cebu-Bohol Strait and in the entire East Visayan basin because it will pave the way for the systematic destruction of the marine environment and the fisher people’s livelihood. The issues raised against offshore mining go beyond the context of profits and cost benefit analysis.

The far-reaching effects of oil and gas exploration, even during their exploratory or prospecting stage prior to production and extraction, are very certain, based on the country’s previous experience with other offshore mining activities staged by foreign oil and gas groups.

Studies have revealed that offshore mining causes a significant amount of air pollution. Each offshore oil platform generates approximately 214,000 pounds of air pollutants each year. An average exploration well for natural gas could generate 50 tons of nitrogen oxides, 13 tons of carbon monoxide, 6 tons of sulfur dioxide and 5 tons of volatile organic hydrocarbons.

In addition to that, oil and gas drilling operations produce huge amounts of water waste ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 metric tons of highly toxic water waste materials per drilling. The seismic tests, which are part of the exploration stage, damage the hearing organs of marine species, cause hemorrhage in body tissues, and damage their reproductive organs.

Seismic blasting can cause behavioral modifications and reduce or eliminate available habitats for breeding, spawning, foraging and migration. Seismic noises can alter fish distribution by tens of kilometers and can elicit physiological stress on neural-immune responses in marine organisms.

Seismic tests damage plankton eggs and larvae found in the immediate vicinity of airgun, and reduce catches in commercial fishers. They also damage the swim bladders of fishes and lungs of marine mammals.

Recent findings also revealed that oil and gas exploration activities could lead to massive production of other toxic waste materials such as cadmium which causes lung cancer; lead which causes gastrointestinal diseases, blood and kidney disorders, mental retardation and affects the nervous system; chromium which causes lung and liver cancers, kidney and other respiratory illnesses.

If NorAsia will push its offshore mining, a severe fish crisis will occur. It could lead to a dramatic decrease of 600,000 metric tons in the yearly production of fish in the country or approximately 20 percent annually.

The offshore mining in Cebu-Bohol Strait and other parts of the Visayan basin will affect the livelihood of not less than 100,000 small fishermen and 500,000 dependents, and will further exacerbate the problem of food security of 87 million Filipinos.

The offshore mining in the Visayan Sea will have a devastating impact on fish production in Region VI provinces that account for an average for 350,000 metric tons of fish harvest per year, and Region VII, composed of Negros Oriental, Bohol, Cebu and Siquijor, which accounts for 205,000 metric tons of fish.

Region VIII is made up of Biliran, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Western Samar and Southern Leyte yield and average of 100,000 metric tons of fish per year.

Given the issues and concerns raised against NorAsia’s upcoming and full-blown offshore mining activities in Cebu-Bohol Strait and the East Visayan basin, Australian Prime Minister Rudd and his political party, the Australian Labor Party, should listen to the legitimate cry of the Filipino fishers against NorAsia’s oil and gas exploration stint in the Philippines.

The Australian government must be reminded that the Australian people will not want to be part of this looming massacre of the Philippine environment and slaughter of the fisher people’s livelihood.

Stopping NorAsia from destroying the Philippine marine resources in the name of corporate super profits may be tough, but for Prime Minister Rudd, this is the politically, morally and legally correct way to address the concern of our fisher people and the Filipino public in general

Pon,

Usa ra may gigikanan sa mga Tutor, sa Candijay. Very likely, relative nako na kay sa kadaghanon namo, di pud nako kaila tanang Tutor. I haven't even met all my cousins on my father's side yet. There are also Tutors in Davao, Butuan and even Cagayan de Oro, and they are all my relatives.

When we were away from home, the regular way to keep in touch with the family in the province was through letters sent by mail (which we now call snail mail) or handcarried by a returning townmate and for urgent matters, such as when we ran out of allowance before the next padala, by telegram...  The days and even weeks of waiting did not seem as eternal and did not trigger as much panic as when anybody in the family these days fails to pick up the mobile phone after ten rings, or after two or three calls.

Bag-o ra  palit si misis ug mobile phone sa akong daughter nga si Raya, kay di man muundang ug pangayo. Maayo gani naay sale sa ICM. Sa una isinggit ra man ngan nato ug pangitaon sa ginikanan. Ordinary telephone was a luxury then. Now the cell phone is a must. Personally, ako pud murag wa koy kamot ug way dalang cellphone.

Trick of Fate
________________________________________
I never thought I'd find someone like you
Though in my every fantasy I saw you everyday
I thought there was no way - to make my dream come true

I always thought that I would be alone
Afraid to dream that anyone was ever gonna see
The love inside of me - but how could I have known

A trick of fate would bring us together
A trick of fate would alter our lives
We had to wait it seemed like forever
But never say never to a trick of fate

What were the chances I'd be here with you
That after all the lonely years of searching everywhere
I'd turn and you'd be there - from clear out of the blue

Our lives are in the hands of destiny
And though we try to take control
That's not the way it goes - a higher power knows
How it's supposed to be

A trick of fate brought us together
A trick of fate altered our lives
We had to wait it seemed like forever
But never say never to a trick of fate

And now, something has begun - something very new
And suddenly the future's looking bright
Somehow when two hearts beat as one, fairy tales come true
And anything seems possible tonight

A trick of fate brought us together
A trick of fate altered our lives
We had to wait it seemed like forever
But never say never to a trick of fate

It just goes to show
That you never know
Where love's gonna grow
- It's a trick of fate

***gidala nako diri para dili mawala***

Gelyan, again thanks to you, Hazel, Nang Lita and Mike's mom for the wonderful time my wife and three kids had last Sunday at Dumaluan. They really had great time. Gikapoy intawon sila ug sayo nangatulog gabii...

Ang akong anak hilig pod ug soccer kay soccer man ang national sports dire. Naa pod akong pag umangkon (in-law) sa Butuan nga member ug soccer team sa ilang iskwelahan. Among plano nga pabalhinon sa Tagbilaran. Bag-o pa mi nag padala ug soccer ball, knee pad ug spike shoes kay request lagi to niya.

Dong Lorenzo,

I really admire intelligent, young men, pursuing academic study in the sciences whose foundation of faith is strong. You seem just like one of the guys I sit down with every Sunday evening for a Bible study. Among the really active members of our group are PhD candidates in Chemistry, Remote Sensing Technology, Biotechnology, Physics, etc. in the University of Tsukuba and research institutes surrounding it. Our Taiwanese pastor is himself a master's degree holder in Mechanical Engineering, aside from his M.A. in divinity at an American theological school. With such a multi-disciplinary background, our discussion and reflection of the Word becomes even more interesting. We do express wonder, surprise, confusion, and sometimes a generous dose of laughter at passages we don't understand, but we believe that the insufficiency of our understanding does not detract from the immensity of His truth.

Very well said, Mr Bene. Sakto gyud, religion doesn't save us. Ang mga pari mga tawo ra man pud na sila, kung makasala sila, it's between them and God. It doesn't disillusion me, coz mas daghan man ko kaila nga mga maayo kaayo nga pari. Do you know Fr. Chapman SJ? He was my most beloved priest. I cried for days when he died.

With regards adtong pari nga cgeg counseling adtong ex-wife sa akong uncle, na affected baya gyud ang parish. Kay giluod siguro ang mga tawo maminaw niya magwali sa misa about God's teachings, unya cge siyag counseling on the side. I think the counseling has been going on for close to ten years now. What I don't understand is why wala gi futbol sa Obispo ning paria.

We should at least be answerable to the laws of man before we can claim to stand for the laws of God and claim to be His servants. Erring clergymen, whether Catholic or Protestant, should be made to answer for their action. Ang problema ron sa Catholic Church, which the Church itself honestly admits, is the shortage of seminarians ug katong gusto mupari, so removal of a priest may deprive some parishes of a shepherd. Galing lang kay ug nasalaag ang shepherd, labin na jud ang mga kordero. Bitaw, affected parties should instigate formal action to relieve him.

makalibog bitaw basahon na ang bibliya. kinahanglan dili lang na basahon tun-an gyod. pareha sa schoolroom situation nga naay maestro ug naa pod mga studyante.

Tinuod jud ni, Tita Lee. My interest in the Bible was aroused by a brilliant Japanese preacher whose expertise is the Old Testament. I was requested to interpret his preaching from Japanese to English everytime he preached at church. I had confidence in my language ability, but I realized that if you don't have a firm grasp of the content, you can't really interpret from one language to another effectively. So I started reading the Bibile, especially the Old Testament and the history of Israel. Auspiciously, I had a Christian study group that really patiently egged me on until I was able to catch up. Until now, I am still attending our Sunday evening sessions. Today, we finished 1 Kings 21 having more questions than answers... But if God's Word were so easily comprehensible, it would perhaps be because we are reducing His message to human terms. So we have learned to appreciate what we do not fully understand.

Ngeks.

I was raised a Catholic and received education from the Jesuits until college. When I got married, I started attending my wife's Protestant church just so we could be together on Sundays, and I found the free expression of worship liberating and exhilarating. I think there is an abundance of common ground in both for me to dwell in the differences.

I believe we can't be saved by religion. We are saved by our faith. Daghan pud ko disillusionments sa mga pari, but I also have first-hand experience of the weaknesses of pastors. So I don't focus on the frailties of man but on the perfection of God.

Bible Study / Re: Bible Study: Tubag Bohol Version
July 13, 2008, 07:05:24 AM
I attend a Bible Study almost every Sunday evening and we go one chapter at a time, starting from Genesis. We are now in 1st Kings 22. The New Testament is easier to read and the thread of thought easier to follow, so I advise beginners to start here. The Old Testament can be very challenging because it has to be understood on different levels--from the literal and historical to the highly figurative and spiritual plane.

It is good to study the O.T. with the guidance of someone well-versed in it because one can be confused by passages seemingly contrary to Christian thinking--like why God blessed Abraham who lied about many things and slept with his maid, Jacob who cheated his brother Esau and slept with both sisters, why David who slept with his general's wife and schemed to kill him is called a "man after God's own heart", why God ordered total annihilation of pagans when the Israel moved into the Promised Land, etc. etc.

In our group, we have a Taiwanese pastor, Filipino PhD candidates in the natural sciences, undergraduate students and plain housewives. The most interesting questions--which force us to think really deeply--come from one Japanese housewife whose question always gives rise to more questions, most of them really hilarious. (I recall the interjections of Belle here.) We attempt to answer in the best way we can, without taking offense, and we sometimes go home without really clear answers to those questions. We don't feel we have one muscle less in the strength of our faith, and we always look forward to the next session.

Somehow, the process of addressing these questions, more than giving any definitive answer itself, is what builds our faith...

Tito Benne, Am very open minded about this. And I think its good to see other people's points of views. But for me, though there are some instances of scriptural discrepancies, if one reads the whole text of the Holy Bible, most of the discrepancies are explained and cleared. It is when individuals twist the meaning of scripture to fulfill an agenda or if they simply wish to focus on one particular passage and ignore the whole; that becomes a problem.

Every text in the Holy Bible, from Old Testament to the New Testament is not 'illogical' nor is it 'unimportant'. It is THE WORD OF GOD.

And we are here to study and gain a better, wider, fuller understanding of his voice.

Not to drown His voice with personal ramifications and side convictions.

Hope you all understand.

I fully agree with you in this regard, Dong. In fact, since the Bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is God-breathed, it has unity of thought. Seeming discrepancies are actually fragments of one whole consistent truth. Only the most literal and superficial reading of the Bible can make it seem illogical...

Dong Lorenzo, OT (Off-topic) sa ko from OT (Old Testament) Can't help but notice Belle look like French royalty in her new avatar. Unsay pasabot sa kulokadidang? Murag colorful kaayo ni nga lingwahe.

As Antoine de Saint Exupéry once said, "What is essential is invisible to the eye." So it is not the physical circumcision that you can see (even in the dark, Belle?) which matters to God, but circumcision of the heart--that is, setting oneself apart to be of Him and serve Him.

What would you do if you find yourself in the same elevator as this lady?

Well, I did once, while doing translation work for NHK, Japan's public broadcasting network. And for those of you who don't know her, she's Namie Amuro, Japan's top pop diva and fashion trend-setter. This lady is amazing. Known for popularizing the bronzefied hairstyle and high-heeled boots in Japan, she shot to the zenith of popularity about 10 years ago, got pregnant, bore a child and dissolved into obscurity. When she made a comeback recently, she was re-embraced by her fans and their teenage kids and has doubled her following.

Sadly, when I found myself in the same elevator as her, we were not by ourselves. Besides me, there were two cleaning ladies and two of her male alalays. Nobody fussed over her. But when she stepped out, the two janitresses looked at each other and muttered, "I just looked at her billboard today. Can't believe she's that tiny."

Fame does make one bigger than life.
