ORGANIC AMPALAYA IN THE BACKYARD

by : Felix B. Daray, (published in the Agriculture Magazine, Sept. 2010)

LIKE MANY PEOPLE , my favorite pastime is gardening. It is my relief from stress and source of joy, especially when it’s harvest time.

These days, I am growing organic ampalaya in my backyard. I enjoy sharing my harvest with my friends and neighbors. Likewise, I like to impart my little knowledge on it.I suggest to those who plan to grow ampalaya in the backyard to plant it in an area that is exposed to sunlight. They should also plant the crop near a compost pit. Eight months after the biodegradable waste decomposed, sow two seeds near the pit.

As soon as the vines start growing and crawling up on the trellis, water the plant with rice wash or fish wash or meat wash .It would be best for the plants as they are very rich in nutrients and minerals.
To prevent infestation, bag the fruits with cellophane or old newsprints as soon as the flowers fall down. Doing so would hinder sucking insects and fruit flies to lay eggs on the young fruits.

I also inspect my ampalaya plants every morning to see if there are tiny holes or scratches on the leaves. These are indications that the plants are infested by pin worms or cutworms, which I remove manually .I also suggest that biodegradable waste be burned under the trellis in the early morning or late afternoon as the smoke will drive insects away.In fact, I grow the native variety as it is resistant to pest. It is shorter to other cultivars but it has thicker pulp.

I start to harvest after 45 days. And for about 90 days, I pick one to two fruits every other day. Like most households, my family often cooks pinakbet or ampalaya con egg. And we don’t mind its bitter taste as we know it’s because ampalaya contains momordicin, a compound found to be effective in treating diabetes.

I would like to comments on this topic.

It is still practiced in most Municipal Cemeteries
in Bohol that non Catholics are not allowed to be
buried in the municipal cemetery. Why? According
to the priest, it is Catholic Cemetery.

In Davao, no body is denied to bury in the Municipal
Cemetery.

One of my classmate, a Baptist was buried in the
Masonic Cemetery because he was denied to be
buried in the municipal cemetery in their municipality.

THE TEACHERS

We realized that being a teacher is incomparable
As we care for our students. We learn to cover our
sorrows with smile.

We learn how to stay vigorous despite all the task
we endured.

We learn how to give hope even though ours is
unclearly seen.

We learn how to give strength even at times
that we are weak.

Nobody would know what kind of life a teacher has.

Unless they become one.

I am a happy teacher.

World Teachers' Day observed on Oct. 5
By Pia Lee-Brago (The Philippine Star) Updated September 26, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (1) View comments

MANILA, Philippines â€"  At 10:05 a.m. on Oct. 5, school bells all over the world would be sounded to signal the World Teachers’ Day celebration.

At this time, all teachers nationwide will take a break from their classroom duties to allow the performance of a unique classroom program.

In line with the Teachers’ Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day Celebration, the Department of Education (DepEd) has started conducting various activities to honor Filipino teachers nationwide.

The DepEd issued Memorandum 352 in joining the rest of the world in celebrating World Teachers’ Day on Oct.5.

Education Secretary Armin Luistro called on the support of all private and public elementary and secondary schools to give recognition to Filipino mentors who hold one of the biggest responsibilities in our society of molding the mind of future generations of Filipinos.

“Oct. 5 is a day to honor our teachers who play a critical role in guiding our children and in providing them life-long learning,” Luistro said.

To prepare for this special occasion, the Teachers’ Month Campaign (TMC) was established in 2008. It is spearheaded by the TMC Council of Leaders and Steering Committee composed of representatives from key business and academic institutions and private education organizations.

Government agencies also support the occasion to contribute to the growth and development of the teaching profession in the country, as well as to publicly express recognition and appreciation to teachers and mentors.

With the theme, “My Teacher, My Hero,” this year’s Teachers’ Month Campaign was launched during the Awarding Ceremony of the 2010 Metrobank Foundation’s Search for Outstanding Teachers on Sept. 3.

Luistro stressed the need to acknowledge the efforts of our modern-day heroes.

“Our teachers are the provider of education which is one of the basic rights of our children. And despite facing various obstacles that test their creativity and patience, they steadfastly stand by their commitment to give their mentoring best,” Luistro said.

“Our own version of TMC aims to generate widespread awareness and support for World Teachers’ Day. This occasion allows us to acknowledge the unique role teachers play in guiding families, strengthening societies and building nations,” Luistro said.

TMC will revitalize the image of teaching as a vocation by increasing public awareness on the value of teachers in Philippine society and national development.

It will also articulate the accessibility of a career in teaching by outlining available scholarship grants and school subsidy programs.

Through this celebration, various establishments would also give value added services or discounts to active and retired Filipino teachers.

As part of the activity, students are encouraged to say “Thank you” to at least one teacher who has made a difference in his/her life. Students are encouraged to write a letter or send a card to their teacher.

“Saying ‘thank you’ is just our simple way of giving back to our teachers who have touched our lives in one way or another. If we consider overseas Filipino workers as our modern-day heroes, we should also do the same for our teachers. We should have a ‘Mother’s Day’ type of celebration but on a grander scale,” Luistro said.

All DepEd divisions will mobilize the community and commercial establishments in paying tribute to teachers by giving them discounts or freebies or even special promos for teachers for a particular period during the month leading to Oct. 5.

All regional directors, schools division superintendents and school heads are encouraged to actively lead all activities for the Teachers’ Month Campaign and World Teachers’ Day.

Aron minos ug gasto ang companiya, lalake na lang ang mag flight attendant kay dili moburos.
#1274
Quote from: philippines on September 13, 2010, 02:49:17 PM
excerpt from PDI:

PAL does not discriminate against pregnant flight attendants. Preventing them from flying is for the safety of mother and child. Many cabin attendants delay revealing that they are pregnant. PAL extends the standard maternity benefits provided by law, even advancing P30,000 of their SSS benefits to cover expenses. Any earned vacation leaves may be used before applying the pregnancy and maternity leaves. Seniority is not lost during pregnancy. Beyond these, the pregnant cabin attendant is no longer entitled to any pay (no work, no pay) just like any ground staff member.

From April 2009 to March 2010, a total of 65 cabin attendants went on maternity leave (or roughly one pregnancy every six days). Almost all of them returned to work again despite allegations of unfair work rules or discriminatory practices.

Of all the profession and vocation, ngano nga wala may flight attendant mga lalake. Daghan nang babae  doctor, pilot, army, drivers and etc. Ngano nga wala pa may lalake nga flight attendant.

As for the regular pay, the cabin crews’ pay (which is all-inclusive because of the peculiarity of their job), the domestic cabin attendant gets on the average around P40,000 a month, while an international cabin attendant gets P60,000 a month. The flight purser gets P80,000 monthly.

Moto-o mo nga ang Kalibotan may takdang panahon nga matudas?

Please read the verse from the Bible:

First, it is important we see this in its context: "But the heavens and the earth which now exist are kept in store by the same word, reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition [destruction] of ungodly men" (II Peter 3:7). This fire is the judgment of incorrigible sinners, the Lake of Fire, which is the second death (Revelation 20:14). In this unquenchable fire, likened by John the Baptist to being "baptize[d] . . . with fire," the unrepentant will completely burn up (Matthew 3:10-12).

Peter goes on to describe the effects of this unquenchable fire: ". . . in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up" (II Peter 3:10). An unquenchable fire is one that cannot be put out. It burns until it has consumed all combustible material. Then it dies out for lack of anything else to consume. Everything will be burned up except for spirit beings, who are not affected by physical fire.

In verse 6, Peter uses the example of Noah's flood as a type of the future cleansing of the earth by fire: ". . . by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water." Just as the earth continued to exist after the Flood, so it will continue to exist after the coming worldwide "Gehenna" fire (Matthew 5:29-30; 10:28).

Notice what Peter says in II Peter 3:13:"Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." In the book of Revelation, "a new heaven and a new earth" are mentioned immediately after the account of the Lake of Fire:

"Then Death and Hades [the grave] were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away [by fire]; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. . . . 'Behold, the tabernacle [dwelling] of God is with men, and He will dwell with them [on the earth] . . ." (Revelation 20:14 â€" 21:3).

It is plain from this passage that the earth will still exist (Ecclesiastes 1:4).

The simple explanation of II Peter 3:10, then, is that the surface of the earth and everything physical on it, including the incorrigible wicked, will be destroyed by an all-consuming fire. God will then renew the earth's surface (Psalm 104:30) and make it a pure, glorious habitation for Himself and the rest of the God Kingdom (Revelation 21-22).
