Marissa Lapid relieved case is over, says lawyer
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (UPDATE) - The wife of Sen. Lito Lapid is relieved that a US district court has handed down its verdict after she pled guilty to cash smuggling.

Marissa Tadeo Lapid was sentenced to three years of probation, including five months home confinement, a $40,000 fine, and forfeiture of $159,700 after pleading guilty to cash smuggling and conspiracy to structure money transactions.

Natalie Collins, spokesperson for lawyer Daniel Bogden of the US District Court of Nevada in Las Vegas, said Mrs. Lapid was charged for “knowingly and willfully conspiring and agreeing with other persons, both known and unknown, to commit the crime of structuring transactions with intent to evade reporting requirement.”

“Mrs. Lapid pled to two counts that are reporting violations and she received three years probation. There was no evidence that any of the money involved in the case was improperly obtained. It was simply a failure to properly report the money,” the decision read.

Senator Lito Lapid and wife Marissa Tadeo LapidIn a message to ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, Lapid’s lawyer Eliot Krieger said Mrs. Lapid can now breathe easy that the one-year trial is over.

“Mrs. Lapid is relieved to have this over,” he said.

He said Mrs. Lapid’s immigration status and her green card were not raised in the hearing yesterday. “The criminal case just had to do with the reporting violations,” he said.

Mrs. Lapid was arrested at the Las Vegas International Airport on January 15, 2012. The arrest was based on a warrant issued against her for allegedly smuggling $50,000 in cash at the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Nov. 27, 2010.

In a copy of the arrest warrant obtained by ABS-CBN North America News Bureau’s Bev Llorente, the senator’s wife said she only had with her $10,000 and P10,000 in cash. But two socks containing $10,000 each and a cloth bag with $20,000 were found during an examination of Marissa’s carry-on luggage.

Mrs. Lapid was charged before US District Court Magistrate Judge Peggy Leen of Las Vegas in Nevada with a count each of cash bulk smuggling and conspiracy to structure transactions to evade reporting requirements.

The maximum penalty for conspiracy is a five-year prison sentence and a fine of $250,000 while the maximum penalty for bulk smuggling is five years imprisonment.

Collins said that inn addition to jail time, Mrs. Lapid is subject to a three-year off supervised release plus $100 special assessment per count at the time of sentencing.

No jury trial

In the plea agreement prepared by Assistant US Attorney Michael Chu and defense counsel Eliot Krieger, Mrs. Lapid pleaded guilty to bulk smuggling and conspiracy to structure transactions to evade reporting requirements.

Mrs. Lapid also agreed to waive her jury trial, to confront witnesses and to cross-examine them, the right to remain silent at such trial, right to testify in her own defense, the right to compel witness to appear at such a trial and testify on the defendant’s behalf, the right to have assistance of an attorney.

She can no longer withdraw her guilty pleas after she had entered them in court.

The plea stated Mrs. Lapid “knowingly concealed more than $10,000” in US currency on her person or other container.

When she was arrested in possession of $40,000, Mrs. Lapid remarked, “I’m sorry, it’s for my house.”

Mrs. Lapid will no longer wear an ankle monitor while under house confinement. Krieger said the senator’s wife could be allowed to travel after the 5-month confinement if allowed by the probation department.

Lapid loses $159,700 in US banks

Lapid’s decision to plead guilty to “structure cash deposits” also led to the forfeiture of  her assets in US banks.

A Philippine Star report said officials explained that Mrs. Lapid committed to “structure cash deposits” by separating a single deposit above the reporting threshold into two or more separate deposits for the purpose of evading” her financial institutions’ reporting requirements.

These financial institutions are banks located in the US. These banks are legally required since 1996 to report to the federal government cash deposits that were above a certain dollar amount, $10,000, “the reporting threshold,” by making the so-called currency transaction report (CTR) when a depositor makes a deposit.

The scheme involves breaking larger amount into two or more amounts that were less than the original amount and deposited them into multiple bank accounts, often on the same day.

According to the indictment, Mrs. Lapid on Jan. 5, 2009, deposited $5,700 cash at a Las Vegas branch of J. P. Morgan Chase Bank, a domestic financial institution.

Two days later, on Jan. 7, 2009, Mrs. Lapid deposited another $5,700 cash into the same bank account.

On or about April 8, 2009, Mrs. Lapid deposited $9,000 cash at a Las Vegas branch of Bank of America.

On April 8, 2009, Mrs. Lapid deposited another $9,000 cash at a Las Vegas branch of Wells Fargo Bank.

On May 11, 2009, she made another deposit of $9,000 cash at the Las Vegas Bank of America.

On the same day, Mrs. Lapid deposited $9,000 cash at a Las Vegas Wells Fargo Bank.

A week later, on May 18, 2009, Mrs. Lapid deposited $6,000 cash at Las Vegas Bank of America; $8,000 cash and $6,000 cash in Las Vegas JP Morgan and in Las Vegas Wells Fargo Bank of America.

On July 20, 2009, she deposited $8,000 cash at Las Vegas JP Morgan Chase Bank; the following day, she made another $9,000 cash deposit into the same bank account.

On Dec. 23, 2009, Mrs. Lapid deposited $5,000 cash each separately at Bank of America and at Las Vegas JP Morgan Chase Bank.

And on June 7, 2010, five months before she was arrested, Mrs. Lapid deposited $9,000 cash at JP Morgan Chase Bank at Las Vegas.

The US government forfeited all the “property, real or personal, involved in the offense, and any property traceable to such property,” including the $40,000 confiscated from Mrs. Lapid during her November 2010 arrival, and the monies she deposited in her bank accounts to the tune of $159,700.  -- With a report by Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau; and the Philippine Star

CEBU CITY â€" As the video of two college students having sex continues to spread, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Central Visayas offered to investigate and help stop the video from circulating.

“If this girl will ask for justice sa pagkaguba sa iyang pagkatao ug sa iyang pagkababaye tungod aning scandal (for how this scandal has harmed her), we will be more than willing to help. This will also teach a lesson to others not to do such an act,” said Eddie Benigay, CIDG Central Visayas director.

Benigay, in an interview with reporters on Tuesday, said the man involved in the video might also be made to face charges for allegedly spreading the file. Copies of the three-part video have reportedly found their way to pirated DVDs and are also circulated by mobile phones.

The police, said Benigay, received reports that the man’s phone was repaired by a cell phone shop, which may have also uploaded the video.

“If that is true, then he will have to show documents or evidences to show that he was not the one who uploaded it,” added Benigay.

The video, allegedly shot two years ago, shows two students having sex. In one clip, the girl wears her college uniform and ID.

Students of that university were reportedly instructed by the school’s administration not to wear their uniforms starting Tuesday, to keep them from being bullied or embarrassed.

“We were told not to wear uniforms until further notice. One of our schoolmates was bullied by someone from another school because of the scandal,” one of the students told Sun.Star Cebu.

Benigay added that a case for violating Republic Act (RA) 9995, or the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009, and RA 9262, or the Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 can be filed against the man involved in the video, depending on their investigation.

“But the question is if the girl is willing to file a case,” said Benigay.

He admitted the CIDG Central Visayas has no capability yet of tracing who might have uploaded the video, but said they can help prevent its further circulation.

“To those who have a copy of the video in their mobile phones, just keep it or better erase it. Do not spread it,” appealed Benigay. (JBT of Sun.Star Cebu)

Tinun-an `gitaktak’; Rama miapelar
Philip A. Cerojano ug Roger E. Vallena

“It is so much for her to be in that situation, where she can’t finish her study,” nagkanayon si Rama.

“They (duha ka mga tinun-an) need counseling. They need parental guidance. They need so much understanding,” pasabot sa mayor.

“If this girl will ask (for) justice, we will be more willing to help,” matod ni Binigay sa mga tigbalita.

(BRD)

CEBU CITY -- A woman died when her partner’s genital was locked tight inside hers, a radio report said.

In a Bombo Radyo report, the victims were having sex in a lodging house in Guizo, Mandaue City when the incident happened.

They were brought to the hospital but the woman was declared dead on arrival.

The doctor, however, refused to disclose the identities of the victims.

Both were said to be working in an export processing company in Mandaue City and each had relationships respectively.

Police are investigating the incident where it was reported that the male’s genital was cut.

The phenomenon is called penis captivus in medical terms or vaginal lock in which a woman's vaginal muscles clamp around the penis during intercourse so firmly it causes the male to be 'locked' inside her. (Sunnex with wire reports)

*reflection*

Matthew 2:1-12

The Magi were learned people well-known in olden times, capable of foreseeing the future by looking at the stars. They were also able to see God's will in the day-to-day events of their time. The Magi saw the star mentioned in Scripture and not a physical body. In the book of Numbers is the story of Balaam, a diviner and his talking donkey. Without knowing it, he prophesied. He said, "I see him, though not now; I behold him, though not near: A star shall advance from Jacob, and a staff shall rise from Israel... and Jacob shall overcome his foes." Balaam, prophesied 1200 years before the coming of Christ. From then on the Jews awaited for the rising of that star, the Messiah.

Matthew puts before us the Magi from the Orient, who were identified as Melchior, Balthasar and Gaspar, that led them to search for the new born king. God had used the natural means of a star to bring the learned Magi to Jerusalem, but to continue their journey they needed the revelation of the Scripture. The evangelist tells us that the long-awaited deliverer of the house of Jacob has arrived. Jesus is the star. Led by the light of the Messiah, the pagan people of the earth (represented by the Magi) moved towards Jerusalem to present their gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.

The star signifies light, Christmas. In our own time now, we always have the star about our cribs, hang it on the Christmas tree and it is also seen in many homes. Let us point it out to the children, to your children and tell them that the star is a sign, and the real star is Jesus; he is the light that illumines all people.

The Magi stand for the people of the whole world who let themselves be guided by Jesus' message of peace and love. They are the image of the Church, made up of people from every race, tribe, language and nation. To become a member of the Church does not mean that one loses or gives up one's own identity. It does not mean submitting to a false and unjust uniformity. People should keep their cultural characteristics and enrich the Church with them. No person is so rich that they lack nothing, and nobody is so poor that they can offer nothing. Therefore, like the Magi, the star appears to us, calling us to offer our gifts to the poor and the needy.

AMEN

Gospel Mt 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea,
in the days of King Herod,
behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is the newborn king of the Jews?
We saw his star at its rising
and have come to do him homage.”
When King Herod heard this,
he was greatly troubled,
and all Jerusalem with him.
Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people,
He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea,
for thus it has been written through the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
since from you shall come a ruler,
who is to shepherd my people Israel.”
Then Herod called the magi secretly
and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance.
He sent them to Bethlehem and said,
“Go and search diligently for the child.
When you have found him, bring me word,
that I too may go and do him homage.”
After their audience with the king they set out.
And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them,
until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures
and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod,
they departed for their country by another way.

Second Reading Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6

Brothers and sisters:

You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace
that was given to me for your benefit,
namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation.
It was not made known to people in other generations
as it has now been revealed
to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit:
that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body,
and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13.

R. (cf. 11) Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

O God, with your judgment endow the king,
and with your justice, the king’s son;
He shall govern your people with justice
and your afflicted ones with judgment.

R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.[/color]

Justice shall flower in his days,
and profound peace, till the moon be no more.
May he rule from sea to sea,
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;
the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage,
all nations shall serve him.

R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.[/b]

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,

He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;
the lives of the poor he shall save.

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

Reading 1 Is 60:1-6

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come,
the glory of the Lord shines upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth,
and thick clouds cover the peoples;
but upon you the LORD shines,
and over you appears his glory.
Nations shall walk by your light,
and kings by your shining radiance.
Raise your eyes and look about;
they all gather and come to you:
your sons come from afar,
and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.

Then you shall be radiant at what you see,
your heart shall throb and overflow,
for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you,
the wealth of nations shall be brought to you.
Caravans of camels shall fill you,
dromedaries from Midian and Ephah;
all from Sheba shall come
bearing gold and frankincense,
and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

* reflection *

Luke 1:39-45

In today's Gospel, we have heard that Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth whom God had shown his greatness by giving them a child to prepare the way for his Son. We all know the story what happened to Mary and Elizabeth when they met. They both proclaimed the glory of God in each other.

When Mary entered the house of Zechariah, greeting Elizabeth, the Baptist (representing the Old Testament people awaiting the Messiah) still in the womb, leapt for joy, anticipating his joy in the Good News he would proclaim in his life. Elizabeth filled with the Holy Spirit like an ancient prophet, pronounced a double blessing on Mary: first, her role as Mother of her Lord, bringing to birth the true Davidic king; second, because she believed, the prophecy is fulfilled.

Luke wants us to see Mary as the new Ark of the Covenant. God chose not to live in a building but in the womb of a woman. "The son of Mary is the Lord himself." Having the Lord within oneself is not reserved only to Mary. Each community and every one of us must become like Mary, an "ark of the covenant." Our task is to bring the Lord to others. Do we?

One thing can tell us if we are an "ark of the covenant," and that is joy. Wherever Mary goes she causes an outpouring of joy: the Baptist leaps for joy, Elizabeth shouts her joy, the poor are full of joy because their liberation is at hand. Does our presence bring people joy?

Mary is called "blessed" because she believed that the promise made to her by the Lord would be fulfilled. How many promises did God make through the prophets? When their fulfilment was delayed, people doubted God. They placed their trust in themselves and they ended in failure. Mary is "blessed" because she trusted God. She knew that in spite of appearances to the contrary the Word of the Lord would be fulfilled. What about us? Do we believe in the Word of God?

Certainty that everything that happens is part of God's plan, and that our lives will end in success.

AMEN

Gospel Lk 1:39-45

Mary set out
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
"Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled."

Reading 2 Heb 10:5-10

Brothers and sisters:

When Christ came into the world, he said:
"Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
in holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight.
Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll,
behold, I come to do your will, O God.'"

First he says, "Sacrifices and offerings,
holocausts and sin offerings,
you neither desired nor delighted in."
These are offered according to the law.
Then he says, "Behold, I come to do your will."
He takes away the first to establish the second.
By this "will," we have been consecrated
through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19.

R. (4) Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

O shepherd of Israel, hearken,
from your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.
Rouse your power,
and come to save us.

R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

Once again, O LORD of hosts,
look down from heaven, and see;
take care of this vine,
and protect what your right hand has planted
the son of man whom you yourself made strong.

R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

May your help be with the man of your right hand,
with the son of man whom you yourself made strong.
Then we will no more withdraw from you;
give us new life, and we will call upon your name.

R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved.

Lectionary: 12

Reading 1 Mi 5:1-4a

Thus says the LORD:
You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah
too small to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel;
whose origin is from of old,
from ancient times.
Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time
when she who is to give birth has borne,
and the rest of his kindred shall return
to the children of Israel.
He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock
by the strength of the LORD,
in the majestic name of the LORD, his God;
and they shall remain, for now his greatness
shall reach to the ends of the earth;
he shall be peace.

7. Heaven’s Gate

What is it about: When the comet Hale-Bopp appeared in 1997, Marshall Applewhite, the leader of the UFO cult Heaven's Gate, believed rumors that were spreading at the time among paranormal followers that an alien spacecraft was trailing it. For Applewhite, this so-called spaceship would “transport their spirits aboard for a journey to another planet” and that “their souls would ascend to the spaceship and be given new bodies.”

What happened next: Applewhite and 38 of his followers committed mass suicide -- the largest to occur inside the US. Applewhite made the cover of both Time and Newsweek after the suicide. Years later, he was parodied in an episode of the cartoon "Family Guy."

#171
6. Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple

What it is about: Jim Jones, who founded the Christian doomsday cult Peoples Temple in the 1950s, earlier predicted that the world will end in a nuclear war. He then developed a belief called “translation,” in which he and his followers would die together and move to another planet for a life of bliss.

What happened next: His followers drank cyanide-laced grape punch in a mass suicide in 1978. Jones, who died of a gunshot wound to the head in 1978, was found to have been “unbalanced” because of excessive drug use.

5. Y2K

What it is about: Several analysts predicted that the entire computer network would crash in the year 2000, causing widespread dysfunction to a population that has long been dependent on technology. This as many computers are programmed to record dates using the last two digits of every year â€" in other words, the year 2000 would register as 1900.

What happened next: The year 2000 turned out to be just like any other year, save for a few scattered power failures. There was no way but up for computing devices, with the invention of smartphones and tablet computers in recent years.
#173
4. May 21, 2011 rapture

What it is about: Harold Camping, an American pastor and Christan radio broadcaster, predicted that the world would end on May 21, 2011. He said this is the date of the “rapture” â€" when Jesus Christ returns to earth and gathers the souls of those who have been saved. Camping had previously predicted that Judgment Day would occur on or about September 6, 1994.

What happened next: Well, the world is still here, and it’s nearing 2013. When the so-called rapture did not happen in May 2011, Camping said his prediction was an “incorrect and sinful statement” and announced that he is out of the prediction business.

3. “The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon”

What is it about: According to the New York Times best-seller “The 1980s: Countdown to Armageddon” by Christian writer Hal Lindsey, it was possible that the battle of Armageddon could take place soon, noting, “the decade of the 1980s could very well be the last decade of history as we know it." Among his scenarios is a surprise Soviet nuclear attack.

What happened next: The Soviet Union collapsed and not only did the world survive, so did Lindsey, who went on to write “Planet Earth - 2000 A.D.,” which states that Christians should not plan to still be on earth by the year 2000. Lindsey currently resides in Texas.
#175
2. Pat Robertson

What it is about: Best-selling author and “The 700 Club” host Pat Robertson first predicted in 1976 that the end of the world was coming in 1982. In a May 1980 broadcast of his show, he even went on the record to say that “I guarantee you by the end of 1982 there is going to be a judgment on the world.”

What happened next: Robertson continues to make predictions from the price of oil to who will win the US presidential elections. In 2007, he predicted that the US would suffer from a terrorist attack. When this didn’t happen, he said this was probably because God heeded our prayers and spared us.

1. Banahaw doomsday

What it is about: In 1999, several pilgrims flocked to the mystic Mount Banahaw to welcome the new millennium, which many believed will bring the end of the world. Isabel Suarez, a woman who leads a sect called Mistica, said the so-called end of the world will come through earthquakes, famine and other disasters.

What happened next: It has been 12 years since the so-called doomsday, with the Philippines undergoing both triumphs and hardships. Mount Banahaw can still be visited by pilgrims and tourists alike.
#177
Even before the birth of Jesus Christ, humans have already been predicting the end of the world. The Romans speculated that a “mystical number” revealed to Romulus by 12 eagles meant the destruction of Rome.

Biblical scholars also interpreted passages such as “Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all these things be accomplished” (Matthew 24:34) as a warning of impending doom.

As we prepare ourselves for the so-called end of the world this Friday, December 21, based on an earlier interpretation of the Mayan calendar, here’s a look back at some of the most popular doomsday predictions that didn’t come true â€" although two ended with tragic consequences.

I don't think the world will end in 2012. Other civilizations, just as advanced as that of the Mayas, also made predictions regarding the end of the world. Those predictions did not come to pass, and life went on as normal. While the Mayas were good at observing the seasons and could predict eclipses based on what had regularly happened in the past, they really had no way of predicting the future.

Legarda admitted painful and forced sex can happen even between married persons.

“Karapatan ng asawa na ipagtanggol ang kanyang sarili kaya yan ang ibig sabihin ng katagang yun,” she said.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada ruled the proposal was out of order since the proposed amendment had already been rejected in the last debate.

Sotto then proposed that he be included in the bicameral committee that would consolidate the final versions of the RH bill if passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“Kung yung sin tax bill nadali natin sa bicam, e di pwede din nating madali ito,” he said

Sotto then replied: “Definitely, I will not be guilty of that, Mr. President.”

Sen. Pia Cayetano, one of the authors of the bill, said the phrase simply means that a woman “has the right to be intimate and enjoy her personal relations with her husband.”

“I have the right to safe and satisfying sex. I have consulted my colleague, Sen. Loren [Legarda], and she also feels the same way. We have three Filipinas in this hall that demand the right to safe and satisfying sex and all we are asking is that every Filipina in this country be honored with that right,” she said.

“We are not asking that it be defined. Ano ho yun? But we are acknowledging the fact that that is a right we have,” she added.

She also quoted her brother, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, when the phrase became a contentious issue in the previous debate.

"Hindi lamang po pumalpak yung pills, ipinanganak pa siya na may malubhang karamdaman," he said.

The lawmaker said at least 2 other senators have lost children due to complications caused by the intake of birth control pills.

Sen. Tito Sotto earlier said he lost his second child, Vincent Paul, after he was born with a weak heart and needed blood transfusions every day.

Revilla noted that the senators' children who died allegedly due to side effects of birth control pills all seemed to have heart defects.

She drew laughter from the Senate gallery after saying that she is “seriously contemplating the passage of a bill that will make it punishable under the Penal Code for a husband to give unsatisfying sex to his wife.”

MANILA, Philippines - Yet another senator has blamed that he lost a child due to complications caused by the intake of birth control pills by the child's mother.

Sen. Bong Revilla said he cannot, in conscience, vote for the reproductive health bill because he witnessed first-hand the ill effects of taking artificial contraceptives.

Revilla said his wife, actress and Cavite 2nd District Rep. Lani Mercado, gave birth to a girl in 1990. The child died after 26 days due to a heart condition.

"Lani and I lost a daughter due to a complication caused by the use of contraceptive pills. Her name was Maria Alexandra. She was born in 1990 ngunit 26 na araw din siya na buhay. Ipinanganak po siya na butas ang puso," he told fellow senators.

Revilla said that before Mercado gave birth, she was religiously taking birth control pills.

Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago, a co-sponsor of the RH bill, said the phrase is included in the final document of a United Nations conference and may be considered as ripened into international law.

She added: “I am a Filipina by birth and by training at the UP College of Law and by inclination. I am also a married woman and I insist that whoever is married to me should give me safe and satisfying sex.”

Married women have a right to safe, satisfying sex, say Miriam, Pia, Loren

MANILA, Philippines â€" Women senators on Monday chided Sen. Tito Sotto for moving to strike out the phrase "safe and satisfying sex" in the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

During the period of amendments, Sotto said he will no longer ask that the Senate remove the entire phrase but only the words "and satisfying."

“The reason why I wanted to remove the whole phrase originally is that I believe Reproductive Health in the context of a true Filipina does not pertain to safe and satisfying sex. When a true Filipina speaks of reproductive health, she means family, marriage, responsible parenthood, nurturing and rearing her children and the mother,” he said, causing a commotion in the Senate gallery.

Sotto said there are some phrases that are just not acceptable to Filipino culture.

“For the sake of the law, dahil mas magandang pakinggan at mas katanggap-tanggap sa ating mga kababayan, alisin na antin yung satisfying, Anyway it's subjective,” he said.

Miriam: An idea whose time has come

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, a co-sponsor of the measure, had words for the Catholic Church in explaining her vote.

"I vote yes. The Catholic church has steadfastly rejected RH bill. No force more powerful than an idea whose time has come," she said.

"Copernicus refused to believe that sun revolved around the earth. He was condemned by the Church," she added.

She said the Vatican has made many mistakes in the past "because it is a human institution."

"Today is the time for the RH bill. In antiquity, the Church committed grave mistakes. It is not perfect, it is only human," she said.

"Surveys showed women die because of birth complications because they are too ignorant to control their bodies," Santiago added. "God gave me a conscience, gave me a brain. He asked me to use it for the good of my fellowmen."

Escudero, who also voted in favor of the measure said he is against abortion and is in favor of the RH bill because he wants to ensure the well-being of women and children.

"Pabor ako sa RH bill dahil gusto kong bigyan ng pagkakataon ang mga kabataan na magpasya para sa kanilang mga sarili," he said.

Sotto, the staunchest voice in Senate against the measure, said he will ask for God's forgiveness "for we do not know what we are doing."

"We took an oath, a promise to God. We promised to support the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines, not just the parts that suit us," he said.

"Malamang pagsisihan natin ito," he added.

He also claimed the bill will not even be discussed if President Aquino's mother, Cory, were alive today.

Enrile said the RH bill divided families.

"I hope that RH bill will bring the benefit that was sought to be accomplished," he said. "I vote no. But I hope those who propose the RH bill is proven right. Only time will tell." - with reports from ANC, dzMM

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, who voted in favor of the bill, said the RH bill is part of the solution to family problems.

"If I had a daughter who is a teenager now, gusto ko bang bigyan sya ng condom? Of course not. But as a parent, I can only do so much," he said.

"Don't you want your daughter to have [someone] to approach on reproductive health concerns?" he asked.

"We will fight not only to protect marriages. This is not an incentive to the married, this is also for the unmarried," Cayetano said.
