10 Most Historically Inaccurate Movies
Films that make your high school history teacher cry.
Courtesy of Yahoo Movies

We all accept that movies stretch the truth in the interest of building drama. The following ten flicks, however, treat the truth like it was Silly Putty -- pulling and twisting it until it's unrecognizable.

10,000 B.C.
Director Roland Emmerich is usually a stickler for realism (see: sending a computer virus via Macintosh to aliens in Independence Day). So we hate to inform him that woolly mammoths were not, in fact, used to build pyramids. Heck, woolly mammoths weren't even found in the desert. They wouldn't need to be woolly if that were the case. And there weren't any pyramids in Egypt until 2,500 B.C or so.

Gladiator
Emperor Commodus was not the sniveling sister-obsessed creep portrayed in the movie. A violent alcoholic, sure, but not so whiny. He ruled ably for over a decade rather than ineptly for a couple months. He also didn't kill his father, Marcus Aurelius, who actually died of chickenpox. And instead of being killed in the gladatorial arena, he was murdered in his bathtub.

300
Though this paean to ancient moral codes and modern physical training is based on the real Battle of Thermopylae, the film takes many stylistic liberties. The most obvious one being Persian king Xerxes was not an 8-foot-tall Cirque du Soleil reject. The Spartan council was made up of men over the age of 60, with no one as young as Theron (played by 37-year-old Dominic West). And the warriors of Sparta went into battle wearing bronze armor, not just leather Speedos.

The Last Samurai
The Japanese in the late 19th century did hire foreign advisers to modernize their army, but they were mostly French, not American. Ken Watanabe's character was based on the real Saigo Takamori who committed ritual suicide, or "seppuku," in defeat rather than in a volley of Gatling gun fire. Also, it's doubtful that a 40-something alcoholic Civil War vet, even one with great hair, would master the chopsticks much less the samurai sword.

Apocalypto
This one movie has given entire Anthropology departments migranes. Sure the Maya did have the odd human sacrifice but not to Kulkulkan, the Sun God, and only high-ranking captives taken in battle were killed. The conquistadors arriving at the end of the film made for unlikely saviors: an estimated 90% of indigenous American population was killed by smallpox from the infected Spanish pigs.

Memoirs of a Geisha
The geisha coming-of-age, called "mizuage," was really more of a makeover, where she changed her hairstyle and clothes. It didn't involve her getting... intimate with a client. In the climatic scene where Sayuri wows Gion patrons with her dancing prowess, her routine - which involves some platforms shoes, fake snow, and a strobe light - seems more like a Studio 54 drag show that anything in pre-war Kyoto.

Braveheart
Let's forget the fact that kilts weren't worn in Scotland until about 300 years after William Wallace's day and just do some simple math. According to the movie, Wallace's blue-eyed charm at the Battle of Falkirk was so overpowering, he seduced King Edward II's wife, Isabella of France, and the result of their affair was Edward III. But according to the history books, Isabella was three years old at the time of Falkirk, and Edward III was born seven years after Wallace died.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age
In 1585, when the movie takes place, Queen Elizabeth was 52 years old - Cate Blanchett was 36 when she shot the film - and was not being courted by suitors like Ivan the Terrible (who was dead by then). And though the movie has her rallying the troops at Tilbury astride a white steed in full armor with a sword, in fact she rode side saddle, carrying a baton. She was more of a regal majorette than Joan of Arc.

The Patriot
Revolutionary War figure Francis "The Swamp Fox" Marion was the basis for Mel Gibson's character, but he wasn't the forward-thinking family man they show in the flick. He was a slave owner who didn't get married (to his cousin) until after the war was over. Historians also say that he actively persecuted and murdered native Cherokees. Plus, the climatic Battle of Guilford Court House where he vanquishes his British nemesis? In reality, the Americans lost that one.

2001: A Space Odyssey
According to this film, in year 2001 we would have had manned voyages to Jupiter, a battle of wits with a sentient computer, and a quantum leap in human evolution. Instead we got the Mir Space Station falling from the sky, Windows XP, and Freddy Got Fingered. Apparently the lesson here is that sometimes it's better when the movies get the facts all wrong.

General Topic / 10,000 BC
March 05, 2008, 11:55:22 PM
Taken from ScienceNerds.Info

You might have heard of a movie called “10,000 BC” coming out in March of 2008. If you saw the trailers you might have noticed some things that were  inaccurate, or at least grossly exaggerated, if you have some basic knowledge of prehistory. Were saber-tooth tigers (smilodons) really that big? Did they really have sailboats, domesticated mammoths and cities back in 10,000 BC?

It’s been a while since a real movie has been made based on prehistoric times, but it appears that this movie shamelessly embellishes to be more entertaining to the average Joe. I guess why should I expect anything else from Hollywood by now? Don’t see this movie expecting it to be a scientific documentary. Think of it more as a fantasy film, merely similar to earth-like events, more like The 300, or even The Mummy or Lord of the Rings. Maybe it’s the science nerd in me, but I just can’t stand any movie that implies it is based on historical (or in the case, prehistorical) life or events, but then ignores the likely realities of the time. Maybe that’s why I like documentaries.

Let’s look at some of the items from the trailers:

Saber-Tooth Tiger Size: Smilodon populator, the largest of the saber tooth cats, which went extinct around 10,000 B.C., was no little kitty, but was the size of a large lion. It is known to have been 120 cm, or about 4 feet at the shouder. The scene I am looking at on the 10,000 B.C. movie website shows a smilodon that is more like 7 feet or so at the shoulder, assuming the man is only 4 feet, 6 inches tall!
Saber-Tooth Geography: Another problem. Smilodon species existed in North and South America, whereas the man in the movie who encounters one does not look Native American. Ancestors of Native Americans were just now migrating into the North American continent at about 10,000 BC.
Sailboats: The trailer shows boats with red sails on a river, as well as big, wooden boats. Possible, but not likely… there is no evidence of sail or big boat technology for the time. Mesopotamians had sailboats on their rivers by 4,000 BC, however.
The Wheel: The wheel is not known to used, until invented by the Mesopotamians by 3200 BC, and may have been invented independently elsewhere.
Domesticated mammoth: One trailer version shows humans leading mammoths with some sort of harness. Again, possible, but not likely. Animals, other than dogs and goats, are not known to be domesticated by this time. And used as a beast of burden to help build the pyramids? C’mon! See next.
Cities or large man-made structures: No structures or cities this large and advanced are known by science to have been constructed by 10,000 BC. The structures and cities shown in the trailer look more like middle-eastern cities, closer to 5000-3000 BC. No pyramids, like shown in the trailer, are known to have been built by 10,000 BC.    Wikipedia: List of oldest continuously inhabited cities
Helmeted horseback rider: A man with a stereotypcial-viking-style helmet (were helmets even “invented” yet? … and see knife/metallurgy discussion below) is seen riding on horseback. There is no reason to believe that humans rode horses at this stage in prehistory or had even domesticated them yet. Horses were hunted and eaten at this time however!
Bows/Spear Points: A bow is shown in the trailer. Bows were almost invented by 10,000 BC, but likely they were another mellennium or two away yet. And what’s up with that fancy spear point in the aforementioned scene with the over-sized saber-tooth? That’s an unlikley style - if anything, something made for ceremony - but probably useless for hunting. Some real Stone Age points can be seen here.
Knives/Swords: At least one of the trailers shows what appears to be something like a steel knife and you can hear what sounds like clashing swords. Well, assuming it’s not steel, but bronze, it’s still thousands of years too early. Although there is a possible early (7500 BC) site for copper metal working, it is generally accepted that bronze (alloy of copper and tin) was not discovered until 3500 BC.  As far as iron goes, the earliest known iron-based weapons  were Egyptian and made from meteoric iron. Iron extraction from ore was not done until 1200 BC.    Wikipedia: Metallurgy
Shaving: Maybe. Plucking seems to have pre-dated shaving in human history, but it’s hard to know for sure from the archaeological record. I’m guessing that most men that could (as with today, depends on one’s genetics) grow full beards did grow full beards at this time, though they could have also been decorated, braided, cut short, etc.. There surely would have been much variation in customs and technology from tribe to tribe.
Hunting Tactics: A scene shows a hunter squirming along the ground between unaware grazing mammoths. Now, you don’t have to be a seasoned hunter or zoologist to correctly guess it would take about a half second for the mammoth to stomp the $%&@ out of him.
Where do you learn about the real life of 10,000 BC? From an authoritative scientific source or something that get it’s information from a scientific source. Here are a couple sources to get you started:

10th Millennium BC, on Wikipedia

Birth of Civilization: See the National Geographic Channel’s Birth of Civilization, which does a good job of covering the evolution of culture in the middle east from about 12,000 BC through 3,000 BC.

Around 10,000 BC, there were less than 5 million people on earth, scattered among all continents except Antarctica. The earth was going through a period of global warming. Receding glaciers allowed the ancestors of Native Americans to migrate from Asia. Humans were hunter-gatherers and many nomadic. Agriculture has not really taken off yet, although goats were domesticated in Persia, and figs domesticated in the Jordan River valley at about this time. In Mesopotamia, people began making beer (hey, gotta have your priorities!) from the grain they were gathering. Evolutionarily, humans were essentially the same as now, though there are likely some slight changes since then.

Despite the inaccuracies, I will still see the movie when it comes out, but will, of course, consider it a fantasy film. I guess we’ll imagine it as a world that could have been - maybe on another planet. There are rumors that The History Channel might do a documentary about a more authentic version of the 10,000 BC era (as they did with The 300). I hope so… it’s only right!

Bohol Tourism | Bohol Travel & Tour / Bisaya Kang Daku...
November 13, 2007, 12:47:54 AM
BISAYA KANG DAKO KUNG.....

1. You feel insulted when a non-Bisdak ridicules someone by saying "Bisaya", but it's okay if another Bisdak uses it to another Bisdak, as in "ah, Bisayaa sab oy!"

2. You feel proud when Matud Nila is being sang and you sing along with it bisan dili nimo memorize.

3. Hibal-an nimo kung unsa ang "habal-habal" bisan wala pa ka kasakay niani.

4. Common usages kung ga-tinagalog: the use of "kuwan" as interjection, ang superlative nga pirmi gamiton mao ang "masyado", i.e., maingay masyado, sobra masyado, bilisan mo masyado (read: paspasi lagi) adunay tendency nga pulihan lang ang "o" or "a" og "i", i.e., ang atop into atip, ang kan-on> into kan-in, ang sud-an into sud)

5. You know what "itlog mo 'noy orange" means.

6. You know that the karaang "bayle" aron mahimong modern gipulihan na og  disco" (discoral).

7. Aduna kay hibaw-an nga at least usa ka kanta ni Yoyoy Villame or Max Surban bisan sa tono lang.

8. You can use varied terms of endearment for friends and relatives like bay, parts, paparts, migo, parekoy, pareng, choy, higala, kid, gaw, gaweks, manoy, nong, inse, ditse, iyo, iya, palangga, pangga, gang.

9. You call someone "Inday" and/or "Dodong" as a term of affection and hate it when other non-Bisdaks use the term as if its a title given for a househelp.

10. You know what "maninghag" is?

11. You know Vino Kulafu and Fighter Wine...sometimes you even know their jingles!

12. Instead of Stork, you chose Snowbear or you buy Timbura when you mean Corniks.

13. You're familiar with the brand Loalde in clothing.

14. You crave for inun-unan, paklay, ginamay, halang-halang, kinilaw, ginamos, buwad, binignit,, sikwate paresan sa puto maya.

15. Esteban Escudero and Golyat are folk heroes.

16. "Handumanan sa Usa Ka Awit" is closer to your heart than "Maalaala Mo Kaya" TV show.

17. At ...pag-nagulat- nabigla ang mga Bisdak ang biglang sigaw ay "ay b****" o kaya "ay o*** sa kabayo"

18. SUTUKIL is as common as TAPSILOG; in fact you know that SUTUKIL came first.

19. Your common pulutan for tuba drinking is "TARGET" - asin nga targeton lang nimo sa imong tudlo.

20. You have at least once in your lifetime experienced "Ang Mysterio sa Paglawig sa Barko Padulong Manila", a phenomenon that when the boat is approaching Manila, everybody around you suddenly becomes Tagalog speaking nga adtong miaging adlaw lang pwerting Bisaya pa ninyo!

21. You whisper Bisaya to a fellow Bisdak in the midst of a Tagalog crowd ...and he replies loudly to you in Tagalog!

22. The first question you ask when you found out that someone is Bisdak, "taga-asa man diay ka?"

Styles of Art

Artists used many styles in their paintings and drawings. Here are some of the more common styles of art.

Abstract
Abstract artists felt that paintings did not have to show only things that were recognizable. In their paintings they did not try to show people, animals, or places exactly as they appeared in the real world. They mainly used color and shape in their paintings to show emotions. Some Abstract art is also called Non-objective art. In non-objective art, you do not see specific objects. It is not painted to look like something specific.  Artists: Sonia Delaunay, Jackson Pollock

Cubism
Cubism is modern art made up mostly of paintings. The paintings are not supposed to look real The artist uses geometric shapes to show what he is trying to paint. Early cubists used mainly grays, browns, greens, and yellows. After 1914, Cubists started to use brighter colors. Cubism was the beginning of the Abstract and Non-objective art styles.  Artists: Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque

Expressionism
In Expressionist Art, the artist tries to express certain feelings about some thing. The artists that painted in this style were more concerned with having their paintings express a feeling than in making the painting look exactly like what they were painting.  Artists: Marc Chagall , Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Kirchner

Fauvism
Fauvism was an art style that lasted only four years, beginning in 1905. The leader of this movement was Henri Matisse. The word Fauvism is french for "wild beasts". It got this name because the paintings had bright and unusual colors. The subjects in the paintings were shown in a simple way, and the colors and patterns were bright and wild.  Artist: Henri Matisse

Impressionism
Impressionism was developed in France during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces of art were painted as if someone just took a quick look at the subject of the painting. The paintings were usually in bold colors and did not have a lot of detail. The paintings in this style were usually outdoor scenes like landscapes. The pictures were painted to look like they were shimmering.  Artists: Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissaro

Pointillism
In Pointillism, the artist uses small dots or strokes of paint to make up the pictures. From far away, these dots blend together to form the picture and give the impression of different colors as they blend together.  Artists: Paul Seurat, Paul Signac

Pop Art
Pop art can be any every day item that is drawn in a brash and colorful way. Pop Art is short for Popular Art. It is inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment.  Artists: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenberg, David Hockney

Postimpressionism
Postimpressionism began in the 19th century. It was mainly still lifes and landscapes. The postimpressionists liked to use lots of colors and shadows.  Artists: Vincent Van Gogh,Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne

Primitivism
Primitive Art looks like art that is done by a child. Usually the picture is painted very simply, and the subjects are "flat", or two-dimensional.  Artists: Paul Klee, Henri Matisse

Realism
Realism is a type of art that shows things exactly as they appear in life. It began in the 18th century, but the greatest Realist era was in the mid-19th century. Most Realists were from France, but there were some famous American painters who were Realists also.  Artists: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Leonardo Da Vinci, Gustave Courbet, Honore Daumier, Thomas Eakins, John Singleton Copley

Surrealism
Surrealists paintings were generally based on dreams. Their paintings were filled with familiar objects which were painted to look strange or mysterious. They hoped their odd paintings would make people look at things in a different way and change the way they felt about things. They thought that their paintings might stir up feelings in the back of peoples minds. Artists: Salvador Dali, Henri Rousseau, Max Ernst

Fashion Trend / What's your personal style?
November 12, 2007, 08:39:11 PM
So what are the hallmarks of personal style?

1. Comfort

It starts with the clothes you feel comfortable in. Do you have one perfect pair of pants? A dress you always wear? And are you more at ease in neutrals than vivid colors? Narrow it down and don't feel guilty that you are 'boring' if beige and grey feels good to you. If clothes don't make you feel good, you''ll constantly feel insecure -- and that is as obvious to onlookers as a torn hem.

It's about neutral colors, sweaters with shape but not cling, crisp white shirts, and tailored pants or pencil skirts. When you've figured out a few of yours (Dresses with boots? Tailored jackets with jeans?), bring a critical eye to these favorites and make sure they fit as well as they can. (Get a friend to give input). Then, look for similar shapes or get a tailor to make copies. It's the best investment you can make. And suddenly, you have the core of a wardrobe that works.

2. Personality

Great personal style synchs up with your persona rather than fights it. I am petite and quite modest, so I don't make outrageous statements with fashion or show off my body that much. I communicate my personality with small touches: a great shoe and a great bag. You might be the opposite. Think about the woman you are and consider if your clothes tell that story.

3. Consistency

Some style icons often used just a few pieces over and over (think Jackie O's trench coat, sunglasses, and beautifully fitted T-shirts with slim pants). Stick with a focused selection of clothes that look and feel great, experiment with accessories for fun, and refine the fit, color, and texture from season to season. Not only is this cheaper than buying a whole new wardrobe each spring, it's much more genuine. It's about telling the world who you are, rather than letting fashion dictate to you.

What do you think makes for memorable personal style? I'd love to hear.

Inspiration & Hope / what do u do when u are lonely?
November 12, 2007, 08:27:44 PM
Here are some Coping Strategies, u can share yours...

Active Solitude
This first type of coping is called active solitude.  What this means is that when you feel lonely you have a tendency to engage yourself in active behaviors, like writing or reading, etc.  These kinds of behaviors are generally believed to be healthy behaviors, since they tend to pull your mind away from the loneliness and direct your energies to something positive or creative.  It is also generally believed that people who engage in active solitude tend to be individuals who suffer more from state loneliness than trait loneliness.  That means that you are probably lonely because of some situation you presently find yourself in (like moving to a new area) and if the situation were to change you would probably feel a lot better.  Your friends probably won't describe you as a very lonely person.  Therefore active solitude is a good way in trying to deal with loneliness, especially if it is a situation  you can't escape.

Spending Money
The second type of coping is called spending money.  In general, it is thought that spending money can have some beneficial effects, because it gets you out of the house (assuming that you shop offline, in malls and shops) and meeting new people.  But if your spending money doesn't cause you to get out the house and meet new people, then it probably isn't such of a good thing.  The researchers studying this type of coping were a bit ambivalent as to whether this is a good or bad coping strategy.  In any case, if you are spending money you don't have for things that you don't need, then this type of reaction to loneliness can prove to be extremely unhealthy.  You should consider buying things that will cause you to be social with other people.  The important thing is, when you feel lonely, get up, get out the house, got out to the malls, see what they have, and just look around without spending too much.  Perhaps you can leave your credit cards and money at home, so that you will be forced not to spend anything.  And carry a friend with you and see the sites together.

Social Contact
This third type of coping to loneliness is called social contact.  In general, it entails trying to call a friend, going to visit someone or trying to establish some kind of social contact when you have feelings of loneliness.  The researchers thought that social contact may be a good way of dealing with loneliness.  In general though, you should not be burdening your friends with constant calls for social contact.  But if you have friends to talk to, and yet you still feel lonely, you should stop and ask yourself, why?  Maybe the relationships you have aren't as fulfilling as you'd like them to be.  Maybe you need to go out there and make some new friends who can satisfy the need for a deeper relationship.  Maybe you should take one of your present relationships to a deeper level.  Something to think about.

Sad Passivity
Out of all the types of coping strategies to loneliness, this is the most looked down upon.  But don't despair.  Sad passivity means that you are involving yourself in types of behaviors that amplify your loneliness instead of relieving it.  These behaviors include such things as watching TV, sleeping, eating, taking tranquilizers (or alcohol, etc), sitting and thinking and doing nothing.  By engaging in these types of behaviors it only makes your situation worse, and the loneliness only pains you more sometimes.  But you probably feel powerless to do anything to change your situation.  You have to make a conscious decision to stop this sad passivity and move onto something more positive.  Take it one step at a time, find a new hobby, go out and join a new club, pick up exercising, find something useful to do with your time, something that will make you a better person.  Find someone to talk to about your loneliness.  It's okay to feel lonely, but it's not okay to keep feeling lonely all the time.

It's time to move up and move on!

Coping With Loneliness
by Cathleen Henning Fenton

Accepting it and moving on when the time is right
Loneliness may be painful and even frightening, and it may indicate a need for introspection. Have you been feeling lonely for a long time? Perhaps it's time to make some changes; it is possible to feel less alone. Loneliness is not a sign that you have failed or that you will never have people in your life. It may take effort to change the way you feel, but you can do it. Here are several suggestions for learning about your loneliness:

1. Accept it.

There are many steps you may take to help yourself feel less alone, but before you take those steps, stop and think about how you are feeling. Loneliness is an emotion, and, as with other uncomfortable emotions, we often want to get rid of it as soon as possible. Sometimes, though, these kinds of emotions may be learning tools.

Before rushing to eliminate loneliness, think about how you came to feel this way. Changes are most likely in order, but think about the changes that will suit your individual needs.
Sometimes, too, no change will eliminate loneliness. People may feel lonely even when surrounded by loving friends and family. Time may be the only solution. You are not flawed for feeling lonely, and, if you accept the feeling, you will find that it is not as uncomfortable as you first thought.

Remember, too, that being alone and feeling lonely are not the same. If you are alone these days but enjoying it, then don't feel as if you must change because other people don't understand. Do, however, be sure that you have a support system and that you are available to friends and family.

2. Reach out.

If you had people to contact, you may be thinking, then you wouldn't be lonely. Sometimes, though, when we are immersed in loneliness, we may forget about all of our options.

First, think about everyone you know and have ever known. Maybe you think a certain friend or relative wouldn't want to hear from you. Think again -- you may be surprised. Try contacting them and see what happens next. Be sure, however, to have a list of possible contacts, just in case the first doesn't go as planned. Think of old friends, too. You don't even have to tell them you're contacting them because you're lonely. Just reach out and communicate, and you'll start to feel better.

Second, if you truly believe friends and family aren't an option, then reach out to people you don't know. You're already on the Internet, and your options here are endless -- from chat rooms to forums to games to pen pals.

3. Help someone else.

A great way to spend time with people and feel good about your contribution to the world is by volunteering. If your anxiety disorder is keeping you from volunteering in a traditional way, use your imagination. Even going to an online forum and giving support to someone else who is lonely is a significant way to help. If you are ready to volunteer outside your home, look to places that will be anxiety-friendly: churches, hospitals, daycare or pre-schools, and nursing homes, are some examples.

4. Pursue your interests.

Meet people who like to do what you like to do by becoming involved in your hobbies and interests. If you already have a hobby that tends to be solitary, such as needlework, look for local classes or groups where you may meet other people as well as learn more about your craft. If you've thought about an interest for a long time but have never followed through, consider starting now. Look at your local newspaper for classes, groups and meetings, if you need ideas. Take a nature walk. Attend a lecture at a local museum. Take a cooking class. If you're not sure what your interests are, just start participating until you find what you love.

5. Join -- or start -- a support group.

Look around for an anxiety disorder support group. Ask your therapist, check the local newspaper, and contact local hospitals. If there aren't any for anxiety, try a depression or 12-step group. Consider starting your own support group if you can't find one; you'll be helping yourself and other people. If you need a place to have meetings, contact local churches which often have space.

If you're not sure how to cope with your loneliness and you feel that it's making you depressed, talk to your therapist about it (or get a therapist if you don't have one). Talking about it may help you explore other issues or come up with unique ways to cope with your individual feelings.

Fashion Trend / Skin Care from your Kitchen

Homemade skin care products
Loot your kitchen for great natural skin care products
Author: Charlotte Kuchinsky

Lots of women have problem skin. Sometimes it is too oily. Sometimes it is too dry. Some skin is blotchy and other skin is ruddy. Very few of us are lucky enough to have that perfect peaches-and-cream complexion that we all long for. To make up for all of our flaws, we buy every skin care product that we can find, hoping that something will work that perfect miracle. However, the truth is that expensive skin care products aren’t always the answer. Sometimes, the simple ones made right in our kitchen are just as good, if not better.

Avocado is a natural skin firmer. It works particularly well on the neck area. Mashed avocado, mixed with a little lemon juice, can be applied directly to the face and/or neck. While it firms, it also moisturizes with its enriched vitamins. Additionally, the oil in avocado dissolves the fat and dirt that so often clogs pores.

Baby wipes are perfect for removing makeup or just for cleansing the facial area. As a bonus, they are a lot cheaper than the expensive make-up removal pads found on the market today.

Baking soda naturally exfoliates the skin, while softening it as well. To exfoliate, mix a small amount of moisturizing cleanser into the baking soda to make a paste. Apply to the skin using the appropriate pressure for the area of the body where it is being used. Then rinse and apply your regular moisturizer. Baking soda, mixed with lemon juice, also makes natural toothpaste that will leave your teeth looking oh so white and bright.

Coffee grounds can help you rub away that unsightly cellulite. Instead of throwing away those used coffee grounds, rub them into your hips, thighs, or bottom. For extra benefit, wrap the area with plastic wrap and wait for at least 15 minutes. Take a shower and enjoy your soft, beautiful skin.

Cucumber slices, as everyone knows, can help to get rid of the dark circles in the under eye area. Pears also work in basically the same way.

Egg whites deliver an instant facelift. Just apply the whites directly to wrinkles and remain perfectly still until they dry. Once dry, apply your regular make-up and you’re all set to go. Another option is to mix eggs, honey, and lemon juice together for a facial mask. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse and apply your usual moisturizer.

Eye drops with anti-reddening properties can be applied to pimples during the day to help disguise them. They take away the red blotchiness, making pimples easy to cover. Once the eye drops dry, just apply your make-up on top and off you go.

Haemorrhoid cream has long been the secret of the stars for curing unsightly under-eye puffiness caused by lack of sleep. After it is dry, all that is left is to apply your makeup.

Honey is often used in skin care products because it contains vitamins and natural moisturizers. It also has a natural antibiotic that will kill bacteria as it cleans out your pores. Mix it with brown sugar and olive oil and you have the perfect skin exfoliant. It may be a bit abrasive for those with extremely sensitive skin so be very gentle in the application process. On the other hand, it is perfect for those rough, dry elbows, knees, and feet. Just apply wherever it is needed, leave for ten minutes or longer and rinse off with warm water.

Honey mixed with lemon juice, and heated for about 30 minutes and then cooled to room temperature makes a wonderful hair remover. Spread it on in a thin layer wherever you want to remove hair; apply a wax strip over it and then pull off quickly. Off will come the unwanted hair and you can get in some much needed scream therapy at the same time.

Lemon juice, mixed with a little bit of water, also makes a wonderful refreshing facial toner. Just dab it on with a cotton ball and let it dry before putting on moisturizer.

Milk has long been thought to make skin soft and smooth because it eliminates dead skin cells naturally. Cleopatra was famous for her luxurious milk baths, and she was considered one of the most striking women of her time.

Milk of Magnesia is great for removing excess oil from facial skin. Apply it just like a mask and let it dry. Then rinse with warm water before applying make-up.

Mint can be used as a skin pick-me-up. Put a few crushed sprigs of mint into crushed ice and smooth across the face. Pat dry and enjoy newly revitalized skin.

Miracle Whip is an excellent exfoliant. Apply a thin layer over the face and let it sit for at least ten minutes. Massage the skin gently to remove dead skin cells, rinse, and moisturize.

Oatmeal, mixed with sugar and avocado, makes a facial scrub that is perfect for sensitive skin. Apply it in a light massaging motion. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then remove it with warm water before applying your moisturizer. Because it is naturally abrasive, oatmeal in the bath water can also help to moisturize and soften the skin while removing dead skin cells.

Olive oil is a rich moisturizer that doesn’t irritate the skin. It is perfect for the thicker, rough, and often dry skin of the elbows, knees, and heels. Women with excessively dry skin often use olive oil all over their body, either alone or mixed with other homemade beauty products to further improve their results. Warmed slightly, it makes a deep penetrating moisturizing mask. To really soften your hands or feet, apply olive oil to dry skin and then cover the area over night with socks. You will wake up in the morning with softer, smoother skin.

Papaya is rich in protein and contains an enzyme that promotes the discarding of dead skin, making it the perfect fruit for a facial mask. Smooth the pulp of a papaya over the face. Let it sit for five to ten minutes and then wipe off with a warm cloth. Pat cool water onto the face to close the pores. Once dry, follow up with your daily moisturizer.

Peaches are rich in vitamin A and B and contain a lot of water. Make a soothing skin conditioner by blending mashed peaches with heavy whipping cream. Rub into the skin as needed. Let sit for ten to twenty minutes and then rinse with warm water.

Pepto-Bismol isn’t only good for your stomach. It also makes an amazing face-tightening mask. Apply it liberally just like any other facial mask. Let it dry and then remove it with warm water.

Pumpkin is a wonderful skin conditioner. This Halloween, when you carve that Jack-O-Lantern, save the leftover pumpkin to make a paste for a very special body facial that will leave your skin soft, smooth, and looking years younger.

Strawberries, according to some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, have a natural polishing effect on teeth, while also leaving them brighter than ever before.

Toothpaste will work in a pinch when pimples pop out of nowhere and there’s not Clearasil in the house. Just dab it on at bedtime and wake up with picture-perfect skin in the morning.

Vegetable shortening works well for those suffering from eczema. Just put it on where the skin is infected and let it sit for at least 15 minutes. Then rinse or shower to remove it and follow up with your moisturizer.

Vinegar, mixed with water and witch hazel, makes a gentle facial toner.

Yeast improves blood flow and circulation and is very rich in B complex vitamins. To make the perfect facial mask, mix it with a few teaspoons of warm water. Smooth the mixture over the face, allowing it to dry. Then rinse with warm water. Be sure it is thoroughly dry before apply moisturizer or make-up.

Yoghurt softens the skin while also soothing the redness caused by rosacea. Additionally, it tightens pores while it cleans. Apply it just like a mask and leave it on the face for at least ten minutes. Rinse off with warm water and apply your moisturizer. Yogurt can also soothe painful sunburn, while it prevents blistering. Slather it on liberally and relax.

So when you can’t afford those highly touted skin care products that everyone else is using, try making your own. You just might find that they are better, while saving you tons of money!

Simple weight loss tips
Start on the road to weight loss with these simple tips
Author: Damien Gregory

The fact is we live in a world where we are bombarded by advertising for mega-burger deals and chocolate bars. We see world class sports stars promoting the virtues of high fat & sugar products, and at some level in our sub-conscious we associate their magnificent physiques with those products. Well you have to have the discipline to ignore this temptation. Easy to say, not so easy to do, perhaps. Well here are a couple of tips that may help:

Planning your eating
The first step to getting any behaviour under control is to understand the truth about it. Write down what you eat, and when. Plan your meals to ensure a good, healthy start to the day, and consider keeping a 'food diary' to keep on top of your real intake.

Drinking water
Drink water, lots of it - at least 1-2 litres per day. As well as being healthy in itself this will fill your stomach and reduce your appetite.

Engage in regular activity
This could be anything from regular walks to gardening. Two half-hour walks a day burn at least 300 â€" 500 calories a day. Find something fun; bike riding, roller-blading, whatever it is, just do it!

Keep an eye on sugar levels
The Glycemic Index is becoming more and more recognised as a crucial health measure in our food. A food rated above 85 is high, below 60 low, and in-between is moderate. Low glycemic diets are healthy and excellent for weight loss - give you a slow release of carbs, meaning you don’t feel hungry. In practice this could mean, for example, a breakfast of oats or muesli with a glass of orange juice, giving your all the energy you need before lunch time.

Try out these tips for just a few weeks, and you'll notice the effect. And if you just do one, do the easiest - drink water, lots of it, and often. There's no simpler way to make a difference to your weight.

Fashion Trend / Best Haircut for Your Face

How to get the best haircut for your face shape
Choose the hairstyle that matches your face
Author: Jenny Andrews

Have you ever gone to the salon, hairstyle magazine in hand, hoping to have your locks transformed into the latest trend featured on the front page only to have your stylist tell you that you do not have the right shaped face to wear the style, or, worse yet, your stylist puts that exact haircut on you, but you look nothing like the model wearing the cut in the magazine?

We’ve all had horrible experiences in the stylist chair. Most of the time they are not technical errors, but errors when it comes to choosing the right style to compliment our facial structure and build.

When choosing the perfect hairstyle for your unique look, stylists should take into account your build. For example, close cropped styles would not suit a person with a large frame, nor would a full-bodied style compliment a person with a small frame. Making sure that your style and frame balance is the key here.

Stylists also should look at your face shape when choosing the best look for you.
There are five basic face shapes: oval, heart, round, square and triangular.

All of these shapes can be beautiful, but one is ideal: oval. No matter what shaped face you have, achieving the perfect look involves picking the right cut or style that will make your face appear more oval.

Oval face shapes are identified by the perfect symmetry of certain facial features, such as the distance from the hairline to the bridge of the nose (between the eyes), from the bridge of the nose to the lips, and from the lips to the bottom of the chin. If your face is oval shaped, you can consider yourself to be very lucky. This shape is the only one that is complimented by almost every hairstyle imaginable.

Heart shaped faces are usually broader through the forehead and taper to a point at the chin. You can make this shaped face appear more oval by positioning the weight of the haircut at chin level, or by wearing bangs in shorter styles. Keep in mind that the goal is to minimize the forehead and to bring prominence to the chin.

Round faces are just that: round. They have wide cheekbones and are usually smaller through the forehead and chin. The goal here is to minimize the cheekbones. Styles with height in the bang and sides cut toward the face usually work best.

Square faces have a bold forehead and an angular jaw line. Styles with soft edges, and a great deal of texture directed toward the face really suit this shape. The length should be kept longer than jaw length to draw attention away from the jaw, but, at the same time, that length should be layered. A straight, sleek style would only serve to accent the angular lines of the face.

Triangular shaped faces are angular at the jaw line, but narrow through the forehead. They can be treated much the same way that square faces are treated, with one exception; more height and fullness is needed throughout the crown and bang areas to make this section of the face appear larger.

Now that you know what your stylist knows, take this knowledge with you on your next salon visit. This time, when you thumb through the style books and magazines, you will be able to zero in on your perfect new cut. Good Luck!

Finding the right pair of jeans for you
How to choose the jeans that look right for your body type
Author: Charlotte Kuchinsky

General tips for choosing the best jean fit

If you throw up your hands in desperation because you just can’t figure out which body type you are, then try sticking to some general tips that should offer any figure a longer, leaner look:

1.  Choose stretch denim. Not only is it more comfortable, it is also more forgiving.
2.  When in doubt, opt for a relaxed fit, medium rise jean.
3.  Never choose jeans that are too bulky or baggy.
4.  It’s hard to go wrong with the standard five-pocket classic jean.
5.  Most women can wear boot cut and flared leg jeans because they make any figure look long and lean.
6.  Few women can wear the skinny jean or tapered cut well because they basically require the perfect body. If it’s a choice between jeans that are snug or those a little big, go for the snug. Denim relaxes as it is worn.
7.  Don’t choose jeans that are either too short or too long. The hem should cover most of your shoe.
8.  Darker denims make any body appear slimmer while excessively light denims can actually add bulk.
9.   Avoid focusing on “size” and pay attention to “fit.”
10. Be certain that back pockets don’t add ugly bulk or make the bottom look too large because of embellishment.
11. Just because everyone else is wearing embellishment doesn’t mean you have to if it doesn’t flatter your figure.
12. Make sure that “fades” accent your figure rather than working against it.
13. Take your body measurements with you on your search so sales clerks can help you locate the right fit.
14. Don’t get hung up on a designer label. Look for jeans that fit, even if that means a cheap pair of Levis.

Once you understand which cut and fit of jean best suits your body type, narrow down your choices that also suit your personal style. To make a statement with your jeans, they have to suit who you are as a person. That is almost as important as the fit itself.

Fashion Trend / Choosing the Right Perfume
October 30, 2007, 02:01:39 AM
Choosing the right perfume to suit your style and needs is challenging, but rewarding and fun. Your perfume is a way of expressing your personality. Like quality fashion accessories, good perfume adds a finishing touch to what you’re wearing.

It is easy to be persuaded by the extravagant advertisements of the perfume industry, but it is a mistake to decide what you want without first trying a perfume out properly. Remember that the description of a perfume in a magazine, no matter how persuasive, is only a description. Perfumes that contain quality ingredients are expensive and it is very important that when you wear your perfume you feel great.

The first step is to think about what kinds of smells you find most attractive. Do some research. Do you love the smell of a cake baking? There are a lot of perfumes these days based around the scent of vanilla. Are you a beach person who loves the smell of the ocean? The new oceanic fragrances might be right for you.

You may not think you want to smell like tea or fresh laundry but if you like these smells they may be a clue to the sort of perfume your looking for.

The six main categories of perfume are:

1. Floral - with flowers as the dominant theme, very feminine and romantic.

2. Fruity- spicy and fresh with fruits used as part of the formula

3. Oceanic â€" modern perfumes that use synthetic elements to smell strongly of the sea and it’s environs.

4. Greens- fresh energetic perfumes that remind you of the outdoors.

5. Orientals- sexy exotic and intense perfumes that smell of musk, vanilla, spices and opulent heavy flowers.

6. Woody-Perfume that smell like bark, moss and other things you might find in the forest.

Different perfumes are suitable for different occasions, and age groups. A green perfume is especially suitable for a young girl while an oriental may be too sophisticated for a teenager. Orientals are intense and tend to be more suited to eveningwear and special occasions while greens are more appropriate for casual wear. Lighter perfumes are refreshing during hot weather and heavier perfumes are comforting in the cooler months.

Once you have a good idea of what type of perfume you are after, you are ready to approach the shop counter and find a skillful salesperson to help you. Always try a perfume out on your skin, not on those little bits of cardboard the sales people are so ready to offer you. Perfume mixes with your own personal scent and smell and is different on different people, so never assume that a perfume that smells great on a friend will smell good on you.

Spray the perfume on the vein of your wrist where the skin is warm, as this will diffuse the scent. You can try out two perfumes, one on each wrist during one trip to the mall, but not more than two as your nose will start to get confused and you will end up smelling like a perfume factory.

Get into a habit of trying a new perfume each time you pass by your local duty-free shop, pharmacy or department store. This will help you in your quest to find the perfect perfume and give you a chance to enjoy each scent on it’s own merits.

Don’t sniff the perfume immediately after you spray it. If it has alcohol in it this will assault your senses. Wait a bit. Remember that most perfumes will go through three stages called the top, middle and base notes. You cannot judge a perfume simply on it’s top notes although this is what will make the first impression. For example, the oriental perfume Dioressence by Dior has top notes of clove, cinnamon and geranium then middle notes of patchouli and jasmine and ends with base notes of vanilla and tuberose with the smell of carnation present in all three layers.

Never rub perfume on your skin, as you will damage the delicate ingredients. Take your time and enjoy your search.

Home Remedies For Shiny Hair
By: Sharon Hopkins

We all love our hair and would not mind taking that extra step to take care of it. For beautiful, lustrous and shiny hair use these simple home remedies.

• A tea and beer rinse is one of the oldest ways to bring shine to your hair. Boil used tea leaves in enough water, let it cool and then use this liquid as the last rinse.

• In the similar fashion you can use flat beer (i.e. after letting the fizz out). This is a great conditioner to be used for your hair.

• Lemon juice mixed with water can also be used as a last rinse to give your hair a shiny and bouncy look.

• A shiny look is also provided if you use vinegar for your final rinse.

• To bring that shine one can use honey to keep your scalp moisturized. You can make honey lotion for your hair by mixing 3 teaspoons of honey for pint of water.

• The use of henna as a natural conditioner proves to be very beneficial for your hair. It helps to bring back the bounce and flair of your hair which has been lacking for quite a while.

• You can add small amount of baking soda in the shampoo which, removes dirt and grease from your hair to give you the shiny look.

• To remove the dirt and other matter from your hair you can use one fourth cup of apple cider vinegar in one gallon of condensed water. This can be stored in the refrigerator and can be used every two weeks for clean, smooth, silky and shiny hair. The proper way to use this solution is to wet your hair with warm water, shampoo it later rinse it. Pour two cups of this mixture and leave it in your hair for sometime. The last stage is to rinse your hair with cold-water.

• To get that extra shine for your hair brew one cup of strong espresso, let it cool. Pour the espresso over your dry hair and leave it for 20 minutes. Rinse it to get the extra shine and glow.

• You can also make Egg shampoo at home which requires 1 egg, 1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, 1 tablespoon castile soap, 1/2 a cup water or herbal tea and last but not the least 5 drops of essential oils of your choice. Blend all these together to make an Egg shampoo which can bring shine to your hair.

• Many of us who want to clean their hair use shampoos. Try this for a change, massage baking soda into your hair and scalp. This absorbs oil and loosens the dead skin on the scalp. Rinse it thoroughly with water. In the initial stages the hair would be dry but after several weeks you would be dandruff free with smooth and shiny hair.

Introduce Yourself / creepy!
September 02, 2007, 04:02:30 AM
i usually work at night and early hours in the morning. that's usually how artists' clock are ticking. my creativity peaks when darkness fall...kumbaga night owl. i was painting my soon to be cybercafe when someone just peeped on my window jalousy. i saw his face stuck close to the glass. what was that guy doing in my window around 2 AM?  He seem to be checking out what's inside the house or was he planning a scheme? Maybe he thought everyone was sleeping. After hearing all the stories about robbery and stuff, that got to my nerves. it was really creepy having been faced to faced with a stranger with just a piece of glass in between. im just letting all of u know just in case anything happens to me if that guy's brain turns nuts.
