My lola used to scare me with the "tirong" too. Wala pud ko kasabot kung unsa nang tirong.

I have lots of precious childhood memories of Bohol:

--maligo sa sandayong kung mag uwan
--mo absent sa school kay mokatkat sa quarry-han
--mo adto sa Sagbayan Sur kay mangita ug kaka (I had an awesome kaka collection)
--mo katkat sa punuan sa mangga near my great grandma's house, with my cousins
--manguha ug Lirio sa garden sa akong great grandma para dad-on sa Flores de Mayo
--going to my lola's farm house in Kandugtong to eat the utot-utot and feed the chickens

Oh! How I love my childhood/summer days in my grandparents bukid in Dimiao.

1.  Mo mata ug sayo kay mo kuyog ni Lolo mamalhin sa kabaw or mo linya sa tanke aron maka ligo sa bugnaaaaaw kaayo nga tubig.
2.  Mo padanas sa bukid gamit ang gunit or palwa sa lubi...( I remember it now every time we go sledding during winter)
3.  Mo adto sa payag sa akong uncle kay manguha ug kamote unya mag sugba ug manok.
4.  Mo lingkod sa lantay puno-an sa balite inig ka hapon while ga tan-aw sa mga kwaknit nga nanguli padung sa langob.
5.  Mag tan-aw sa aninipot inig kagabii....

hay! daghan pa kaayong memories....

I sat on a rock by a beach in Anda naghulat naay motohil sa paon sa akong pasol.

I remember I sat one whole morning until midday, isa ra gyud ka isda ang mikubit sa akong pasol. The fish was called "tagibunbon."

Labihan na kong lipaya.

Pag-uli na ko sa balay I gave the fish to Mama, saying: "Ma, inig-maluto na ang isda, ituwa nalang ni nato ni Venus." Venus was our home dog.

"Tan-awa nang imong panit, napagtong na ka ug sige ug pamasol, unya usa ra ka isda imong kuha, unya imo pa gyung ipakaon sa iro," said my mother. By the way, Mama doesn't use "j" when she talks since she is from Zamboanga del Sur.

What follows is basically what I have gathered from reading some historical essays of the late Prof. William Henry Scott on the pre-Hispanic Filipino.

"Ilawg ka sa tirong" is a reference that goes back to the culture of mutual inter-island payao raids that was pervading in the pre-Hispanic Philippine archipelago, although it was still true during Spanish colonial times.  Which is why the "moros" have been singled out.  It should be noted that our forefathers conducted these raids for many reasons: making war, taking slaves, pillaging and looting villages, taking revenge, and even to forcibly take wives.

The hatches in which they kept their captives were called "tirong."  And, thus, "ilawg ka sa tirong" could basically mean that one will be captured by the raiders and imprisoned in a "tirong."  However, a people that settled in the islands of Leyte and Samar were once referred as "tirones" and, alternatively, the term "tirong" could refer to them.

Mine are pretty much same as Happy, I just would like to add more:
- riding bicycles with my foreigner friend Melissa around City Engineering and dao
- teacher - student game with matching blackboard, lots of chalks, eraser, long stick, lesson plan and Class record,
- went to Doljo beach or Caingit every Sunday as our swimming day
- my friends and I walked to St.Joseph church from Arpels along J.A.Clarin and back home every Christmas Eve and New year's eve
- on my birthday I invited all my friends for an ice cream party
- then during school break I regularly visited my grandparents either Sagbayan or Alicia. In Sagbayan, during full moon we played "gym-gym (SP?)" along the highway. And also "bayle" to any barrio nearby, so much fun!
- and lastly the one I hate to remember was my mother beat me from head to toe and when she calmed down, she made up for it by being soo nice to me giving me treats. And also she tied me up in my bedroom. All because she didn't want me to go out of the house with my friends for a long period of time (laagan man gud, dah merise!).

1. The drive to Panglao beach with my grandma, my sister, my uncles and aunts--and remember seeing food in pots. And all of us eating in the benches in the beach with the thatched roofs on top, hahaha. Afterwards, I would remember going to the beach with my cousin and sister collecting starfishes.

2. Driving to Valencia from Tagbilaran to visit my Lolo Ciano and my Lola Nating. Then Lolo would take all of us to his basaks and I would remember wearing boots just to cross and walk in the basak. So green. So vast. Lolo always made sure all of us wore the rice hats kai init kaayo sa basak during the day time. I always wanted to join the farmers in their planting of the rice, but Lolo told me not to. Jati! haha

3. Bajang Springs. I remember being a small kid and just diving into the large pool in Bajang. Off the side tho, I remember Lolo telling me that the cliff just above Bajang was an area were the Japanese soldiers forced the Filipino guerillas that were captured and American men of the cliff. Ingoon kono si Lolo ug si Lola daghaan pood ang intchik tawo sa una gi patay didto kai naa bitaw conlict ang hapon sa intsik sa guera nila. Mao na ang Lola nako (she was chinese) and her mother and father moved to the bukid during the war to escape the Japanese for surely they would have killed them had they known they were Chinese. {history side note}

4. Sugal-Sugal. My Lolo used to play cock fighting sa una. Ning adto pood ko sa una mo tan-aw. Good times. Best time was when he wins and takes home the loser's chicken and cooks it ;)

haha!
