Defeated mayoralty bet, City Vice Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso filed an electoral protest at the Commission on Elections in Manila versus re-elected Mayor Dan N. Lim after claiming that there were irregularities in the May 10 polls.
Veloso who ran under Lakas-Kampi-CMD said that had there not been any anomalies in the elections, he would have garnered more votes and won.
In the Comelec tally, Lim garnered 24,061 votes while Veloso tallied 15,726 votes giving the re-electionist mayor a commanding lead. He won in all the 15 barangays (giving no single barangay for Veloso) to show his supremacy during the first automated elections.
The electoral protest filed at the poll body petitioned that the ballots in the city's 58 precincts be recounted amid circumstances that give suspicion of pre-programmed flash cards.
The vice-mayor alleged that disenfranchisement occurred as some of his supporters were unable to vote when their ballots were intentionally damaged by known allies of the mayor, resulting to their rejection by the PCOS machines.
Former Gov. Rolando Butalid who cast his vote at Precinct No. 2-A was not spared from the "operations" as his ballot, after he cast his vote, was deliberately tampered by a poll-watcher.
"After operating the PCOS, the operator told me my vote was invalid since there were marks in the ballot. I did not mark them but the last person who handled it was a woman he identified as Lorna Tajer who I later knew was a poll-watcher of Lim," the former governor said.
