On this day, 500 years ago, Rajah Humabon of Cebu and his court met the emissaries of Ferdinand Magellan (which included Enrique, the Asian translator of the latter). This, after Humabon--the most influential ruler in the region--permitted not Magellan and his crew to land in Cebu the day before. One must recall that Magellan, upon arriving in Cebu port, had nothing to present as tribute to the rajah. The rajah was neither impressed nor shaken by the braggadocio of Magellan that the latter was sent by the most powerful king on earth.
The emissaries told Humabon that Magellan "wished only to trade with him and with no others," said Antonio Pigafetta, chronicler of the Magellan-Elcano expedition. They also heeded the conditions set by the rajah: that Magellan must enter into blood compact (kasi-kasi) with him, if he was sincere in building friendship (thus, waving the tribute collection), and present tokens of friendship.
Magellan and the rest of the first circumnavigators were still not allowed to land in Cebu until the conditions had been met. Despite this, Humabon was still generous for sending food and drinks to the foreigners since their arrival. Diplomacy-like customs in Cebu were observed, thus, taking the personal meeting of Humabon and Magellan several days more.
