April 1 2021: On this day, 500 years ago, siblings Rajah Colambu of Limasawa and Rajah Siaui of Butuan-Calaghan received from Magellan Christian symbols like a large wooden cross, nails, and a crown. This after an Easter Sunday Mass was held in the morning at Limasawa. Enrique, the Asian interpreter of Magellan, told the rulers that these were given to Magellan by Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire (concurrently King of Spain) with an instruction "he (Magellan) might set up those his (Charles) tokens... wherever he might." The rajahs approved the request of Magellan to allow the latter to set up the said cross on the summit of the highest point in Limasawa to serve as a landmark for the Spaniards and to spare the place from thunder, lightning, and storms. They joined Magellan to the summit. Upon asking their religion, they told Magellan that they were not Muslims but believers of this supreme being they called Abba. They also told the captain-general that they could load provisions at the ports of Leyte, Caraga, and Cebu, and recommended the latter because of vibrant trade.
This was the third time the first circumnavigators planted a cross. The first ones were in South America to serve as markers.
