Every June 29 is commemorated as the foundation of Cagayan as a Spanish province in 1583. However, it supposedly endured a "Japanese pirate invasion" just a year earlier, in 1582. Such was the legendary imprint of the event that it was at times hailed as the "first recorded military encounter" between standard European forces and Japanese samurai.
