The July 22, 2007 editorial by the theboholstandard.com

Today is the climax of the month-long Sandugo celebration in the province of Bohol . Fittingly coinciding with the observance of the Bohol foundation day, this is expected to be a day of revelry and fun.

The observance comes at a time when there are few reasons to celebrate in other fronts. Notwithstanding claims to the contrary by administration spin masters, there is little doubt about the economic crisis that beset the nation.

Long queues line up at the United States embassy as foreign contract workers wannabe try their luck in what is perceived as the most affluent nation on earth. The long lines negate whatever hopes of a brighter future in this country.

Otherwise, why flee if there is still reason to expect a brighter future here?

That is precisely the point – there is not much hope that we have seen the light at the end of the tunnel. On the contrary, there is more reason to fear that the worst is yet to come.

It is not difficult to understand why people are so pessimistic. While Filipinos are known for their resiliency, there are few signs that things will improve. Not in the near future. Certainly, not now.

Take the case of Bohol . Despite the much-ballyhooed claims of mega-projects being poured into the province, only the politicians who benefit from them have reasons to be optimistic.

Whatever hopes of the agricultural sector turning things around have since vanished. At the rate the dam projects are being devastated by controversies, farmers will just have to look up to the sky for rain as they have done in old times.

Indeed, the National Irrigation Administration seems to have perfected the art of how not to complete a dam in Bohol . The experts and managers have all the arguments to their side, but the dams remain nothing but empty boasts.

Except for tourism, there is no other bright spot in Bohol . Little wonder that more and more Boholanos have resigned themselves to the fact that the only way out of poverty is to either to send a family member abroad or migrate altogether.

In this light we look to the Sandugo celebration as a welcome respite from life’s vicissitudes that is fast closing in on us. It is simply a matter of perspective.

No matter how we look at it, the Sandugo celebration is nothing more than entertainment. Some people begrudge the organizers for that but there is little point in complaining.

If we cannot do much about our present situation, we might as well laugh as hard and as loud as we can.
