Karatedo Championship in Davao City

The Philippine National Karatedo Association, Inc. (PNKAI) will stage the “Pahalipay sa Pasko ni Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio” on December 12,(Sunday) from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the NCCC Mall, this city.

PNKAI President Ricardo M. Tacay said the event billed as the “2010 Mindanao Inter-school Karatedo Open Championship”, is in coordination with the City Government of Davao and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Tacay said this prestigious combat sport event, which will be participated by school children and adults (male and female) from various places in the country, aims at boosting the Davao City Christmas celebration, promote peace and tourism industry through sports and to develop discipline, fitness and character among school students, to keep them away from drugs and juvenile delinquency.

Tacay said invited to vie for honors in the men’s seniors open are the Philippine Air Force Karatedo Team of Villamor Air Base, Pasay City; Philippine Army’s 4th Infanry Division (ID); Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF-X), Cagayan de Oro City; Philippine Karatedo League (Shito-ryu), Sta. Rosa City; Misamis Oriental Karatedo Association (MOKA); Philippine Okinawa Shorin-ryu Karatedo Association. (PSKA), Tagum City; Agusan del Sur Provincial Karatedo Team; Region 12 Karatedo Federation; and host Philippine Shotokan Karatedo Association International, Davao City.

Meanwhile, Tacay requested academes to compete in the inter-school category, like University of Mindanao (UM), Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC), Ateneo de Davao University ADDU), University of the Immaculate Concepcion (UIC), Assumption College of Davao (ACD), Good Soil Academy, Values School, Indonesian School of Davao City, St. Xavier University, Southern Philippines College, Corpus Christi School and Cagayan de Oro University, Misamis Oriental Institute of Science & Technology, Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, Notre Dame of Tacurong and Cotabato Foundation Colleges of Science & Technology.

Tacay said the World Karate Federation (WKF) rules will be implemented to insure safety and protection of the contestants. It will be officiated by ex-national PKF champions and now veteran referees Shihan Bern Rexander Tacay of PSKAI Davao City; Shihan Dennis Aquino of Philippine Karatedo League (PKL) (Shito-ryu), Sta. Rosa City; and Shihan Dino Asinero of Modern Martial Arts Association, Misamis Oriental.

The judges are Senseis Cesar Racoma and Gerson Labininay of Cagayan de Oro City, Wilfredo Martinez of General Santos City, Rene Rosales and Reynold Alejo of North Cotabato, Anecito Dumat Sr. of Tagum City , Ben Genon of Agusan del Sur and Renshi Mila Romaquin of Davao City, he said.

On the other hand, Tacay urged karatedo athletes from various schools and clubs to participate in this government-sanctioned sport event.

“This is where athletes are more protected and the sport of karatedo is properly regulated,” he said.

Registration, weigh-in and checking of school credential and birth certificates of athletes as required will be conducted at the PNKAI/PSKAI headquarters on December 11, Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will be followed by orientation of WKF tourney rules.

Tacay said side from 18 custom-made trophies and cash awards for 25 individual champions and honorarium for game officials donated by Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

There will be 72 pieces gold, silver and bronze medals to be awarded to the winners by Chairman Ricardo “Ritchie” Garcia of PSC, he added. (PNA)
