LAOAG CITY -- Local officials and residents of the Tingguian community of Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte, about 38 kilometers from here, have complained that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and a contractor have not finished the construction of a bridge that was supposed to have been completed last year.

Nueva Era town Mayor Aldrin Garvida said over the weekend that the delayed construction of the PHP250-million worth Bonggo Bridge connecting Nueva Era and Banna towns has been causing great inconvenience to commuters for over a year now since 2015.

He said almost a year had passed since its supposed completion date in time for the town’s centennial celebration but up to this day the project is still half done.

Garvida sought the help of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to expedite the Bonggo Bridge construction when Vice Governor Eugenio Angelo Marcos Barba and the provincial board members conducted an out of capitol session in Nueva Era town.

He also lamented that during the construction process of the project, the contractor made some changes from the original design.

In response, Barba assured the people of Nueva Era that he would look into the matter.

Lawyer Vicentito Lazo, who is also provincial board member,  said they would summon the contractor and the DPWH-Regional Office to explain why the target completion of the Bonggo Bridge was not met.

Ilocos Norte board members have been going out of Capitol to reach out to the people in various towns of Ilocos Norte so they could personally listen to their concerns and grievances.

Apart from the Nueva Era bridge, the completion of other bridge projects in various parts of Ilocos Norte are also delayed such as those in Batac City, Currimao, Pasuquin and Pagudpud.

Commuters are made to endure heavy traffic using detour roads as they could hardly pass through the major thouroughfares during heavy rains. (PNA)
