LAOAG CITY -- Following the increasing number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) cases in Ilocos Norte, a team from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) is reaching out to the grassroots levels to ensure everybody is well-informed to help prevent the spread of the disease.
Unlike other viruses, the HIV lives inside the body of a human forever. If left untreated, this leads to the disease called AIDS, said health experts.
Dr. Josephine Ruedas, Officer-in-Charge of the Provincial Health Office, said Tuesday the promotion of awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention is among the top priority programs of the Department of Health (DOH) as cases of the disease continue to rise.
In Region 1, data from the DOH shows there are 139 HIV cases covering the four provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
Health experts said HIV/AIDS is acquired through unprotected sex particularly with same sex partners.
In Laoag City, several hospitals here are offering HIV/AIDS test. These are the Gov. Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital, Carmeli Hospital and Laoag City General Hospital. The Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center also offers the same in Batac City. (Leilanie G. Adriano/PNA)
