Boracay environment enhancement program crafted

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Aug. 11 -- The Local Government Unit of Malay has crafted a new project to provide solutions to the development challenges faced by the island.

Dubbed as Boracay Environment Enhancement Program or BEEP, the project will be implemented with a funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), according to Alma Belejerdo, Malay municipal development planning coordinator.

Belejerdo, in an interview on Friday, said solid waste management and flood control programs will be the core of the BEEP project.

BEEP was conceptualized after Malay was chosen as one of the recipient LGUs for ADB’s Solid Waste Management Sector project. Other recipients of the project are the LGUs of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte; La Trinidad, Benguet and Janiuay, Iloilo.

Belejerdo said BEEP will include the enhancement of Boracay’s material recovery facilities, acquisition of waste handling equipment as well as the adoption and establishment of waste-to-energy technologies.

Procurement of some waste handling equipment is already underway, Belejerdo said.

Meanwhile, Mayor Ceciron Cawaling said BEEP, which symbolizes the sound of jeepney horn aims “to awaken everyone to do their part in the protection of the island.”

Cawaling said the project is eyed to become an “inclusive long term solution” to the current problem faced by the island and Malay in general.

“We need to address the menace of this island and the mainland for us to become a resilient community,” he said. (Karen Bermejo/PNA)
