Fresh humay from Valencia is one of the best. [/i]

I exceptionally enjoyed being with the farmers, only because i used to plant rice with my grandfather and my grand-uncles when i was younger. So the memory of being there was richly ingrained in my mind, and being there walking there was enjoyable. Talking to the farmers, and listening to them. At the time I visited, there was a dry season (early july) but by the second time i visited (late july), the rains had come and had filled our rice land with life-giving rain. It was amazing seeing everyone planting the rice, and the stories being overheard. I did not even know those people but they knew me, my lolo, and my parents. And how their grand parents knew my lolo's grand parents etc. Humbling experience.

Many times they would tell me not to plant rice kai 'luoy pood ka sir', ingoon pood ko balik, 'dili oy, kamo may luoy kalingaw mo trabajo sa basak nga init kaajo. mo testing lang gud ko unsa man ning kinabuhi sa basak...' katawa sila , katawa pood ko. so i experienced life as a basak farmer for that short time. working with our caretakers. :)

I loved it there.

hmmm... mingawon man pud ta ani sa kabasakan... So you have smelled the fresh grass leaves then... kakaiba ija smell... labi na pag e-mowed... hehehe... I like its scent  :)

Yes, yes and yes! I love the smell. I love the smell of freshly picked humay. I love the feel of walking in the basak, talking to the caretakers, and just overseeing the work. There is an unexplainable sense of contentedness in farming. It's just a natural feeling.

The smell of the fresh air in Valencia and the cool breeze when i drove up to barangay anas , barangay manga. Its truly different from the hot smog and the smell of polluted air in Tagbilaran.

And the countless times I've sat on the banks of Valencia to witness the picturesque sunsets...
mingawon...

hehehe, i always look back to Valencia, Belle. Its amazing that despite growing up here in the 'states, americanized completely, yet i identify myself as Valencianon first and foremost. lol!

I am naturally drawn to the beauty there. The people, my family, farm, and just the natural beauty...

I always think of my lolo who is waiting for me there; and the many family members and the family friends.

 :-[

speaking of lolo, his 84th birthday was on the 26th of October.
I called him to greet him. Ingon sija dayon, "oy si ondoy bran bran" hahaha.
the sound of his voice was strong enough to command my tears to fall...  :P

I wish i was there to have celebrated his 84th birthday with the rest of our family.

here's what a hacienda is, for me:

1)  10 square kilometers, like that of the chiongbians (shipping magnate) in asturias, cebu.  they bought it from serging osmena junior.  been there.  the owner bought pigs from england for breeding.  they had hundreds of pigs in many buildings.  wherever one looked were endless plots of various veggies.  their swimming pool, though, was unused by humans.  it had hundreds of turtles.  for human consumption.  as i had a pet turtle then, i swore i won't go back to that place for whatever reason.

2)  in negros occidental, where haciendas end at the blue horizon.  within the hacienda is a sugar refinery, like that of jose mari chan's family.  i've passed this singer's family's hacienda many times.  i've never been inside.

of course, the hacienda of nanding cojuangco (he has one, in negros) has 3 thousand topgrade fighting cocks at any one time, at an average cost of 25k pesos each more than 15 years ago.  i haven't seen this hacienda.  i just heard about it as part of the local lore.

OT:  at that time i acquired six eggs, supposedly from cojuangco's breed of fighting cocks, and had these eggs hatched with the help of a bulb in a box at our living room.  they turned out to be very beautiful fighting cocks, which i kept as pets, what else.  too bad when new years came they got crazy with all the fireworks, i had to bring them to the bedroom for protection.  and i stopped eating chicken and eggs.  something's gotta give.  i gave them away to someone who knows about fighting cocks and who considered himself the luckiest man alive for being the recipient.
