here's what a hacienda is, for me:
1) 10 square kilometers, like that of the chiongbians (shipping magnate) in asturias, cebu. they bought it from serging osmena junior. been there. the owner bought pigs from england for breeding. they had hundreds of pigs in many buildings. wherever one looked were endless plots of various veggies. their swimming pool, though, was unused by humans. it had hundreds of turtles. for human consumption. as i had a pet turtle then, i swore i won't go back to that place for whatever reason.
2) in negros occidental, where haciendas end at the blue horizon. within the hacienda is a sugar refinery, like that of jose mari chan's family. i've passed this singer's family's hacienda many times. i've never been inside.
of course, the hacienda of nanding cojuangco (he has one, in negros) has 3 thousand topgrade fighting cocks at any one time, at an average cost of 25k pesos each more than 15 years ago. i haven't seen this hacienda. i just heard about it as part of the local lore.
OT: at that time i acquired six eggs, supposedly from cojuangco's breed of fighting cocks, and had these eggs hatched with the help of a bulb in a box at our living room. they turned out to be very beautiful fighting cocks, which i kept as pets, what else. too bad when new years came they got crazy with all the fireworks, i had to bring them to the bedroom for protection. and i stopped eating chicken and eggs. something's gotta give. i gave them away to someone who knows about fighting cocks and who considered himself the luckiest man alive for being the recipient.
