I wonder how much it would cost to own say, 30-50 hectares of fertile farm land.

50 hectares planted with coconut is worth 800,000- 1M Php, plus maintenance, plus seedlings for new plants, plus animal stocks for animal raising...
hmmm.... ::) di tanto dako

Salamat, Belle. The beauty of owning a hacienda, from my experience in visiting around the basaks in Valencia and in around Northern Bohol as well is that one never has to worry about a lack of food, or income, because it is a renewable resource. Land is wealth.

Lami pood if one has a hacienda as large as 50+ hectares so one can plant and grow rice, maize, sugar cane, and the lot.

:)

Dako bitaw ni, pero, with proper land management, and maintenance, and ample productivity, the gains will offset the costs.

Land Owning is a good investment plan, imho.

hahaha! Raquel, speaking of farm, I am in Chicago baya! Naa ko diri sa Uptown area, serving in Jackson Park Hospital and LA Weiss Hospital.
Pwede ba mo bisita ko sa imong hacienda during vacay time? hehe!
Mag EB ta!

On your statement tho, a farmer's daughter is quite hard to come by here in the Windy City. But I must say, i must say , indeed, driving past the vast acreage of Indiana, Ohio, Eastern Illinois truly allowed me to appreciate the 'beauty' of the Bread Basket. hehe!

It is truly a different setting compared to Suburbian Southern New Jersey; or the urbanized lifestyle in Chicago. :)

Raquel, your family are more than welcome to spend the night in my apartment, as I am staying in residential uptown. A bit pricey ang area, pero, since i will be here for the next 2+ years for clinical rotations , okey lang! hehe. I am excited to show you guys around the area, because the place where i stay is near the lake, and there is a 20+ mile long bike/walking path that is lined with trees ; the sights and places here are amazing. Near the region where I live is a large vietnamese, chinese, filipino and italian, polish community. I guess thats the beauty of Chicago, it being such a metropolis and mixed with so many ethnic cultures, tastes that gives this metropolis an eclectic feel. Clean and urban. Sige! Consider my home your home if you ever come to visit.

I would love to visit your farm; and to appreciate the beauty that is Illinois; the Bread Basket State!

You know, it would be a great decision to practice medicine in this area, too, considering the need of doctors here, and the really great life style; not to say the cost of living is excellent. Oh I bet the doctors you know in the area are really hospitable , Raquel. I know some friends who are doing their veterinary rotations in this region.

hehe!

hehe , indeed. away from the hum drums of the city life. when i was in bohol, i preferred being in valencia than in tagbilaran.
Driving to valencia was always a trip for me; with my windows down, the sound of jeepneys, the smell of the fresh air, and overtaking the pedi cabs. lol.

Passing from Dimiao to my beloved Valencia as I entered the arch that proclaims, "Welcome to Valencia/ Viva Valencia!" hehe. Then the wooden arches that exclaims, "Viva Santo Nino!". Home. My hometown of Valencia.

I miss her.  :)

naa man pood mi ug gagmayng hacienda sa Valencia hehe, not 50 hectares, pero quite sizeable pood. When I visited Valencia, i went there to visit my lolo's basaks as well as my parents' basaks. Fertile green. Talking to our caretakers and seeing the carabao(s) that tilled our farm. hehe.
The best part is visiting the basak early in the morning, just before the sunrise. Fresh humay from Valencia is one of the best.

I exceptionally enjoyed being with the farmers, only because i used to plant rice with my grandfather and my grand-uncles when i was younger. So the memory of being there was richly ingrained in my mind, and being there walking there was enjoyable. Talking to the farmers, and listening to them. At the time I visited, there was a dry season (early july) but by the second time i visited (late july), the rains had come and had filled our rice land with life-giving rain. It was amazing seeing everyone planting the rice, and the stories being overheard. I did not even know those people but they knew me, my lolo, and my parents. And how their grand parents knew my lolo's grand parents etc. Humbling experience.

Many times they would tell me not to plant rice kai 'luoy pood ka sir', ingoon pood ko balik, 'dili oy, kamo may luoy kalingaw mo trabajo sa basak nga init kaajo. mo testing lang gud ko unsa man ning kinabuhi sa basak...' katawa sila , katawa pood ko. so i experienced life as a basak farmer for that short time. working with our caretakers. :)

I loved it there.
