My mother's fortune plant blooms, part of the Alocacia Cuculata species.

These plants bloom once in a year. This species of plant blooms only at night as well, luckily my father and brother captured it at the right time. At the right place :)

My mom bought that plant over 10 years ago, Agnes. And I have never once seen it bloom, until my father and brother captured it via picture. My dad and little brother came down at night a few days back and actually witnessed it bloom.  What I found warming was the fact that the plant bloomed a couple of days before my sister and I arrived home for winter vacation. I couldn't believe my own eyes after seeing the picture in my mom's dig cam of the plant blooming.

Hopefully, someday, I'll be able to actually see it bloom with my own eyes and not through a camera. :)

How old is your plant diay, Agnes?

We have that in Anda, and it gives pleasant smell at night time, bisan sa layo pa manimaho na.

I have also seen a fortune plant bloom, 4 years back in our workplace. It did produce a very fragrant smell, similar to that of the classic Anais Anais by Cacharell, but only at night. I further researched about this plant and I found that it have some sort of sensor for animal or human emotions. It blooms only if it sensed tranquility or happiness in the place. Its scent is used to attract nocturnal mammals specially bats, so their wing flaps will cause pollenation.

However, have anyone witnessed a flowering bamboo? God forbid because once a bamboo will produce a flower, it will be the end of our bamboo industry. They will produce seed and in the process will die out. That seeds will grow, but in few years and there will be massive shortage of bamboo material for a long time.

The most interesting part is this bamboo flowering will happen simultaneously worldwide. The last flowering of the bamboo happened in the 1960’s. Until now, they can not exactly predict the next flowering will occur. In China, it caused the near extinction of the Panda population where bamboo is their main source of food.

Until now, scientists and genetic engineers are baffled and still unable to predict the next flowering of the bamboo. I’ve seen this documentary in the National Geographic.

See this link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/06/0621_bamboo.html

That’s why plants are very interesting creatures.

Bamboo holds in its DNA a biological clock that tells it when to bear flower. Some species will flower once every century, some every 40 or 50 years. The amazing thing is that regardless of temperature, location and climate, it will flower when the time comes. Like when flowering of Indian Bamboos occur, all bamboo of same species in London and France Botanical institutes also flowered at the same time.

Aya is correct; it does emit a beautiful smell. This past Winter 2010, our Fortune Plant bloomed again.
I saw it with my very own eyes, and smelled the aroma that it emits. It bloomed at night.
