I have also seen a fortune plant bloom, 4 years back in our workplace. It did produce a very fragrant smell, similar to that of the classic Anais Anais by Cacharell, but only at night. I further researched about this plant and I found that it have some sort of sensor for animal or human emotions. It blooms only if it sensed tranquility or happiness in the place. Its scent is used to attract nocturnal mammals specially bats, so their wing flaps will cause pollenation.
However, have anyone witnessed a flowering bamboo? God forbid because once a bamboo will produce a flower, it will be the end of our bamboo industry. They will produce seed and in the process will die out. That seeds will grow, but in few years and there will be massive shortage of bamboo material for a long time.
The most interesting part is this bamboo flowering will happen simultaneously worldwide. The last flowering of the bamboo happened in the 1960’s. Until now, they can not exactly predict the next flowering will occur. In China, it caused the near extinction of the Panda population where bamboo is their main source of food.
Until now, scientists and genetic engineers are baffled and still unable to predict the next flowering of the bamboo. I’ve seen this documentary in the National Geographic.
