Electronic cigarettes challenge anti-smoking efforts

By Daniel Nasaw BBC News Magazine, Washington

A smoker puffs an e-cigarette in Germany, which has moved to regulate them like pharmaceuticals

A new TV advert for a brand of electronic cigarettes marks the first time in decades cigarettes of any sort have been promoted on US television. Anti-smoking campaigners fear the rapid growth of tobacco-free cigarettes could undermine years of successful anti-smoking efforts.

A handsome actor poses and struts on a beach in a stylishly shot black-and-white television spot. He puts the cigarette to his lips, takes a puff, and exhales a rich flume.

"Blu lets me enjoy smoking without it affecting the people around me, because it's vapour not tobacco smoke," says Stephen Dorff, the scruffy heartthrob star of The Immortals.

"We're all adults here, it's time we take our freedom back."

The taste is better than real cigarettes and you don't disturb people because it doesn't smell.

You can smoke inside in public places. I smoke in restaurants, I smoke in bars. I even ended up smoking in the subway.

I think it's healthier - it doesn't give you cancer. I smoked some [tobacco] cigarettes on one night three weeks ago, and I was disgusted by it, actually.

WHO warnings on electronic cigarettes

;)   Manufacturers have not fully disclosed chemicals in nicotine solution

;)   The contents of the vapour emissions have not been thoroughly studied

;)   Health effects on users, especially long-time users, have not been studied

;)   Could undermine public smoking bans

;)   Could undermine smoking cessation efforts

;)   Could weaken tobacco-use prevention campaigns through their marketing as safe alternatives to smoking

Pretty much expensive. Safe in a different way. I think this is one alternative of nicotine addiction besides the looming sin tax bill.

You have the benefits of nicotine , without the negative effects on the pulmonary system. This is what we recommend as a dosing method for patients who want to cease smoking effectively.

This is effective because the nicotine level is decreased in increment, until the patient's threshold diminishes. Better this than the actual cigarette because this one does not have the tar , which causes the transformation of respiratory epithelia, which is responsible for the development of cancer.

Yes, it has a tar free component and can be widely used as an alternative of nicotine for smokers. However, e-cigarettes too has side effects based on the recent studies. Instead of curbing smoking, it invokes promotion. Some people preferably nonsmokers can take out their curiosity on trying these products. For those who can't afford, pinoys are known to be resourceful in other ways, they can plant tobaccos and weeds as well.

Yes, like any drug, there will always be a side effect. It is imperative that the patient who is prescribed by his or her M.D to take e-cigarattes should also be educated on the reason why they are placed on this substitute; namely to reduce the instance of smoking. The patient will be counseled by the physician to implement behavioral modification -- to reduce the urge to smoke.

Patients that are prescribed to go on e-cigarettes are usually those who have developed COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases) secondary to the smoke and tar found in the cigarette. This is beneficial for the patient because the cessation of smoke inhalation and tar residues in the pulmonary tract allows the respiratory epithelia to transition back to its normal state. Secondly, it will help the patient's breathing.

Hehe, you forgot that not all pinoys can afford e-cigarettes in the Philippines. They can plant tobaccos in their farms. Aside from that, there's also another alternatives such as champrix, nicotine gums and patches. I don't know if these are available nowadays.

The most important thing to do is to conduct health teaching by educate people about the danger of smoking. Actually, vapors brought by e-cigarettes will not help ease in COPD patients but to encourage purse lip breathing is a better way for comfort.

By the way, have you heard about the sin tax bill?

60 pesos for a pack? That's cheap. In Chicago, one pack of cigarettes is $10. 400 pesos for a pack.

Philippines is among the cheapest cigarettes in Southeast Asia or the whole world. It is primarily due to inadequate tobacco tax inflation. Only 22% of it's retail price was set instead of the 70% recommendation by the WHO. What's good about it is that the revenues of the sin tax bill will be allocated for the healthcare thus improving our healthcare delivery system as well.

It's considered as the lowest priority when it comes to our healthcare but I know what you're thinking hehe. I'm hopeful for the plight to sustain the needs of our people.

Speaking of laws, especially those enacted where we are, I am reminded of what Aristotle said: "It is better for a city to be governed by a good man than by good laws.”

Well, it's the Aristocracy principle. There are two parts of the good government. The actual obedience of citizens to the laws and the goodness of the laws which they obey hence they may obey good and bad laws. Good government requires good citizenry. As what Aristotle noted, "The citizen must be moulded to suit the form of government under his living." A proper society must exist before good laws can be enforced. ::)

I take it to mean that by “government” here you mean the body politic and not the more common definition of government as consisting of a group of persons with the authority to exercise administrative control of a state.

It's a bit offtopic regarding this thread but let me shed on the perspective of Aristotle's philosophy. Now he stated that all government types have a negative form. Discerning the good and bad ruling. We have these forms democracy, tyranny, oligarchy and monarchy. When it must be in the hands of one, of a few, or of the many; then governments may govern for the general good or for the good of the rulers. Government by a single person for the general good is known as “monarchy”; for private benefit called “tyranny.” Government by a minority is “aristocracy” if it aims at the state’s best interest and “oligarchy” if it benefits only the ruling minority. Popular government in the common interest, he calls “polity or constitutional government.

According to Aristotle, democracy is not the best form of government. As well also true of oligarchy and monarchy. The rule in democracy is for and by the people named in the government type. In democracy, rule is by and for the needy. On the contrary, the rule of law or aristocracy literally, power which is rule of the best or even monarchy where the ruler has the interest of his country at heart or the pursue of virtue are better types of government.

One may deplore that it is not the responsibility of the city to enact laws encouraging citizens to act virtuously, but rather that moral education belongs more properly to an individual household. In Aristotle's view, "virtue must be a care for every city," because "the city exists not only for the sake of living but rather primarily for the sake of living well". :D
