Life is all about choices
« on: May 06, 2010, 08:02:23 PM »
John is the kind of guy you love to hate.  He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say.  When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be twins!'

He was a natural motivator..

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, 'I don't get it!'

'You can't be a positive person all of the time.  How do you do it?'

He replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today.  You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood

I choose to be in a good mood.'

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it.  I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life.  I choose the positive side of life.

'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.

'Yes, it is,' he said.  'Life is all about choices.  When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice.  You choose how you react to situations.  You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line:  It's your choice how you live your life.'

I reflected on what he said.  Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business..  We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, 'If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?'

I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

'The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,' he replied.  'Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices:  I could choose to live or...I could choose to die.  I chose to live.'

'Weren't you scared?  Did you lose consciousness?'  I asked.

He continued, '...the paramedics were great.

They kept telling me I was going to be fine.  But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared.  In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'.  I knew I needed to take action.'

'What did you do?' I asked..

'Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,' said John.  'She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.'  The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply.  I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity''

Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live.  Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude...I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully...

Attitude, after all, is everything.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.'  Matthew 6:34.

After all today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. - forwarded email...

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

That is why I said not choosing it is also a choice. I have a choice to migrate in UK and US at the same time, I did not choose UK, I preferred US.

That was a choice.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood.  The bottom line:  It's your choice how you live your life.'

Sounds good. But we have to remember that decisions are not discrete: they are connected to everthing else in our life, to who were are, to our sense of self-worth. Moods certainly make a difference, but moods should be subject to one's principles, and not vice versa. You cannot choose to be in a good mood while a murder is being committed and decide to just let the murderer have his way, just because you woke up to a decision to be in a good mood. Unless, of course, you're an utterly despicable human being...

The positive side of life is not, I'm afraid, a matter of choosing the best mood to be in. The positive side of live is, I believe, living up to your principles, wherever these principles lead you, and in whatever mood they bring you there. Mood is simply the costume you wear to the carnival of life. Other people might mistake the costume for the person, but you ought to know better. And they should, too.

I agree with you, most decisions people made (or just speaking for myself) were all circumstantial. Generally , we based our decisions on the circumstances at that time of the decision making.

And it's because circumstances are shifting and unpredictable that training and principles come into play. Sometimes, conscious deliberate choice is not an option. It can happen that one is not given the luxury of agonizing over a decision.

Sometimes, our deciions are painful, sometimes they were wrong at the start and turn out right in the end, sometimes we thought they were right and were yielding negative results in the end, sometimes in the process it will hurt or make people happy. The only thing that really matters is to stand brave in facing the consequences of our decisions and the willingness to repair the damages if there are any.

Yes, life is just too full of variables that there's no way of knowing where our decisions lead us, or what unintended consequences they engender. The mind can fairly easily surmount personal debacles, but the wounded heart will be marked for life.

When I read this, I immediately thank God that I am not in a real life episode of 24 and I never have to kill someone for the better good. When you think about it, there are men and women out there fighting for our freedom, not just in the US but for the rest of the world as well and making "Jack Bauer Type" decisions that will probably haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Forgive me but I disagree. Well, generally women hate talking about age, however, wisdom comes with age due to accumulated experiences, getting old is not just the number of years you live by, but, how you spent those years. It is not how long, but it is measured by prints you left behind that cannot be replaced by time.

Thanks, ladies. (Or should I rather say, girls?) ;D

I am told that one may be silly in youth but should be solemn in age. Yet one could be a humorless adolescent, or a silly old fool. I regret being humorless when I was young; I hope I won't become silly when I'm old. ;D

Thanks. Ms. Wolf. But I'm not really smart. I'm just rather old. :)

thus do i shudder at the possible breadth and depth of your wisdom when you positively, truly, do get old. :)

Indeed. That is what makes our decisions uniquely personal. In that aspect, we are the lords and directors of our decisions, whether we take that step or deign to withdraw for fear of doubt or for precautionary measures. Decisions are entirely left to the individual, if we are strong enough to make it for our own or if we be wise/pleaded to take an action by the intercession of a few or a many. In the end, the essence of a decision, the action of a decision, the finality of a decision leads us to the idea that we are the directors of our own lives. It is the unique epitome of the notion of 'Free Will'.

To some it seems simple; but in reality, it is quite existentialist.

The fact that you made a decision, made an act, followed through with a decision is eternal. It is proof that you existed in this universe, in this vast emptiness. You were, you are, you did, you had, you were...

Absolutely! It is so pathetic though, that some people blamed others for their misfortunes, forgetting the fact that, they, first and foremost decided the kind of life they are going to lead.

What we are today are results of our decisions in the past, what we were in the past were results of decisions the time before then, so on and so forth. It is an unending cycle.

Quite true. There are very few absolute truths in life. Some of these are:

1. Our thoughts are ours, unless shared
2. Life is given, however, anyone has the ability to terminate his or her own life
3. Decisions are your own.
4. Death is guaranteed; the only difference is the manner and the time.

In my personal view, it is useless and a waste of energy to wonder and ponder about the 'what ifs' in life. Because those what ifs will always remain just that--what ifs. Hypothetical situations that could have been, but never/ failed to manifest. It is torture for oneself to spend excess time on those, and can only be to detrimental effect for the individual.

We live on the present, which dictates the course of the future.

What we decide on now will determine the future; the past's decisions have affected the present, but that does not mean that the future is dependent on the past. One's destiny lies on the action of the individual. I have always been a keen believer on an aggressive stance on life. If you want something, go get it. Because you know what...no one will give you anything in life; except free criticism. :)

If you want it, get it. Words into Action.

Cheers.

And if I may add:
1)     What has been said, cannot be left unspoken
2)     Things we did cannot be undone
3)     We cannot change our relatives
