You've been raising the issue of politics here. Absolutely there is nothing political here. We are not from Guindulman and we don't know who the heartless mayor of your town is. We don't care who your mayor is, a dog or an idiot or whoever in the kingdom come. We care about the trees. Period.

Mi sign na ko sa petition.

During the 1900's up to 20's my grandfather the late Rufino Sarmiento was a 'kapatas' (foreman) of a survey team that paved the way to construct major roads of Bohol. My late grandmother told me that it was my grandfather's initiative being superstitious to replace fallen trees with Acacia Trees planted beside the new road they built.

I believe those were one of my grandfather's trees. Those were sacred to me.

I would like to believe it is true that the government has done none to preserve the beach trees.
I browsed DA website, including BFAR but found nothing but fish, fish, fish, cage, cage, cage, tilapia, tilapia, tilapia, etc.

But i still believe there is or there was a long term program to this.
Let us ask Koddi Prudente. I think he was one of the think tanks about this
long time ago in cooperation with the European Union.

A Letter to the Municipality of Guindulman

We, the concerned Boholanos residing in the Philippines and overseas, strongly condemn the senseless cutting of century-old acacia trees in the historic town of Guindulman, Bohol. We strongly believe that such acts of the local officials are unforgivable.

The acacia trees are not only part of the life and culture of the people, those trees stood witness of the townâ€™s struggles, trials and triumphs. Those trees also show-cased the cultural heritage of the municipality, therefore, the aesthetic values of those trees cannot be at par or compromised with any development project Guindulman undertakes.

We believe that persons in authority should be held accountable for their actions. What they did is a total disregard of all environmental efforts in preserving the Mother Nature, not withstanding, the insult they inflicted to the entire generation of Guindulmanons, the Bohol population and the Philippines as a whole. It is a total gross negligence leading us to believe that the incumbent mayor and the members of Sangguniang Bayan apparently abuse their powers and authorities.

The Honorable Ma. Fe Piezas, the incumbent mayorâ€™s defense for her irresponsible acts which is for the safety of the public is a total lie. The Pacific Consultant International (PCI), consultants of the Bohol Circumferential Road Improvement Project (BCRIP-2) did not recommend the cutting of the trees when the national highway road was built in 2006. It was indeed illogical that the trees became a hazard three years after the Japanese environmental and structural experts deemed the trees safe and part of the scenic sights along the national highways. It is highly unacceptable that the main purpose for cutting the trees is to give a prominent view of the building claimed by the municipal administration as its major accomplishment or pet project. The damages are irreparable.

The Community Environment and Natural Resources Office who issued the special permit is also equally liable with the local officials. No matter how sick and old those trees were, concerned officials must exhaust every possible means to save them. On this aspect, they failed us.

It is therefore, our moral obligation to see to it that the perpetrators of this ecological massacre in Guindulman will answer for what they did. The pitiful trees cannot cry or beg for mercy, but we the people can seek justice on their behalf. We should always remember that we did not inherit the environment, we borrow this from our children. More than anything else, on this particular situation, we shall see to it that justice will be served.

Moreso, we urge the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to conduct an investigation on this issue, not only in this Guinldulman case, but in all future applications to avoid repetition of committing the same grievous mistakes.

As Mike opened a thread about the acacia cuttings, I informed some friends and relatives in the USA, who knows the mayor very well. At first there was a great outcry but slowly the topic died like a ningas kogon. I insisted that we put our signatures and pay a page of a local newspaper ( I was willing to pay ), walay signatures, walay email ug laktod pagkasulti nahilom.

I dont know how to confront her in my coming vacation. Salamat ninyong tanan.

I have just obtained an info from the DENR. The truth is that what the mayor had told the DENR that they would prone the trees. Later the DENR was surprised upon inspection that the mayor had cut all the trees, young and old, for no reason at all. Later we know the mayor just wanted her new public market be seen by all. One acacia tree was spared from the heartless massacre because the mayor could no longer find a brave soul that she could hire to cut the trees. The one who cut the giant tree mysteriously died the day after he cut that century-old tree.

If you go to Guindulman, you'd find that no soul was happy with the heartless decision of the mayor.

It is beutiful to see a market place adorned with greens around it. It will appear like people are really buying fresh items on that place.

Seafood may be delicious but boy do they smell awful...our dried fish doesn't smell too fabulous either. The market place is the hub of the town...those trees were providing a great service. Shade, for one, a natural coolant...which is pretty healthy, people die from high blood pressure complications from the heat, it also freshens the air as it gulps tons upon tons of carbon dioxide.

This may be of little significance to others but think of all the birds that nest in that tree...the bigger the bird population, the more birds who will eat the worms off of the crops.

Also, big trees like acacia provide shelter for spiders like the wolf spider, like our local, tapay2. Even though I don't like spiders with a passion, they do eat a lot of awful insects...and provide food for the birds.

a tree is just bigger than emotional attachment, memories and shade, i'm sure if we really dig into it, we can find a few hundred other reasons why we should preserve them.

As Mike opened a thread about the acacia cuttings, I informed some friends and relatives in the USA, who knows the mayor very well. At first there was a great outcry but slowly the topic died like a ningas kogon. I insisted that we put our signatures and pay a page of a local newspaper ( I was willing to pay ), walay signatures, walay email ug laktod pagkasulti nahilom.

I still don't understand the reason why the mayor has to cut them down. She must have known the impact on the environment. It is beutiful to see a market place adorned with greens around it. It will appear like people are really buying fresh items on that place. The only reason I can think of is " Attention ". She must have bored or not doing enough for the community and the trees got her attention instead. Poor trees and the community!
