Vital Power Project For Bohol
« on: December 17, 2007, 07:43:31 PM »
The regional development council of Central Visayas will ask the government to fund two vital power projects that will ensure the reliability of the electricity supply in the region.

The council wants a new sub-station built in Naga City in Cebu province and improved power transmission lines in Bohol province and they endorsed the projects for the approval of the Investment Coordination Committee of the National Economic and Development Authority, the council said in a statement.

The new Naga sub-station will be located at Barangays Colon and Tuyan in Naga City and is estimated to cost about P1.156 million, while the P1.3-billion Bohol Backbone Transmission Project will involve the improvement of transmission lines in the entire province.

The Neda regional office said the construction of the project can start in January, with a target date of completion on June 2010, if the Cabinet panel approves the funding requirement.

The old Naga switchyard has 10 diesel and coal-fired generators with varying capacities from 7.3 megawatts to 55 MW and they generated power from the diesel- and coal-fired power plants that transmitted power through five 138-KV lines.

The switchyard handles about 200 MW of electricity, or some 60 percent of the total generation capacity of Cebu.

According to the National Transmission Corp., the switchyard contains electrical equipment that have gone beyond their maximum usefulness and is already outdated according to current industry standards.

TransCo said a new sub-station will improve the reliability of the power supply and increase efficiency of transmission to the Visayas grid as well as ensure the security of the system.

On the other hand, the Bohol Backbone Transmission Project involves the expansion of the sub-station in Ubay town, the construction of a new one in Corella and the installation of transmission lines with more capacity.

The project will solve the current weakness of the Bohol Grid by expanding the Ubay sub-station and connecting it to the new sub-station in Corella via a 138-KV transmission line.

TransCo said the project was necessary to prevent the overloading of the existing 69-KV transmission lines since Bohol is dependent on electricity from the Leyte grid and the loss of any of the two lines that are currently in use will result in an island-wide blackout.
