Bohol Chronicle: The 20-meter salvage zone should be strictly implemented in the beach line if Boholanos would like to preserve the image of Panglao as an environmentally friendly tourists' haven.
Learning from the Boracay experience, multi-awarded and respected Makati-based planner Felino "Jun" Palafox of Palafox Associates discourages the "do nothing" or the (donut) development wherein development is concentrated on the beachfront with nothing done at the center of the island.
Palafox, during a presentation of the Panglao master plan last Thursday recommended the Boracay set-up of leaving its beachfront open to the public and to uphold the required salvage zone.
"No amount of development will impress the tourists if every structure gets congested at the beachfront leaving no huge open space for tourists to walk around and breathe the fresh air," Palafox stressed.
Anchoring his plan primarily on the people, planet earth and putting profit last, Palafox Associates proposed Panglao's eco-tourism development to be based on Green urbanism in order to balance environment protection and development.
Green Urbanism is one of the components of the principle of five Gs, the others being green technology, green sustainable development, green energy and green architecture.
Palafox Associates presented the highlights of the eco-tourism development master plan of Panglao Island's development during last Thursday's gathering at Bohol Tropics Resort, this city.
Based on a memorandum of agreement that Gov. Erico Aumentado, representing the provincial government, and Palafox signed last year, the master plan is aimed at ensuring that horizontal infrastructure to be constructed in Panglao and Dauis towns will be in harmony with the geographical demands of the terrains of Panglao in relation to the beach and the sea.
