what is a mexican wave?

The wave (known as the Mexican wave in the anglosphere outside North America) is an example of metachronal rhythm achieved in a packed stadium when successive groups of spectators briefly stand, yell, and raise their arms. Immediately upon stretching to full height, the spectator returns to the usual seated position. (wikipedia)

Australia 2-3 Netherlands match report: Depay winner seals Dutch comeback over spirited Australia

Jun 18, 2014 19:07
By Bruce Archer

Tim Cahill's wonderstrike was not enough for the Socceroos as Louis van Gaal's men won a see-saw game in Porto Alegre

Arjen Robben of the Netherlands shoots and scores his team's first goal past goalkeeper Mathew Ryan of Australia

Holland followed up their huge win over Spain with a more modest, but just as thrilling, victory over Australia to take full control of Group B.

The Dutch move onto six points and are just about guaranteed a place in the last 16 after goals from Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and the winner from Memphis Depay.

lining up before the match

Tim Cahill struck for a second game running with an incredible - Marco van Basten-esque - volley to level after Robben's opener and Australia then took the lead briefly through Mile Jedinak's 54th minute penalty.

an Australian fan

But van Persie followed up his brace against Spain with another effort, before Depay finished the match with 22 minutes to go, scoring from a 20-yard effort which keeper Mathew Ryan should have done better with.

Australia, without a point, are just about out and will miss Cahill for their final match with Spain having picked up his second booking of the tournament - Van Persie will also miss the final round of group games having done the same.

Adios España: Chile knock holders off their perch

Miguel Delaney
Wednesday 18 June 2014

Iker Casillas looks on in despair

Too tired, too slow and too few points. Spain’s World Cup is over, and an era ends. Vicente Del Bosque’s team have become only the fifth defending champions in history to go out in the group stage, but the first the lose their opening two games and thereby the quickest to ever go home.

They are also the first team eliminated from the 2014 tournament. That sums up the scale of the fall almost as much as the poverty of their play. Chile, as they promised before the game, have made history.

The South Americans also consigned Spanish dominance to the past with a display that brilliantly outpaced their famous philosophy and made it look brutally outdated.

The 2010 World Cup winners joined the exclusive club of teams who have won the World Cup and gone out at the next in the group stage after their 2-0 defeat to Chile

Joe Krishnan
Wednesday 18 June 2014

World champions Spain are out of the 2014 World Cup following their 2-0 defeat to Chile, with goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz sending home Vicente Del Bosque's side. But they are certainly not the first reigning champions to leave the competition early.

After their historic 1-0 win over the Netherlands four years ago in South Africa, La Roja experienced humiliation of the highest level after shock defeats to the Netherlands and Chile.

Many have commented that it is the end of 'tiki-taka' as we know it, but Spain are certainly not the first and won't be the last to relinquish their crown at the first attempt of defending it.

In fact, Spain join two other nations in the 21st Century who have crashed out at the group stage the tournament after winning the World Cup - France in 2002 and Italy in 2010.

But Spain are the only champions to have lost their first two games the tournament after winning it.

Here are the other nations who went from the highest of highs to humiliation within two tournaments.

Italy (1950)

The Italians won the 1938 World Cup but, due to World War II, were unable to defend their crown until 12 years later. And even then, they were severely weakened by the fact that some members of their squad were killed in the Superga air disaster the year before the tournament started. They were put in a group with Paraguay, Sweden and India (who later withdrew), and lost their opening game 3-2 to Sweden, who went through.

Brazil (1966)

Even with the likes of Pele and Tostao in the side, Brazil could not live up to the expectations of them and subsequently failed to make it past the group stages in the 1966 World Cup. Their group, containing Hungary, Portugal and Bulgaria, was one filled with goals, and Brazil's 3-1 defeat to Portugal condemned them to failure in England, who went on to win their first and only World Cup.

France (2002)

A shock 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan showed a sign of things to come for France. After their incredible 3-0 win over Brazil in 1998, the weight of expectation proved to be too much for the reigning champions. They ended the tournament winless after being defeated by Denmark and a goalless draw with Uruguay which saw Thierry Henry infamously sent off.

Italy (2010)

A group that Italy were more than capable of getting out of turned into their worst nightmare as Marcelo Lippi's side were eliminated from the World Cup. Their opponents - Paraguay, Slovakia and debutants New Zealand - surprised the Azzurri, with the latter side picking up a 1-1 draw. A 3-2 defeat to Slovakia compounded Italy's exit, although France's equal level of underachievement meant that Italy's poor showing went somewhat under the radar.

Spanish Press Reacts To Elimination, 2-0 Loss To Chile: 'Unbelievable Ridicule'

By Alberto
June 18 2014

(L-R) Spain's David Silva, Sergio Busquets, Diego Costa, Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso react after Chile's Charles Aranguiz scored his team's second goal during the 2014 World Cup Group B soccer match at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro June 18, 2014. REUTERS/Dylan Martinez

This week ought to be a time of celebration for Spain. King Felipe VI is being crowned Thursday, after the official abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos I, on Wednesday. But instead, the country will be thinking about something else that happened on Wednesday -- something that will also go down in the history books, but for a far less joyous reason: Spain’s early elimination from the World Cup after a 2-0 loss to Chile.

It’s only the fourth time in the soccer World Cup’s 84-year history that a defending champion goes home unceremoniously after an elimination in the first round. And Spain had gone to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup as a favorite, widely thought to be in a good position to defend the 2010 title it won in South Africa. On Wednesday, Spain should have been celebrating a victory against the far less vaunted Chilean team.

Instead, the Spaniards are out of the cup. Not even a lopsided victory next week in their third and final match, against Australia, would net them enough points to advance to the round of 16. They are now dead last in their group of four. The Chileans, who had won their first match against Australia by 3-1 last week, are already sure of advancing --  as is the fourth team in the group, the Netherlands, which humiliated Spain 5-1 last week and then beat Australia 3-2.

The significance of such a humiliation -- seven goals to one scored in two matches, an enormity in soccer -- was not lost on the Spanish press, which reacted emotionally. The biggest sports daily in the nation, Marca, went with a simple one-word headline: Crashed! and put it over a picture of goalkeeper and team capitain Iker Casillas staring forlornly into space, while a teammate hides his face under his jersey. The story itself was just as harsh, accusing the outgoing champions of having shown the world “another unbelievable ridicule,” a merciless reference to the five-goal drubbing suffered from the Dutch.

“It’s a sad goodbye,” Marca said, adding  that the team of coach Vicente del Bosque had given “a very poor image.” The squad “screams for a generational change,” read the story -- and that was just the front page summary.

“That was good while it lasted, but everything ends in life,” Marca said of the national team’s cycle of domination (it won the 2012 European championship as well). And because you can’t have a World Cup without vaguely war-related metaphors, the newspaper noted the match had been “a national agony.”

The country’s newspaper of record, El País, was more composed in its reaction, simply saying in its main headline on the Web: “Spain out of the World Cup after falling to Chile.” But even the normally subdued País could not avoid words commensurate with the magnitude of the loss: It was “a calamitous effort,” “the nightmare of Brazil,” and, again, “the most complete ridicule.”

Casillas was quoted by the paper as saying, “I demand forgiveness from the people.” The paper’s sports writer in charge of live-blogging the match caught the spirit perfectly: “Sad night, but you have to get up and think of the future. Life goes on. A strong hug to everybody,” Rafael Pineda signed off.

El fútbol is that serious a deal, yes. And the new king of the Spaniards, knowing well who his subjects are, may very well mention in his coronation speech Thursday a sentiment similar to what Pineda wrote. Felipe VI, meeting the press on Wednesday, asked half-jokingly if the journalists had  any ideas for the speech -- and it’s hard to imagine that the new king’s advisors will not tell him to talk constructively about the defeat, and a future rebirth, as a metaphor that a nation coming out of a dire economic crisis could use as inspiration.

It’s tough to lose like this (and to not one but two formerly Spanish-dominated nations, by the way, though the king won’t say it), but life goes on.

World Cup 2014: Croatia Defeats Cameroon, 4-0

By IAN LOVETT

Croatia is still alive and Cameroon is out of the World Cup after a very one-sided encounter in Manaus.

Croatia took an early lead through Ivica Olic, but it remained a tight contest until Alex Song lost his cool and inexplicably lashed out at Mario Mandzukic late in the first half, punching him from behind as they ran up the field. Song was rightly shown a red card, leaving Cameroon down a goal and a man, and without any real hope.

Croatia’s Ivica Olic, right, scored the opening goal in Wednesday’s match against Cameroon.

In the second half, Cameroon simply imploded. Croatia scored three goals to make the final score 4-0, and it could easily have been twice that many as the Cameroonian defense fell apart. By the end of the game, one Cameroon player was head-butting another.

ImagesCroatia’s Ivan Perisic scored early in the second half.

Croatia will now face Mexico in its final match of the group, and they will likely need another win if they hope to advance. The Croatians will surely face stronger resistance than they did today. Still, they will take heart from Madzukic's return. He scored two goals today, and was a constant danger, especially on set pieces.

Ivan Perisic also starred for the Croats, setting up Olic for the first goal and scoring the second himself.

Personalized headrests and interior decor featuring their key players -- Belgium's Red Devils are being given the star treatment inside the Brussels Airlines Airbus A330 before they've even donned a sock. At 20/1 the team is a top five favorite to win the whole thing.

BRAZIL
Low-cost carrier GOL commissioned Brazil's acclaimed artistic duo Os Gemeos to turn the Boeing 737 into a flying canvas. They used 1,200 cans of spray paint to shroud the entire plane, apart from the wings, in a theme of "Brazilianness, democracy and diversity."

GERMANY
Lufthansa has renamed eight of its planes "Fanhansa" and added a football and German flag motif. The team -- 6/1 to become champions behind only Brazil and Argentina -- is being flown on an Airbus A340.

Solid, sturdy characters behind with a flash of dazzling flair up front -- the motif on the Aircharter.com Boeing 767 is much like the team it's transporting. Let's just hope star forward Asamoah Gyan remembered to pack his astonishing goal-scoring record.

We're not sure what'll make the champions of four years ago more uncomfortable -- their 13/2 odds this year or the beaming, highly expectant fan faces adorning the back end of Iberia's Airbus A330. Nice and colorful though.

Scotland Fan Enjoys Uruguay Beating England at 2014 World Cup

By Mark Patterson, UK Staff Writer
Jun 19, 2014

England are on the brink of elimination from the World Cup after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Luis Suarez and Uruguay, so fans of the South American nation were naturally delighted.

So too was a Scotland fan, hidden in the crowd among the Uruguayans in Sao Paulo. You can spot him in the still shot above wearing a Scotland away shirt and flying the national flag.

Blink and you'd have missed him, but clearly he didn't miss any of England's frustrating defeat.

Feeling football fever, or perhaps not? My neurological guide to the World Cup

Dean Burnett

Watching football can cause a dizzying range of emotional experiences – and here's why

'Emotions are stronger when you're part of a group' … England football fans in Sao Paulo after their team lost to Uruguay. Photograph: Oli Scarff/Getty Images

Friday 20 June 2014 16.00 BST

The recent England games have been a rollercoaster of emotions for enthusiastic fans. There's the anticipation created by a long build-up, the split-second changes in the fortune of the teams during the games, the possibility of victory suddenly replaced by crushing defeat. All of this throws fans from one extreme to the other, leaving them drained and exhausted, much as though they were actually playing.

Why does this happen? What is it about football that causes such intense emotional reactions?
